Association between Serum Trace Elements Levels, Steroid Concentrations, and Reproductive Disorders in Ewes and Does

This study aimed to investigate the association of different reproductive disorders with the status of serum trace elements and steroid hormones in ewes and goats. This study included 131 barren and 11 fertile (control) ewes and 94 barren and 9 fertile (control) goats. Animals were examined gynecologically for reproductive soundness. The animals were bled, and their serum was harvested and assayed for manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), estrogen (E2), and progesterone (P4) levels. The results showed that genital affections were associated with significant changes in serum Se (P=0.001), Fe (P=0.008), and Zn (P=0.01) levels in ewes, as well as Mn (P=0.01) levels in goats. Ewes and goats with cystic ovaries had higher serum Se, Fe, and Zn levels (P=0.0001) than ewes with uterine affections, ovarian inactivity, and controls. Ovarian inactivity was linked to low Se levels in ewes and low Se and Zn levels in goats (P=0.05). Ewes and goats with estrogen-dominant reproductive disorders had higher Se (P=0.01), Fe (P=0.03), and Zn (P=0.01) compared with the control group. Se (P=0.02) and Zn (P=0.05) were lower in ewes and goats affected with P4-dominant genital disorders compared with the control group. It can be concluded that the reproductive disorders are associated with changes in the level of trace elements in blood of ewes and goats. There is a reciprocal relationship between the levels of estrogen and progesterone with those of the trace elements in serum of ewes and goats.

A Comprehensive Review on Selenium and Its Effects on Human Health and Distribution in Middle Eastern Countries

Selenium (Se) is an important microelement with numerous positive effects on human health and diseases. It is important to specify that the status and consumption of Se are for a specific community as the levels of Se are extremely unpredictable between different populations and regions. Our existing paper was based on the impacts of Se on human health and disease along with data on the Se levels in Middle Eastern countries. Overall, the findings of this comprehensive review show that the consumption and levels of Se are inadequate in Middle Eastern nations. Such findings, together with the growing awareness of the importance of Se to general health, require further work primarily on creating an acceptable range of blood Se concentration or other measures to determine optimal Se consumption and, consequently, to guarantee adequate Se supplementation in populations at high risk of low Se intake.

The assessment of trace metals at gill, muscle and liver tissue in Mugil cephalus

In this paper, concentrations of trace metals such as Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Ag, Cd and Pb were determined in Mugil cephalus of the middle Black Sea coasts by employing inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and microwave digestion technique. Different parts of fish samples were analysed separately such as the gill, muscle and liver. The accuracy of the results has been checked by using a certified reference material (DORM-4). The highest trace metal values determined in different parts of fish were Cr in muscle tissue (0.416 μg/g), Mn in gill tissue (52.246 μg/g), Fe in muscle tissue (11.899 μg/g), Ni in muscle tissue (108.057 μg/g), Cu in liver tissue (261.911 μg/g), As in liver tissue (4.162 μg/g), Se in liver tissue (11.418 μg/g), Ag in liver tissue (0.323 μg/g), Cd in liver tissue (1.11 μg/g) and Pb in gill tissue (3.047 μg/g). These results were also compared with various relevant literature and guidelines.

A review of dietary selenium intake and selenium status in Europe and the Middle East

This is a systematic review of existing data on dietary selenium (Se) intake and status for various population groups in Europe (including the United Kingdom (UK)) and the Middle East. It includes English language systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, cross-sectional and case-control studies obtained through PUBMED searches from January, 2002, to November, 2014, for European data and from 1990 to November 2014, for Middle Eastern data. Reports were selected if they included data on Se intake and status. The search identified 19 European/UK studies and 15 investigations in the Middle East that reported Se intake and Se concentration in water and/or food and 48 European/UK studies and 44 investigations in the Middle East reporting Se status. Suboptimal Se status was reported to be widespread throughout Europe, the UK and the Middle East, and these results agreed with previous reports highlighting the problem. Eastern European countries had lower Se intake than Western European countries. Middle Eastern studies provided varying results, possibly due to varying food habits and imports in different regions and within differing socioeconomic groups. In conclusion, Se intake and status is suboptimal in European and Middle Eastern countries, with less consistency in the Middle East.
