Abstract
PCBs equivalent to Aroclor 1242 and 1254 in soft tissues of oysters Crassostrea rivularis from the Guangdong coast, China, were measured using a GC-ECD. PCB concentrations (ng g(-1)d.w.) ranged from 30 to 2040 with an average of 315 in 2003-2007, and 0.35-1.43 with an average of 0.56 in 1989-1991. Annual averages were 0.61, 0.65, 313, 290 and 342ng g(-1), respectively in 1989, 1991, 2003, 2006 and 2007. In east Guangdong, the Pearl River Estuary, and west Guangdong, regional means were 444, 273, 194ng g(-1), respectively in 2003-2007, and 0.43, 0.78, 0.38ng g(-1), respectively in 1989-1991, indicating PCB levels in oysters have risen greatly by ratios of 350-1032 compared with earlier data. PCB sources may derive from older transformers, printing materials and pressworks. Fortunately, current residual PCBs in the oysters were 0.004-0.253mg kg(-1) (w.w.), still below hygienic criteria of China and developed countries.

Abstract
The composition and spatial distribution of various petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs), comprising both aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and selected chlorinated pesticides and PCBs were measured in biota and coastal sediments from seven countries in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman (Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates). Evidence of extensive marine contamination with respect to organochlorinated compounds and PHs was not observed. Only one site, namely the BAPCO oil refinery in Bahrain, was considered to be chronically contaminated. Comparison of the results from this survey for Σ DDTs and Σ PCBs in rock oysters from the Gulf of Oman with similar measurements made at the same locations over the past two decades indicates a temporal trend of overall decreasing Σ PCB concentrations in oysters, whereas Σ DDTs levels have little changed during that period.

Abstract
A total of 602 seafood samples, including fish, shrimps, crabs and molluscs, were analyzed for a suite of persistent halogenated compounds. The residual levels of DDTs (sum of o,p'- and p,p'-DDT, DDD, and DDE) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) varied significantly among different species, and ranged from non-detectable (nd) to 699 ng/g and nd to 5.93 ng/g, respectively. Comparison of the levels of DDTs and PBDEs in mussel samples worldwide suggested that South China is probably one of the most DDT-polluted areas, but is moderate at most in terms of PBDE contamination. Combined with a recent dietary survey at the same sampling locations, dietary intakes of DDTs and PBDEs by local residents via seafood consumption for all age groups were estimated to be 147-564 and 4.7-18.5 ng/day, or 8.5-12.9 and 0.27-0.46 g/kg bw/day, respectively. Among the different seafood types, fish contributed the largest portion of the dietary intakes of DDTs (57%), followed by molluscs (38%). Similarly, the dietary intakes of PBDEs were also dominated by fish (45%) and molluscs (45%). Assessment based on several available guidelines suggested that though no significant human health risk associated with the dietary intake of PBDEs, a lifetime cancer risk from dietary exposure to DDTs remains a probability. Because dietary intake of DDTs was dominated by fish and molluscs, added concern should be paid to fish and molluscs.

Abstract
Mussels were collected from the urban/industrialized site of New Brighton, Merseyside and the relatively non-industrial site of Llandudno, North Wales. All mussels were identified as Mytilus edulis by PCR amplification of Mefp1. DNA single strand breaks and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine were measured in gill within 24h of collection, using the COMET assay, both with and without formamidopyrimidine glycosylase. Gill lipid peroxidation was also measured within 24h. No difference between sites was found for frank SSB and malonaldehyde levels, however 8-oxo-dG and 4-hydroxynonenal were significantly greater in New Brighton mussels compared to Llandudno mussels. After 1-month laboratory maintenance, lipid peroxidation and 8-oxo-dG levels were lower. In contrast, frank SSB were higher. This could reflect enhanced DNA repair excision, though we cannot exclude the possibility of other non-oxidative DNA damage. The results suggest that laboratory maintenance allows recovery from environmentally induced oxidative damage, which was more extensive at Merseyside.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to investigate genotoxicant accumulation and biological responses of zebra mussels and blue mussels collected along a pollution gradient in the Seine estuary and in the Seine Bay. The sampling area included three contaminated and one reference sites for each species. The study focused on polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), lindane, polychlorobiphenyls (PCB) and metals known to be potential genotoxicants and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) inducers. Enzymatic activities related to cellular defence systems including the phase II enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST) and three antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were measured in gills. DNA adducts and DNA strand breaks (Comet assay) were measured in digestive gland and hemocytes, respectively. Species differences were observed in metal accumulation (As and Pb), GPx activity and DNA adduct formation. A marked upstream-downstream gradient was reported for PAH body burden and to a lesser extent for PCB and metals with the highest values measured just downstream the industrialized area of Rouen. GST and SOD activities in gills of bivalves were positively related to PAH and metals body burden, respectively. Activation of those cellular defences may prevent accumulation of electrophilic metabolites and free radicals and thus may protect DNA and others macromolecules against oxidation and adduction. Although DNA strand breaks and bulky adducts were detected in both species, levels were relatively low and no significant site differences were observed in June 2003. Our results indicate a clear relationship between genotoxicant accumulation and positive activation of detoxification and antioxidant systems but poor consequences in term of DNA damage for wild population of mussels inhabiting the Seine estuary.

Abstract
Spatial and temporal variations of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in cultivated oysters from five aquaculture areas along the western coast of Taiwan were investigated. Poor correlations between total PCB concentrations (ng/g dry weight [dw]) and physiologic parameters of oysters (shell length, width, thickness, and lipid content) were found. Total PCB concentrations ranged from 3.4 to 94 cng/g dw. The highest value was found in oysters from the Lu'ermen aquaculture area, which receives wastewater from a sodium hydroxide and pentachlorophenol factory. Furthermore, principal component analysis confirmed that the PCB congener pattern in this area was distinct from others and that two additional pollution sources might exist in the Tainan and Hsinchu areas. Oysters with PCB concentrations > 1 SD above the geometric mean were found mainly in Tainan (stations TN5 to TN9) with only one increased concentration in the Yunlin (station YL2) and Hsinchu (station HC4) aquaculture areas. Except for four confined stations, TN3 to TN6, where total PCB concentrations were higher (p = 0.028) in the warmer (May and July) than in the colder season (November and March), seasonal variation of total PCB concentrations in oysters was not significant. Geometric mean and geometric mean plus 1 SD of total PCB concentrations in this study are lower than those in South Korea and the United States (Mussel Watch).

Abstract
Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is considered here as a 'model persistent organic pollutant.' Data on its sources, emissions, environmental levels and distributions and trends are compiled and used to assess its fate and behaviour in the global environment. Consideration is given as to the extent to which it has undergone repeated air-surface exchange or 'hopping' to become globally dispersed, the balance between primary and secondary sources in maintaining ambient levels, and its ultimate sinks in the environment. Global production exceeded 100,000 tonnes and primary emissions to atmosphere probably peaked in the 1970s. There has been a consistent downward trend in the environment over the past 20 years. Temporal trends of HCB in the environment vary, dependent on time period measured, media studied and study location, but the average half-life from all the studies is approximately 9 years. Estimates are made of the contemporary burden in the environment; these range between 10,000 and 26,000 tonnes and are dominated by the loadings in treated and background soils, sediments and oceans. Estimates of the trends of HCB emissions from treated soils are derived. At its peak, the amount of HCB emitted from soil to air may have been in the hundreds to thousands of tonnes per year, which would have made it a significant source of HCB to the environment. Whilst the amount of HCB being emitted from contemporary soil is much lower, only a small amount of re-emission of HCB from soil to air is required to maintain contemporary air concentrations under the current primary emission scenario.

Abstract
The spatial distribution of various organochlorinated compounds was investigated in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman based on marine biota (fish and various bivalves) and coastal sediment collected in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during 2000-2001. Several potential organic contaminants from agricultural (e.g., DDT and its breakdown products, lindane, endrin, dieldrin, endosulfan) and industrial (PCBs) sources were measured. Sediment burdens for all compounds, even for an apparent hot spot near a refinery in Bahrain, were amongst the lowest reported for surface sediments from other seas. Concentrations of DDTs were low in the muscle and liver of all fish (orange spotted grouper and the spangled emperor) analysed. Similarly, the levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons were low in the various bivalve species, notably rock oysters and pearl oysters. These results contribute to the sparse regional database for organochlorinated compounds in the marine environment. Moreover, they can be used as the most recent end point for elucidating temporal trends. Whereas the levels, albeit relatively low, SigmaDDTs in the rock oysters from the Gulf of Oman have remained uniform, there has been an irregular but generally decreasing trend in concentrations of summation SigmaPCBs during the last two decades.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial chemicals which have been released into the environment resulting in widespread and persistent contamination. PCBs exist as 209 different congeners depending on the chlorine substitution on the biphenyl rings; the physical properties and the toxic effects of a PCB congener are structure-dependent. In this work, individual ortho-substituted non coplanar PCB congeners were tested for their effects on the function of mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam.) hemocytes. Moreover, the possibility that in mussel hemocytes different PCBs may affect the signal transduction pathways involved in the immune response was investigated, with particular regards to relevant components of tyrosine-kinase mediated cell signaling. The results were compared with those obtained with a model of non-ortho-substituted coplanar congener. The results demonstrate that the di-ortho-substituted, non coplanar PCB congeners P47 (2,2',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl) and P153 (2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl) can alter immune parameters of mussel hemocytes, such as microbicidal activity and lysosomal enzyme release, respectively. Both congeners, as well as the non-ortho, coplanar congener P77 (3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl) significantly reduced hemocyte lysosomal membrane stability; however, P77 had no effect on either bacterial killing or lysozyme release. P47, P153 and P77 affected different components of tyrosine kinase-mediated cell signalling; in particular, they lead to a time-dependent increase in the phosphorylation level of the stress activated p38 and JNK Mitogen Activated Protein Kinases (MAPKs), as evaluated by Western blotting of hemocyte protein extracts with specific anti-phospho-MAPK antibodies. P153 also increased the level of phosphorylated ERK (extracellularly regulated) MAPKs. Moreover, non coplanar P47 and P153 caused increased tyrosine phosphorylation of the transcription factor STAT5, thus possibly affecting gene expression, whereas coplanar P77 was ineffective. The results demonstrate that MAPKs, and in particular the stress-activated p38 and JNK MAPKs, that represents a key step in the response of mussel hemocytes to bacterial infection, are a target for different non coplanar and coplanar PCB congeners. The results also show functional differences between different PCB congeners with respect to the hemocyte functions. However, chlorine substitution at the ortho positions is not necessarily related to immunotoxicity: the hexachlorinated P128 (2,2',3,3',4,4'-hexachlorobiphenyl) had no significant effect on mussel hemocytes, whereas its isomer P153, that represents a major component of environmental PCBs, and that is accumulated in mussel tissues, significantly affected both aspects of the immune response and relevant signal transduction pathways. These are the first data on the effects and possible mechanisms of immunotoxicity of non coplanar PCBs in mussel hemocytes. The results support the hypothesis that the innate immune system is a sensitive target for these contaminants in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Moreover, when considering that non coplanar congeners are present both in commercial mixtures and, in higher proportions, in environmental samples, the results suggest that bivalve hemocytes represent a useful model for evaluating the potential immunotoxicity of PCB contamination.

Abstract
The main goals of this study were to define, for the Norwegian coast, "high background" levels of micropollutants routinely monitored within the the Oslo and Paris Commission Joint Assessment and Monitoring Programme, and to reassess the present Norwegian reference levels used as the basis for a classification of environmental quality. The indicator organisms analysed as bulked/individual samples were cod (Gadus morhua, n approximately 1170; n approximately 240 for organochlorines), dab (Limanda limanda, n approximately 75), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, n approximately 55) lemon sole (Microstomus kitt, n approximately 13). and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis, n approximately 200) collected between 1991-2000. Based on the 90-95 percentiles of measurements at localities far from point sources, we propose for liver of cod a reference level for SigmaPCB(7) (CBs 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180) of 500 microg kg(-1) w.w. and further for DDE 200 microg kg(-1), SigmaHCHs 30 microg kg(-1), HCB 20 and OCS 5 microgkg(-1) w.w. In the same order the proposed reference levels for liver of dab are: 150, 60, 15, 5, and 2 microgkg(-1) w.w.; and for the soft body of mussels: 3, 1, 1, 0.1 and 0.1 microg kg(-1) wet weight. Reference levels of metals are 0.1 mgHg kg(-1) w.w. in fish fillet, and for Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu in mussels 0.2, 2, 3, 200 and 10 mg kg(-1) d.w., respectively. Hg in fillet of cod and dab were positively correlated with length and weight. PCB levels in liver of cod and dab showed a positive but weak correlation with length, whereas no co-variation was found between PCBs and liver fat. The results of introductory recordings of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans, polychlorinated naphtalenes, Toxaphene and brominated flame retardants in liver of cod from reference sites are also presented.

Abstract
Contamination of persistent organochlorines (OCs) such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), DDT and its metabolites (DDTs), HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane) isomers (HCHs), chlordane compounds (CHLs), and HCB (hexachlorobenzene) were examined in mussels collected from coastal waters of Asian countries such as Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Far East Russia, Singapore, and Vietnam in 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001 to elucidate the contamination status, distribution and possible pollution sources and to assess the risks on aquatic organisms and human. OCs were detected in all mussels collected from all the sampling sites investigated. Considerable residue levels of p,p(')-DDT and alpha-HCH were found in mussels and the concentrations of DDTs and HCHs found in mussels from Asian developing countries were higher than those in developed nations suggesting present usage of DDTs and HCHs along the coastal waters of Asian developing countries. On the other hand, lower concentrations of PCBs detected in mussels from Asian developing countries than those in developed countries indicate that PCBs contamination in mussels is strongly related to industrial and activities. To our knowledge, this is a first comprehensive report on monitoring OCs pollution in the Asia-Pacific region.

Abstract
The biological effects of contaminants in British estuaries and coastal waters have been studied for over 100 years. Until the 1970s. the major pollution impact on estuarine organisms was probably caused by poorly treated sewage which led to severe oxygen deficits and consequent asphyxiation of many water-breathers. However, since the introduction of improved sewage treatment in the last 30 years, a number of continuing impacts have come to light which represent true toxic effects of micro-contaminants. Sublethal changes observed in various bioassays and biomarkers are widespread in both fish and invertebrates, and in the most urbanised and industrialised estuaries, these effects are probably having impacts at the population and community levels. For example, there is good evidence to show that tributyltin from some antifouling paints has not only affected the sexuality and reproductive success of individual estuarine and coastal molluscs, but has also damaged some benthic communities of which molluscs are but a part. Although there are data to show that some contaminant concentrations are now declining, we do not yet have enough data in most cases to decide whether organisms have also begun to recover. This paper reviews the entire field of contaminant effects in UK estuarine and marine waters, focusing especially on the years 1985-2000, and makes some recommendations for future research and monitoring programmes.
