Abstract
Weaned piglets, being immature, demand careful handling to mitigate post-weaning stress in order to avoid immunosuppression and the use of antimicrobials to palliate the effects of disease outbreaks due to poor management. The objective of this work is to design a quick scan calculator or multi-criteria evaluation model of management for weaned piglets, founded on 10 critical indices covering post-weaning management aspects based on hygienic measures and management of facilities and animals. These include pre-weaning handling, batch management, biosecurity, water management, feed management, health program, stockmen training, temperature, ventilation, and floor conditions and density to relate handling and hygiene practices with farm performance and the consumption of veterinary medication. Each index carries a maximum score of ten, with evaluations derived from different management factors that make up each index (from three to eight factors were evaluated per index). Their cumulative score reflects the degree of adequacy of on-farm management. Therefore, a perfectly managed farm would achieve 100 points. The calculator underwent testing on 23 intensive farms with a total population of close to 16,000 sows and more than 400,000 weaned piglets, revealing the highest mean scores in floor conditions and density (8.03 out of 10) and pre-weaning handling and health programs (6.87 and 6.28, respectively). Conversely, the lowest scores corresponded to temperature, ventilation, water management, and stockmen training (4.08, 4.32, 4.81, and 4.93, respectively). The assessed farms averaged a global score of 56.12 out of 100 (from 37.65 to 76.76). The calculator's global score correlated with key post-weaning productivity and piglet health indicators, such as the feed conversion ratio, mortality rate, and piglet production cost, with r values of -0.442, -0.437, and -0.435, respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, it negatively correlated with medication costs per piglet (r = -0.414; p < 0.05) and positively with annual farm productivity (r = 0.592; p < 0.01). To enhance management, hygiene, and prevention, farms should prioritize addressing indices with the lowest scores, thereby reducing medication consumption and enhancing productivity and health outcomes. Additionally, this quick scan calculator can be used for benchmarking purposes.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between different productive factors and piglets weaned per sow per year (PSY) in 291 large-scale pig farms and analyze the impact of the changes in different factors on PSY. We chose nine different algorithm models based on machine learning to calculate the influence of each variable on every farm according to its current situation, leading to personalize the improvement of the impact in the specific circumstances of each farm, proposing a production guidance plan of PSY improvement for every farm. According to the comparison of mean absolute error (MAE), 95% confidence interval (CI) and R2, the optimal solution was conducted to calculate the influence of 17 production factors of each pig farm on PSY improvement, finding out the bottleneck corresponding to each pig farm. The level of PSY was further analyzed when the bottleneck factor of each pig farm changed by 0.5 standard deviation (SD). Results 17 production factors were non-linearly related to PSY. The top five production factors with the highest correlation with PSY were the number of weaned piglets per litter (WPL) (0.6694), mating rate within 7 days after weaning (MR7DW) (0.6606), number of piglets born alive per litter (PBAL) (0.6517), the total number of piglets per litter (TPL) (0.5706) and non-productive days (NPD) (− 0.5308). Among nine algorithm models, the gradient boosting regressor model had the highest R2, smallest MAE and 95% CI, applied for personalized analysis. When one of 17 production factors of 291 large-scale pig farms changed by 0.5 SD, 101 pig farms (34.7%) can increase 1.41 PSY (compared to its original value) on average by adding the production days, and 60 pig farms (20.6%) can increase 1.14 PSY on average by improving WPL, 45 pig farms (15.5%) can increase 1.63 PSY by lifting MR7DW. Conclusions The main productive factors related to PSY included WPL, MR7DW, PBAL, TPL and NPD. The gradient boosting regressor model was the optimal method to individually analyze productive factors that are non-linearly related to PSY. Abstract
This scientific opinion focuses on the welfare of pigs on farm, and is based on literature and expert opinion. All pig categories were assessed: gilts and dry sows, farrowing and lactating sows, suckling piglets, weaners, rearing pigs and boars. The most relevant husbandry systems used in Europe are described. For each system, highly relevant welfare consequences were identified, as well as related animal-based measures (ABMs), and hazards leading to the welfare consequences. Moreover, measures to prevent or correct the hazards and/or mitigate the welfare consequences are recommended. Recommendations are also provided on quantitative or qualitative criteria to answer specific questions on the welfare of pigs related to tail biting and related to the European Citizen's Initiative 'End the Cage Age'. For example, the AHAW Panel recommends how to mitigate group stress when dry sows and gilts are grouped immediately after weaning or in early pregnancy. Results of a comparative qualitative assessment suggested that long-stemmed or long-cut straw, hay or haylage is the most suitable material for nest-building. A period of time will be needed for staff and animals to adapt to housing lactating sows and their piglets in farrowing pens (as opposed to crates) before achieving stable welfare outcomes. The panel recommends a minimum available space to the lactating sow to ensure piglet welfare (measured by live-born piglet mortality). Among the main risk factors for tail biting are space allowance, types of flooring, air quality, health status and diet composition, while weaning age was not associated directly with tail biting in later life. The relationship between the availability of space and growth rate, lying behaviour and tail biting in rearing pigs is quantified and presented. Finally, the panel suggests a set of ABMs to use at slaughter for monitoring on-farm welfare of cull sows and rearing pigs.

Background
Finding out the key reproductive performance factors, affecting piglets weaned per sow per year (PSY) can improve the production efficiency and profitability of pig farms. The objective was to understand the actual distribution of different production factors and PSY of breeding pig farms, analyze the correlation to find the main production factors affecting PSY, and formulating a Production Efficiency Improvement Plan in practice. Data included 603 breeding pig farms from September 28, 2020 to September 26, 2021. Regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between PSY and key production factors, and the characteristics of total pig farms versus high performance (HP) pig farms (the production performance was in the top 10%) or top 5% pig farms were compared. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between production factors and find the factors related to PSY. Non-linear support vector regression (NL-SVR) was used to analyze the personalized PSY improvement through a various change of the four key factors.
Results
The median distribution of 15 production factors and PSY in total pig farms were different from those of HP farms. All of data were distributed nonlinearly. Mating rate within 7 days after weaning (MR7DW), farrowing rate (FR), number of piglets born alive per litter (PBAL) and number of weaned piglets per litter (WPL) were moderately correlated with PSY, and the correlation coefficients were 0.5058, 0.4427, 0.3929 and 0.3839, respectively. When the four factors in NL-SVR changed in medium (0.5 piglet or 5%) or high level (1.0 piglet or 10%), PSY can be increased by more than 0.5.
Conclusion
NL-SVR model can be used to analyze the impact of changes in key production factors on PSY. By taking measures to improve MR7DW, FR, PBAL and WPL, it may effectively improve the current PSY and fully develop the reproductive potential of sows.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Piglet pre-weaning mortality (PWM) is one of the biggest problems regarding sow performance and piglet welfare. Recently, PWM has increased in some countries, but it is not known if there are similar increases in other countries, nor whether increased PWM is related to either increased numbers of piglets born alive (PBA) or to sow herd size. So, the objectives of the present study were 1) to explore the trend in PWM in Spanish sow herds over a recent 10-year period, along with related measurements such as PBA, stillborn piglets, herd productivity and herd size; and 2) to examine the relationships between PWM and the related measurements. METHODS Herd-level annual data from 2007 to 2016 for 91 herds in Spain were abstracted from a sow database compiled by a veterinary consultancy firm that asked client producers to mail data files on a regular basis. The database software automatically calculated herd-level PWM (%) as follows: the total number of piglets born alive to a sow completely weaned during a year (TPBA) minus the total number of piglets weaned by the completely weaned sow during the year divided by TPBA × 100. All the statistical analyses were performed by using SAS University Edition. A growth curve model was applied to incorporate correlations for all of the observations arising from the same farm. RESULTS Over the 10 years, herd means of PWM (standard deviation) increased from 11.9 (4.1) % to 14.4 (3.2) %, and mean PBA increased by 1.9 pigs. Mean age of piglet death during lactation increased by 3.8 days, and later years were significantly associated with herd size and the number of piglets weaned per sow per year (PSY; P < 0.05). Higher PWM was associated with more PBA, more stillborn piglets and small-to-mid herds (lower than the median size: < 570 sows; P < 0.05). Also, there was a significant interaction between the herd size groups and PBA for PWM (P < 0.05): as PBA increased from 9 to 14 pigs, PWM increased by 9.6% in small-to-mid herds, compared with an increase of only 6.6% in large herds (> 570 sows). Furthermore, as PWM decreased from 18 to 8%, herd productivity measured as PSY increased by 2.2 pigs in large herds, compared with only 0.6 pigs in small-to-mid herds. CONCLUSION Large herds were better than small-to-mid herds at alleviating the association between increased PBA and increased PWM. Also, the relationship between decreased PWM and increased herd productivity was improved more in large herds than in small-to-mid herds.

Abstract
Our objectives in this review are 1) to define the four components of sow lifetime performance, 2) to organize the four components and other key measures in a lifetime performance tree, and 3) to compile information about sow and herd-level predictors for sow lifetime performance that can help producers or veterinarians improve their decision making. First, we defined the four components of sow lifetime performance: lifetime efficiency, sow longevity, fertility and prolificacy. We propose that lifetime efficiency should be measured as annualized piglets weaned or annualized piglets born alive which is an integrated measure for sow lifetime performance, whereas longevity should be measured as sow life days and herd-life days which are the number of days from birth to removal and the number of days from date of first-mating to removal, respectively. We also propose that fertility should be measured as lifetime non-productive days, whereas prolificacy should be measured as lifetime pigs born alive. Second, we propose two lifetime performance trees for annualized piglets weaned and annualized piglets born alive, respectively, and show inter-relationships between the four components of the lifetime performance in these trees. Third, we describe sow and herd-level predictors for high lifetime performance of sows. An example of a sow-level predictor is that gilts with lower age at first-mating are associated with higher lifetime performance in all four components. Other examples are that no re-service in parity 0 and shorter weaning-to-first-mating interval in parity 1 are associated with higher fertility, whereas more piglets born in parity 1 is associated with higher prolificacy. It appears that fertility and prolificacy are independent each other. Furthermore, sows with high prolificacy and high fertility are more likely to have high longevity and high efficiency. Also, an increased number of stillborn piglets indicates that sows have farrowing difficulty or a herd health problem. Regarding herd-level predictors, large herd size is associated with higher efficiency. Also, herd-level predictors can interact with sow level predictors for sow lifetime performance. For example, sow longevity decreases more in large herds than small-to-mid herds, whereas gilt age at first-mating increases. So, it appears that herd size alters the impact of delayed gilt age at first-mating on sow longevity. Increased knowledge of these four components of sow lifetime performance and their predictors should help producers and veterinarians maximize a sow's potential and optimize her lifetime productivity in breeding herds.

Abstract
Background Our objectives were to characterize sow life and herd-life performance and examine two-way interactions between age at first-mating (AFM) and either herd size or herd productivity groups for the performance of sows. Data contained 146,140 sows in 143 Spanish herds. Sow life days is defined as the number of days from birth to removal, whereas the herd-life days is from AFM date to removal date. Herds were categorized into two herd size groups and two productivity groups based on the respective 75th percentiles of farm means of herd size and the number of piglets weaned per sows per year: large (> 1017 sows) or small-to-mid herds (< 1017 sows), and high productivity (> 26.5 piglets) or ordinary herds (< 26.5 piglets). A two-level liner mixed-effects model was applied to examine AFM, herd size groups, productivity groups and their interactions for sow life or herd-life performance. Results No differences were found between either herd size or herd productivity groups for AFM or the number of parity at removal. However, late AFM was associated with decreased removal parity, herd-life days, herd-life piglets born alive and herd-life annualized piglets weaned, as well as with increased sow life days and herd-life nonproductive days (P < 0.05). Also, significant two-way interactions between AFM and both herd size and productivity groups were found for longevity, prolificacy, fertility and reproductive efficiency of sows. For example, as AFM increased from 190 to 370 days, sows in large herds decreased herd-life days by 156 days, whereas for sows in small-to-mid herds the decrease was only 42 days. Also, for the same AFM increase, sows in large herds had 5 fewer sow life annualized piglets weaned, whereas for sows in small-to-mid herds this sow reproductive efficiency measure was only decreased by 3.5 piglets. Additionally, for ordinary herds, sows in large herds had more herd-life annualized piglets weaned than those in small-to-mid herds (P < 0.05), but no such association was found for high productivity herds (P > 0.10). Conclusion We recommend decreasing the number of late AFM sows in the herd and also recommend improving longevity and lifetime efficiency of individual sows.

Abstract
To understand the production factors that affect conclusive parameters of sow herd performance can improve the use of the resources and profitability of farm. The objective of this study was to identify associations and quantify the effects of a set of factors related to piglet weight at weaning (PWW), kilograms of piglets weaned per sow per year (kgPWSY) and sow feed conversion (SFC). Data from 150 farms were collected, for a total study population of 135 168 sows, including gilt replacement, breeding (mating), gestation and farrowing/lactation phases. A questionnaire focusing on reproductive performance, management, facilities, feeding, health and biosafety was administered. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess associations among factors with each of the three dependent variables. Increased duration of lactation was positively associated with PWW, kgPWSY and SFC. The increase in the number of live born pigs per litter was positively associated with kgPWSY and with SFC. Farms with higher PWW had farrowing room humidifiers, did not surgically castrate male piglets and used quaternary ammonia compounds for farrowing room disinfection. Farms with higher kgPWSY used lined ceilings in farrowing rooms and winter feeds with higher CP percentages in gestation; they also had more farrowings per sow per year. Sow feed conversion was worse in farms with partly slatted floors during gestation, in farms feeding lactating sows six times a day or ad libitum and farms with a higher sow-handler ratio. This study indicates that farms can increase PWW and kgPWSY and improve the SFC by changing one or more management, biosafety and feeding practices or facilities as well as by focusing on improving several performance parameters, particularly increasing the duration of lactation and the number of live born pigs per litter.

Abstract
Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is an emerging and/or re-emerging disease of pigs in several countries, with high morbidity and mortality in suckling piglets. Farms affected with PED perform various intervention practices to control and/or eliminate the PED virus. The objectives of the present study were to assess the effect of biosecurity measures and intervention practices to control PED on time to absence of clinical signs (TAC) and number of dead suckling piglets during TAC. A questionnaire was administered to 120-PED affected farms located across Japan between 2013, when the first case was reported in Japan, and 2014. Farms were asked to provide information on farm characteristics and internal or external biosecurity measures during PED outbreak, as well as on intervention practices to control PED. The TAC was defined as the number of days from the date that clinical PED signs appeared to the date that clinical PED signs disappeared. The number of dead piglets per sow (DP/S) was calculated as the number of dead suckling piglets during TAC divided by the sow inventory. Regarding the effect of biosecurity measures during PED outbreak on TAC and DP/S, longer TAC was observed in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae-positive farms and farms outsourcing pig transport to the slaughterhouse (p < 0.05). In addition, farms with divided truck entrances had lower DP/S than those without divided entrances (p < 0.05).Regarding the effect of intervention practices to control PED on TAC and DP/S, farms that performed feedback at 2 weeks or later after PED outbreak had longer TAC and higher DP/S than other farms (p < 0.05). Farms that fixed the hours staff worked in farrowing barn had lower DP/S than the other farms (p < 0.05). In conclusion, variables associated with long TAC were Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae -positive farms, farms outsourcing pig transport to the slaughterhouse, and farms performing feedback at 2 week or later after PED outbreak. Additionally, those associated with high DP/S were farms without divided entrances, farms without a fixed hours worked in the barn, and farms that performed feedback at 2 week or later after PED outbreak.

Abstract
In pig production, Pietrain and Duroc lines are often used as terminal sire lines to produce crossbred slaughter pigs. The objective of this study was to identify the differences in paternal fertility and mortality during the suckling period of crossbred progeny from Pietrain and Duroc terminal sire lines. In total, 87 purebred Duroc boars and 68 purebred Pietrain boars were used as terminal sires to produce 1,823 crossbred Duroc litters (D-litters) and 1,705 crossbred Pietrain litters (P-litters) in two production herds. The sows were crosses between DanBred Landrace and Yorkshire (F1). All boars were kept at the same artificial insemination (AI) station, and all semen doses were produced in the same laboratory. The experiment was balanced according to herd, boars, and time, with approximately 13 sows from each herd mated to each boar within each breed. The results showed higher fertility expressed as litter size at birth in P-litters compared with D-litters led to 0.5 higher total number born (TNB) for P-litters (P = 0.0076). However, piglet mortality including number of stillborn piglets was lower in D-litters compared with P-litters (P < 0.0001), and 5 d after farrowing, the average litter size in P-litters ranged 0.4 below the litter size in D-litters (P < 0.027). At 21 d after birth, mean litter size in P- and D-litters were 14.5 and 14.9 piglets per litter, respectively (P < 0.015). This indicated that Pietrain progenies were weaker than Duroc progenies, and it was concluded that use of Duroc boars as the terminal sire line led to lower piglet mortality. In the two herds, the mean piglet mortality rate including still born piglets ranged from 19.5% to 23.6% and from 17.6% to 19.1% in P- and D-litters, respectively.

Abstract
Background The objectives of our study were 1) to characterize culling and retention patterns in parities 0 to 6 in served females and farrowed sows in two herd groups, and 2) to quantify the factors associated with by-parity culling risks for both groups in commercial herds. Lifetime data from first-service to removal included 465,947 service records of 94,691 females served between 2008 and 2013 in 98 Spanish herds. Herds were categorized into two groups based on the upper 25th percentile of the herd means of annualized lifetime pigs weaned per sow: high-performing (> 24.7 pigs) and ordinary herds (≤ 24.7 pigs). Two-level log-binomial regression models were used to examine risk factors and relative risk ratios associated with by-parity culling risks. Results Mean by-parity culling risks (± SE) for served females and farrowed sows were 5.9 ± 0.03 and 12.4 ± 0.05%, respectively. Increased culling risks were associated with sows that farrowed 8 or fewer pigs born alive (PBA). Also, farrowed sows in high-performing herds in parities 2 to 6 had 1.5–5.6% higher culling risk than equivalent parity sows in ordinary herds (P < 0.05). Furthermore, sows in parities 1 to 6 that farrowed 3 or more stillborn piglets had 2.2–4.8% higher culling risk than for sows that did not farrow any stillborn piglets (P < 0.05). For served sows, culling risk in parity 1 to 6 sows with a weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI) of 7 days or more were 2.2–3.9% higher than equivalent parity sows with WSI 0–6 days (P < 0.05). With regard to relative risk ratios, served sows with WSI 7 days or more were 1.56–1.81 times more likely to be culled than those with WSI 0–6 days. Conclusion Producers should reduce non-productive days by culling sows after weaning, instead of after service or during pregnancy. Also, producers should pay special attention to sows farrowing stillborn piglets or having prolonged WSI, and reconsider culling policy for mid-parity sows when they farrow 8 or fewer PBA. Abstract
BACKGROUND Repeat-breeder females increase non-productive days (NPD) and decrease herd productivity and profitability. The objectives of the present study were 1) to define severe repeat-breeder (SRB) females in commercial breeding herds, 2) to characterize the pattern of SRB occurrences across parities, 3) to examine factors associated with SRB risk, and 4) to compare lifetime reproductive performances of SRB and non-SRB females. Data included 501,855 service records and lifetime records of 93,604 breeding-female pigs in 98 Spanish herds between 2008 and 2013. An SRB female pig was defined as either a pig that had three or more returns. The 98 herds were classified into high-, intermediate- and low-performing herds based by the upper and lower 25th percentiles of the herd mean of annualized lifetime pigs weaned per sow. Multi-level mixed-effects logistic regression models with random intercept were applied to the data. RESULTS Of 93,604 females, 1.2% of females became SRB pigs in their lifetime, with a mean SRB risk per service (± SEM) of 0.26 ± 0.01%. Risks factors for becoming an SRB pig were low parity, being first-served in summer, having a prolonged weaning-to-first-mating interval (WMI), and being in low-performing herds. For example, served gilts had 0.81% higher SRB risk than served sows (P < 0.01). Also, female pigs in a low-performing herd had 1.19% higher SRB risks than those in a high-performing herd. However, gilt age at-first-mating (P = 0.08), lactation length (P = 0.05) and number of stillborn piglets (P = 0.28) were not associated with becoming an SRB female. The SRB females had 14.4-16.4 fewer lifetime pigs born alive, 42.8-91.3 more lifetime NPD, and 2.1-2.2 lower parities at culling than non-SRB females (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We recommend that producers closely monitor the female pig groups at higher risk of becoming an SRB.

Abstract
We review critical factors associated with reproductive performance of female breeding pigs, their lifetime performance and herd productivity in commercial herds. The factors include both sow-level and herd-level factors. High risk sow-level groups for decreasing reproductive performance of female pigs are low or high parity, increased outdoor temperature, decreased lactation feed intake, single inseminations, increased lactation length, prolonged weaning-to-first-mating interval, low birth weight or low preweaning growth rate, a few pigs born alive at parity 1, an increased number of stillborn piglets, foster-in or nurse sow practices and low or high age at first-mating. Also, returned female pigs are at risk having a recurrence of returning to estrus, and female pigs around farrowing are more at risk of dying. Herd-level risk groups include female pigs being fed in low efficiency breeding herds, late insemination timing, high within-herd variability in pig flow, limited numbers of farrowing spaces and fluctuating age structure. To maximize the reproductive potential of female pigs, producers are recommended to closely monitor females in these high-risk groups and improve herd management. Additionally, herd management and performance measurements in high-performing herds should be targeted.

Abstract
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an important pathogen that has a significant economic impact on the swine industry by imposing a high rate of mortality in suckling piglets. However, limited information on the productivity values of gilts and sows infected with PEDV is available. Here, we evaluate the productivity index in gilts and sows during the 1-year period before (19 January 2013 to 18 January 2014) and after (19 January 2014 to 18 January 2015) a PEDV outbreak from a 2000-sow breeding herd in Taiwan. The farrowing rate (FR), return rate (RR), total pigs born per litter (TB), pigs born alive per litter (BA), weaning pigs per litter (WPL), pre-weaning mortality, percentage of sows mated by 7 days after weaning, weaning to first service interval (WFSI), mated female nonproductive days (NPDs), replacement rate of sows and sow culling rate were compared using productive records. The FR (-9.6%), RR (+9.8%), TB (-1.6), BA (-1.1), WPL (-1.1), sows mated by 7 days after weaning (-6.9%), WFSI (+0.8 days), NPDs (+6.9 days) and sow culling rate (+7.2%) were significantly different between the 1-year pre-PEDV outbreak period and the post-PEDV outbreak period. Impacts of the PEDV infection on the reproductive performance were more severe in pregnant gilts than in sows. In conclusion, these findings indicate that the outbreak of PEDV caused an increase in the rate of NPDs in breeding herds.

Abstract
Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is an emerging disease of pigs that has recently led to large numbers of piglet deaths in a number of countries of Eastern Asia and The Americas. The objective of the present study was to identify and compare risk factors associated with PED infection in locally and non-locally PED-exposed farms in Japan. A questionnaire was administered to a convenience selection of pig farms located throughout Japan. Questionnaires were administered between November 2013 (when the first case was reported in Japan) and August 2014. PED-positive farms (cases, n=124) were asked to provide information on their status (positive or negative) and select herd management practices for the two weeks prior to onset of PED clinical signs. Negative farms (controls, n=128) were given the same questionnaire and asked herd management practices for the two weeks prior to a given reference date. This date was assigned based on the date of PED occurrence in the town/prefecture in which the farm was located. Case and control farms were categorized as "locally exposed" if they were located within a 5km radius from a PED-infected farm and "non-locally exposed", otherwise. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with PED infection. Two separate regressions were done for locally exposed and non-locally exposed farms using PED status (positive/negative) as the dependent variable. PED in locally-exposed farms was associated (P<0.05) with increased farm size (in 100 pig increments), shorter distances to the closest PED-positive farm (less than1,001m), and a disinfectant contact time of less than 20min. In non-locally exposed farms, PED was associated (P<0.05) with increased feed truck visits to the farm, no visit of the veterinarian, and again a disinfectant contact time of less than 20min. These findings suggest that the mechanisms of PED spread in Japan were different for farms closer to case-farms compared to farms that were further away from PED cases. These results will contribute to understanding the epidemiology of the disease in Japan and will ultimately aid in designing and implementing effective prevention and control strategies in Japan and other regions epidemically infected by the PED virus.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate pathologically the reproductive system of nonvaccinated and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-vaccinated sows/gilts, as well as the assessment of vaccination impact on their endometrium/myometrium and ovaries. In a farrow-to-finish farm, all sows and gilts were systematically vaccinated with a PRRSV-inactivated vaccine for a period of 18 months. During the last semester before the beginning of the trial, the genital organs (uterus and ovaries) from 50 females (nonvaccinated primiparous and multiparous sows that did not exhibit signs of estrus until 10 days post-weaning) were collected at the slaughterhouse for gross and microscopic examination (parity 1 to >6). Respectively, during the following three semesters after the implementation of the experimental PRRSV vaccination scheme, the genital organs from 75 vaccinated sows-25 samples taken along the period of each semester-were also collected. Gross examinations included measurements of uterine horn (thickness and diameter) and ovaries (diameter). Microscopic examination focused on histopathological examination of ovarian cysts or other cystic formations and evaluation of the endometrium and myometrium. Measurements of uterine horn's thickness/diameter and ovaries' diameter were at normal levels, and no significant differences were found on gross examination between vaccinated and nonvaccinated females. The results of histopathological examinations did not show lesions of endometritis or myometritis, but revealed ovarian cystic formations with a diameter of >2 cm that were luteinizing cysts. The presence of these luteinizing cysts was significantly lower in PRRSV-vaccinated animals, compared to nonvaccinated, three semesters (p=0.017) after the start of vaccinations and for the total trial period (p=0.009).

Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to advance the development of standard operating procedures for sows and piglets during farrowing and lactation in Japanese herds by surveying management procedures and to examine the relationships between the procedures and herd reproductive performance. In 2009, 115 herds using the same recording system were asked to complete a questionnaire about their management procedures. Data from 96 (83.5%) returned questionnaires were coordinated with the respective herd reproductive performance. The participating herds were classified into two groups based on the upper 25th percentile of pigs weaned per mated female per year: high-performing (>23.8 pigs) or ordinary herds. ANOVA was used to compare the procedures between two herd groups. Modeling with backward elimination was performed to establish the most important procedures for herd performance. More high-performing herds practiced farrowing induction and high-performing herds also had a higher percentage of farrowing-induced sows than ordinary herds (P<0.05). Modeling showed that herds feeding lactating sows with dietary fiber had 1.4% lower preweaning mortality risk than those that did not (P<0.05). Herds practicing fostering techniques or using nurse sows had 0.2 kg heavier average pig weaning weight than those not using these procedures (P<0.05). There was no association between pigs born alive and any of the surveyed management procedures. Based on these results, we recommend improving performances in breeding herds by feeding lactating sows with dietary fiber, performing fostering techniques and using nurse sows.

Abstract
The primary objectives were to improve standard operating procedures for gilt development and mating, based on a comparison of practices among commercial Japanese herds with varying reproductive performance. Questionnaires were sent to 115 herds; the 96 herds (83.5%) responding were classified, on the basis of the upper and lower 25th percentiles of pigs weaned per mated female per year, into high-, intermediate- or low-performing herds. During gilt development, high-performing herds switched to a gilt developer diet at an earlier age than low-performing herds (P < 0.05). More high-performing herds performed first insemination "immediately," with second insemination "6 to 12 h" after first estrus detection than low-performing herds (P < 0.05). However, there were no differences (P > 0.05) among productivity groups with regard to the use of nutritional flushing or percentage of AI used. In multilevel analyses (17,582 service records), gilts in herds using direct boar contact were 13.73 d younger at first mating than those in the herds using indirect boar contact (P < 0.05), but age was not related to feeding practices or the number of days of boar contact per week (P > 0.05). First-serviced gilts in the herds that performed first insemination "immediately" after first estrus detection had an 8.3 to 8.4% higher farrowing rate (FR) than those in herds that performed first insemination at "6 to 12 h" and "24 h" (P < 0.01). Reserviced gilts in the herds with first insemination "immediately" after first estrus detection had 7.5% higher FR than those in herds with first insemination at "6 to 12 h" (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, first-serviced and reserviced gilts in herds that restricted feed after insemination had 0.23 and 0.17 more pigs born alive (PBA) than gilts in the herds that did not restrict feed (P < 0.05). However, PBA was not related to time of insemination (P > 0.05). In conclusion, to improve gilt reproductive performance, we recommend stimulating gilt estrus by using direct boar contact, performing first insemination "immediately" after first estrus detection, and restricting feed intake after insemination.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to measure culling intervals and culling risks in the four stages of the reproductive life of female pigs and to compare culling intervals between the number of services and between herd groups, based on herd productivity. We also compared survival patterns of females pigs between these herd groups. Our data set included lifetime records of 52,792 females born between 2001 and 2004 in 101 commercial herds. Two herd groups were selected on the basis of the upper 25th percentile of pigs weaned per mated female per 5 yr between 2002 and 2006, namely the high-performing herds, and ordinary herds. Culled females were also allocated into four groups based on the stages of their reproductive life when culled: unmated gilts, mated gilts, unmated sows, and mated sows. Culling intervals in unmated gilts and mated gilts were defined as the number of days from birth to culling and from first mating to culling, respectively. Culling intervals in unmated sows and mated sows were the number of days from weaning to culling. The number of services was categorized into two groups: first service and reservice groups. Multilevel linear mixed-effects models and survival analysis were performed. Culling intervals (+/-SEM) in unmated gilts, mated gilts, unmated sows, and mated sows were 302.9+/-1.16, 98.4+/-0.92, 14.3+/-0.12, and 89.6+/-0.42 d, respectively. Culling risks in the four groups were 5.6%, 7.1%, 58.0%, and 29.3%, respectively. In unmated gilts, mated gilts, and mated sows, the culling intervals in the high-performing herds were 43.0, 18.9, and 16.0 d shorter than those in ordinary herds, respectively (P<0.05), but no difference was found between the herd groups for the culling interval of unmated sows. For mated sows in the reservice group, culling intervals of high-performing herds were >or=13.7 d shorter than those of the ordinary herds (P<0.05), but for mated sows in the first service group, there was no difference in the culling interval between the herd groups. The culling hazard from 8 wk postweaning for mated sows in high-performing herds increased more rapidly than that in ordinary herds. In conclusion, to reduce culling intervals and improve herd productivity, we recommend implementing a strict culling policy for mated gilts and mated sows, especially reserviced females.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate associations of the number of matings and services with reproductive performance in high-performing and ordinary herds. The data included 113,265 service and 92,248 farrowing records in 117 herds. A service included single or more matings of a female pig (female) during a 10-day estrus period. Two herd groups were built on the basis of the upper 25th percentile of pigs weaned per mated female per year: high-performing (> or = 22.8 pigs) and ordinary herds. Mixed-effects models were used to analyze reproductive performance. Relative frequencies (%) of single, double and triple or more matings were 3.4, 27.4, and 69.2% in high-performing herds, respectively, and were 4.6, 59.3 and 36.1% in ordinary herds, respectively. Percentages of reserviced females in high-performing and ordinary herds were 7.3 and 13.0%, respectively. Triple or more-mated (TM) gilts had 3.5% higher farrowing rates than double-mated (DM) gilts (P<0.01), but similar pigs born alive (PBA) to DM gilts in the first service group in both the herd groups. In the first service group, TM sows had 0.8% higher farrowing rates and 0.2 more PBA than DM sows in high-performing herds (P<0.01). In the reservice group, TM gilts and TM sows had farrowing rate similar to DM gilts and DM sows in high-performing herds. In conclusion, performing triple matings was a better practice for first-serviced females than performing double matings. Double matings may be sufficient for reserviced females.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of increased lactation length (LL) on the reproductive efficiency of sows in herds that were performing differently. The present study used 69,314 parity records for 38,532 sows in 114 herds. Two herd groups, high-performing herds and other herds, were formed on the basis of the upper 25th percentile of pigs weaned per mated female per year. Reproductive efficiency was measured as the estimated number of pigs born alive per farrowed sow per year (PBASY) and was calculated as actual subsequent pigs born alive (PBA) multiplied by estimated litters per farrowed sow per year (LSY) for each farrowed sow. The estimated LSY was calculated as 365 days divided by the actual farrowing interval. Multilevel linear mixed-effects models were used. In our evaluation, an interaction between LL and the herd groups was found for the estimated PBASY (P<0.05). The estimated PBASY of high-performing herds did not decrease as LL increased (P>0.10), although the estimated PBASY of the other herds decreased by 0.04 pigs as LL increased by 1 day (P<0.05). As LL increased from 14 to 28 days, the estimated LSY decreased by 0.19 in the two herd groups (P<0.05). Furthermore, as LL increased by 1 day, subsequent PBA increased by 0.08 pigs in high-performing herds and increased by 0.04 pigs in the other herds (P<0.05). Increased LL may not decrease the performance of sows in high-performing herds, but it may decrease the performance in other herds.

Abstract
High mortality in female pigs on breeding farms is a critical problem in the U.S. swine industry. The objectives of this study were to determine whether female pig mortality on Japanese commercial farms increased; to investigate correlations between the mortality and herd-management factors, especially herd size and lactation length; and to determine herd repeatability in female pig mortality. A five-year annual measurement data between 1999 and 2003 were abstracted from recording files of 113 farms in Japan. The year-effects on measurements were analyzed by using repeated measures data between 1999 and 2003 in mixed-effects linear models. The annual mortalities for female pigs in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 were 4.93%, 5.25%, 5.40%, 5.32%, and 4.85%, respectively. The year-effect on the female pig mortality was not found for the five years. Neither herd size, lactation length nor other management factors were found to be consistently correlated with female pig mortality for the five years. The repeatability of the mortality was 36.5% on commercial farms. In conclusion, female pig mortality did not increase during these five years in Japan. Herd size and lactation length were not risk factors for female pig mortality.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine changes in herd productivity and the performance of female pigs over time in commercial swine herds. Annual measurement data from 1999 to 2003 were obtained from the record files of 113 herds in Japan. Two groups were formed according to the 25th percentile of pigs weaned/mated females per year (PWMFY) in 2003; the 2 groups were high-performing herds (those constituting the top 25%) and the remaining ordinary herds. The effects of group based on PWMFY in 2003, year, and the group x year interaction on repeated measures between 1999 and 2003 were analyzed by using mixed-effects models. A regression analysis was also used to compare key measurements in productivity between the 2 groups, with years as a continuous variable. Variance components were obtained to determine herd repeatability of PWMFY for the 2 herd groups. The average female inventory increased from 290 +/- 31 to 355 +/- 42 females for these 5 yr. The PWMFY also changed from 20.9 +/- 0.21 to 21.2 +/- 0.30 pigs. An interaction between year and group was detected (P < 0.05) for PWMFY. In the regression comparison, high-performing herds increased their PWMFY by 0.31 +/- 0.09 pigs each year, whereas the ordinary herds did not increase. The number of pigs weaned per sow increased by 0.07 +/- 0.02 pigs each year in high-performing herds and increased by 0.03 +/- 0.01 pigs each year in ordinary herds. In high-performing herds, for each year, the percentage of sows mated by 7 d after weaning increased by 0.92 +/- 0.25%, the percentage of reserviced females decreased by 0.63 +/- 0.26%, and culling rate increased by 1.53 +/- 0.50%. Repeatability of PWMFY for high-performing herds and ordinary herds was 28.8 and 54.0%, respectively. This study shows that productivity in high-performing herds was improved compared with that of ordinary herds.

Abstract
Of 105 swine herds using a production record system for breeding female pigs, 95 farms were used to analyze nonproductive female days (NPD), the six component intervals of NPD, and related measurements. The NPD was defined as the days when mated gilts and sows were neither gestating nor lactating, and it was calculated by summing the six component intervals in the average mated female inventory. The mean NPD was 57.9 d (SD = 20.5), and the proportions of six component intervals of gilt first-mating-to-pregnancy interval, gilt first-mating-to-culling interval, unmated weaning-to-culling interval, weaning-to-first-mating interval, sow first-mating-to-pregnancy interval, and sow first-mating-to-culling interval were 9.24, 7.82, 6.85, 27.9, 18.9, and 29.3%, respectively. Farms in the upper 25th percentile of the ranking for number of pigs weaned.mated female(-1).yr(-1) were designated as 25 high-performing farms. The remaining farms were designated as an ordinary farm group for comparisons. High-performing farms had 21.1 d fewer NPD, and five of the six component intervals were lower compared with the ordinary farms (P < 0.05). Regression analyses indicated that the number of litters.mated female(-1).yr(-1) increased by 0.07 in both farm groups as NPD decreased every 10 d. Fewer NPD were correlated with a higher percentage of multiple matings during estrus (P < 0.05) but were not correlated with removal risk and replacement risk in both farm groups. The average parity of culled females was negatively correlated with NPD in the ordinary farm group, and the average farrowed parity was positively correlated with NPD in the high-performing farm group (P < 0.01). Decreasing each component interval of the NPD six components is critical to increasing herd productivity. A high percentage of multiple matings during estrus and appropriate culling management may be key factors to decrease NPD.

Abstract
Annual performance measurements, age structures of female pig inventories, and by-parity culling rates were abstracted from data files of 110 herds that participated in a data-share program in Japan. Parity at culling was used as a prime measurement of longevity, whereas pigs weaned x mated female(-1) x year(-1) (PWMFY) was a prime measurement of reproductive efficiency. High or low longevity herds were based on the greatest 50% of the herds or the remaining herds ranked by parity at culling, whereas high or low reproductive efficiency herds were grouped according to the greatest 50% of the herds or the remaining herds ranked by PWMFY. Measurements were analyzed as a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, using the main effects of the 2 herd groups of longevity (high or low) and reproductive efficiency (high or low). Means of parity at culling and PWMFY were 4.6 (SD = 0.82) and 21.2 (SD = 3.02), respectively. The high longevity group had 1.27 greater parities at culling than the low longevity group (P < 0.05), but no differences between the high and low longevity groups were found in PWMFY (P = 0.21). No differences between the high and low efficiency groups were found in parity at culling (P = 0.50). No interactions between the longevity and efficiency groups were found on any longevity or efficiency measurement (P > 0.20). In herd management, the percentage of reserviced females and the percentage of multiple matings were associated with the longevity group and the efficiency group (P < 0.05). The high longevity group had lower culling rates in parity 0 to 6 than the low longevity group (P < 0.05), whereas no differences between the low and high efficiency groups were found in culling rates in parity 0 to 2 (P > 0.20). This study suggests that measures to achieve longevity and high reproductive efficiency in breeding herds do not conflict and that high reproductive efficiency and high longevity can be achieved.

Abstract
Preweaning mortality risks, recorded death reasons and related factors for preweaning mortality were studied in 105 breeding herds. Preweaning mortality risk at the herd level was calculated as the difference between the number of pigs born alive in farrowed litters and the number of weaned pigs divided by the number of pigs born alive in litters that farrowed and weaned. The mean of annual preweaning mortality risk was 10.7%. In regression analysis, higher mortality risks were associated with higher parity at farrowing, greater numbers of pigs born alive, and longer lactation length. The period from July to September had a higher mortality risk than that from April to June. The means of cause-specific proportional mortality ratios (PMR) in trauma with low viability and scours were 80.4 and 6.2%, respectively. Sows with pig age 0-1 day during lactation had the highest daily PMR. Sows with pig age 0 to 7 days had higher PMR due to trauma and low variability than those with pig age 8 days older. Sows with pig age over 7 days had higher PMR due to scours than those with pig age 0-7 days. Careful management at farrowing and in early lactation on high parity sows with large litters should be considered to prevent piglets from death due to trauma and low viability, and appropriate herd health programs should be implemented for reducing preweaning mortality due to scours during late lactation.

Abstract
This study investigated relationships between herd age structure and herd productivity in breeding herds; it also investigated a pattern in parity proportions of females over 2 years and its relationship with herd productivity in commercial swine herds. This study was based on data from 148 commercial farms in North America stored in the swine database program at the University of Minnesota. The primary selection criterion was fluctuations in breeding-female pig (female) inventories over a 2-year interval. Productivity measurements and parity proportions of females were extracted from the database. A 24-month time-plot in proportions of Parity 0 and Parities 3-5 females (mid-parity) was charted for each farm. Using these charts, a change in proportions of Parity 0 and mid-parity for each farm was categorized into patterns: FLUCTUATE (Parity 0 and mid-parity proportion lines crossed) or STABLE (the two proportion lines never crossed). Higher proportions of mid-parity sows were correlated with greater pigs weaned per female per year (PWFY; P < 0.01). Farms with a FLUCTUATE (73% of the 148 farms) pattern had lower PWFY than those with a STABLE pattern (P < 0.01). The STABLE farms had higher proportions of mid-parity sows, higher parity at culling, higher frequency of gilt deliveries per year, and lower replacement rate than the FLUCTUATE farms (P < 0.01). In conclusion, maintaining stable subpopulations with mid-parity and Parity 0 are recommended to optimize herd productivity.

Abstract
A longitudinal study was carried out in Kikuyu Division (a peri-urban area in central Kenyan highlands) between January 1999 and December 1999 to estimate the baseline parameters on reproductive performance of the sow, as well as health and productivity of grower and preweaning pigs of smallholder herds. Data were collected on 155 breeding pigs, 795 grower pigs and 801 preweaning piglets in 74, 50 and 40 smallholder herds, respectively, using record cards that were updated during monthly visits. The sow-level medians were: weaning-to-service interval 3 months; interfarrowing interval 6.4 months; number of live-born piglets 9.0; and number of piglets weaned per litter 7.5. The piglet crude morbidity incidence risk was 29%. The cause-specific incidence risks for the important health problems encountered in preweaned piglets were diarrhea (4.3%), pruritus (17.1%), and skin necrosis (4.2%). The estimated crude mortality incidence risk to 8 weeks of age was 18.7%. The cause-specific mortality incidence risks to 8 weeks of age for the important causes of mortality were overlying (9.9%), savaging (2.4%), unviable piglets (2.0%) and unknown (1.9%). Overall, 78.8% of the total live-born piglet mortality occurred during the first week postpartum with 69% of these deaths being caused by overlying. The grower-pig crude morbidity incidence risk was 20% and the cause-specific incidence risks of the important health problems encountered were gut edema (1.3%), pruritus (21.1%), and unknown (2.3%). The crude mortality incidence risk was 3.8% and the important causes were gut edema and unknown causes (cause-specific mortality incidence risks of 1.3 and 1.6%, respectively). The median weight:age ratio and average daily weight gain for the grower pigs were 5.1 kg/month of age and 0.13 kg/day, respectively. For preweaning pigs, the median average daily weight gain was 0.13 g/day.

Abstract
The hypotheses that short lactation lengths increase embryo mortality by altering endogenous post-weaning steroid concentrations, and that an exogenous steroid regimen during embryo attachment might increase embryo survival were tested using 36 s parity sows assigned randomly to a 2 x 2 factorial. Sows were subjected to either a short lactation (SL, 13.0 days, n = 25) or a long lactation (LL, 31.5 days, n = 11), artificially inseminated at first estrus and treated daily with 2 ml i.m. of either 25 mg progesterone (P4) and 1.25 pg estradiol-17beta (E2) (steroid treatment, ST, n = 17) or the vehicle alone (control treatment, CT, n = 17) on Days 14-20 post-insemination. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture from weaning to 24 days post-insemination on alternate days. Sows subjected to the SL compared to the LL tended to have a longer weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) (5.3 versus 4.6 days; P < 0. 10), but did not have a significantly reduced conception rate (CR) (71 versus 90%; P > 0.10). The SL and LL sows had a similar ovulation rate (19.9 versus 21.3 corpora lutea, CL; P > 0.05), but SL sows had fewer viable embryos than LL sows (11.5 versus 15.3; P < 0.05) when reproductive tracts were recovered 28-32 days post-insemination. In addition, even after correction for the difference in number of embryos between groups, viable embryos from the SL versus the LL group weighed less (1.63 versus 1.79 g; P < 0.05), had a decreased amnion volume (1.02 versus 1.22 ml; P < 0.05) and apparently produced less estrogens since estrone sulfate concentration was decreased at 24 days post-insemination in SL versus LL sows (4.3 versus 6.3 ng/ml; P < 0.05). Embryo survival (percentage of CL represented by a viable embryo) however, was not different between SL and LL sows (60 versus 74%; P > 0.05) and no differences in post-weaning P4 or E2 concentrations were apparent. Sows that received the ST only tended to have increased P4 concentrations at 16 days post-insemination compared to CT sows and neither the number of viable embryos, nor embryo survival, was increased in ST versus CT sows (14.7 versus 12.2; P > 0.05 and 66 versus 68%; P > 0.05, respectively). These data suggest that short lactations do not increase embryo mortality by inducing aberrant endogenous post-weaning P4 or E2 concentrations. It is unclear whether or not small, repeated doses of exogenous P4 and E2 during attachment can increase embryo survival.

Abstract
A 4000 sow farm in the US using early weaning and a computerized record system was recruited. Farrowed sows were assigned into two experimental treatments: prostaglandin F2alpha injection or control. Sows were assigned by a farm worker to obtain even parity distributions between two groups in each farrowing group. A single i.m. injection of 2 ml of prostaglandin F2alpha between 24 and 48 h after farrowing was administered in the muscle immediately lateral to the vulva. Control sows received no treatment. Of 3562 farrowed sows, 1592 were administered with prostaglandin F2alpha. Parity distributions were not different between control and treatment groups. Parity was categorized into two groups: parity 1-2 or > or = 3. Mean lactation length was 18 days and there was no difference between the control and treatment groups. No main effects of prostaglandin F2alpha administration were found in either parity group on adjusted 21-day litter weight, weaning-to-first-mating interval or weaning-to-conception interval. In parity > or = 3 sows, a two-way interaction between the association of lactation length and treatment with pigs born alive at subsequent farrowing was found (P = 0.044), while no such interaction was found in parity 1-2 sows (P = 0.14). The prediction line for subsequent pigs born alive indicates that prostaglandin F2alpha administration alters the relationship between lactation length and subsequent litter size on mid- or old-parity sows.

Abstract
Of the 825 pig farms in USA that mailed in their electronic file containing production records, 604 farms were used to observe breeding-female mortality risk and related factors (herd size, lactation length, parity and season). Multiple regression was used to determine factors associated with annual mortality risk. Analyses of variance were used for comparisons of mortality risks among parity and season groups. Average annual mortality risks during the 1997 period was 5.68%. Average breeding-female inventories and average lactation length on USA farms were 733 and 18.3 days, respectively. Higher annual breeding-female mortality risk was associated with larger herd size, greater parity at farrowing and shorter lactation length (P<0.02). For example, as herd size increases by 500 females, mortality risk increases by 0.44%. Older parity was associated with higher mortality risks. Summer season was also associated with higher mortality risk. Using five-years' records on 270 farms, annual mortality risk in 1997 was higher than those of 1993 and 1994, while average breeding-female inventory increased and lactation length decreased. It is recommended that producers, especially in large herds, pay more attention to breeding females.

Abstract
Correct classification of the true status of herds is an important component of epidemiologic studies and animal disease-control programs. We review theoretical aspects of herd-level testing through consideration of test performance (herd-level sensitivity, specificity and predictive values), the factors affecting these estimates, and available software for calculations. We present new aspects and considerations concerning the effect of precision and bias in estimation of individual-test performance on herd-test performance and suggest methods (pooled testing, targeted sampling of subpopulations with higher prevalence, and use of combinations of tests) to improve herd-level sensitivity when the expected within-herd prevalence is low.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine productivity characteristics of high-performing swine breeding herds in the United States and to determine associations among number of litters per mated female per year (LMFY), number of pigs weaned per sow (PWS), and lactation duration. DESIGN Cohort study. SAMPLE POPULATION 1997 productivity records for 685 herds. PROCEDURE Herds were ranked on the basis of number of pigs weaned per mated female per year, and herds in the upper 10th percentile of this ranking were designated as high-performing herds. Productivity measurements for these herds were compared with values for the remaining herds. RESULTS High-performing herds had shorter lactation durations and higher mean breeding female inventories than did the remaining herds. High-performing herds also had better reproductive efficiency and used farrowing facilities more efficiently than did the remaining herds. For the high-performing herds, lactation duration was significantly associated with PWS but was not significantly associated with LMFY. In contrast, for the remaining herds, lactation duration was not significantly associated with PWS but was significantly associated with LMFY. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest that high-performing commercial swine farms could increase PWS by improving preweaning mortality rate and number of pigs born alive, but that LMFY was already maximal. For other herds, however, shortening lactation duration would likely decrease farrowing interval and improve efficiency of the reproductive cycle without reducing litter size.

Abstract
Data on sows bred after weaning (n = 9,540) and their lactation feed intake records (average lactation length <20 d) were obtained from 16 commercial farms. Weaning-to-first-mating intervals (WMI) at 6 to 12 d and 0 to 6 d after weaning were defined as the low and high productive periods, respectively. Of the 9,192 sows mated, 80.5 and 19.5% were mated at 0 to 6 d and 7 to 12 d, respectively. In logistic regression analysis, lower parity, shorter lactation length, lower average daily feed intake (ADFI) during lactation, and a greater number of weaned pigs were associated with mating at 7 to 12 d after weaning (P < or = 0.045). Exponentiating the coefficients in logistic regression analysis, the odds ratios were 0.79 for parity, 0.84 for ADFI during lactation, 0.85 for lactation length, and 1.05 for weaned pigs, respectively. A sow with a 14-d lactation length is 2.3 (1/0.85(5)) times as likely to mate within a 6- to 12-d WMI as a sow with a 19-d lactation length. Thus, the early weaned sows are more likely to mate during the low productive period than the later weaned sows. The odds for party 0.79 imply that Parity 1 sows were 1.6 (1/0.79(2)) times as likely to mate within a WMI 6 to 12 d as Parity 3 sows. For each 1-kg increase in ADFI, a mating occurrence during the low productive period decreased by 0.84 times. Sows are mated during the low productive period because this period is a part of the distribution of WMI in a herd. However, our research suggests that increasing feed intake during lactation and maintaining parity proportion appropriate to the herd can decrease the proportion of sows mated during the low productivity period.

Abstract
Sixteen farms having an average lactation length between 14.9 and 18.9 days were selected based upon producers' willingness to keep records of production and lactation feed intake. Data contained 9162 subsequent litter-size records abstracted from computerized production information-system files and lactation feed-intake records. Two-way interactions between the associations of parity and lactation length, and parity and weaning-to-conception interval with subsequent litter size were found in the same statistical model. Subsequent litter size did not increase in parities 1 and 2 as lactation length increased--but subsequent litter size in sows of parities 3-6 increased. In only parity 1, sows with weaning-to-conception interval 6-12 days produced 0.5 fewer pigs at subsequent farrowing than those with weaning-to-conception interval 1-5 days. However, in multiparous sows, no difference in subsequent litter size was found between weaning-to-conception intervals 1-5 and 6-12 days.
