Acetate Activates Lactobacillus Bacteriocin Synthesis by Controlling Quorum Sensing. Appl Environ Microbiol 2021; 87:e0072021. Abstract
Bacteriocins are useful for controlling the composition of microorganisms in fermented food. Bacteriocin synthesis is regulated by quorum sensing mediated by autoinducing peptides. In addition, short-chain fatty acids, especially acetic acid, reportedly regulate bacteriocin synthesis. Five histidine kinases that regulated the synthesis of bacteriocins were selected to verify their interactions with acetate. Acetate activated the kinase activity of PlnB, SppK, and HpK3 in vitro and increased the yield of their cognate bacteriocins plantaricin EF, sakacin A, and rhamnosin B in vivo. The antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus of the fermentation supernatants of Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus sakei, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus with addition of acetate increased to 298%, 198%, and 289%, respectively, compared with that in the absence of acetate. Our study elucidated the activation activity of acetate in bacteriocin synthesis, and it might provide a potential strategy to increase the production of bacteriocin produced by Lactobacillus. IMPORTANCE Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are particularly useful in food preservation and food safety. Bacteriocins might increase bacterial competitive advantage against the indigenous microbiota of the intestines; at the same time, bacteriocins could limit the growth of undesired microorganisms in yogurt and other dairy products. This study confirmed that three kinds of histidine kinases were activated by acetate and upregulated bacteriocin synthesis both in vitro and in vivo. The increasing yield of bacteriocins reduced the number of pathogens and increased the number of probiotics in milk. Bacteriocin synthesis activation by acetate may have a broad application in the preservation of dairy products and forage silage.

Abstract
Enterococcus faecium NKR-5-3 produces multiple-bacteriocins, enterocins NKR-5-3A, B, C, D, and Z (Ent53A, Ent53B, Ent53C, Ent53D, and Ent53Z). However, the biosynthetic mechanisms on how their productions are regulated are yet to be fully understood. In silico analysis revealed putative promoters and terminators in the enterocin NKR-5-3ACDZ gene cluster, and the putative direct repeats (5'-ATTTTAGGATA-3') were conserved upstream of each promoter. Transcriptional analysis by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the biosynthetic genes for the enterocins NKR-5-3 suggested that an inducing peptide (Ent53D) regulates the transcription of the structure genes and corresponding biosynthetic genes of enterocins NKR-5-3, except for Ent53B (a circular bacteriocin), thus consequently regulating their production. Moreover, transcriptional analysis of some knock-out mutants showed that the production of Ent53A, C, D and Z is controlled by a three-component regulatory system (TCS) consisting of Ent53D, EnkR (response regulator), and EnkK (histidine kinase). The production of the circular bacteriocin Ent53B appeared to be independent from this TCS. Nevertheless, disrupting the TCS by deletion of a single component (enkD, enkR and enkK) resulted in a slight increase of enkB transcription and consequently the production of Ent53B, presumably, as an indirect consequence of the increase of available energy to the strain NKR-5-3. Here, we demonstrate the regulatory control of the multiple bacteriocin production of strain NKR-5-3 likely through the TCS consisting of Ent53D, EnkR, and EnkK. The information of the sharing of the regulatory machinery between bacteriocins in strain NKR-5-3 can be useful in its future application such as designing strategies to effectively dispense its multiple bacteriocin arsenal.

Abstract
A total of 332 staphylococcal strains, mainly isolated from meat, were screened for antibacterial activity. Eighteen strains exhibited antibacterial activity towards species within the same genus. These antibacterial strains were further screened against Clostridium botulinum, to assess their potential as anticlostridial starter cultures for the development of fermented meat products without added nitrate or nitrite. Only Staphylococcus sciuri IMDO-S72 had the ability to inhibit all clostridial strains tested, whilst displaying additional activity against Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. Apart from their potential as bioprotective cultures, the staphylococcal collection was also screened for biogenic amine production, as these compounds may compromise food quality. To this end, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was applied. A low incidence of biogenic amine production was found, with tyramine and β-phenylethylamine being the most prevalent ones. Concentrations remained relatively low (< 52 mg/L) after a prolonged incubation period, posing no or little threat towards food safety. Taken together, S. sciuri IMDO-S72 could serve as an interesting candidate for the bioprotection of fermented meats as it showed promising antibacterial activity as well as absence of biogenic amine production.

Abstract
The two‐peptide bacteriocins produced by Gram‐positive bacteria require two different peptides, present in equimolar amounts, to elicit optimal antimicrobial activity. Producer organisms are protected from their bacteriocin by a dedicated immunity protein. The immunity proteins for two‐peptide bacteriocins contain putative transmembrane domains (TMDs) and might therefore be associated with the membrane. The immunity protein CbnZ for the two‐peptide bacteriocin carnobacteriocin XY (CbnXY) was identified by heterologously expressing the cbnZ gene in sensitive host strains. Using protein topology prediction methods and the dual pho‐lac reporter system, we mapped out the membrane topology of CbnZ, along with those of the immunity proteins LagC and LciM for the two‐peptide bacteriocins lactococcin G and lactococcin MN, respectively. Our results reveal wide structural variety between these immunity proteins that can contain as little as one TMD or as many as four TMDs.

Abstract
We have previously shown that the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus brevis 174A, isolated from Citrus iyo fruit, produces a bacteriocin designated brevicin 174A, which is comprised of two antibacterial polypeptides (designated brevicins 174A-β and 174A-γ). We have also found a gene cluster, composed of eight open reading frames (ORFs), that contains genes for the biosynthesis of brevicin 174A, self-resistance to its own bacteriocin, and two transcriptional regulatory proteins. Some lactic acid bacterial strains have a system to start the production of bacteriocin at an adequate stage of growth. Generally, the system consists of a membrane-bound histidine protein kinase (HPK) that senses a specific environmental stimulus and a corresponding response regulator (RR) that mediates the cellular response. We have previously shown that although the HPK- and RR-encoding genes are not found on the brevicin 174A biosynthetic gene cluster in the 174A strain, two putative regulatory genes, designated breD and breG, are in the gene cluster. In the present study, we demonstrate that the expression of brevicin 174A production and self-resistance is positively controlled by two transcriptional regulatory proteins, designated BreD and BreG. BreD is expressed together with BreE as the self-resistance determinant of L. brevis 174A. DNase I footprinting analysis and a promoter assay demonstrated that BreD binds to the breED promoter as a positive autoregulator. The present study also demonstrates that BreG, carrying a transmembrane domain, binds to the common promoter of breB and breC, encoding brevicins 174A-β and 174A-γ, respectively, for positive regulation.IMPORTANCE The problem of the appearance of bacteria that are resistant to practical antibiotics and the increasing demand for safe foods have increased interest in replacing conventional antibiotics with bacteriocin produced by the lactic acid bacteria. This antibacterial substance can inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria without side effects on the human body. The bacteriocin that is produced by a Citrus iyo-derived Lactobacillus brevis strain inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans In general, lactic acid bacterial strains have a system to start the production of bacteriocin at an adequate stage of growth, which is called a quorum-sensing system. The system consists of a membrane-bound histidine protein kinase that senses a specific environmental stimulus and a corresponding response regulator that mediates the cellular response. The present study demonstrates that the expression of the genes encoding bacteriocin biosynthesis and the self-resistance determinant is positively controlled by two transcriptional regulatory proteins.

Abstract
Commensal and beneficial microbes secrete myriad products which target the mammalian host and other microbes. These secreted substances aid in bacterial niche development, and select compounds beneficially modulate the host and promote health. Microbes produce unique compounds which can serve as signaling factors to the host, such as biogenic amine neuromodulators, or quorum-sensing molecules to facilitate inter-bacterial communication. Bacterial metabolites can also participate in functional enhancement of host metabolic capabilities, immunoregulation, and improvement of intestinal barrier function. Secreted products such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, bacteriocins, and bacteriocin-like substances can also target the microbiome. Microbes differ greatly in their metabolic potential and subsequent host effects. As a result, knowledge about microbial metabolites will facilitate selection of next-generation probiotics and therapeutic compounds derived from the mammalian microbiome. In this article we describe prominent examples of microbial metabolites and their effects on microbial communities and the mammalian host.

Abstract
Background Bacteriocin-producing Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have vast applications in human and animal health, as well as in food industry. The structural, immunity, regulatory, export and modification genes are required for effective bacteriocin biosynthesis. Variations in gene sequence, composition and organisation will affect the antimicrobial spectrum of bacteriocin greatly. Lactobacillus plantarum I-UL4 is a novel multiple bacteriocin producer that harbours both plw and plnEF structural genes simultaneous which has not been reported elsewhere. Therefore, molecular characterisation of bacteriocin genes that harboured in L. plantarum I-UL4 was conducted in this study. Results and discussion Under optimised conditions, 8 genes (brnQ1, napA1, plnL, plnD, plnEF, plnI, plnG and plnH) of plnEF locus and 2 genes (plw and plwG) of plw locus were amplified successfully from genomic DNA extracted from L. plantarum I-UL4 using specific primers designed from 24 pln genes selected randomly from reported plw, plS, pln423 and plnEF loci. DNA sequence analysis of the flanking region of the amplified genes revealed the presence of two pln loci, UL4-plw and UL4-plnEF loci, which were chromosomally encoded as shown by Southern hybridisation. UL4-plw locus that contained three ORFs were arranged in one operon and possessed remarkable amino acid sequence of LMG2379-plw locus, suggesting it was highly conserved. Interestingly, the UL4-plnEF locus appeared to be a composite pln locus of JDM1-plnEF and J51-plnEF locus in terms of genetic composition and organisation, whereby twenty complete and one partial open reading frames (ORFs) were aligned and organised successfully into five operons. Furthermore, a mutation was detected in plnF structural gene which has contributed to a longer bacteriocin peptide. Conclusions Plantaricin EF and plantaricin W encoded by plnEF and plnW loci are classified as class I bacteriocin and class II bacteriocin molecules respectively. The concurrent presence of two pln loci encoding bacteriocins from two different classes has contributed greatly to the broad inhibitory spectrum of L. plantarum I-UL4. The new genetic composition and organisation of plnEF locus and concurrent presence of plnEF and plnW loci indicated that L. plantarum I-UL4 is a novel multiple bacteriocin producer that possesses vast potentials in various industries.

Abstract
When cultured in minimal growth medium, the B38 strain of Bacillus subtilis did not exhibit any antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolate. Coculturing B38 strain with viable MRSA cells weakly increased antibacterial activity production (20 AU/ml). Addition of dead MRSA cells in a B38 culture, increased by 8-fold the B. subtilis strain antibacterial activity reaching 160 AU/ml against MRSA strain. This antibacterial activity recovered from cell-free supernatants was stimulated by an autoinducing compound which is sensitive to the action of proteinase K suggesting a proteinaceous nature. This compound was heat-stable till 80 °C and showed a molecular mass around 20 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE. These results suggest that the production of antibacterial compounds by B38 strain is dependent on the amount of the autoinducing compound.

Abstract
An optimization of the production and purification processes of carnobacteriocins Cbn BM1 and Cbn B2 from Carnobacterium maltaromaticum CP5, by heterologous expression in Escherichia coli is described. The genes encoding mature bacteriocin were cloned into an E. coli expression system and expressed as a fusion protein with a thermostable thioredoxin. Recombinant E. coli were cultivated following a fed-batch fermentation process with pH, temperature and oxygenation regulation. The overexpression of the fusion proteins was improved by replacing IPTG by lactose. The fusion proteins were purified by thermal coagulation followed by affinity chromatography. The thioredoxin fusion protein was removed by using CNBr instead of enterokinase and the carnobacteriocins were recovered by reverse-phase chromatography. These optimizations led us to produce up to 320 mg of pure protein per liter of culture, which is four to ten fold higher than what is described for other heterologous expression systems.

Abstract
The production of several bacteriocins in lactic acid bacteria is regulated by inducer peptide pheromones that specifically interact with their cognate bacterial receptor. These peptide pheromones are between 19 and 27 aa long and contain a conserved (V/I)-X-X-X-F sequence followed by positively charged residues in the C-terminal domain. CbaX and EntF are peptide pheromones that share similarity and are involved in the production of carnobacteriocin A in Carnobacterium maltaromaticum LV17A and enterocins A and B in Enterococcus faecium CTC492, respectively. CbaX, EntF and two hybrids, CbaX::EntF and EntF::CbaX, were tested for pheromone activity in LV17A and CTC492. EntF and EntF::CbaX only induced bacteriocin production in CTC492, whereas CbaX and CbaX::EntF induced carnobacteriocin A production in LV17A and, at high concentrations, also cross-induced enterocin production in CTC492. Various peptide fragments of CbaX and EntF were made for further structure-function analysis. The C-terminal fragments, but not the N-terminal fragments, were able to effect bacteriocin induction. The 10-mer EntF(16-25), derived from the C-terminal domain of EntF, showed pheromone activity in LV17A. In contrast, the C-terminal 9-mer of CbaX, CbaX(16-24), inhibited pheromone activity in both LV17A and CTC492. EntF(16-25) and CbaX(16-24) differ by two amino acids. Changing either one of these abolished pheromone activity as well as the ability to inhibit pheromone activity. These results indicate that the C-terminal domain of these peptide pheromones interacts relatively non-specifically with the receptor, and that induction is greatly facilitated by the N-terminal domain that recognizes specifically its cognate receptor.

Abstract
The genus Carnobacterium contains nine species, but only C. divergens and C. maltaromaticum are frequently isolated from natural environments and foods. They are tolerant to freezing/thawing and high pressure and able to grow at low temperatures, anaerobically and with increased CO2 concentrations. They metabolize arginine and various carbohydrates, including chitin, and this may improve their survival in the environment. Carnobacterium divergens and C. maltaromaticum have been extensively studied as protective cultures in order to inhibit growth of Listeria monocytogenes in fish and meat products. Several carnobacterial bacteriocins are known, and parameters that affect their production have been described. Currently, however, no isolates are commercially applied as protective cultures. Carnobacteria can spoil chilled foods, but spoilage activity shows intraspecies and interspecies variation. The responsible spoilage metabolites are not well characterized, but branched alcohols and aldehydes play a partial role. Their production of tyramine in foods is critical for susceptible individuals, but carnobacteria are not otherwise human pathogens. Carnobacterium maltaromaticum can be a fish pathogen, although carnobacteria are also suggested as probiotic cultures for use in aquaculture. Representative genome sequences are not yet available, but would be valuable to answer questions associated with fundamental and applied aspects of this important genus.

Abstract
Streptococcus uberis, a causal agent of bovine mastitis, produces ubericin A, a 5.3-kDa class IIa (pediocin-like) bacteriocin, which was purified and characterized. The uba locus comprises two overlapping genes: ubaA (ubericin A precursor peptide) and ubaI (putative immunity protein). Ubericin A is the first streptococcal class IIa bacteriocin to be characterized.

Abstract
Background Quorum sensing is a form of cell-to-cell communication that allows bacteria to control a wide range of physiological processes in a population density-dependent manner. Production of peptide antibiotics is one of the processes regulated by quorum sensing in several species of Gram-positive bacteria, including strains of Carnobacterium maltaromaticum. This bacterium and its peptide antibiotics are of interest due to their potential applications in food preservation. The molecular bases of the quorum sensing phenomenon controlling peptide antibiotic production in C. maltaromaticum remain poorly understood. The present study was aimed at gaining a deeper insight into the molecular mechanism involved in quorum sensing-mediated regulation of peptide antibiotic (bacteriocin) production by C. maltaromaticum. We report the functional analyses of the CS (autoinducer)-CbnK (histidine protein kinase)-CbnR (response regulator) three-component regulatory system and the three regulated promoters involved in peptide antibiotic production in C. maltaromaticum LV17B. Results CS-CbnK-CbnR system-dependent activation of carnobacterial promoters was demonstrated in both homologous and heterologous hosts using a two-plasmid system with a β-glucuronidase (GusA) reporter read-out. The results of our analyses support a model in which the CbnK-CbnR two-component signal transduction system is necessary and sufficient to transduce the signal of the peptide autoinducer CS into the activation of the promoters that drive the expression of the genes required for production of the carnobacterial peptide antibiotics and the immunity proteins that protect the producer bacterium. Conclusions The CS-CbnK-CbnR triad forms a three-component regulatory system by which production of peptide antibiotics by C. maltaromaticum LV17B is controlled in a population density-dependent (or cell proximity-dependent) manner. This regulatory mechanism would permit the bacterial population to synchronize the production of peptide antibiotics and immunity proteins. Such a population-wide action would afford a substantial peptide antibiotic production burst that could increase the ability of the bacterium to inhibit susceptible bacterial competitors. Finally, our CS-CbnK-CbnR-based two-plasmid expression system represents a suitable genetic tool for undertaking structure-function relationship analyses to map the amino acid residues in the components of the CS-CbnK-CbnR system that are required for biological activity. This plasmid system also has potential as a starting point for developing alternative vectors for controlled gene expression in C. maltaromaticum, Lactococcus lactis, and related lactic acid bacteria.

Abstract
Carnobacterium maltaromaticum UAL26 produces the antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins) piscicolin 126, first isolated from C. maltaromaticum JG126, and carnobacteriocin BM1, first isolated from C. maltaromaticum LV17. C. maltaromaticum UAL26 is especially inhibitory to strains of Listeria monocytogenes. Bacteriocin activity is not observable in the supernatant of cultures of UAL26 grown in liquid media at 25 degrees C, but at temperatures less than 19 degrees C bacteriocin activity can be detected. In contrast to JG126, the piscicolin 126 operon is downregulated in UAL26 at higher temperature, and piscicolin 126 mRNA is not detected when UAL26 is grown at 25 degrees C. Bacteriocin production in UAL26 grown at 15 degrees C can be induced by addition of 10(-10) M of chemically synthesized piscicolin 126 induction peptide (PisN). However, induction of bacteriocin production in UAL26 grown at 25 degrees C requires 10(-7) M of PisN. The sequence of the piscicolin 126 operon in UAL26 contains 34 single nucleotide differences compared with the piscicolin 126 operon in JG126, including single nucleotide differences in the immunity, histidine kinase, dedicated ABC-transporter and accessory genes, as well as a single nucleotide deletion in the transport accessory gene. This deletion causes a frameshift, resulting in truncation of the PisE transport accessory protein in UAL26.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are bacterially produced antimicrobial peptides with narrow or broad host ranges. Many bacteriocins are produced by food-grade lactic acid bacteria, a phenomenon which offers food scientists the possibility of directing or preventing the development of specific bacterial species in food. This can be particularly useful in preservation or food safety applications, but also has implications for the development of desirable flora in fermented food. In this sense, bacteriocins can be used to confer a rudimentary form of innate immunity to foodstuffs, helping processors extend their control over the food flora long after manufacture.

Abstract
Novel effects of naturally occurring peptides are continuing to be discovered, and their mechanisms of actions as well as interactions with other substances, organs, and systems have been elucidated. Synthetic analogs may have actions similar or antagonistic to the endogenous peptides, and both the native peptides and analogs have potential as drugs or drug targets. The journal Peptides publishes many leading articles on the structure-activity relationship of peptides as well as outstanding reviews on some families of peptides. Complementary to the reviews, here we extract information from the original papers published during the past five years in Peptides (1999-2003) to summarize the effects of different classes of peptides, their modulation by other chemicals and various pathophysiological states, and the mechanisms by which the effects are exerted. Special attention is given to peptides related to feeding, pain, and other behaviors. By presenting in condensed form the effects of peptides which are essential for systems biology, we hope that this summary of existing knowledge will encourage additional novel research to be presented in Peptides.

Abstract
Lantibiotics are produced by a variety of Gram-positive bacteria. The production of these peptides appears to be regulated at the transcriptional level in a cell-density-dependent manner in various bacteria. This phenomenon has been studied in detail for the production of nisin by Lactococcus lactis, and the production of the structurally similar subtilin by Bacillus subtilis. In this paper, the molecular mechanism underlying regulation of nisin and subtilin production is reviewed. This quorum sensing, autoregulatory module includes the lantibiotics themselves as peptide pheromones, the signal transduction by the corresponding two-component regulatory systems, and the lantibiotic-responsive promoter elements in the biosynthesis gene clusters. Finally, the exploitation of these regulatory characteristics for the development of highly effective controlled gene expression systems in Gram-positive bacteria is discussed.

Abstract
Plantaricin NC8 (PLNC8), a coculture-inducible two-peptide bacteriocin from Lactobacillus plantarum NC8, has recently been purified and genetically characterized. Analysis of an 8.1-kb NC8 DNA region downstream of the PLNC8 operon revealed the presence of at least four operons involved in bacteriocin production, showing high homology to the plantaricin cluster in L. plantarum C11. However, we found a three-component regulatory operon involving a quorum-sensing mechanism. Two of these components, the induction factor (PLNC8IF) and the histidine kinase, are novel, while the response regulator is identical to PlnD from C11. Homologous expression of plNC8IF in NC8 allowed constitutive bacteriocin production. Heterologous expression of this gene in Lactococcus lactis MG1363 produced supernatants which promoted bacteriocin production in NC8. Reverse transcription-PCR studies indicated that cocultivation of NC8 with inducing cells promoted transcription of the bacteriocin and regulatory operons in NC8. An identical result was obtained after addition of an external source of PLNC8IF. We propose that the presence of specific bacteria could act as an environmental signal that is able to switch on bacteriocin production in L. plantarum NC8 via a quorum-sensing mechanism mediated by PLNC8IF.

Abstract
A new, coculture-inducible two-peptide bacteriocin named plantaricin NC8 (PLNC8) was isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum NC8 cultures which had been induced with Lactococcus lactis MG1363 or Pediococcus pentosaceus FBB63. This bacteriocin consists of two distinct peptides, named alpha and beta, which were separated by C(2)-C(18) reverse-phase chromatography and whose complementary action is necessary for full plantaricin NC8 activity. N-terminal sequencing of both purified peptides showed 28 and 34 amino acids residues for PLNC8 alpha and PLNC8 beta, respectively, which showed no sequence similarity to other known bacteriocins. Mass spectrometry analysis showed molecular masses of 3,587 Da (alpha) and 4,000 Da (beta). The corresponding genes, designated plNC8A and plNC8B, were sequenced, and their nucleotide sequences revealed that both peptides are produced as bacteriocin precursors of 47 and 55 amino acids, respectively, which include N-terminal leader sequences of the double-glycine type. The mature alpha and beta peptides contain 29 and 34 amino acids, respectively. An open reading frame, orfC, which encodes a putative immunity protein was found downstream of plNC8B and overlapping plNC8A. Upstream of the putative -35 region of plNC8B, two direct repeats of 9 bp were identified, which agrees with the consensus sequence and structure of promoters of class II bacteriocin operons whose expression is dependent on an autoinduction mechanism.

Abstract
Quorum sensing enables unicellular organisms to behave in a multicellular way by allowing population-wide synchronized adaptive responses that involve modulation of a wide range of physiological responses in a cell density-, cell proximity- or growth phase-dependent manner. Examples of processes modulated by quorum sensing are the development of genetic competence, conjugative plasmid transfer, sporulation and cell differentiation, biofilm formation, virulence response, production of antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides and toxins, and bioluminescence (for reviews see [38]). The cell-to-cell communication strategies involved in these processes are based on the utilization of small signal molecules produced and released into the environment by the microorganisms. These communication molecules are referred to as pheromones and act as chemical messengers that transmit information across space. The extracellular pheromones accumulate in the environment and trigger a response in the target cells when its concentration reaches a certain threshold value. Elucidation of the chemical nature of the pheromones modulating the processes mentioned above reveals that most of them are unmodified peptides, post-translationally modified peptides, N-acyl homoserine lactones, or butyrolactones. Lactone-based pheromones are the preferred communication signals in Gram-negative bacteria (for review see [47,48]), whereas peptide-based pheromones are the predominant extracellular signals among Gram-positive bacteria (for review see [37,61]). However, lactone-based pheromones are utilized as signals that modulate differentiation and secondary metabolism production in Streptomyces (for review see [20]). This review focuses on the major advances and current views of the peptide-pheromone dependent regulatory circuits involved in production of antimicrobial peptides in Gram-positive bacteria.
