Coarctation of the aorta and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return: a unique anatomic and physiologic presentation as seen by echocardiography

Single-Stage Repair of an Unusual Association: Congenital Gerbode Defect, Hypoplastic Aortic Arch, and Partially Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return in an Infant

We present the case of a two-month-old male with congenital Gerbode defect, hypoplastic aortic arch, and left-sided partially anomalous pulmonary venous return. The patient underwent single-stage surgical repair, which consisted of aortic arch advancement with resection of the coarctation segment, pulmonary vein repair, and primary closure of the Gerbode defect. The anomalous pulmonary vein posed a particular challenge due to its size and distance from the left atrium, which we approached with a posterior atrial wall trapdoor baffle technique, without mobilizing the affected vein. Postoperatively and at one year follow-up, there was no evidence of residual lesions and there was unobstructed flow pattern across the aortic arch and the affected pulmonary vein.

Complex venous anomalies: magnetic resonance imaging findings in a 5-year-old boy

We report magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a very unusual venous anomaly case. A 5-year-old boy who had surgical repair of coarctation of the thoracic aorta was referred to our department for evaluation of an enlarged venous structure anterior to the aorta, which had been noted during the surgery. Contrast enhanced dynamic MRI revealed partial anomalous pulmonary venous return to the left azygos vein, double inferior and superior vena cava with the left azygos continuation of the left superior vena cava. The recognition of venous anomalies allows correct planning of surgical and interventional procedures. MRI is a valuable imaging tool providing detailed anatomical information.

Normally connected anomalously draining obstructed pulmonary veins in an infant with mitral atresia: clinical presentation and catheter management

A patient with hypoplastic left ventricle and double outlet right ventricle underwent pulmonary artery band as a newborn. At age 3 months, cardiac catheterization demonstrated complete closure of his atrial septal defect with decompression of the left atrium via a small levo-cardinal vein. Thus, he had normally connected, anomalously draining obstructed pulmonary veins. He underwent successful catheter intervention with excellent release of the obstruction. This rare finding and technical aspects of catheter intervention are discussed.
