Deficiencies in human neonates' color vision: photoreceptoral and neural explanations

Changes in event-related brain responses and habituation during child development - A systematic literature review

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review highlights the influence of developmental changes of the central nervous system on habituation assessment during child development. Therefore, studies on age dependant changes in event-related brain responses as well as studies on behavioural and neurophysiological habituation during child development are compiled and discussed.

METHODS

Two PubMed searches with terms "(development evoked brain response (fetus OR neonate OR children) (electroencephalography OR magnetoencephalography))" and with terms "(psychology habituation (fetal OR neonate OR children) (human brain))" were performed to identify studies on developmental changes in event-related brain responses as well as habituation studies during child development.

RESULTS

Both search results showed a wide diversity of subjects' ages, stimulation protocols and examined behaviour or components of event-related brain responses as well as a demand for more longitudinal study designs.

CONCLUSIONS

A conclusive statement about clear developmental trends in event-related brain responses or in neurophysiological habituation studies is difficult to draw. Future studies should implement longitudinal designs, combination of behavioural and neurophysiological habituation measurement and more complex habituation paradigms to assess several habituation criteria.

SIGNIFICANCE

This review emphasizes that event-related brain responses underlie certain changes during child development which should be more considered in the context of neurophysiological habituation studies.

The human newborn's umwelt: Unexplored pathways and perspectives

Historically, newborns, and especially premature newborns, were thought to "feel nothing." However, over the past decades, a growing body of evidence has shown that newborns are aware of their environment, but the extent and the onset of some sensory capacities remain largely unknown. The goal of this review is to update our current knowledge concerning newborns' perceptual world and how ready they are to cope with an entirely different sensory environment following birth. We aim to establish not only how and when each sensory ability arises during the pre-/postbirth period but also discuss how senses are studied. We conclude that although many studies converge to show that newborns are clearly sentient beings, much is still unknown. Further, we identify a series of internal and external factors that could explain discrepancies between studies, and we propose perspectives for future studies. Finally, through examples from animal studies, we illustrate the importance of this detailed knowledge to pursue the enhancement of newborns' daily living conditions. Indeed, this is a prerequisite for assessing the effects of the physical environment and routine procedures on newborns' welfare.

Visão de cores no primeiro ano de vida

Procedimentos comportamentais que permitem inferir capacidades sensoriais ou perceptuais em bebês e crianças baseiam-se, na sua maior parte, na descoberta seminal feita no fim da década de 1950 pelo psicólogo Robert Fantz. Desde o nascimento, há uma preferência do bebê por dirigir o olhar para estímulos complexos a fixá-lo em cenas monótonas. Baseado no novo conhecimento, o grupo liderado por Davida Teller na Universidade de Washington desenvolveu uma metodologia de avaliação psicofísica da visão em bebês, o que possibilitou grande avanço no estudo do desenvolvimento e da maturação de várias funções visuais básicas, como acuidade visual, visão de cores, visão de contrastes, estereopsia e visão de movimento. A presente revisão examina essa literatura, mostrando como é avaliada a visão em bebês e o que se conhece até o momento sobre a capacidade dos recém-nascidos de ver cores.

Medidas psicofísicas e eletrofisiológicas da função visual do recém nascido: uma revisão

O sistema visual apresenta muitas funções ao nascimento. O processo de amadurecimento destas funções demanda um tempo variado. Neste trabalho, inicialmente descreveremos como a psicofísica e a eletrofisiologia visual tem colaborado para a medida e o estudo do desenvolvimento de três funções visuais: acuidade visual, sensibilidade ao contraste e visão de cores. Num segundo momento, discutimos sobre como a medida e o desenvolvimento destas funções podem estar prejudicados em patologias que afetam o sistema visual, como a prematuridade e a paralisia cerebral.

Human newborn color vision: measurement with chromatic stimuli varying in excitation purity

Groups of newborn human infants (N = 180) were habituated to large 16 degrees achromatic ("white") lights of varying luminance (0.35 to 1.16 log cd/m2) and then tested for recovery of habituation to 16 degrees green (dominant lambda = 545 nm), yellow (dominant lambda = 585 nm) or red (dominant lambda = 650 nm) lights which varied in the level of excitation purity (range = 32 to 83%). Results showed that newborns discriminated the chromatic stimuli from white only when excitation purity values exceeded at least 41% for 545-nm green, 47% for 650-nm red, and 65% for 585-nm yellow, limits much higher than those for adults (<1%). Taken together with the results from previous experiments, these saturation discrimination data (with the exception of the yellow data), provide some support for an expanded MacAdam ellipse model of early color discrimination (Brown, 1993; Teller & Lindsey, 1993). This helps reinforce the current view that neonates' vision is based on general rather than selective immaturities or inefficiencies within the requisite optical, photoreceptoral and neural mechanisms.

Infant color vision: moving tritan stimuli do not elicit directionally appropriate eye movements in 2- and 4-month-olds

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the capacity of infants to code the direction of motion of moving tritan-modulated gratings. Infant and adult subjects were tested with 0.2 c/d sinusoidal gratings moving at a speed of 20 deg/sec. Three conditions were tested: luminance-modulated gratings, tritan-modulated gratings, and luminance- vs tritan-modulated gratings superimposed and moving in opposite directions in a chromatic motion nulling paradigm. Two-month-old infants were tested in all three conditions, while 4-month-olds were tested in only the first two conditions. For infant subjects, an adult observer reported the direction of the slow phase of the infant's eye movements; adult subjects judged the perceived direction of motion of the stimuli. Luminance-modulated gratings produced directionally appropriate eye movements (DEM) in all age groups. Tritan gratings presented alone did not produce DEM in either 2- or 4-month-olds, but did so in adults. Mean equivalent luminance contrasts were near zero in 2-month-olds, and small but reliably above zero in adults. In sum, the present study provides no evidence that infants can code the direction of motion of moving tritan gratings.

Development of chromatic discrimination in early infancy

Combining a habituation-recovery paradigm with procedures to minimize brightness cues, we evaluated 1-3-month-olds' ability to discriminate among broadband mid- and long-wavelength stimuli. One-month olds showed evidence of discriminating a red (dominant lambda = 650 nm) from green (dominant lambda = 545 nm) but failed to discriminate either of these from a yellow (dominant lambda = 585 nm). At 2 months, infants showed evidence of discriminating 545-nm green from 585-nm yellow, but only at 3 months do they appear to discriminate 650-nm red from the yellow. Consistent with previous work, these data imply that chromatic discrimination emerges slowly over the first three postnatal months. Moreover, the developmental pattern is consistent with the notion that early human vision is limited by general rather than selective immaturities within the requisite retinal and neural mechanisms.

Systematic measurement of human neonatal color vision

We used a new time-efficient method to evaluate chromatic-achromatic discrimination in newborn (n = 36) and 1-month-old (n = 34) human infants. Results showed that 74% of newborns discriminated a 10.5 x 17.5 deg broadband red patch from all relative luminances of an achromatic background, but only 14% of newborns did so with a blue, 36% with a green, and 25% with a yellow patch. Most infants who "failed" did so at relative luminances very close to the respective photopic luminance match. At 1 month, performance improved somewhat although infants still show clear evidence of discriminating only the red patch. These results, the first to be obtained from individual newborns with a method incorporating a systematic variation of luminance, imply that early color vision is very limited. Possible photoreceptoral and neural bases for these immaturities are discussed.

Does chromatic sensitivity develop more slowly than luminance sensitivity?

Chromatic sensitivity is very low in humans during the first few months of life. We examined whether low chromatic sensitivity reflects a deficiency among chromatic mechanisms or whether it is simply a manifestation of poor visual sensitivity in general. The sweep VEP was used to measure contrast sensitivity to gratings varying in the mixture of red and green components. For infants from 2 to 8 weeks of age, sensitivity to all mixtures was lower than color-normal adults' sensitivity, but infant and adult ratios of luminance/chromatic sensitivity were similar. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that infants have functional MWS and LWS cones and the requisite post-receptor chromatic mechanisms to compare their signals.

Development of color vision in goldfish: selective delayed maturation of blue vision

Wavelength discriminations in juvenile and adult goldfish were measured among three sensitivity maxima (450, 525 and 625 nm) of goldfish cone photoreceptors using a "go/no-go" (electroshock avoidance) task. The ability of juveniles to discriminate was significantly poorer in 450/525 nm and 450/625 nm discriminations than that of adults. While only a few juveniles acquired clear discriminative responses, there was a greater proportion of adults. In contrast to those discriminations, the ability of juveniles to discriminate between 525 and 625 nm was similar to that of adults. These results suggest that juveniles, in contrast to adults, have selective delayed development of the blue-sensitive mechanism. Some possible explanations for the poor blue discrimination of juveniles are proposed.
