Senior Pet Nutrition and Management

Senior dogs and cats commonly present to veterinary clinics for wellness examinations and for illness. Nutritional needs change in healthy elder pets compared with the young adult life stage. Veterinary health care teams must provide nutritional assessments and individual recommendations, recognizing there is no defined nutrient profile for seniors. Individual variation prevents a one-size-fits-all approach. Advancing age places pets at risk for developing medical conditions. Early detection can lead to earlier nutritional intervention to support recovery, health, and quality of life. However, comorbidities may present a nutritional conundrum, requiring prioritization of problems and nutritional triage to balance needs.

Nutritional care for aging cats and dogs

Veterinarians need to be prepared to provide nutritional advice for healthy pets as well as for pets that are ill. Before instituting a dietary change in any patient, especially an older dog or cat, a nutritional evaluation should be completed. This should include an evaluation of the patient, the current diet, and feeding management. Diets should be appropriate to the unique needs of the individual patient. Many diseases in senior pets are “diet-sensitive” meaning that diet can play a role in managing the effects of the disease. Common examples discussed include cognitive dysfunction of aging, osteoarthritis, and obesity.

Increase levels of apo-A1 and apo B are associated in knee osteoarthritis: lack of association with VEGF-460 T/C and +405 C/G polymorphisms

To investigate the genotype and allele frequency of vascular endothelial growth factor gene polymorphisms in knee osteoarthritis (OA) and their relationship with disease activity and lipid profile, we enrolled 49 knee OA patients and 75 healthy subjects (HS) as a control group. Body mass index (BMI), laboratorial assessment and genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RFLP) were studied in both groups. Disease activity was determined using Lequesne and WOMAC indexes; a P value<0.05 was considered significant. The -460 and +405 VEGF polymorphisms did not shown significant association between OA patients and HS. However, between OA patients and HS a significant differences were observed in BMI, age, apo A-I and apo B, independently of both polymorphisms studied (P<0.05). In conclusion, increased apo A-1 and apo B levels are associated in knee OA, but the -460 T/C and +405 C/G VEGF polymorphisms are not associated with knee OA susceptibility.

Reduction, classification and ranking of motion analysis data: an application to osteoarthritic and normal knee function data

There are certain major obstacles to using motion analysis as an aid to clinical decision making. These include: the difficulty in comprehending large amounts of both corroborating and conflicting information; the subjectivity of data interpretation; the need for visualization; and the quantitative comparison of temporal waveform data. This paper seeks to overcome these obstacles by applying a hybrid approach to the analysis of motion analysis data using principal component analysis (PCA), the Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory of evidence and simplex plots. Specifically, the approach is used to characterise the differences between osteoarthritic (OA) and normal (NL) knee function data and to produce a hierarchy of those variables that are most discriminatory in the classification process. Comparisons of the results obtained with the hybrid approach are made with results from artificial neural network analyses.

Nutrition for Aging Cats and Dogs and the Importance of Body Condition

Before recommending a diet for a senior pet, a thorough nutritional evaluation should be completed. Although many middle-aged and older pets are overweight, a large percentage of geriatric cats and dogs have a low BCS. Approximately one third of cats older than 12 years of age may have a decreased ability to digest fat, whereas one in five may have a compromised ability to digest protein. Thus, appropriate diets for these two age groups may differ considerably. Mature (middle-aged) cats would likely benefit from a lower calorie food, whereas geriatric cats (>12 years of age) may need a highly digestible nutrient-dense diet. More than 40% of dogs between the ages of 5 and 10 years are overweight or obese. Such dogs may benefit from diets with lower fat and calories. Senior dogs also have an increased need for dietary protein, however. Therefore, healthy older dogs may benefit from diets with an increased protein-to-calorie ratio, providing a minimum of 25% of calories from protein. Common obesity-related conditions in dogs or cats include DM and OA. Diabetes differs between dogs and cats. Type I diabetes, common in dogs, seems to respond to fiber-enriched diets, whereas type II diabetes, common in cats, seems to benefit from high-protein and low-carbohydrate diets. OA, an inflammatory condition that occurs in approximately 20% of dogs, may benefit from weight management and nutrients that reduce the inflammatory responses, such as long-chain n-3 fatty acids.
