Abstract
This work presents an in vivo stem-mounted sensor for Nicotiana tabacum plants and an in situ cell suspension sensor for Solanum lycopersicum cells. Stem-mounted sensors are mechanically stable and less sensitive to plant and air movements than the previously demonstrated leaf-mounted sensors. Interdigitated-electrode-arrays with a dual working electrode configuration were used with an auxiliary electrode and an Ag/AgCl quasi-reference electrode. Signal amplification by redox cycling is demonstrated for a plant-based sensor responding to enzyme expression induced by different cues in the plants. Functional biosensing is demonstrated, first for constitutive enzyme expression and later, for heat-shock-induced enzyme expression in plants. In the cell suspension with redox cycling, positive detection of the enzyme β-glucuronidase (GUS) was observed within a few minutes after applying the substrate (pNPG, 4-Nitrophenyl β-D-glucopyranoside), following redox reactions of the product (p-nitrophenol (pNP)). It is assumed that the initial reaction is the irreversible reduction of pNP to p-hydroxylaminophenol. Next, it can be either oxidized to p-nitrosophenol or dehydrated and oxidized to aminophenol. Both last reactions are reversible and can be used for redox cycling. The dual-electrode redox-cycling electrochemical signal was an order of magnitude larger than that of conventional single-working electrode transducers. A simple model for the gain is presented, predicting that an even larger gain is possible for sub-micron electrodes. In summary, this work demonstrates, for the first time, a redox cycling-based in vivo plant sensor, where diffusion-based amplification occurs inside a tobacco plant's tissue. The technique can be applied to other plants as well as to medical and environmental monitoring systems.

Abstract
Abstract
Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with superior structural and functional properties provide an interesting approach to enhance the separation properties of polymer membranes. As a matter of fact, MMMs combine the advantages of both components; polymeric continuous phase and nanoparticle dispersed phase. Generally, the separation performance of polymeric membranes suffers from an upper-performance limit. Hence, the incorporation of nanoparticles helps to overcome such limitations. Block copolymers such as poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA) composed of immiscible soft ether segments as well as hard amide segments have been shown as excellent materials for the synthesis of membranes. Consequently, PEBA membranes have been extensively used in scientific research and industrial processes. It is thus aimed to provide an overview of PEBA MMMs. This review is especially devoted to summarizing the effects of nanoparticle loading on PEBA performance and properties such as selectivity, permeability, thermal and mechanical properties, and others. In addition, the preparation techniques of PEBA MMMs and solvent selection are discussed. This article also discusses the many types of nanoparticles incorporated into PEBA membranes. Furthermore, the future direction in PEBA MMMs research for separation processes is briefly predicted.

Abstract
In membrane reactors, the interaction of reaction and membrane separation can be exploited to achieve a "process intensification", a key objective of sustainable development. In the present work, the properties that the membrane must have to obtain this result in a pervaporation reactor are analyzed and discussed. Then, the methods to enhance these properties are investigated for the photocatalytic synthesis of vanillin, which represents a case where the recovery from the reactor of vanillin by means of pervaporation while it is produced allows a substantial improvement of the yield, since its further oxidation is thus prevented. To this end, the phenomena that control the permeation of both vanillin and the reactant (ferulic acid) are analyzed, since they ultimately affect the performances of the membrane reactor. The results show that diffusion of the aromatic compounds takes place in the presence of low concentration gradients, so that the process is controlled by other phenomena, in particular by the equilibrium with the vapor at the membrane-permeate interface. On this basis, it is demonstrated that the performances are enhanced by increasing the membrane thickness and/or the temperature, whereas the pH begins to limit the process only at values higher than 6.5.

Abstract
The effectiveness of different copolyimide membranes in the process of recovering phenol from water by pervaporation has been investigated. The polyimides were obtained by the polycondensation of 6FDA (4,4'-hexafluoro-isopropylidene diphthalic anhydride) with different diamines. The diamines 4 MPD (2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylene diamine), 6FpDA (4,4'-hexafluoro-isopropylidene dianiline), 6FpODA (4,4'-bis-(4'-aminophenoxyphenyl)-hexafluoropropane), and DABA (3,5-diaminobenzoic acid) as a monomer providing a crosslinkable group, were used. In order to reach chemical stability at high phenol concentrations, the polymer structures were crosslinked with 1,10-decanediol and OFHD (2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluorohexanediol). Pervaporation experiments were performed at 60 degrees C, covering a concentration range of phenol between 2 and 11 wt.%. The best separation characteristics were obtained with a 6FDA-6FpDA/DABA 2:1 membrane crosslinked with 1,10-decanediol. Using a 7.8 wt.% phenol feed mixture, a total flux of 14 kg microns m-2 h-1 was reached with an enrichment of 40 wt.% phenol in the permeate. It was found that conditioning the membrane using high phenol concentrations (between 8 and 11 wt.%) is a necessary pretreatment in order to enhance the flux and improve enrichment, especially if process water with low phenol concentrations is to be treated. In addition to the experimental results, a comparison with rubbery membrane materials is presented in the discussion.
