Abstract
In this paper, an Hg2+ detection probe, HOS, was prepared with a xanthene as the parent fluorophore. Hg2+-initiated thioacetal deprotection reaction is the detection mechanism of this probe. After testing, the probe HOS was able to accurately determine Hg2+ with a detection limit of 36 nM. It was successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ in different water samples and shrimp samples, meanwhile, the filter paper strips prepared by HOS were obviously changed from light yellow to dark yellow under daylight, and from green to yellow under 365 nm UV light. Furthermore, probe HOS enabled Hg2+ bioimaging experiments on HepG2 cells, zebrafish and tobacco seedlings under laser confocal microscopy.

Abstract
Infection by positive-strand RNA viruses induces extensive remodeling of the host endomembrane system in favor of viral replication and movement. The integral membrane protein 6K2 of potyviruses induces the formation of membranous virus replication vesicles at the endoplasmic reticulum exit site (ERES). The intracellular trafficking of 6K2-induced vesicles along with microfilaments requires the vesicular transport pathway, actomyosin motility system, and possibly post-Golgi compartments such as endosomes as well. Recent studies have shown that endocytosis is essential for the intracellular movement of potyviruses from the site of viral genome replication/assembly site to plasmodesmata (PD) to enter neighboring cells. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol of how to use endomembrane trafficking pathway-specific chemical inhibitors and organelle-selective fluorescence dye to study the trafficking of potyviral proteins and potyvirus-induced vesicles and to unravel the role of endocytosis and the endocytic pathway in potyvirus infection in Nicotiana benthamiana plants.

Abstract
The main objective of this systematic review was to assess cancer risk, and mortality after cancer diagnosis, for exclusive users of Swedish snus, compared with non-users of tobacco. We followed international standards for systematic reviews and graded our confidence in the risk estimates using the GRADE approach. Our search gave 2450 articles, of which 67 were assessed in full text against our inclusion criteria. Of these, 14 cohort-studies and one case-control study were included in the review. The studies investigated risk of cancer in the oral cavity or oropharynx (3 studies), esophagus (1 study), stomach (1 study), pancreas (2 studies), colorectum (2 studies), anus (1 study) and lung (1 study), as well as malignant lymphoma (1 study), leukemia and multiple myeloma (1 study), melanoma (1 study), any cancer (1 study) and mortality after cancer diagnosis (4 studies). Cancer risk could only be evaluated in men as there was a general lack of data for women. All included studies were evaluated to have a moderate risk of bias, mostly related to validity of exposure information. An increased risk of cancer of the esophagus, pancreas, stomach and rectum as well as an association between use of snus and increased mortality after a cancer diagnosis was reported. Our confidence in the various risk estimates varied from moderate through low to very low.

Abstract
Objectives and importance of the study: The study investigates and documents how tobacco companies are using the revolving door between government and industry as a tactic to try to influence public health policymaking in Australia. This is the first Australian study to systematically investigate the revolving door tactic in tobacco lobbying and highlights the importance of strengthening integrity and transparency legislation and oversight bodies to eliminate the political influence of tobacco companies in Australia. STUDY TYPE Mixed-methods including non-experimental descriptive and exploratory case studies. METHODS To build a picture of tobacco lobbying through the revolving door in Australia, data was triangulated from multiple publicly available sources: 1) Australian federal, state and territory government lobbyist registers, 2) the online social networking platform, LinkedIn; and 3) Australian news media reports. RESULTS Tobacco companies lobby the Australian government using 'in-house' employees, lobbyists working in firms acting on their behalf, and third-party allies with common interests. Almost half (48%) of internal tobacco company lobbyists had held positions in the Australian government (state, territory and/or federal) before or after working in the tobacco industry. Likewise, 55% of lobbyists acting on behalf of tobacco companies had held government positions before or after working as a lobbyist. In-house tobacco industry lobbyists, as well as those working on behalf of tobacco companies within lobbying firms, were found to have held senior governmental positions, such as a Member of Parliament (MP) or Senator, chief or deputy chief of staff, or senior advisor in a ministerial office, and many had moved into or out of government within 1 year of working for a tobacco company (56%) or as a lobbyist (48%). CONCLUSIONS Tobacco companies are strategically using the revolving door between the government and the tobacco industry as a key political lobbying mechanism to try to influence public health policy in Australia.

Abstract
Sulfidic mine wastes have the potential to generate acid mine drainage (AMD) and release acid leachates containing high levels of iron, sulfate and potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Soils receiving AMD discharges are generally devoid of vegetation. Only a few metal-tolerant plant species can survive under such adverse soil conditions. This work investigates two plant species, Nicotiana glauca and Euphorbia segetalis, that have successfully colonized an AMD-impacted wetland area in south-western Spain. The uptake of PTEs from the soil by roots and their transfer and accumulation in the above-ground biomass were quantified. Results showed that these pioneer plants grew in patches of neutral soil within the wasteland despite the high concentrations of PTEs in the rhizosphere soil (up to: 613 mg kg-1 As, 18.7 mg kg-1 Cd, 6370 mg kg-1 Cu, 2210 mg kg-1 Pb and 5250 mg kg-1 Zn). The target organs of As, Cu and Pb accumulation were: root > leaf > stem in N. glauca, and root > stem > leaf in E. segetalis. Zinc and Cd showed a significant decrease in roots relative to aerial parts of N. glauca, and Co was preferentially partitioned in stems of N. glauca and leaves of E. segetalis. The soil-plant transfer coefficient values of PTEs in all parts of both plants were well below unity with the only exception of Cd in leaves of N. glauca (1.254), suggesting that roots acted as a barrier limiting the uptake of PTEs by plants. Interestingly, under the same soil conditions, N. glauca absorbed Cd in considerable proportions from soil and accumulated it in its leaves, while E. segetalis was not effective in transferring PTEs from roots shoots except for Co. In conclusion, soil pH and plant-related factors greatly influence the stabilization of PTE in the rhizospheric soil and produce inconsistencies in PTE phytoavailability. The findings of this study provide criteria to assist in natural remediation in other legacy contaminated sites worldwide.

Abstract
Co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) and tobacco stalk (TS) was conducted, where TS are rich in inorganic elements. The effects of the mixing ratio and pyrolysis temperature on pyrolysis products were investigated through the tube furnace system. The components of gas and tar were determined. In addition, the N/S ratio, pore distribution characteristics, surface functional group characteristics, aromatisation characteristics and inorganic element content of char were studied. Results show that the addition of TS to SS has a significant synergistic effect. Particularly, when the ratio of SS to TS is 1:3, the pyrolysis gas yield is the largest. The inorganic elements with a catalytic effect can promote the conversion of char and tar into pyrolysis gas. However, with the increase in pyrolysis temperature, the synergistic effect will gradually weaken. The increase in pyrolysis temperature will promote the development of mesopores in char but will reduce the order degree of the char structure. The addition of TS in SS will further increase the number of mesopores in char, and the obtained char carbon structure is more ordered. When the pyrolysis temperature is 600 °C, the tar yield is the highest, and the higher the mixing ratio of SS, the better the formation of polyaromatic compounds and aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract
The genus Potyvirus is considered as the largest among plant single-stranded (positive-sense) RNA viruses, causing considerable economic damage to vegetable and fruit crops worldwide. Through the coordinated action of four viral proteins and a few identified host factors, potyviruses exploit the endomembrane system of infected cells for their replication and for their intra- and intercellular movement to and through plasmodesmata (PDs). Although a significant amount of data concerning potyvirus movement has been published, no synthetic review compiling and integrating all information relevant to our current understanding of potyvirus transport is available. In this review, we highlight the complexity of potyvirus movement pathways and present three potential nonexclusive mechanisms based on (1) the use of the host endomembrane system to produce membranous replication vesicles that are targeted to PDs and move from cell to cell, (2) the movement of extracellular viral vesicles in the apoplasm, and (3) the transport of virion particles or ribonucleoprotein complexes through PDs. We also present and discuss experimental data supporting these different models as well as the aspects that still remain mostly speculative.

Abstract
This research comprehensively investigates the co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) and waste tobacco stem (WTS). Various SS and WTS ratios (1:0, 0.75:0.25, 0.50:0.50, 0.25:0.75, and 0:1) were tested over a range of heating rates (30 °C to 800 °C). Apparent activation energies were calculated using model-free methods, and the co-pyrolysis mechanism was described with the master plot method. Results suggest that SS and WTS co-pyrolysis follows power-law models (P3, P4). Among blends, S75W25 exhibited optimal synergy, with the lowest activation energy required for the pyrolysis reactions and inhibits CO2 emissions. S75W25's pyrolysis gas primarily contained acids (e.g., ethylxanthogenacetic acid, acetic acid), hydrocarbons (e.g., supraene, cyclopropyl carbinol), and other compounds (e.g., CO2, pyrazine, pyridine, indole). ANN was utilized to forecast the temperature-mass loss relationships in co-pyrolysis, with the optimal model being ANN21, yielding a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99999). This study offers guidance for the efficient utilization of waste SS and WTS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The utilization of non-metallic inorganic nanomaterials for antimicrobial photocatalytic technology has emerged as a promising approach to combat drug-resistant bacteria. Recently, g-C3 N4 nanosheets have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional stability, degradability, low cost, and remarkable antibacterial properties. In this study, a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach was utilized to functionalize ZnO nanoparticles with g-C3 N4 nanosheets, resulting in the formation of g-C3 N4 @ZnO nanoparticle composites. RESULTS The Z-shaped heterojunction architecture of these composites facilitates efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhances visible light catalytic performance. Moreover, the formation of the g-C3 N4 @ZnO heterostructure showed a higher photocatalytic capacity and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) than g-C3 N4 nanosheets. The photocatalytic antibacterial mechanisms of g-C3 N4 @ZnO at the transcriptomic level primarily involve disrupting bacterial membrane synthesis and inhibiting motility and energy metabolism. Therefore, the antibacterial mechanism of g-C3 N4 @ZnO can be attributed to a combination of physical membrane damage, chemical damage (ROS enhancement) and inhibition of chemotaxis, biofilm formation and flagellar motility. CONCLUSION These findings collectively provide novel high potential and insights into the practical application of photocatalysts in plant disease management. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
PURPOSE Assessing the mortality rates associated with tobacco-related oral cancer (OC) is crucial for effective allocation of resources within healthcare and economic systems. METHODS In this study, data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 were utilized to analyze the burden of tobacco-attributable OC in China, the United States (US), and India from 1990 to 2019. Descriptive statistics and an age-period-cohort model were employed to examine and compare the effects on OC mortality. RESULTS 1. Attributable to tobacco, the deaths remained stable in the US, but increased in China and India. The trend of age-standardized mortality rate of OC increased in China, and decreased in the US and India, whereas the rate in India was the highest. 2. According to the APC model, the risk of death increased with age in all three countries. The period and later birth cohort effects were identified as risk factors in China and India, while in the US, the previous cohorts were identified as a risk factor. Except for India, males faced higher death risk than females in China and the US. CONCLUSIONS The burden of OC attributable to tobacco remains substantial in China and India. Public health officials in these countries should implement prevention and treatment strategies for OC, and interventions aimed at regulating the tobacco industry. The elderly is at an elevated risk for OC, and medical resources and policies should be directed toward this population. The successes experience in tobacco control and OC prevention in the US may serve as a model for other countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is now understood that ferroptosis plays a significant role in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE). However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain largely unclear. METHODS In this study, we established a COPD mouse model through exposure to cigarette smoke particulates, followed by H&E staining, analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and immunohistochemistry assay. A549 cells were exposed to increasing concentrations of CSE, with the addition of the ferroptosis activator erastin or the inhibitor Fer-1. Cell viability, LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) release, inflammatory cytokines, total ROS (reactive oxygen species), and lipid ROS were measured using the corresponding assay kits. The acetylation level of GNPAT was determined through immunoprecipitation. We assessed the expression levels of molecules involved in plasmalogen biosynthesis (FAR1, AGPS, and GNPAT), GPX4, and SIRT4 using quantitative real-time PCR, western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS CSE-induced lung tissue damage was initially observed, accompanied by oxidative stress, ferroptosis, and increased plasmalogen biosynthesis molecules (FAR1, AGPS, and GNPAT). CSE also induced ferroptosis in A549 cells, resulting in reduced cell viability, GSH, and GPX4 levels, along with increased LDH, ROS, MDA (malondialdehyde) levels, oxidized lipids, and elevated FAR1, AGPS, and GNPAT expression. Knockdown of GNPAT mitigated CSE-induced ferroptosis. Furthermore, we found that CSE regulated the acetylation and protein levels of GNPAT by modulating SIRT4 expression. Importantly, the overexpression of GNPAT countered the inhibitory effects of SIRT4 on ferroptosis. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed GNPAT could be deacetylated by SIRT4, providing novel insights into the mechanisms underlying the relationship between CSE-induced ferroptosis and COPD.

Abstract
Curiosity promotes learning. Two open questions concern the extent to which tobacco smokers exhibit curiosity about smoking-related health information and whether this curiosity can facilitate recall of this information. Participants (n = 324 smokers; n = 280 nonsmokers) performed a Trivia Guessing Task wherein participants guessed the answers to general trivia and smoking-related trivia questions and provided ratings of their curiosity prior to viewing the answers to the questions. A subset of participants (n = 121 smokers; n = 97 nonsmokers) completed a surprise Trivia Memory Task one-week later and answered the previously-viewed questions. Results indicate that smokers are no less curious about smoking-related trivia than they are about general trivia and that curiosity about the answer to smoking-related trivia is associated with more accurate recall of smoking-related trivia answers one week later. Findings suggest that engendering states of curiosity for smoking-related information may facilitate retention of that information in smokers.

Abstract
Tobacco 21 (T-21) laws raise the minimum legal purchasing age for all tobacco products to 21. This study is the first to examine the impact of statewide T21 laws on teenage and young adult cigarette and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use. Using survey data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and a difference-in-differences approach, we find that statewide adoption of a T-21 law is associated with a 2-to-4 percentage-point decline in smoking participation among 18-to-20-year-olds. Supplemental analyses using the State Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) show that frequent e-cigarette use among 18-year-olds also fell following the adoption of T21 laws, though this effect was partially because teens turned to informal social sources to obtain e-cigarettes (i.e., borrowing or bumming). Finally, we find that T-21 laws generate spillover effects, including (2) reductions in cigarette use among 16-to-17-year-olds, a group that relies heavily on informal social markets in high school, and (2) reductions in marijuana use and days of alcohol use among some teens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ghrelin is physiologically important for maintaining sleep rhythm. Cigarette smoking has been demonstrated to significantly increase the risk of insufficient sleep by regulating ghrelin at the central and peripheral levels. No research has been published to study the relationship between active smoking and sleep via ghrelin level in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). METHODS A total of 139 Chinese males were recruited and divided into active smokers (n = 77) and non-smokers (n = 62). The levels of CSF and plasma ghrelin were measured. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep. RESULTS Non-smokers had lower PSQI scores (1.71 ± 1.93) than active smokers (3.70 ± 1.78). Non-smokers have significantly lower plasma ghrelin levels and lower plasma/CSF ghrelin ratio but higher CSF ghrelin than active smokers. Among non-smokers, plasma ghrelin levels were not correlated with PSQI scores (all p > 0.05), CSF ghrelin levels were positively correlated with PSQI scores (r = 0.309, p = 0.019), and the plasma/CSF ghrelin ratio was negatively correlated with PSQI scores (r = -0.346, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to reveal the relationship between cigarette smoking, high CSF ghrelin levels and insufficient sleep, suggesting that maintaining a normal plasma/CSF ghrelin ratio may be the physiological mechanism of healthy sleep, and the insufficient sleep population must quit smoking.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although many countries have banned tobacco advertising on traditional media platforms, the tobacco industry actively promotes their products via online channels. Adolescents are at high risk of exposure due to spending substantial time online. We examined the prevalence of adolescent exposure to online tobacco advertisements and promotions. METHODS We analyzed data from the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys (GYTS; 2013-2018; average response rate = 76.8%). We included 15 countries in four regions that measured self-reported exposure to tobacco advertising on the internet in the past month (N = 111,356, adolescents aged 11-18): Region of the Americas (Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru), African (Mauritius, Zimbabwe), European (Czech Republic, Turkey), and the Western Pacific (Micronesia, Macao, Papua New Guinea, Samoa). We calculated the prevalence of online exposure to tobacco advertising by past-month cigarette use. RESULTS Prevalence of adolescent exposure to online advertisements for tobacco products ranged from 18.2%-34.3% and 12.3%-34.4% for tobacco advertisements that "looked fun or cool". Exposure to online tobacco product advertisements was prevalent across countries, including those with advertising bans in place, and included adolescents who have never smoked (14.4%-28.4% exposed to any, 9.1%-31.0% exposed to fun or cool advertisements). Reporting seeing tobacco advertising online that looked fun or cool was positively associated with the prevalence of past-month smoking (r = 0.64, p = .010). DISCUSSION A substantial proportion of adolescents in countries that have banned tobacco advertising are still exposed to advertisements for tobacco products online. Internet tobacco advertising needs better enforcement to prevent adolescent tobacco use and uptake worldwide.

Abstract
AIMS E-cigarette and tobacco-related content on social media continues to rise from lax restrictions on both personal and promotional posts. This content has been linked to various mechanisms of increased e-cigarette and tobacco use (i.e., lower risk perceptions and increased susceptibility). This study aimed to synthesis the association between exposure to e-cigarette and tobacco-related content and youth behaviours and attitudes. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science. Studies published post-2004 reporting effect estimates for exposure or engagement with e-cigarette or tobacco content on social media and behaviour or attitude outcomes were included. RESULTS Thirty-two studies (N = 274,283, aged 9 to 25 years) were included for synthesis. Meta-analyses revealed significant associations between engagement with tobacco content and use (OR 2.21; 95% CI = 1.27-3.82, p =.005; I2 = 96.4%), exposure to tobacco content and never users' lower risk perceptions (OR 0.68; 95% CI = 0.49-0.91; p =.011; I2 = 78.2%), and exposure to e-cigarette content and use (OR 1.37; 95% CI = 0.99-1.88; p = 0.058; I2 = 64.4%). There was no observed relationship between exposure to tobacco content and ever users' risk perceptions (OR 0.83; 95% CI = 0.61-1.13; p =.231; I2 = 83.5%). Qualitative synthesis found significant associations between tobacco exposure and increased current use and pro-tobacco attitudes; e-cigarette exposure and increased susceptibility and lower risk perceptions; tobacco engagement and increased susceptibility; e-cigarette engagement and increased use; dual exposure and increased susceptibility; and dual engagement and increased dual use. Mixed findings were identified for the influence of e-cigarette exposure on attitudes, tobacco exposure on susceptibility, dual exposure on dual use behaviours, and dual engagement on dual susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest an association between exposure and engagement to e-cigarette or tobacco products on social media and use or pro-use attitudes among youth. Further substantive research in the area of youth-specific use and attitudes following exposure and engagement with e-cigarette and tobacco content is needed to quantify this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite evidence of racialized and socioeconomic inequities in tobacco and alcohol outlet availability, few studies have investigated spatial inequities in areas experiencing both concentrated residential racialized segregation and socioeconomic disadvantage. This study examined whether segregation-racialized, economic or both-was associated with alcohol and tobacco retailer counts in North Carolina (NC). METHODS The NC Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission provided lists of 2021 off-premise alcohol retailers. We created a list of 2018 probable tobacco retailers using ReferenceUSA. We calculated three census tract-level measures of the Index of Concentrations at the Extremes (ICE), indicating racialized segregation between non-Hispanic White and Black residents and economic segregation based on household income. We used negative binomial regression to test associations between quintiles of each ICE measure and tobacco and, separately, alcohol retailer counts. RESULTS Tracts with the greatest racialized disadvantage had 38% (IRR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.15-1.66) and 65% (IRR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.34-2.04) more tobacco and alcohol outlets, respectively, as tracts with the lowest. Tracts with the highest racialized economic disadvantage had a predicted count of 1.51 tobacco outlets per 1000 people while those in the lowest had nearly one fewer predicted outlet. Similar inequities existed in the predicted count of alcohol outlets. DISCUSSION Tobacco and alcohol outlet availability are higher in NC places experiencing concentrated racialized and economic segregation. A centralized agency overseeing tobacco and alcohol outlet permits and strategies to reduce the retail availability of these harmful products (e.g., capping the number of permits) are needed to intervene upon these inequities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study tested the effectiveness of a culturally specific tobacco cessation video intervention among African American quitline enrollees. STUDY DESIGN This was a 3-arm semipragmatic RCT. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS African American adults (N=1,053) were recruited from the North Carolina tobacco quitline and data were collected between 2017 and 2020. INTERVENTION Participants were randomized to receive (1) quitline services only; (2) quitline services plus a standard, general audience video intervention; or (3) quitline services plus Pathways to Freedom (PTF), a culturally specific video intervention designed to promote cessation among African American persons. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcome was self-reported 7-day point prevalence smoking abstinence at 6 months. Secondary outcomes included 7-day and 24-hour point prevalence abstinence at 3 months, 28-day continuous abstinence, and intervention engagement. Data analyses occurred in 2020 and 2022. RESULTS At 6 months, 7-day point prevalence abstinence was significantly greater in the Pathways to Freedom Video arm compared with quitline-only (OR=1.5, CI=1.11, 2.07). Twenty four-hour point prevalence abstinence was significantly greater in the Pathways to Freedom (than in quitline-only) group at 3 (OR=1.49, 95% CI=1.03, 2.15) and 6 (OR=1.58, 95% CI=1.10, 2.28) months. At 6 months, 28-day continuous abstinence (OR=1.60, 95% CI=1.17, 2.20) was significantly greater in the Pathways to Freedom Video arm than in the quitline-only arm. Views of the Pathways to Freedom Video were 76% higher than views of the standard video. CONCLUSIONS Culturally specific tobacco interventions delivered through state quitlines can increase cessation and thus have the potential to decrease health disparities among African American adults. Abstract
Nicotine (NIC) is a harmful substance, drug, pesticide and chemical that is widely found in tobacco. It has carcinogenic, teratogenic and neurotoxic effects that have raised serious concerns. Herein, a colorimetric sensor with dual-ratio and dual-mode for the detection of NIC in tobacco samples was reported. The localized surface plasmon resonance signals of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and AuNPs-NIC are used as dual-ratio signals. The absorbance ratio of NIC to AuNPs or the absorbance ratio of NIC to AuNPs-NIC and the wavelength shift value of AuNPs-NIC are applied as dual-mode. Transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry, and potentiostatic methods were used to characterize the sensor. Further analysis of NIC was conducted through morphological fitting and theoretical calculations. Under optimal conditions, the sensor shows a wide linear range of 5-500 μM. The detection limits for NIC are 2.48 μM, 1.63 μM and 1.34 μM, respectively. The experimental result shows that the dual-ratio signal of AuNPs and AuNPs-NIC has good selectivity and sensitivity, and can effectively reduce the interference of impurities on NIC detection. And the dual-mode of detection for NIC improves the accuracy and comparability of the result significantly. In addition, the proposed sensor was also applied to test NIC in tobacco samples with satisfactory recovery.

Abstract
Introduction Increasing quitting among people who smoke cigarettes is the quickest approach to reducing tobacco-related disease and death. Methods We analyzed data from the 2018-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey for 137,471 adult self-respondents from all 50 US states and the District of Columbia to estimate state-specific prevalence of current tobacco product use, interest in quitting smoking, past-year quit attempts, recent successful cessation (past-year quit lasting ≥6 months), receipt of advice to quit smoking from a medical doctor, and use of cessation medications and/or counseling to quit. Results Prevalence of current any-tobacco use (use every day or some days) ranged from 10.2% in California to 29.0% in West Virginia. The percentage of adults who currently smoked cigarettes and were interested in quitting ranged from 68.2% in Alabama to 87.5% in Connecticut; made a past-year quit attempt ranged from 44.1% in Tennessee to 62.8% in Rhode Island; reported recent successful cessation ranged from 4.6% in West Virginia and Wisconsin to 10.8% in South Dakota; received advice to quit from a medical doctor ranged from 63.3% in Colorado to 86.9% in Rhode Island; and used medications and/or counseling to quit ranged from 25.5% in Nevada to 50.1% in Massachusetts. Several states with the highest cigarette smoking prevalence reported the lowest prevalence of interest in quitting, quit attempts, receipt of advice to quit, and use of counseling and/or medication, and the highest prevalence of e-cigarette, smokeless tobacco, and cigar use. Conclusion Adults who smoke struggle with smoking cessation and could benefit from additional intervention.

Abstract
The rapid and accurate determination of triadimenol residues is of great significance. In this study, based on the advantages of high efficiency, rapidity, reliability, simplicity and low cost of immunology, a test strip product for the rapid detection of triadimenol residues in tobacco was designed based on the optimization of conditions such as pH and dosage of diluent, concentration of antibody stock solution, type of confining solution and complex solution, with high specificity, accuracy and The results of 20 samples of fresh and first roasted tobacco were all consistent with the method of gas chromatography, which proved the reliability of the test strips. The detection limit for fresh and roasted tobacco was 5 mg/kg, and the test strips developed in this study are suitable for mass testing of tobacco samples in tobacco-related laboratories because of their short detection time, simple pre-treatment and detection methods, and good application prospects.

Abstract
In this study, the establishment of a colloidal gold immunochromatographic method for the detection of cypermethrin in tobacco was achieved by using colloidal gold immunochromatography: strong specificity and high sensitivity of cypermethrin semi-antigens and encapsulants were prepared during the study. The best colloidal gold solution was prepared by spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscope screening; the preparation process of gold-labeled antibodies was optimized, and finally the product of colloidal gold rapid detection test strips for cypermethrin was developed. The results of technical parameters and detection indexes showed that the detection limit of cypermethrin in tobacco was 1 mg/kg, and there was no cross-reaction with bifenthrin, cypermethrin, cyfluthrin and phenothrin, and the detection results of 30 tobacco samples were consistent with those of gas chromatography.

Abstract
In this study, monoclonal antibodies against oxamyl were prepared, and colloidal gold immunochromatography was used to design a rapid test strip product for the detection of oxamyl in tobacco with high specificity, accuracy and stability without cross-reactivity to commonly used tobacco fungicides based on the optimization of conditions such as pH value of diluent, diluent dosage, concentration of antibody marker, type of confining solution and complex solution. 5 The results of five samples of post-harvest ready-to-bake tobacco and first-harvest tobacco were consistent with the gas chromatographic method, which proved the reliability of the test strips. The limits of detection for the post-harvest and first-harvest tobacco samples were 0.1 mg/kg, and the test strips developed in this study are suitable for mass testing in tobacco laboratories with good application prospects because of their short detection time, simple pre-treatment and detection methods.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tobacco harm reduction (THR) discourse has been divisive for the tobacco control community, partially because it sometimes aligns public health and tobacco industry interests. Industry funding is contentious as it influences study outcomes, and is not always disclosed in scientific publications. This study examines the role of disclosed and undisclosed industry support on THR publications via social network analysis. METHODS We reviewed 826 English-language manuscripts (1992-2016) to determine disclosed and undisclosed industry (pharmaceutical, tobacco, and e-cigarette) and non-industry (including government) support received by 1405 authors. We used social network analysis to identify the most influential authors in THR discourse by assessing the number of their collaborators on publications, the frequency of connecting other authors in the network, and tendency to form groups based on the presence of sponsorship disclosures, sources of funding, and THR stance. RESULTS About 284 (20%) out of 1405 authors were supported by industry. Industry-sponsored authors were more central and influential in the network: with twice as many publications (Median = 4), 1.25 as many collaborators on publications (Median = 5), and higher likelihood of connecting other authors and thus having more influence in the network, compared to non-industry-sponsored authors. E-cigarette industry-sponsored authors had the strongest association with undisclosed industry support. CONCLUSIONS Authors with industry support exerted a stronger influence on the THR scientific discourse than non-industry-supported authors. Journals should continue adhering to strict policies requiring conflicts of interest disclosures. An increase in public health spending on tobacco control research may be necessary to achieve funding parity.

Abstract
Philip Morris International's recent purchase of Swedish Match may prove to be a vital tobacco industry development. We focus on PMIs potential progress in moving from primarily selling cigarettes toward primarily selling noncombustible nicotine delivery products (NCNDPs). We also consider the potential contribution of the acquisition to industry transformation whereby other cigarette firms may potentially move toward primarily selling NCNDPs. We examine the potential impact on noncombustible nicotine delivery product use, including nicotine pouches (a major Swedish Match product), e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and, most importantly, on sales of the industry's staple, combustible cigarettes. We focus on the United States as a special case, where PMI is limited from entering the cigarette market. Implications: Philip Morris International's purchase of Swedish Match and policies regarding nicotine pouches (NPs) have been overlooked in the tobacco control literature. The acquisition indicates the importance of the NP market to the largest nonstate-owned tobacco company. The acquisition has the potential through pricing and marketing tactics to either encourage or discourage the use of NPs, e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and most importantly cigarettes. Due to its inability to sell cigarettes in the United States, PMI will have incentives to use its alternative nicotine delivery products, including its newly acquired NPs, to reduce the sale of cigarettes by other companies. However, the potential effects in other countries, where PMI does sell cigarettes, are less clear. Monitoring and analyzing tobacco company acquisitions is essential to studying future transitions in using different kinds of tobacco products, especially from cigarettes to lower-risk alternative nicotine delivery products.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We found no comprehensive studies on the location of transnational tobacco and leaf company (TTLC) subsidiaries (business entities they control) or the consequences of their presence on health policy. AIMS AND METHODS Here we assess (1) the global reach of TTLCs by mapping their tobacco growing and manufacturing subsidiaries and (2) the relationship between in-country presence of the tobacco industry and their power and interference. Data on subsidiaries were collated through systematic searching for countries' supply chain activities in documents and web pages. Cross-sectional multiple regression analysis was used to assess the association between the number of agricultural and manufacturing TTLCs and the Tobacco Industry Interference score, and the degree to which these were mediated by tobacco control, good governance, and economic importance of tobacco. RESULTS TTLC supply chain activity had global reach. As the number of TTLCs with tobacco growing and manufacturing activities rose, interference increased significantly. Interference was associated with poorer tobacco control. The association with more TTLCs undertaking final product manufacturing was related to higher-value tobacco exports but was not related to tobacco making a bigger contribution to the economy. CONCLUSIONS TTLCs continue to control the global tobacco supply chain through their globe-spanning subsidiaries. The presence of TTLCs in a country is associated with political interference. Countries should consider their participation in the tobacco supply chain alongside the understanding that they are likely to cede political power to TTLCs, potentially undermining the health of their populations. IMPLICATIONS Tobacco control research has traditionally concentrated on the demand side of tobacco. Our results lend support to calls for more research on the supply of tobacco. Governments should require tobacco companies to provide detailed, up-to-date information in an easily accessible format on in-country supply chain activities. Policymakers should take the likelihood of political interference in health and environmental policy into account when making decisions about foreign direct investment offered by the tobacco industry.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION One major assumption in the current tobacco industry is the distribution of tobacco products through a system of commercial for-profit retail. However, other models of distribution that do not rely on this mechanism exist. AIMS AND METHODS In this review, we examine the potential of a nonprofit Compassion Club model and discuss how the current existence of independent vape stores might provide the infrastructure to allow the transformation of tobacco distribution. RESULTS Compassion Clubs exist internationally with different levels of regulation and legality and have generally been focused on the distribution of illegal drugs or hard-to-access pharmaceuticals. They provide access to drugs for existing users, limit access by novices, limit negative impacts from illicit markets, and provide social support focused on reducing harms associated with drug use. CONCLUSIONS With decreasing prevalence of tobacco use in many countries and growing interest in a tobacco endgame, a Compassion Club model of distribution could help transition tobacco away from the model of commercial widely available distribution. More work is needed to develop the regulations and policies that might guide a compassion club model. IMPLICATIONS Compassion clubs are a model for the distribution of psychoactive substances that are focused on harm reduction and social support rather than profit. There has been little discussion about the possibility that this promising model could be applied to help transform the tobacco industry. Many independent vape stores already demonstrate aspects of the compassion club model that could be used to support a transition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the extent to which people who smoke, people who vape and nonsmokers would switch between smoking cigarettes and vaping in response to policies (price increases, restrictions on nicotine, places, and information on addictiveness and/or health risks) aimed at decreasing tobacco use by people who smoke and vaping by nonsmokers. DESIGN A total of 525 adults aged 18 to 88 years completed a discrete choice survey of 16 choices between two smoking/vaping alternatives. Analysis was conducted using conditional logistic regression for the entire sample and stratified by nonsmokers, people who smoke, and people who vape. RESULTS The results suggest that most people who vape also smoke. Nonsmokers were more favorable to vaping and were concerned about long-term health risks and cost associated with vaping. Marginal analysis suggests that price increases will have only modest success in moving people who smoke to start vaping or encouraging people who vape to vape rather than use cigarettes. Nonsmokers are not very sensitive to price changes but are sensitive to information about health impacts. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate that increasing the price of cigarettes would lead to a limited increase in the probability of people who smoke switch to vaping. The study advances our understanding of the views of current nonsmokers toward cigarettes and vaping, suggesting that price increases and increased knowledge of addiction would likely deter nonsmokers from vaping. Changing the amount of nicotine associated with smoking would increase the probability of vaping slightly and have little impact on nonsmokers or vaping preferences, but the most significant change would come from increasing the perceptions of the risk of smoking.

Abstract
Carbon nanosol (CNS) is a carbon-based nanomaterial that promotes plant growth; however, its functional mechanisms and effects on the microbiome are not fully understood. Here, we explored the effects of CNS on the relationship between the soil, endophytic microbiomes and plant productivity. CNS treatment increased the fresh biomass of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants by 27.4% ± 9.9%. Amplicon sequencing analysis showed that the CNS treatment significantly affected the composition and diversity of the microbial communities in multiple ecological niches associated with tobacco, especially the bulk soil and stem endophytic microbiome. Furthermore, the application of CNS resulted in enhanced network connectivity and stability of the microbial communities in different niches, particularly in the soil, implying a strengthening of certain microbial interactions. Certain potentially growth-promoting root endophytic bacteria were more abundant under the CNS treatment. In addition, CNS increased the abundance of some endophytic microbial functional genes known to enhance plant growth, such as those associated with nutrient metabolism and the plant hormone biosynthesis pathways. We isolated two bacterial strains (Sphingopyxis sp. and Novosphingobium sp.) that were enriched under CNS treatment, and they were confirmed to promote tobacco plant growth in vitro. These results suggested that CNS might, at least in part, promote plant growth by enriching beneficial bacteria in the microbiome.

Abstract
Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a persistent chronic bronchitis disease, and its potential biomarkers have not been fully expounded. This study aims to explore the role of Guanine nucleotide binding protein like-3-like (GNL3L) in COPD induced by cigarette smoking (CS) in vivo. Methods Two microarray datasets of COPD were selected to screen differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A protein-protein interaction network was constructed to find hub genes. The COPD model was conducted using CS/LPS-induced mouse and cigarette smoke extract induced human bronchial epithelial cells. The pathological changes of lung tissue in mice were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and mean linear intercept. Cell viability was measured by CCK8 assay. Oxidative stress-related indicators, inflammatory factors, and ATM/p53 related-proteins were assessed using ELISA and Western blot. Results In this study, there were 110 common DEGs identified from the two datasets (GSE5058 and GSE38974). The key gene GNL3L was the optimal indicator to distinguish between samples with COPD and healthy controls. Through the in vivo and in vitro experiments, GNL3L knockdown significantly improved the pathological features of CS/LPS-induced COPD mice, promoted cell viability, inhibited inflammation (IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α), oxidative stress (MDA, SOD, and CAT), and ATM/p53 related-proteins (ATM, p53, and p21). Conclusion GNL3L is a novel biomarker of COPD, and knockdown of GNL3L participates in the progression of COPD by inhibiting ATM/p53 pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography for high-risk populations is being implemented in the UK. However, inclusive identification and invitation of the high-risk population is a major challenge for equitable lung screening implementation. Primary care electronic health records (EHRs) can be used to identify lung screening-eligible individuals based on age and smoking history, but the quality of EHR smoking data is limited. This study piloted a novel strategy for ascertaining smoking status in primary care and tested EHR search combinations to identify those potentially eligible for lung cancer screening. METHODS Seven primary care General Practices in South Wales, UK were included. Practice-level data on missing tobacco codes in EHRs were obtained. To update patient EHRs with no tobacco code, we developed and tested an algorithm that sent a text message request to patients via their GP practice to update their smoking status. The patient's response automatically updated their EHR with the relevant tobacco code. Four search strategies using different combinations of tobacco codes for the age range 55-74+ 364 were tested to estimate the likely impact on the potential lung screening-eligible population in Wales. Search strategies included: BROAD (wide range of ever smoking codes); VOLUME (wide range of ever-smoking codes excluding "trivial" former smoking); FOCUSED (cigarette-related tobacco codes only), and RECENT (current smoking within the last 20 years). RESULTS Tobacco codes were not recorded for 3.3% of patients (n = 724/21,956). Of those with no tobacco code and a validated mobile telephone number (n = 333), 55% (n = 183) responded via text message with their smoking status. Of the 183 patients who responded, 43.2% (n = 79) had a history of smoking and were potentially eligible for lung cancer screening. Applying the BROAD search strategy was projected to result in an additional 148,522 patients eligible to receive an invitation for lung cancer screening when compared to the RECENT strategy. CONCLUSION An automated text message system could be used to improve the completeness of primary care EHR smoking data in preparation for rolling out a national lung cancer screening programme. Varying the search strategy for tobacco codes may have profound implications for the size of the population eligible for lung-screening invitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Ghana, it is against the law for children to smoke. Nevertheless, a portion of children in the country do smoke. However, there is a paucity of research on young smokers in Ghana and other sub-Saharan African nations. This study, therefore, investigated the prevalence of smoking, the kinds of substances children smoke, predictors of smoking, reasons for and factors that lead children to smoke, and regulation of smoking among children in Ghana. METHODS In total, 5024 children aged 8-17 were studied using a cross-sectional convergent parallel mixed method. Descriptive statistics, Person's Chi-square test, Fisher Exact test, and binary logistic regression were used to analyse the quantitative data. In contrast, thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. RESULTS The results showed that 3.2% of children had ever smoked. Male children smoked more often than female children. The prevalence of cigarette, marijuana, and shisha smoking was 78.3%, 18%, and 3.7%, respectively. While more male children than female children smoked cigarettes and marijuana, more female children than male children used shisha. Children mainly smoked for fun and due to group culture. In addition, children were influenced by friends; parents, family members, and neighbours who smoke; curiosity; and advertisements and videos to initiate smoking. Despite the availability of regulations and laws regulating tobacco products in public places, tobacco advertisement, promotion, and sale to persons under 18, children are still smoking. CONCLUSIONS Children who have ever engaged in smoking reported using cigarettes, marijuana, and shisha. Policymakers urgently need to strategise and strengthen their policies, programmes, and interventions to address smoking among children.

Abstract
The respiratory consequences of cannabis inhalation remain poorly understood. The main challenges are the biases due to the combined consumption of tobacco and to the various consumption modalities. While some similarities can be drawn between cannabis and tobacco, such as certain carcinogenic components present in their smoke, as well as the clinical chronic bronchitis, the pulmonary repercussion of these two substances differ in several aspects. It should be remembered that research on cannabis benefits from less hindsight than that of tobacco and concerns a younger population, opening up the need for further research. This article aims to offer an overview of current knowledge.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal and readily accumulates in tobacco, which imperils public health via Cd exposure from smoking. Beneficial microbes have a pivotal role in promoting plant growth, especially under environmental stresses such as heavy metal stresses. In this study, we introduced a novel fungal strain Trichoderma nigricans T32781, and investigated its capacity to alleviate Cd-induced stress in tobacco plants through comprehensive physiological and omics analyses. Our findings revealed that T32781 inoculation in soil leads to a substantial reduction in Cd-induced growth inhibition. This was evidenced by increased plant height, enhanced biomass accumulation, and improved photosynthesis, as indicated by higher values of key photosynthetic parameters, including the maximum quantum yield of photosystem Ⅱ (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance (Gs), photosynthetic rate (Pn) and transpiration rate (Tr). Furthermore, element analysis demonstrated that T. nigricans T32781 inoculation resulted in a remarkable reduction of Cd uptake by 62.2% and a 37.8% decrease in available soil Cd compared to Cd-stressed plants without inoculation. The protective role of T32781 extended to mitigating Cd-induced oxidative stress by improving antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Metabolic profiling of tobacco roots identified 43 key metabolites, with notable contributions from compounds like nicotinic acid, succinic acid, and fumaric acid in reducing Cd toxicity in T32781-inoculated plants. Additionally, rhizosphere microbiome analysis highlighted the promotion of beneficial microbes, including Gemmatimonas and Sphingomonas, by T32781 inoculation, which potentially contributed to the restoration of plant growth under Cd exposure. In summary, our study demonstrated that T. nigricans T32781 effectively alleviated Cd stress in tobacco plants by reducing Cd uptake, alleviating Cd-induced oxidative stress, influencing plant metabolite and modulating the microbial composition in the rhizosphere. These findings offer a novel perspective and a promising candidate strain for enhancing Cd tolerance and prohibiting its accumulation in plants to reduce health risks associated with exposure to Cd-contaminated plants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine concurrent polysubstance use of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana and determine correlations with access to marijuana, friend and familial drug use habits, risk perception and the age of initiation associated with the singular use of these substances. DESIGN A secondary data analysis. SETTING Used the Jamaica National Drug Prevalence Survey 2016 dataset. PARTICIPANTS Involved the entire dataset comprising 4623 randomly selected respondents between 12 and 65 years old. OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome: concurrent polysubstance use recorded as using two or more of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. Predictor variables include risk perception and age of initiation of singular alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use, ease of marijuana access and family and friend alcohol and illegal drug use. RESULTS Approximately 58%-66% of respondents commenced singular alcohol, tobacco or marijuana use under 17. Participants commencing marijuana use at 11 years and under and between 12 and 17 were 3.346 and 4.560 times more likely to report past month concurrent polysubstance use (p=0.030 and p<0.001). Respondents who did not believe that smoking tobacco sometimes (p=0.049), and smoking marijuana sometimes and often was harmful, had increased odds of concurrent polysubstance use (p=0.047 and p<0.001, respectively). Respondents who indicated access to marijuana as easy were significantly more likely to report past month concurrent polysubstance use compared with those who reported access as difficult (p=0.002). Participants who indicated that friends or family members get drunk and take illegal drugs were associated with 1.722 and 1.864 increased odds of reporting past month concurrent polysubstance use (p=0.004 and p=0.017, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Decreased perceived risk, childhood and adolescent age of initiation and easy access to marijuana were significantly associated with polysubstance use among Jamaicans. The influence of friends and family members' drug and alcohol use behaviours on individuals developing polysubstance use habits further endorses the need for interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health warning labels (HWLs) represent an evidence-based tobacco control strategy; however, their application to heated tobacco products (HTPs) and related impacts are understudied. This study examined the impact of HTP HWLs on HTP use intentions and risk perceptions among current tobacco users. METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from adults in the US and Israel reporting past-month tobacco use and awareness of HTPs (N = 424). Multivariate analyses examined: (1) sociodemographics in relation to self-reported impact of HTP HWLs (i.e., more concerned about HTP use, reassured, no effect [referent]) among those who noticed HTP HWLs (multinomial regressions); and (2) HWL impacts in relation to HTP use intentions and perceived addictiveness and harm (linear regressions). RESULTS Among participants who noticed HTP HWLs (n = 372, 87.7%), 27.7% reported HWLs increased their concerns about HTP use, 22.6% were reassured about use, and 49.7% reported no effect. Factors associated with increased concern (vs. no effect) included other tobacco product use (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI 1.21-3.64) and being female (aOR = 1.77, 95% CI 1.03-3.05). Factors associated with being reassured about HTPs use (vs. no effect) included current HTP use (aOR = 2.11, 95% CI 1.11-4.00) and being from Israel (vs. US: aOR = 3.85, 95% CI 1.85-7.69), female (aOR = 1.91, 95% CI 1.07-3.42), and less educated (< college education: aOR = 2.57, 95% CI 1.42-4.63). Reporting that HWLs on HTPs increased concern (β = 0.46, 95% CI 0.03-0.89) and reassured of use (β = 0.94, 95% CI 0.47-1.41) were positively associated with HTP use intentions; no associations with risk perceptions were found. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate that most tobacco users noticed HWLs on HTPs, but the majority reported no effect or being reassured of using HTPs, effects that were magnified for specific subgroups. Both increased concern and reassurance correlated with greater use intentions. Additional research should evaluate HTP HWL impacts and ensure effectiveness in communicating risks and discouraging use.

Abstract
Tobacco vendors are critical stakeholders in the tobacco supply chain. This study examined their perception, compliance, and potential economic impact of Nigeria's tobacco control laws related to the retail setting. This was a qualitative study involving in-depth interviews of 24 purposively selected tobacco vendors. The face-to-face interviews were aided by a semi-structured interview guide, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis with NVivo version 12. Five themes emerged, encompassing reasons for selling tobacco, awareness, perception, compliance with tobacco sales laws, the potential economic impact of the laws, and law enforcement activities. Vendors commenced tobacco sales due to consumers' demand, profit motives, and advice from close family relatives. They were unaware and non-compliant with most of the retail-related laws. Most participants had positive perceptions about the ban on sales to and by minors, were indifferent about the ban on Tobacco Advertising Promotion and Sponsorships (TAPS) and product display, and had negative perceptions about the ban on sales of single sticks. Most vendors stated quitting tobacco sales would not have a serious economic impact on their business. In conclusion, the vendors demonstrated limited awareness and non-compliance with various retail-oriented tobacco control laws in Nigeria. Addressing these gaps requires targeted educational campaigns and effective law enforcement strategies to enhance vendors' compliance.

Abstract
Cigarette butts, as easily overlooked littered wastes, have been evaluated for toxicity in various researches. In this study, we investigated the toxic effects of smoked cigarette butt leachate (SCBL) on the earthworm Eisenia fetida. The results showed the following: 1) E. fetida avoided SCBL in artificial soil, and the avoidance rate was positively correlated with the concentration of SCBL but negatively correlated with the exposure time; 2) the LD50 of SCBL on earthworms at 36 and 48 h of exposure were 3.71 × 10-4 and 2.67 × 10-4 butts/cm2, respectively. Moreover, both the body surface and intestinal tissues of E. fetida were damaged after exposure to SCBL; 3) the survival rates of E. fetida exposed to artificial soil with an SCBL of 3.6 butts/kg for 7 and 14 days were 80.00 ± 7.07 % and 68.00 ± 4.47 %, respectively; and 4) the mean biomass of the surviving E. fetida in all treated groups decreased with increasing SCBL concentration and exposure time. We concluded that SCBL exerted significant negative effects on soil animals, and suggested that SCBs should be collected, detoxified, and reused before entering the natural environment.

Abstract
In-situ utilization of lunar soil resources will effectively improve the self-sufficiency of bioregenerative life support systems for future lunar bases. Therefore, we have explored the microbiological method to transform lunar soil into a substrate for plant cultivation. In this study, five species of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria are used as test strains, and a 21-day bio-improving experiment with another 24-day Nicotiana benthamiana cultivation experiment are carried out on lunar regolith simulant. We have observed that the phosphorus-solublizing bacteria Bacillus mucilaginosus, Bacillus megaterium, and Pseudomonas fluorescens can tolerate the lunar regolith simulant conditions and dissociate the insoluble phosphorus from the regolith simulant. The phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria treatment improves the available phosphorus content of the regolith simulant, promoting the growth of Nicotiana benthamiana. Here we demonstrate that the phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria can effectively improve the fertility of lunar regolith simulant, making it a good cultivation substrate for higher plants. The results can lay a technical foundation for plant cultivation based on lunar regolith resources in future lunar bases.

Abstract
The active ingredients from tobacco extracts were continuously separated and purified using a homemade free-flow electrophoresis apparatus. A rectangular free flow electrophoresis device was constructed for the continuous separation and preparation, and the operating conditions of the device were optimized. The fractions obtained from the free-flowing component collection unit were then detected by HPLC and GC-MS. The results showed that a 90% methanol-water solution could maximize the extraction of the active components from tobacco. Chlorogenic acid and nicotine were enriched in three and four of 24 fractions, respectively, after free-flow isoelectric focusing electrophoresis. 2-Hydroxy-2-cyclopentene-1-one, 1-(2-methyl-1,3-oxathiolan-2-yl) ethanone, nornicotine, cotinine, and scopolamine were separated and enriched synchronously. Overall, the use of free-flow electrophoresis technology for the separation and purification of the active substances in tobacco can improve the comprehensive utilization rate of tobacco.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The minimum age for cigarette sales in Thailand was increased from 18 to 20 years, as stipulated in the Tobacco Products Control Act B.E. 2017. This study investigated tobacco retailers' perceptions, cigarette sales behaviour and other factors relevant to selling cigarettes to people younger than 20 years in areas surrounding schools in Thailand. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. SETTING Tobacco shops within a radius of 500 m of secondary schools across four regions of Thailand. Data collection took place between May and August 2019. PARTICIPANTS 1440 tobacco retailers (grocery or convenience stores) were sampled via a stratified, two-stage cluster sampling method. 1021 retailers completed the self-administered questionnaire. OUTCOME MEASURES Tobacco sales to people younger than 20 years. RESULTS The prevalence of the retailers' cigarette sales to youth younger than 20 years was 38.20% (95% CI 35.2% to 41.3%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed associations with sale of single cigarettes (adjusted OR (AOR) 23.14, 95% CI 15.13 to 35.39), self-service sale of cigarettes (4.21, 2.59 to 6.86) and display of cigarettes at the point of sale (2.39, 1.47 to 3.89). Cigarette sales to underage youth were higher among retailers located in the northeast region (AOR 2.09, 95% CI 1.20 to 3.64) and among those who did not perceive the prosecution of violators in the past year (1.85, 1.16 to 2.96). CONCLUSION A large percentage of cigarette retailers violated the laws related to underage cigarette sales. Measures to minimise retailers' legally non-compliant sales behaviours should be implemented along with improved legal enforcement.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tobacco kills half of its users. Despite this, there are over 1.1 billion smokers worldwide. Its harmful effects impair performance and readiness. Unfortunately, smoking has deeply ingrained in the military culture, as evidenced by the high prevalence. Hence, this study aims to identify the barriers to smoking cessation among this population. METHODS A study involving two groups of current smokers (commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers) was conducted using the modified nominal group technique (mNGT), a qualitative research method of judgmental decision-making involving four phases: Generating ideas, recording, evaluation, and prioritization. The mNGT was used to solicit respondents' barriers to smoking cessation. RESULTS The mNGT yielded seven main barriers to smoking cessation: (1) Addiction, (2) difficulty in staying focused without the usage of cigarettes, (3) smoking has been incorporated into an individual's lifestyle, (4) environmental influence, (5) coping mechanism, (6) the long-interval period between orders and duties exacerbates the desire to smoke, and (7) smoking has evolved into a permanent habit. Although nicotine addiction and habit were ranked as the most important barriers, the military working environment and nature of the job exposed them physically and mentally to unfavorable situations, complicating the quitting attempt. Furthermore, the acceptance of smoking in military culture leads to a positive smoker identity, further hindering cessation. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that in addition to barriers affecting the general population, military-specific barriers related to the nature of the job exist, complicating cessation. Hence, any intervention program should address these barriers to achieve positive outcomes.

Abstract
Tobacco product use during adolescence increases the risk for lifelong nicotine addiction and adverse health consequences. CDC and the Food and Drug Administration analyzed data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey to assess tobacco product use patterns among U.S. middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students. In 2023, 10.0% of middle and high school students (2.80 million) reported current (i.e., past 30-day) use of any tobacco product. Current use of any tobacco product by high school students declined by an estimated 540,000, from 2.51 million in 2022 to 1.97 million in 2023. From 2022 to 2023, current e-cigarette use among high school students declined from 14.1% to 10.0%. Among middle and high school students, e-cigarette products were the most used tobacco product in 2023 (7.7%; 2.13 million), followed by cigarettes (1.6%), cigars (1.6%), nicotine pouches (1.5%), smokeless tobacco (1.2%), other oral nicotine products (1.2%), hookahs (1.1%), heated tobacco products (1.0%), and pipe tobacco (0.5%). Among students who had ever used an e-cigarette, 46.7% reported current use. In 2023, among students reporting current e-cigarette use, 89.4% used flavored products and 25.2% used an e-cigarette daily; the most commonly reported brands were Elf Bar, Esco Bars, Vuse, JUUL, and Mr. Fog. Given the number of middle and high school students that use tobacco products, sustained efforts to prevent initiation of tobacco product use among young persons and strategies to help young tobacco users quit are critical to reducing U.S. youth tobacco product use.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of smoke derived from cypress (CY), mulberry (MU), metasequoia (ME), pine (PI), and camphor (CA) on the heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAs), flavor, and sensory attributes of smoked pork patty. The results showed that the smoke derived from the five kinds of wood and the flavor of the corresponding smoked meat were classified into three types. Moreover, the smoke of CY and PI, and the smoke of MU and ME can be classified into one category respectively, which significantly improved the flavor of the smoked meat. Both free and protein-bound HAs were detected in smoked meat, while the smoking process significantly increased the HAs content, especially free Norharman (3.26 ng/g in control meat, and 82.24 ng/g in meat smoked with CY). Correlation analysis showed that various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and HAs were closely associated. Future research should pay attention to the VOCs in smoked meat including vanillin, Close attention should be paid to tridecane and crotonic acid, as well as tetradecane and α-Dehydro-ar-himachalene in smoke, which were consistently correlated with various HAs and may participate in HAs formation. These results may reveal how the smoking process influences the formation of HAs and which factors should be targeted to inhibit HAs in smoked meat products.

Abstract
Nicotine is a known toxin, but its relationship with cervicovaginal high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is uncertain. This study aimed to investigate whether tobacco exposure is associated with elevated cervicovaginal HR-HPV infection in US women, and if the strength of this association varies with the degree of exposure. Cross-sectional data from the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included a nationally representative sample of US women, were used for the study. Out of 12436 women aged 18-59 who participated in the interview, 3833 were ultimately enrolled in this study. Weighted logistic regression was used to estimate the link between tobacco exposure and cervicovaginal HR-HPV infection. The mean age of participants was 38.6 (SD 12.1) years, and non-Hispanic White individuals accounted for 37.3% of the sample. Those with any tobacco exposure tended to be younger (mean age 37.7 [SD 12.4] years vs 40.3 [11.2] years), non-Hispanic Black (27.8% vs. 15.1%), lower educated (41.8% vs. 29.4%), and have lower family income (39.9% vs. 23.5%). After adjustment, the odds of having HR-HPV infection were 1.32 (95% CI, 1.09-1.59) for those exposed to tobacco, remaining significant in multiple sensitivity analyses and across subgroups. This study, based on a nationally representative sample from the United States, suggests that tobacco exposure is a risk factor for elevated HR-HPV infection in women, highlighting the need for further research into reducing this modifiable risk factor.

Abstract
Evidence suggests adverse health effects from vaporized nicotine (VN) use, such as electronic "e" cigarettes, and limited efficacy to aid tobacco cessation. People with HIV (PWH) smoke tobacco at higher rates than the general population, with greater morbidity, highlighting the necessity of effective tobacco cessation tools. PWH may be more vulnerable to adverse effects of VN. Using semi-structured 1:1 interviews, we examined health beliefs regarding VN, patterns of use, and perceived effectiveness for tobacco cessation among PWH in HIV care at three geographically diverse U.S. sites. PWH (n = 24) had limited understanding of VN product content or health effects, presuming VN less harmful than tobacco cigarettes (TC). VN failed to adequately replicate the psychoactive effects or desired ritual of smoking TC. Concurrent TC use, and continuous VN use throughout the day, was common. Satiety using VN was elusive, and consumption quantity was difficult to track. VN had limited desirability and durability as a TC cessation tool among the interviewed PWH.
