Abstract
Persistent stress increases the probability for developing depression significantly thereafter. Repeated social defeat stress is a widely used model to investigate depressive-like behavior in preclinical models. Hence, the repeated social defeat stress model provided an ideal animal model, through which the hypotheses of prevention and treatment can be investigated. We have successfully induced depressive-like behavior for male C57BL/6J mice with this model. Here, we reported that certain level of during-stress social interactions with single female or multiple male peer(s) exerted a positive role in preventing the development of depressive-like behavior induced by repeated social defeat stress. Our data suggested that the stress-susceptible mice may benefit from positive social interaction, which reduces the chance for depressive-like behavior development. Since numerous studies indicate that the metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) plays an important role in various cognitive functions, we further investigate the treatment effect of 3-cyano-N-(1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl) benzamide (CDPPB) on the depressive-like behavior induced by repeated social defeat stress. Most importantly, robust anti-depressant effects have been achieved through modulating the mGluR5 function. We found that single oral dose administration of CDPPB (20 mg/kg), to some extent, alleviated the social avoidance behaviors for the stress-susceptible mice. Our data implies that the CDPPB, a positive allosteric modulator of mGluR5, is a promising anti-depressant candidate with limited side effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Massa Medicata Fermentata (MMF) is one of the most commonly used traditional fermented Chinese medicines. MMF is widely used for the treatment of digestive diseases such as dyspepsia and flatulence in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, the therapeutic mechanism of MMF is not well understood. METHOD In this study, SD rats received 0.1% iodoacetamide either alone or in combination with water platform sleep deprivation to induce functional dyspepsia and were administered MMF (1 or 3 g/kg/d, ig), mosapride citrate (Mosa., 2 mg/kg/d, ig) or saline for 21 days. After treatment, the sucrose preferences and gastric emptying rates of the rats were assessed; HE staining was used to detect the pathological changes in the rat duodenum; ELISA kits were used to detect motilin (MTL) in the rat duodenum and the serum contents of Interferon-λ (IFN-λ), Interleukin 6 (IL-6), and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α). An approach based on 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing was utilized to explore the intestinal microflora in the colon contents of rats and the metabolism of the microflora to assess the potential mechanisms of MMF in ameliorating functional dyspepsia (FD). In addition, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to detect changes in short fatty acids (SCFAs) in the colon contents of rats. RESULTS MMF reduced the serum levels of TNF-α, and IFN-λ, improved the morphology of duodenal intestinal villi and ameliorated intestinal mucosal lamina propria injury in FD rats, and the sucrose preference increased and the gastric emptying rate decreased in FD rats. MMF alleviated intestinal microflora disturbance and exerted a regulatory effect on Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes, reduced total SCAFs, Butyric Acid, Propionic acid-2-methyl, Butanoic Acid-3-methyl, and Hexanoic acid. CONCLUSIONS These results showed that the effect of MMF on the intestinal flora and its metabolites may provide a new treatment strategy for FD.

Abstract
Animal studies over the past two decades have led to extensive advances in our understanding of pathogenesis of depressive and mood disorders. Among these, rodent behavioural models proved to be of highest informative value. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the most popular behavioural models with respect to physiological, circuit, and molecular biological correlates. Behavioural stress paradigms and behavioural tests are assessed in terms of outcomes, strengths, weaknesses, and translational value, especially in the domain of pharmacological studies.

Abstract
Overexposure to glucocorticoids during gestation can lead to long-term mental disorders. Given the higher prevalence of depression in females, we investigated whether late gestational administration of dexamethasone could generate a depressive-like phenotype in the adult female offspring and if vitamin D could have a neuroprotective effect in this context. Pregnant rats received vitamin D (VitD, 500 IU/day) or vehicle (CTL) during gestation. Other pregnant rats received dexamethasone (Dex 0.1 mg/kg/ - 14th to the 19th gestational day) or dexamethasone + vitamin D (DexVitD). The offspring were tested for anhedonia (sucrose preference) and depressive-like behavior (forced swimming test) at postnatal months (PNM) 3, 6 and 12. Components of the serotonergic system, as well as glucocorticoids' receptors, were evaluated in the dorsal raphe nucleus at PNM 6 and 12. Prenatal vitamin D and dexamethasone increased sucrose preference at PNM 12. Prenatal vitamin D had an antidepressant-like effect at PNM 3 in rats overexposed to dexamethasone. However, at PNM 12, this effect was blunted in the DexVitD group. Prenatal dexamethasone reduced the protein content of SERT, TPH, and 5-HT1A receptors in the dorsal raphe nucleus at 6 but not at 12 PNM. The glucocorticoids' receptors expression was similar in all groups. We concluded that prenatal overexposure to dexamethasone does not change emotional behaviors in females, but it blunts the antidepressant-like effect of gestational vitamin D in an age-dependent manner. The antidepressant-like activity of vitamin D in the offspring was not related either to alterations of the serotonergic system or the glucocorticoids' receptors expression in the dorsal raphe nucleus.

Abstract
The live microbiota ecosystem in the intestine plays a critical role in maintaining the normal physiological and psychological functions in both animals and human beings. However, the chronic effect of microbiota disturbances during prenatal and neonatal developing periods on animal's health remains less studied. In the current study, pregnant ICR mice were fed with an antibiotic diet (7-g nebacitin [bacitracin-neomycin sulphate 2:1]/kg standard diet) from day 14 of conception, and their offspring were provided with the same diet till the termination of the experiments. Dams treated with antibiotics showed increased body weight along with enlarged gut. Antibiotic-treated offspring revealed decreased bodyweight, increased food, water, and sucrose intake. Administration of antibiotics affected corticosterone responsivity to acute 20 min restraint challenge in male pups. In behavior tests, female pups showed decreased movement in open field while male pups revealed decreased latency to open arms in elevated plus maze test and immobility time in tail suspension test. Together, these results suggested that early antibiotic exposure may impact on the food intake, body weight gain, and emotional behavior regulation in mice.

Abstract
Sucrose preference test (SPT) is a most frequently applied method for measuring anhedonia, a core symptom of depression, in rodents. However, the method of SPT still remains problematic mainly due to the primitive, irregular, and inaccurate various types of home-made equipment in laboratories, causing imprecise, inconsistent, and variable results. To overcome this issue, we devised a novel method for automatic detection of anhedonia in mice using an electronic apparatus with its program for automated detecting the behavior of drinking of mice instead of manual weighing the water bottles. In this system, the liquid surface of the bottles was monitored electronically by infrared monitoring elements which were assembled beside the plane of the water surface and the information of times and duration of each drinking was collected to the principal machine. A corresponding computer program was written and installed in a computer connected to the principal machine for outputting and analyzing the data. This new method, based on the automated system, was sensitive, reliable, and adaptable for evaluation of stress- or drug-induced anhedonia, as well as taste preference and effects of addictive drugs. Extensive application of this automated apparatus for SPT would greatly improve and standardize the behavioral assessment method of anhedonia, being instrumental in novel antidepressant screening and depression researching.

Abstract
AbstractObjectives:To determine the characteristics of causative factors of taste disorders amongst the elderly, and to examine the therapeutic effect of a zinc agent, taking into account age-related factors.Subjects:A total of 408 patients with taste disorders were divided into three groups by age: 49 years or younger, 50 to 64 years old, and 65 years or older.Results:The incidence of taste disorders caused by drug administration and systemic disease were significantly higher in the elderly group. A serum zinc concentration of 69 µg/dl or lower was found in 33 per cent of the elderly group, significantly more (p < 0.001) than the 19 per cent of the 49 years or younger group with such a concentration. Zinc administration was therapeutically effective in 70 per cent of the whole population studied, and in 74 per cent of the elderly population.Conclusions:In the elderly, the incidence of taste disorders caused by drug administration or systemic disease was significantly greater compared with other age groups. The curative effects of zinc administration were not observed to be influenced by age.

Abstract
CONCLUSIONS In Japan, the number of patients seeking treatment for taste disorders from otolaryngologists is approximately 240 000/year, and this number has almost doubled in the last 13 years. Taste examinations are routinely conducted in almost all university hospitals; testing is not as common in private clinics. Administration of zinc is the main treatment for taste disorders in Japan. OBJECTIVES To investigate the number of patients who visited otolaryngologists for treatment of taste disorders between 2000 and 2002. In addition to determining changes in the number of patients that had occurred in the 13 years since the last study in 1990, the survey also sought to find out what types of taste examination were used to diagnose taste disorders in Japan and what therapies were used to treat them. MATERIAL AND METHODS A questionnaire was mailed to 1559 members of the Japan Society of Stomato-pharyngology. RESULTS The average number of patients with taste disorders who visited otolaryngological clinics between 2000 and 2002 was 244 858/year. This number is 1.77-fold greater than the number of patients reported by the last study in 1990 (138 575). Electrogustometry was used in 99% of university hospitals and in 20% of private clinics. The filter-paper disk method was also used in 57% of university hospitals and in 27% of private clinics. The main treatment was zinc administration. Most doctors (70%) prescribed polaprezinc, a zinc-containing drug that is used to treat peptic ulcers. Of these doctors, 78% stated that it effectively treated taste disorders and 11% that it did not.

Abstract
Drugs in every major pharmacological category can impair both taste and smell function and do so more commonly than presently appreciated. Impairment usually affects sensory function at a molecular level, causing 2 major behavioural changes--loss of acuity (i.e. hypogeusia and hyposmia) and/or distortion of function (i.e. dysgeusia and dysosmia). These changes can impair appetite, food intake, cause significant lifestyle changes and may require discontinuation of drug administration. Loss of acuity occurs primarily by drug inactivation of receptor function through inhibition of tastant/odorant receptor: (i) binding; (ii) Gs protein function; (iii) inositol trisphosphate function; (iv) channel (Ca++,Na++) activity; (v) other receptor inhibiting effects; or (vi) some combination of these effects. Distortions occur primarily by a drug inducing abnormal persistence of receptor activity (i.e. normal receptor inactivation does not occur) or through failure to activate: (i) various receptor kinases; (ii) Gi protein function; (iii) cytochrome P450 enzymes; or other effects which usually (iv) turn off receptor function; (v) inactivate tastant/odorant receptor binding; or (vi) some combination of these effects. Termination of drug therapy is commonly associated with termination of taste/smell dysfunction, but occasionally effects persist and require specific therapy to alleviate symptoms. Treatment primarily requires restoration of normal sensory receptor growth, development and/or function. Treatment which restores sensory acuity requires correction of steps initiating receptor and other pathology and includes zinc, theophylline, magnesium and fluoride. Treatment which inhibits sensory distortions requires reactivation of biochemical inhibition at the receptor or inactivation of inappropriate stimulus receptor binding and/or correction of other steps initiating pathology including dopaminergic antagonists, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic agonists, calcium channel blockers and some orally active local anaesthetic, antiarrhythmic drugs.

Abstract
Clinical and histological studies were made on magnesium-deficiency dermatitis produced on a new strain of hairless rats. Superoxide anion generation in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and the inhibitory effect of some antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents against the elicited dermatitis were also examined. From the detection of increased superoxide production and effective actions of inhibitors including superoxide dismutase, cepharanthine, 4-4'-diamono-diphenylsulphone and 5,4,11,14-eicosatetraynoic acid (ETYA), it is indicated that superoxide anion or related activated oxygen may be responsible for magnesium-deficiency dermatitis as an inflammatory mediator and that the dermatitis may be related to lipoxygenase metabolites derived from arachidonic acid.
