Effects of varying levels of phytase supplementation on dry matter and phosphorus digestibility in horses fed a common textured ration

Effect of weight change on markers of bone turnover and phosphorus excretion

There is little information about how weight change in horses impacts bone turnover and the metabolism of minerals associated with bone. This study evaluated weight change in mature horses as a factor that could alter bone turnover and fecal P output. Fifteen horses (555±8 kg) were assigned to three treatments: weight loss (LO; n=5), weight maintenance (MA; n=5), and weight gain (GA; n=5). Diets contained 75%, 100%, and 145% of maintenance digestible energy requirements for the three treatments, respectively, but contained similar amounts of protein and minerals. At the end of the weight change period (27±6 d), blood samples were analyzed for bone biomarkers and a 5-day total fecal collection was conducted to measure fecal mineral output. Horses fed the MA diet had an average daily weight change that was not different from either the GA or LO treatments, while weight change was different between the GA group and the LO group (0.49 kg/d vs -1.16 kg/d; P=0.017). Weight change was negatively correlated with cross-linking C-terminal telopeptides of type-I collagen, a biomarker of bone resorption (r=-0.62; P=0.014) and tended to be positively correlated with bone alkaline phosphatase, a biomarker of bone formation (r=0.48; P=0.068). Also, fecal P output tended to be lower in GA than in LO horses (P=0.085), while MA was intermediate and not different, suggesting that weight loss was increasing bone resorption, resulting in a tendency for higher P loss from the body. Weight change in horses can influence bone metabolism as well as mineral excretion.

The Effect of Diet Composition on the Digestibility and Fecal Excretion of Phosphorus in Horses: A Potential Risk of P Leaching?

Abstract

The main horse phosphorus excretion pathway is through the dung. Phosphorus originating from animal dung and manure has harmful environmental effects on waters. The number of horses has increased in many countries, and several studies have pointed that leaching of P from horse paddocks and pastures are hotspots for high P leaching losses. The hypothesis was that feeding regimes might influence phosphorus digestibility and excretion in feces, and therefore the environmental impact of horse husbandry. A digestibility experiment was conducted with six horses fed six forage-based diets to study phosphorus utilization and excretion in feces. The study method was a total collection of feces. The experimental design was arranged as an unbalanced 6 × 4 Latin Squares. Phosphorus intake increased with an increasing concentrate intake. All studied diets resulted in a positive P balance and, the P retention differed from zero in all except the only-hay diet, in which the intake was lower compared to the other diets. The digestibility of P varied from 2.7 to 11.1%, and supplementing forage-diets with concentrates slightly improved P digestibility (p = 0.024), as it also improved the digestibilities of crude protein (p = 0.002) and organic matter (p = 0.077). The horses excreted an average of 20.9 ± 1.4 g/d P in feces. Excretion was smallest (20.0 g) in horses on a hay-only diet (p = 0.021). The average daily phosphorus excretion resulted in 7.6 kg P per year. The soluble P part of the total P in feces accounted for about 88% of the P excreted in feces, and is vulnerable to runoff losses and may leach into waters. Thus, horse dung may pose a potential risk of P leaching into the environment if not properly managed, and is not less harmful to the environment than that from other farm animals. Supplementation with inorganic P should be controlled in the diets of mature horses in light work to decrease the excretion of P in feces.

Effect of yeast culture on in vitro fermentation of a high-concentrate or high-fiber diet using equine fecal inoculum in a Daisy II incubator

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the use of a closed system, fermentation apparatus (Daisy II incubator) and determine the effects of a yeast culture (YC) preparation (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on in vitro microbial populations, diet digestion, and fermentation patterns in horses. In Exp. 1, 4 mature horses were fed a pelleted concentrate and alfalfa cubes in a 50:50 (%, as-fed) ratio. Fecal samples were taken from each horse to form the inoculum and placed in 4 separate incubation vessels. Twenty nylon bags (10 with 0.25 g and 10 with 0.50 g of the total mixed diet) were placed in each vessel, and in vitro fermentation was carried out for 48 h to determine DM, NDF, and ADF digestibility. In Exp. 2, fecal samples were taken from 4 mature horses consuming either a high-concentrate (HC) or high-fiber (HF) diet. Filter bags containing the HC or HF diet were added to the 4 incubation vessels along with their respective inoculums. Yeast culture was added to 2 of the vessels containing the HC or HF diet, whereas the other 2 vessels served as controls. Vessels were incubated as in Exp. 1 with samples taken at 24 and 48 h. Filter bags were used to determine DM, NDF, ADF, and OM digestibility, whereas vessel fluid was analyzed for lactate, ammonia, VFA, and microbial concentrations. Results of Exp. 1 indicated that DM, NDF, and ADF digestibility were greater (P < 0.05), whereas the corresponding CV was lower (P < 0.05) for the 0.25- vs. the 0.50-g sample size. In Exp. 2, YC tended (P = 0.10) to decrease ammonia concentrations in the HF diet and increased (P < 0.05) acetate production in the HC diet when compared with the control. There were no effects of YC on pH, lactate, or the measured microbial populations, as well as DM, NDF, or ADF digestibility. The results did, however, show that in vitro and in vivo DM digestibility estimates were similar within a diet. Data from Exp. 1 indicated that the 0.25-g sample size provides a more accurate estimate of DM digestibility with less variation. Although YC had little, if any, effect in Exp. 2, the results indicated that the Daisy II incubator does provide valid estimates of total tract DM digestibility in the horse. These data provide further evidence that this process would be an effective and practical means of approximating the digestibility of diets with varying concentrate to forage ratios.

The apparent digestibility of phytate phosphorus and the influence of supplemental phytase in horses12

Availability of phytate-bound P as influenced by supplemental phytase was studied in eight horses consuming four diets in a 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment. The treatments were a control (containing a low P level, 18.4 g/d) and three high-P diets. These diets contained P as monocalcium phosphate (MCP; 43.7 g/d), myoinositol hexakisphosphate in the form of wheat and rice bran (MIHP; 41.8 g/d), or MIHP with microbial phytase (MIHPP; 42.5 g/d). The proportions of phytate-bound P were 3, 1, 55, and 56% for the control, MCP, MIHP, and MIHPP, respectively. The MIHPP diet was supplemented with 300 phytase units (FTU)/kg (as-fed basis). Feces and urine were collected quantitatively and analyzed for P, Ca, and Mg. Urinary P excretion was lower (P < 0.05) with the control diet (0 g of P/d) than with the MCP diet (1.0 g of P/d). The low urinary P excretion (0.3 g of P/d) for the MIHP diet suggested low P availability compared with the MCP diet, but apparent digestibility of P expressed as a percentage of intake did not differ (P = 0.065) between these diets. Apparent Ca digestibility was lower (P < 0.05) for the MIHP diet than for the MCP diet (26.4 vs. 42.4%). This difference may have been caused by the origin of the Ca in these diets. Phytase supplementation increased apparent Ca digestibility from 26.4 to 31.5% (P < 0.05). Magnesium was not influenced by the level of phytate in the diet. Our data indicate that phytase supplementation had more influence on Ca digestibility than on P digestibility and suggest that phytase supplementation may be beneficial for improving Ca digestibility for horses receiving a phytate-rich diet.
