Management of Oral Squamous Papilloma Using Annona squamosa (Custard Apple) Leaves: A Novel Case

This report presents the case of a 36-year-old male who was diagnosed with oral squamous papilloma in the palatal region. Excision was planned. The patient in the meantime chewed upon custard apple leaves and reported that the lesion prolapsed over the next few days. On examination, the site showed no signs of scarring or contracture and presented with healthy palatal tissue. The patient was prevented from requiring surgery, which would have shown a longer healing period with heavy reliance on an expensive resource base. This novel observation highlights the benefits of custard apple (Annona squamosa) leaves and warrants that its hepatoprotective, anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-obesity, and lipid-lowering properties are studied in an astute scientific setup with a well-drawn-out research plan.

Clinical and Basic Studies on Therapeutic Efficacy of Herbal Medicines against Mycobacterial Infections

The high incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in developing countries, the resurgence of TB in industrialized countries, and the worldwide increase in the prevalence of Mycobacterium avium complex infections are important global health concerns. However, the development of novel antimycobacterial drugs is currently making very slow progress. Therefore, it is considered that devising improved administration protocols for clinical treatment against intractable mycobacteriosis using existing chemotherapeutics is more practical than awaiting the development of new antimycobacterial drugs. The regulation of host immune responses using immunoadjunctive agents may increase the efficacy of antimicrobial treatment against mycobacteriosis. In particular, the mild and long-term up-regulation of host immune reactions against mycobacterial pathogens using herbal medicines may be beneficial for such immunoadjunctive therapy. This review focuses on the current status regarding basic and clinical studies on protocols using herbal medicines, including medicinal plants, useful for the clinical treatment of intractable mycobacterial infections.

Usefulness of Chinese Herbal Medicines as Host-Directed Therapeutics against Mycobacterial Infections: A Review

An Alternative Approach to Atopic Dermatitis: Part I-Case-Series Presentation

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex disease of obscure pathogenesis. A substantial portion of AD patients treated with conventional therapy become intractable after several cycles of recurrence. Over the last 20 years we have developed an alternative approach to treat many of these patients by diet and Kampo herbal medicine. However, as our approach is highly individualized and the Kampo formulae sometimes complicated, it is not easy to provide evidence to establish usefulness of this approach. In this Review, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method of individualized Kampo therapy, results are presented for a series of patients who had failed with conventional therapy but were treated afterwards in our institution. Based on these data, we contend that there exist a definite subgroup of AD patients in whom conventional therapy fails, but the ‘Diet and Kampo’ approach succeeds, to heal. Therefore, this approach should be considered seriously as a second-line treatment for AD patients. In the Discussion, we review the evidential status of the current conventional strategies for AD treatment in general, and then specifically discuss the possibility of integrating Kampo regimens into it, taking our case-series presented here as evidential basis. We emphasize that Kampo therapy for AD is more ‘art’ than technology, for which expertise is an essential pre-requisite.

Prospects for development of new antimycobacterial drugs

In this article, I have thoroughly reviewed the status of development of new antimycobacterial drugs, particularly fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, levofloxacin, gatifloxacin, sitafloxacin, and moxifloxacin), new macrolides (clarithromycin, azithromycin, and roxithromycin), rifamycin derivatives (rifabutin, rifapentine, and KRM-1648), and others. The main purpose of this review was to describe the in-vitro and in-vivo activities of these drugs against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex. In addition, the therapeutic efficacy of these drugs in the clinical treatment of mycobacterial infections has also been briefly mentioned.
