Acute adaptation of central and peripheral motor unit features to exercise-induced fatigue differs with concentric and eccentric loading

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of this study? Conflicting evidence exists on motor unit (MU) firing rate in response to exercise-induced fatigue, possibly due to the contraction modality used: Do MU properties adapt similarly following concentric and eccentric loading? What is the main finding and its importance? MU firing rate increased following eccentric loading only despite a decline in absolute force. Force steadiness deteriorated following both loading methods. Central and peripheral MU features are altered in a contraction type-dependant manner, which is an important consideration for training interventions.

ABSTRACT

Force output of muscle is partly mediated by the adjustment of motor unit (MU) firing rate (FR). Disparities in MU features in response to fatigue may be influenced by contraction type, as concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions demand variable amounts of neural input, which alters the response to fatigue. This study aimed to determine the effects of fatigue following CON and ECC loading on MU features of the vastus lateralis (VL). High-density surface (HD-sEMG) and intramuscular (iEMG) electromyography were used to record MU potentials (MUPs) from bilateral VLs of 12 young volunteers (six females) during sustained isometric contractions at 25% and 40% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), before and after completing CON and ECC weighted stepping exercise. Multi-level mixed effects linear regression models were performed with significance assumed as P < 0.05. MVC decreased in both CON and ECC legs post-exercise (P < 0.0001), as did force steadiness at both 25% and 40% MVC (P < 0.004). MU FR increased in ECC at both contraction levels (P < 0.001) but did not change in CON. FR variability increased in both legs at 25% and 40% MVC following fatigue (P < 0.01). From iEMG measures at 25% MVC, MUP shape did not change (P > 0.1) but neuromuscular junction transmission instability increased in both legs (P < 0.04), and markers of fibre membrane excitability increased following CON only (P = 0.018). These data demonstrate that central and peripheral MU features are altered following exercise-induced fatigue and differ according to exercise modality. This is important when considering interventional strategies targeting MU function.

The Influence of Fatigue on the Characteristics of Physiological Tremor and Hoffmann Reflex in Young Men

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between changes in physiological tremor after exercise and changes in the traction properties of the stretch reflex indirectly assessed using the Hoffmann reflex test. The research involved 19 young men practicing canoe sprint (age 16.4 ± 0.7 years, body mass 74.4 ± 6.7 kg, body height 182.1 ± 4.3 cm, training experience 4.8 ± 1.6 years). During resting tests, Hoffmann reflex measurements were performed from the soleus muscle, physiological tremor of the lower limb, and the blood lactate concentration was determined. Then, a graded test was carried out on the kayak/canoe ergometer. Immediately after the exercise and in the 10th and 25th minute following the exercise, Hoffmann's reflex of the soleus muscle was measured. The physiological tremor was measured at 5, 15 and 30 min after exercise. Blood lactate concentrations were determined immediately after physiological tremor. Both the parameters of Hoffmann's reflex and physiological tremor changed significantly after exercise. There were no significant interrelationships between Hoffmann reflex measurements and physiological tremor in resting and post-exercise conditions. No significant correlation was detected between changes in physiological tremor and changes in Hoffmann reflex parameters. It is to be assumed that there is no connection between a stretch reflex and a physiological tremor.

Regulation of primary afferent depolarization and homosynaptic post-activation depression during passive and active lengthening, shortening and isometric conditions

PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine whether the modulation of primary afferent depolarization (PAD) and homosynaptic post-activation depression (HPAD) are involved in the lower efficacy of Ia-afferent-α-motoneuron transmission commonly observed during lengthening compared to isometric and shortening conditions.

METHODS

15 healthy young individuals participated in two experimental sessions dedicated to measurement in passive and active muscle states, respectively. In each session, PAD, HPAD and the efficacy of Ia-afferent-α-motoneuron transmission were evaluated during lengthening, shortening and isometric conditions. PAD was evaluated with D1 inhibition technique. Posterior tibial nerve stimulation was used to study HPAD and the efficacy of the Ia-afferent-α-motoneuron transmission through the recording of the soleus Hoffmann reflex (H reflex).

RESULTS

PAD was increased in lengthening than shortening (11.2%) and isometric (12.3%) conditions regardless of muscle state (P < 0.001). HPAD was increased in lengthening than shortening (5.1%) and isometric (4.2%) conditions in the passive muscle state (P < 0.05), while no difference was observed in the active muscle state. H reflex was lower in lengthening than shortening (- 13.2%) and isometric (- 9.4%) conditions in both muscle states (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

These results highlight the specific regulation of PAD and HPAD during lengthening conditions. However, the differences observed during passive lengthening compared to shortening and isometric conditions seem to result from an increase in Ia-afferent discharge, while the variations highlighted during active lengthening might come from polysynaptic descending pathways involving supraspinal centres that could regulate PAD mechanism.

Performance fatigability during isometric vs. concentric quadriceps fatiguing tasks in men and women

In the present study, we aimed to provide a robust comparison of the fatigability of the knee extensors following isometric (ISO) and concentric (CON) tasks. Twenty young adults (25 ± 4 yr, 10 women) randomly performed the ISO and CON quadriceps intermittent fatigue test, consisting of ten (5 s on/5-s off, ISO) or one-hundred (0.5-s on/0.5-s off, CON) contractions with 10 % increments per stage until exhaustion. Performance fatigability was quantified as maximal isometric (MVIC) and concentric (MVCC) torque loss. Voluntary activation and contractile function (peak-twitch) were investigated using peripheral nerve stimulation. Number of stages (6.2 ± 0.7 vs. 4.9 ± 0.8; P < 0.001) and torque-time integral (20,166 ± 7,821 vs. 11,285 ± 4,933 Nm.s; P < 0.001) were greater for ISO than CON. MVIC, MVCC and voluntary activation decreased similarly between sessions (P > 0.05) whereas peak-twitch amplitude decreased more for CON (P < 0.001). The number of contractions was similar across sexes (ISO: men = 62 ± 8, women = 61 ± 5; CON: men = 521 ± 67, women = 458 ± 76, P > 0.05). MVCC was more reduced in women for both sessions (all P < 0.05), while MVIC loss was similar between sexes. We concluded that, despite greater torque-time integral and duration for ISO, both sessions induced a similar performance fatigability at exhaustion. Contractile function was more altered in CON. Finally, sex-related difference in fatigability depends on the contraction mode used during testing.

Antagonist muscle torque at the ankle interfere with maximal voluntary contraction under isometric and anisometric conditions

While resultant maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) is commonly used to assess muscular performance, the simultaneous activation of antagonist muscles may dramatically underestimate the strength of the agonist muscles. Although quantification of antagonist torque has been performed in isometric conditions, it has yet to be determined in anisometric conditions. The aim of the study was to compare the mechanical impact of antagonist torque between eccentric, isometric and concentric contractions in PF and DF MVCs. The MVCs in dorsiflexion (DF) and plantar-flexion (PF) were measured in isometric, concentric and eccentric conditions (10° s^-1) in nine healthy men (26.1 ± 2.7 years; 1.78 ± 0.05 m; 73.4 ± 6.5 kg) through two sessions. Electromyographic (EMG) activities from the soleus, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis, and tibialis anterior muscles were simultaneously recorded. The EMG biofeedback method was used to quantify antagonist torque. Resultant torque significantly underestimated agonist torque in DF MVC (30-65%) and to a lesser extent in PF MVC (3%). Triceps surae antagonist torque was significantly modified with muscle contraction type, showing higher antagonist torque in isometric (29 Nm) than in eccentric (23 Nm, p < 0.001) and concentric (14 Nm, p < 0.001) conditions and resulting in modification of the DF MVC torque-velocity shape. Estimation of the antagonist torque in isometric or anisometric conditions provides new relevant insights to improve neuromuscular performance assessment and to better design strength training and rehabilitation programs related to the torque applied by agonist and antagonist muscles.

JNK activation in TA and EDL muscle is load-dependent in rats receiving identical excitation patterns

As the excitation-contraction coupling is inseparable during voluntary exercise, the relative contribution of the mechanical and neural input on hypertrophy-related molecular signalling is still poorly understood. Herein, we use a rat in-vivo strength exercise model with an electrically-induced standardized excitation pattern, previously shown to induce a load-dependent increase in myonuclear number and hypertrophy, to study acute effects of load on molecular signalling. We assessed protein abundance and specific phosphorylation of the four protein kinases FAK, mTOR, p70S6K and JNK after 2, 10 and 28 min of a low- or high-load contraction, in order to assess the effects of load, exercise duration and muscle-type on their response to exercise. Specific phosphorylation of mTOR, p70S6K and JNK was increased after 28 min of exercise under the low- and high-load protocol. Elevated phosphorylation of mTOR and JNK was detectable already after 2 and 10 min of exercise, respectively, but greatest after 28 min of exercise, and JNK phosphorylation was highly load-dependent. The abundance of all four kinases was higher in TA compared to EDL muscle, p70S6K abundance was increased after exercise in a load-independent manner, and FAK and JNK abundance was reduced after 28 min of exercise in both the exercised and control muscles. In conclusion, the current study shows that JNK activation after a single resistance exercise is load-specific, resembling the previously reported degree of myonuclear accrual and muscle hypertrophy with repetition of the exercise stimulus.

Effect of Cycling Cadence on Neuromuscular Function: A Systematic Review of Acute and Chronic Alterations

There is a wide range of cadence available to cyclists to produce power, yet they choose to pedal across a narrow one. While neuromuscular alterations during a pedaling bout at non-preferred cadences were previously reviewed, modifications subsequent to one fatiguing session or training intervention have not been focused on. We performed a systematic literature search of PubMed and Web of Science up to the end of 2020. Thirteen relevant articles were identified, among which eleven focused on fatigability and two on training intervention. Cadences were mainly defined as “low” and “high” compared with a range of freely chosen cadences for given power output. However, the heterogeneity of selected cadences, neuromuscular assessment methodology, and selected population makes the comparison between the studies complicated. Even though cycling at a high cadence and high intensity impaired more neuromuscular function and performance than low-cadence cycling, it remains unclear if cycling cadence plays a role in the onset of fatigue. Research concerning the effect of training at non-preferred cadences on neuromuscular adaptation allows us to encourage the use of various training stimuli but not to say whether a range of cadences favors subsequent neuromuscular performance.

Reliability and agreement of a dynamic quadriceps incremental test for the assessment of neuromuscular function

The quadriceps-intermittent-fatigue (QIF) test assesses knee extensors strength, endurance and performance fatigability in isometric condition. We aimed to assess reliability and agreement for this test in dynamic conditions and with the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. On two separate sessions, 20 young adults (25 ± 4 yr, 10 women) performed stages of 100 knee extensors concentric contractions at 120°/s (60° range-of-motion) with 10% increments of the initial maximal concentric torque until exhaustion. Performance fatigability across the test was quantified as maximal isometric and concentric torque loss, and its mechanisms were investigated through the responses to transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulations. Reliability and agreement were assessed using ANOVAs, coefficients of variation (CVs) and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) with 95% CI. Good inter-session reliability and high agreement were found for number of contractions [489 ± 75 vs. 503 ± 95; P = 0.20; ICC = 0.85 (0.66; 0.94); CV = 5% (3; 7)] and total work [11,285 ± 4,932 vs. 11,792 ± 5838 Nm.s; P = 0.20; ICC = 0.95 (0.87; 0.98); CV = 8% (5; 11)]. Poor reliability but high agreement were observed for isometric [-33 ± 6 vs. -31 ± 7%; P = 0.13; ICC = 0.47 (0.05; 0.75); CV = 6% (4;8)] and concentric [-20 ± 11% vs. -19 ± 9%; P = 0.82; ICC = 0.26 (-0.22; 0.63); CV = 9% (6; 12)] torque loss. The dynamic QIF test represents a promising tool for neuromuscular evaluation in isokinetic mode.

Moving forward with backward pedaling: a review on eccentric cycling

PURPOSE

There is a profound gap in the understanding of the eccentric cycling intensity continuum, which prevents accurate exercise prescription based on desired physiological responses. This may underestimate the applicability of eccentric cycling for different training purposes. Thus, we aimed to summarize recent research findings and screen for possible new approaches in the prescription and investigation of eccentric cycling.

METHOD

A search for the most relevant and state-of-the-art literature on eccentric cycling was conducted on the PubMed database. Literature from reference lists was also included when relevant.

RESULTS

Transversal studies present comparisons between physiological responses to eccentric and concentric cycling, performed at the same absolute power output or metabolic load. Longitudinal studies evaluate responses to eccentric cycling training by comparing them with concentric cycling and resistance training outcomes. Only one study investigated maximal eccentric cycling capacity and there are no investigations on physiological thresholds and/or exercise intensity domains during eccentric cycling. No study investigated different protocols of eccentric cycling training and the chronic effects of different load configurations.

CONCLUSION

Describing physiological responses to eccentric cycling based on its maximal exercise capacity may be a better way to understand it. The available evidence indicates that clinical populations may benefit from improvements in aerobic power/capacity, exercise tolerance, strength and muscle mass, while healthy and trained individuals may require different eccentric cycling training approaches to benefit from similar improvements. There is limited evidence regarding the mechanisms of acute physiological and chronic adaptive responses to eccentric cycling.

The Relationship Between a Jump-Landing Task and Functional Movement Screen Items : A Validation Study

J Strength Cond Res 33(7): 1855-1863, 2019-Sports injuries and athletic performance are complex areas, which are characterized by manifold interdependencies. The landing error scoring system (LESS) is a valid screening tool to examine bilateral jump-landing mechanics, whereas the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) items are thought to operationalize flexibility and motor behavior during low-intense bodyweight patterns. The aim of the study was to explore possible interdependency of the diagnostic information of these screening tools. Fifty-three athletes (age 23.3 ± 2.1 years) were tested in a sport scientific laboratory. In detail, 31 professional soccer players (third division) and 22 collegiate athletes were studied. Linear, partial correlational, and cluster analysis were performed to examine possible trends. Generally, the sportsmen achieved a LESS score of 6.6 ± 2 and a jumping height of 37 ± 7.8 cm. Partial correlational analysis indicates that trunk control (r = 0.4; p < 0.01) is moderately related to landing mechanics, which in turn was negatively related on LESS height (r = -0.67, p < 0.01). In addition, clustering showed by trend that a higher active straight leg raise (ASLR) score is related to better landing mechanics (ASLR score 1: LESS 6.9 ± 1.8; n = 15 vs. ASLR score 3: LESS 5.6 ± 2.1; n = 10). On the task-specific level, jump-landing mechanics were directly related to jumping performance in this cohort with poor mechanics. On unspecific analysis level, kinetic chain length (ASLR) and trunk control have been identified as potential moderator variables for landing mechanics, indicating that these parameters can limit landing mechanics and ought to be optimized within the individual's context. A potential cognitive strategy shift from internal (FMS) to external focus (LESS) and different muscle recruitment patterns are potential explanations for the nonsignificant linear relationship between the FMS and LESS data.

Moderately elevated extracellular [K+] potentiates submaximal force and power in skeletal muscle via increased [Ca2+]i during contractions

The extracellular K+ concentration ([K+]o) increases during physical exercise. We here studied whether moderately elevated [K+]o may increase force and power output during contractions at in vivo-like subtetanic frequencies and whether such potentiation was associated with increased cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) during contractions. Isolated whole soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) rat muscles were incubated at different levels of [K+]o, and isometric and dynamic contractility were tested at various stimulation frequencies. Furthermore, [Ca2+]i at rest and during contraction was measured along with isometric force in single mouse flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) fibers exposed to elevated [K+]o. Elevating [K+]o from 4 mM up to 8 mM (soleus) and 11 mM (EDL) increased isometric force at subtetanic frequencies, 2–15 Hz in soleus and up to 50 Hz in EDL, while inhibition was seen at tetanic frequency in both muscle types. Elevating [K+]o also increased peak power of dynamic subtetanic contractions, with potentiation being more pronounced in EDL than in soleus muscles. The force-potentiating effect of elevated [K+]o was transient in FDB single fibers, reaching peak after ~4 and 2.5 min in 9 and 11 mM [K+]o, respectively. At the time of peak potentiation, force and [Ca2+]i during 15-Hz contractions were significantly increased, whereas force was slightly decreased and [Ca2+]i unchanged during 50-Hz contractions. Moderate elevation of [K+]o can transiently potentiate force and power during contractions at subtetanic frequencies, which can be explained by a higher [Ca2+]i during contractions.

Muscular Pre-activation Can Boost the Maximal Explosive Eccentric Adaptive Force

The improvement of power is an objective in training of athletes. In order to detect effective methods of exercise, basic research is required regarding the mechanisms of muscular activity. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not a muscular pre-activation prior to an external impulse-like force impact has an effect on the maximal explosive eccentric Adaptive Force (xpAFecc_max). This power capability combines different probable power enhancing mechanisms. To measure the xpAFecc_max an innovative pneumatic device was used. During measuring, the subject tries to hold an isometric position as long as possible. In the moment in which the subjects' maximal isometric holding strength is exceeded, it merges into eccentric muscle action. This process is very close to motions in sports, where an adaptation of the neuromuscular system is required, e.g., force impacts caused by uneven surfaces during skiing. For investigating the effect of pre-activation on the xpAFecc_max of the quadriceps femoris muscle, n = 20 subjects had to pass three different pre-activation levels in a randomized order (level 1: 0.4 bar, level 2: 0.8 bar, level 3: 1.2 bar). After adjusting the standardized pre-pressure by pushing against the interface, an impulse-like load impacted on the distal tibia of the subject. During this, the xpAFecc_max was detected. The maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) was also measured. The torque values of the xpAFecc_max were compared with regard to the pre-activation levels. The results show a significant positive relation between the pre-activation of the quadriceps femoris muscle and the xpAFecc_max (male: p = 0.000, η²= 0.683; female: p = 0.000, η²= 0.907). The average percentage increase of torque amounted +28.15 ± 25.4% between MVIC and xpAFecc_max with pre-pressure level 1, +12.09 ± 7.9% for the xpAFecc_max comparing pre-pressure levels 1 vs. 2 and +2.98 ± 4.2% comparing levels 2 and 3. A higher but not maximal muscular activation prior to a fast impacting eccentric load seems to produce an immediate increase of force outcome. Different possible physiological explanatory approaches and the use as a potential training method are discussed.

Reviewing the Variability-Overuse Injury Hypothesis: Does Movement Variability Relate to Landing Injuries?

PURPOSE

Overuse injuries are common in sport, but complete understanding of injury risk factors remains incomplete. Although biomechanical studies frequently examine musculoskeletal injury mechanisms, human movement variability studies aim to better understand neuromotor functioning, with proposed connections between overuse injury mechanisms and changes in motor variability.

METHOD

In a narrative review, we discuss the variability-overuse injury hypothesis, which suggests repeated load application leads to mechanical tissue breakdown and subsequent injury when exceeding the rate of physiological adaptation. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of this hypothesis, we incorporate concepts from motor control, neurophysiology, biomechanics, as well as research design and data analysis. We therefore summarize multiple perspectives while proposing theoretical relationships between movement variability and lower extremity overuse injuries.

RESULTS

Experimental data are presented and summarized from published experiments examining interactions between experimental task demands and movement variability in the context of drop landing movements, along with comparisons to previous movement variability studies.

CONCLUSION

We provide a conceptual framework for sports medicine researchers interested in predicting and preventing sports injuries. Under performance conditions with greater task demands, we predict reduced trial-to-trial movement variability that could increase the likelihood of overuse injuries.

Contractile benefits of doublet-initiated low-frequency stimulation in rat extensor digitorum longus muscle exposed to high extracellular [K+] or fatiguing contractions

During dynamic contractions, high-frequency muscle activation is needed to achieve optimal power. This must be balanced against an increased excitation-induced accumulation of extracellular K⁺, which can reduce excitability and ultimately may prevent adequate responses to high-frequency activation. Mean activation frequencies in vivo are often low (subtetanic), but activation patterns contain bursts of high (supratetanic) frequencies known as doublets, which enhance dynamic contraction in rested muscles at normal extracellular K⁺ concentration ([K⁺]_o). Here, we examine how dynamic contractions in fast-twitch fibers stimulated by high frequency/doublets are affected during exposure to 11 mM [K⁺]_o and during fatigue. Dynamic contractions were elicited by electrical stimulation in isolated rat extensor digitorum longus muscles incubated at 4 or 11 mM K⁺. When stimulation frequency was maintained constant, an increase from 150 to 300 Hz enhanced maximal power (P_max), maximal velocity (V_max), and rate of force development (RFD) at 4 mM K⁺ but only V_max at 11 mM K⁺. With the use of subtetanic frequency trains (50 Hz) with or without an initiating doublet (300 Hz), the addition of a doublet increased maximal force, P_max, V_max, and RFD at both 4 and 11 mM K⁺. Furthermore, a work-matched fatiguing protocol was performed comparing a doublet-initiated subtetanic train (DT) of 60 Hz with a constant-frequency train (CFT) of 71 Hz during 100 dynamic contractions. We found that DT produced higher power, velocity, and RFD than CFT throughout the fatiguing protocol. The results indicate that doublets enhance dynamic contraction in fast-twitch muscles stimulated at subtetanic frequency during both normal and fatiguing conditions.

Phosphorylation of αB-crystallin and its cytoskeleton association differs in skeletal myofiber types depending on resistance exercise intensity and volume

αB-crystallin (CRYAB) is an important actor in the immediate cell stabilizing response following mechanical stress in skeletal muscle. Yet, only little is known regarding myofiber type-specific stress responses of CRYAB. We investigated whether the phosphorylation of CRYAB at serine 59 (_pCRYAB^Ser59) and its cytoskeleton association are influenced by varying load-intensity and -volume in a fiber type-specific manner. Male subjects were assigned to 1, 5, and 10 sets of different acute resistance exercise protocols: hypertrophy (HYP), maximum strength (MAX), strength endurance (SE), low intensity (LI), and three sets of maximum eccentric resistance exercise (ECC). Skeletal muscle biopsies were taken at baseline and 30 min after exercise. Western blot revealed an increase in _pCRYAB^Ser59 only following 5 and 10 sets in groups HYP, MAX, SE, and LI as well as following 3 sets in the ECC group. In type I fibers, immunohistochemistry determined increased _pCRYAB^Ser59 in all groups. In type II fibers, _pCRYAB^Ser59 only increased in MAX and ECC groups, with the increase in type II fibers exceeding that of type I fibers in ECC. Association of CRYAB and _pCRYAB^Ser59 with the cytoskeleton reflected the fiber type-specific phosphorylation pattern. Phosphorylation of CRYAB and its association with the cytoskeleton in type I and II myofibers is highly specific in terms of loading intensity and volume. Most likely, this is based on specific recruitment patterns of the different myofiber entities due to the different resistance exercise loadings. We conclude that _pCRYAB^Ser59 indicates contraction-induced mechanical stress exposure of single myofibers in consequence of resistance exercise. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We determined that the phosphorylation of αB-crystallin at serine 59 (_pCRYAB^Ser59) after resistance exercise differs between myofiber types in a load- and intensity-dependent manner. The determination of _pCRYAB^Ser59 could serve as a marker indirectly indicating contractile involvement and applied mechanical stress on individual fibers. By that, it is possible to retrospectively assess the impact of resistance exercise loading on skeletal muscle fiber entities.

Early effects of eccentric contractions on muscle glucose uptake

Muscle-damaging eccentric exercise impairs muscle glucose uptake several hours to days after exercise. Little, however, is known about the acute effects of eccentric exercise on contraction- and insulin-induced glucose uptake. This study compares glucose uptake rates in the first hours following eccentric, concentric, and isometric contractions with and without insulin present. Isolated rat extensor digitorum longus muscles were exposed to either an eccentric, concentric, or isometric contraction protocol, and muscle contractions were induced by electric stimulation that was identical between contraction protocols. In eccentric and concentric modes, length changes of 0.6 or 1.2 mm were used during contractions. Both contraction- and insulin-induced glucose uptake were assessed immediately and 2 h after contractions. Glucose uptake increased significantly following all modes of contraction and was higher after eccentric contractions with a stretch of 1.2 mm compared with the remaining contraction groups when assessed immediately after contractions [eccentric (1.2 mm) > eccentric (0.6 mm), concentric (1.2 mm), concentric (0.6 mm), isometric > rest; P < 0.05]. After 2 h, contraction-induced glucose uptake was still higher than noncontracting levels, but with no difference between contraction modes. The presence of insulin increased glucose uptake markedly, but this response was blunted by, respectively, 39–51% and 29–36% ( P < 0.05) immediately and 2 h after eccentric contractions stretched 1.2 mm compared with concentric and isometric contractions. The contrasting early effects of eccentric contractions on contraction- and insulin-induced glucose uptake suggest that glucose uptake is impaired acutely following eccentric exercise because of reduced insulin responsiveness.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study shows that, in isolated rat muscle, muscle-damaging eccentric contractions result in a transient increase in contraction-induced glucose uptake compared with isometric and concentric contractions induced by identical muscle activation protocols. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that, in contrast, the insulin-stimulated glucose uptake is impaired immediately following muscle-damaging eccentric contractions.

The placebo effect in the motor domain is differently modulated by the external and internal focus of attention

Among the cognitive strategies that can facilitate motor performance in sport and physical practice, a prominent role is played by the direction of the focus of attention and the placebo effect. Consistent evidence converges in indicating that these two cognitive functions can influence the motor outcome, although no study up-to-now tried to study them together in the motor domain. In this explorative study, we combine for the first time these approaches, by applying a placebo procedure to increase force and by manipulating the focus of attention with explicit verbal instructions. Sixty healthy volunteers were asked to perform abduction movements with the index finger as strongly as possible against a piston and attention could be directed either toward the movements of the finger (internal focus, IF) or toward the movements of the piston (external focus, EF). Participants were randomized in 4 groups: two groups underwent a placebo procedure (Placebo-IF and Placebo-EF), in which an inert treatment was applied on the finger with verbal information on its positive effects on force; two groups underwent a control procedure (Control-IF and Control-EF), in which the same treatment was applied with overt information about its inefficacy. The placebo groups were conditioned about the effects of the treatment with a surreptitious amplification of a visual feedback signalling the level of force. During the whole procedure, we recorded actual force, subjective variables and electromyography from the hand muscles. The Placebo-IF group had higher force levels after the procedure than before, whereas the Placebo-EF group had a decrease of force. Electromyography showed that the Placebo-IF group increased the muscle units recruitment without changing the firing rate. These findings show for the first time that the placebo effect in motor performance can be influenced by the subject’s attentional focus, being enhanced with the internal focus of attention.

Recurrent inhibition is higher in eccentric compared to isometric and concentric maximal voluntary contractions

AIM

This study was designed to investigate the influence of muscle contraction type on spinal recurrent inhibition during maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) of the plantar flexor muscles.

METHODS

To that purpose, the paired Hoffmann-reflex (H-reflex) technique permitted to assess changes in recurrent pathway by comparing the modulations of test, reference and conditioning H-reflexes (H', H_ref and H₁ respectively) in the soleus muscle during isometric, concentric and eccentric MVC. Twenty-five subjects participated in an experimental session designed to assess the activity of the recurrent inhibition pathway.

RESULTS

The results indicate that both the electromyographic activity and the amplitude of H₁ normalized to the maximal M-wave (M_max ) were similar regardless of the muscle contraction type while the ratio between H' and H₁ amplitudes was significantly smaller during eccentric compared with isometric and concentric MVC. Furthermore, H_ref and H' amplitudes did not differ significantly during both isometric and concentric MVCs while H' amplitude was significantly lower than H_ref amplitude during eccentric MVC. In addition, the V/M_max ratio was similar for all muscle contraction type and greater H' amplitude was significantly correlated with greater V-wave amplitude regardless of the muscle contraction type.

CONCLUSION

Together, the current results indicate that recurrent inhibition is elevated for the soleus muscle during eccentric compared to isometric and concentric MVC. Data further suggest that the Renshaw cell activity is specifically controlled by the descending neural drive and/or peripheral neural mechanisms during eccentric MVC.

Isometric parameters in the monitoring of maximal strength, power, and hypertrophic resistance-training

This study monitored strength-training adaptations via isometric parameters throughout 2 × 10 weeks of hypertrophic (HYP I–II) or 10 weeks maximum strength (MS) followed by 10 weeks power (P) training with untrained controls. Trainees performed bilateral isometric leg press tests analyzed for peak force (maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)) and rate of force development (RFD) every 3.5 weeks. These parameters were compared with dynamic performance, voluntary and electrically induced isometric contractions, muscle activity, and cross-sectional area (CSA) in the laboratory before and after 10 and 20 weeks. RFD increased similarly during the first 7 weeks (HYP I, 44% ± 53%; MS, 48% ± 55%, P < 0.05), but RFD continued to increase up to 65% ± 61% from baseline (P < 0.01) only during P. These increases were concomitant with enhanced dynamic performances of 1-repetition maximum (1RM) (HYP I, 8% ± 6%; MS, 11% ± 6%, P < 0.001), and explosive repetitions during P (11% ± 15%, P < 0.05). Time to reach peak RFD differed (P < 0.001) between HYP (mean 42 ± 20 ms) and MS-P (mean 31 ± 12 ms) groups because of training. The changes in MVC correlated with the changes in CSA during weeks 1–20 (HYP I–II, r = 0.664; MS-P, r = 0.595, P ≤ 0.05), as well as changes in 1RM (r = 0.724, P < 0.05) during weeks 11–20 (HYP II). Muscle activity increased during MS and P only. Both MVC and RFD improvements reflected combinations of central and peripheral adaptations. RFD parameters may be effective tools to evaluate adaptations, particularly during maximal strength/power training, while MVC cannot distinguish between strength or muscle mass changes. Monitoring RFD provided important information regarding plateaus in RFD improvement, which were observed in dynamic explosive performances after HYP II compared with P.

Load Accommodation Strategies and Movement Variability in Single-Leg Landing

Our purpose was to examine changes in participant-specific single-leg landing strategies and intra-individual movement variability following alterations in mechanical task demands via external load and landing height. Nineteen healthy volunteers (15M, 4 F, age: 24.3 ± 4.9 y, mass: 78.5 ± 14.7 kg, height: 1.73 ± 0.08 m) were analyzed among 9 single-leg drop landing trials in each of 6 experimental conditions (3 load and 2 landing height) computed as percentages of participant bodyweight (BW, BW + 12.5%, BW + 25%) and height (H12.5% & H25%). Lower-extremity sagittal joint angles and moments (hip, knee, and ankle), vertical ground reaction forces (GRFz), and electrical muscle activities (gluteus maximus, biceps femoris, vastus medialis, medial gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscles) were analyzed. Individual single-leg drop landing strategies were identified using landing impulse predictions and the Load Accommodation Strategies Model (James et al., 2014). Intra-individual movement variability was assessed from neuromechanical synergies extracted using single-case principal component analyses (PCA). Fewer contrasting single-leg landing strategies were identified among participants under greater mechanical task demands (p < .001) alongside lesser intra-individual movement variability (p < .001). These results reveal changes in movement control under greater mechanical task demands, which may have implications for understanding overuse injury mechanisms in landing.

Reduced firing rates of high threshold motor units in response to eccentric overload

Acute responses of motor units were investigated during submaximal voluntary isometric tasks following eccentric overload (EO) and constant load (CL) knee extension resistance exercise. Ten healthy resistance-trained participants performed four experimental test sessions separated by 5 days over a 20 day period. Two sessions involved constant load and the other two used eccentric overload. EO and CL used both sessions for different target knee eccentric extension phases; one at 2 sec and the other at 4 sec. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and isometric trapezoid efforts for 10 sec at 70% MVC were completed before and after each intervention and decomposed electromyography was used to measure motor unit firing rate. The firing rate of later recruited, high-threshold motor units declined following the 2-sec EO but was maintained following 2sec CL (P < 0.05), whereas MUFR for all motor units were maintained for both loading types following 4-sec extension phases. MVC and rate of force development where maintained following both EO and CL and 2 and 4 sec phases. This study demonstrates a slower firing rate of high-threshold motor units following fast eccentric overload while MVC was maintained. This suggests that there was a neuromuscular stimulus without cost to the force-generating capacity of the knee extensors.

Changes in Corticospinal and Spinal Excitability to the Biceps Brachii with a Neutral vs. Pronated Handgrip Position Differ between Arm Cycling and Tonic Elbow Flexion

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of neutral and pronated handgrip positions on corticospinal excitability to the biceps brachii during arm cycling. Corticospinal and spinal excitability were assessed using motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited via transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and cervicomedullary-evoked potentials (CMEPs) elicited via transmastoid electrical stimulation (TMES), respectively. Participants were seated upright in front on arm cycle ergometer. Responses were recorded from the biceps brachii at two different crank positions (6 and 12 o'clock positions relative to a clock face) while arm cycling with neutral and pronated handgrip positions. Responses were also elicited during tonic elbow flexion to compare/contrast the results to a non-rhythmic motor output. MEP and CMEP amplitudes were significantly larger at the 6 o'clock position while arm cycling with a neutral handgrip position compared to pronated (45.6 and 29.9%, respectively). There were no differences in MEP and CMEP amplitudes at the 12 o'clock position for either handgrip position. For the tonic contractions, MEPs were significantly larger with a neutral vs. pronated handgrip position (32.6% greater) while there were no difference in CMEPs. Corticospinal excitability was higher with a neutral handgrip position for both arm cycling and tonic elbow flexion. While spinal excitability was also higher with a neutral handgrip position during arm cycling, no difference was observed during tonic elbow flexion. These findings suggest that not only is corticospinal excitability to the biceps brachii modulated at both the supraspinal and spinal level, but that it is influenced differently between rhythmic arm cycling and tonic elbow flexion.

The influence of isometric preload on power expressed during bench press in strength-trained men

The purpose of this study was to compare the power expressed during the bench press exercise in resistance-trained men following different pre-activation conditions. Twenty-two trained men (age 24.1 ± 1.7 years, height 178.6 ± 6.1 cm, body mass 81.1 ± 10.6 kg) completed a maximal effort bench press (1-RM) test (100.0 kg ± 8.1 kg). In a subsequent assessment, each participant performed concentric bench press movements with loads of 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of their 1-RM preceded by either a concentric contraction (CC), a low isometric preload (LIP; 70% 1-RM) or a high isometric preload (HIP; 100% 1-RM) conditions. All movements were performed in a Smith machine with a settable quick-release device. Participants performed all three conditions in randomized fashion. Results indicated that power outputs during the bench press exercise following HIP were significantly (p < 0.05) greater than CC at 20% 1-RM (+9%), 30% 1-RM (+16%) and 40% 1-RM (+14%), and LIP at 20% 1-RM (+4%), 30% 1-RM (+20%) and 40% 1-RM (+15%). No differences were found between conditions at 50% 1-RM. Area under the force-power curve with HIP was greater (p < 0.05) than with CC and LIP. In conclusion, results of this study indicate that the use of a HIP (100% 1-RM) in trained participants results in significantly greater power output during the concentric phase of a multi-joint exercise when compared to standard concentric movement.

Increased hypertrophic response with increased mechanical load in skeletal muscles receiving identical activity patterns

It is often assumed that mechanical factors are important for effects of exercise on muscle, but during voluntary training and most experimental conditions the effects could solely be attributed to differences in electrical activity, and direct evidence for a mechanosensory pathway has been scarce. We here show that, in rat muscles stimulated in vivo under deep anesthesia with identical electrical activity patterns, isometric contractions induced twofold more hypertrophy than contractions with 50-60% of the isometric force. The number of myonuclei and the RNA levels of myogenin and myogenic regulatory factor 4 were increased with high load, suggesting that activation of satellite cells is mechano dependent. On the other hand, training induced a major shift in fiber type distribution from type 2b to 2x that was load independent, indicating that the electrical signaling rather than mechanosignaling controls fiber type. RAC-α serine/threonine-protein kinase (Akt) and ribosomal protein S6 kinase β-1 (S6K1) were not significantly differentially activated by load, suggesting that the differences in mechanical factors were not important for activating the Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin/S6K1 pathway. The transmembrane molecule syndecan-4 implied in overload hypertrophy in cardiac muscle was not load dependent, suggesting that mechanosignaling in skeletal muscle is different.

Neuromechanical synergies in single-leg landing reveal changes in movement control

Our purpose was to examine changes in single-leg landing biomechanics and movement control following alterations in mechanical task demands via external load and landing height. We examined lower-extremity kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic (EMG) adjustments, as well as changes in movement control from neuromechanical synergies using separate principal component analyses (PCA). Nineteen healthy volunteers (15M, 4F, age: 24.3±4.9y, mass: 78.5±14.7kg, height: 1.73±0.08m) were analyzed among 9 single-leg drop landing trials in each of 6 experimental conditions (3 load and 2 landing height) computed as percentages of subject bodyweight (BW, BW+12.5%, BW+25%) and height (H12.5% & H25%). Condition order was counterbalanced, including: 1.) BW·H12.5, 2.) BW+12.5·H12.5, 3.) BW+25·H12.5, 4.) BW·H25, 5.) BW+12.5·H25, 6.) BW+25·H25. Lower-extremity sagittal joint angles and moments (hip, knee, & ankle), vertical ground reaction force (GRFz), and electrical muscle activity (gluteus maximus, biceps femoris, vastus medialis, medial gastrocnemius, & tibialis anterior muscles), were analyzed in each trial. Biomechanical adjustments and neuromechanical synergies were assessed using PCA. Subjects reduced effective landing height through segmental configuration adjustments at ground contact, extending at the hip and ankle joints with greater load and landing height (p⩽0.028 and p⩽0.013, respectively), while using greater medial gastrocnemius pre-activation with greater load (p⩽0.006). Dimension reduction was observed under greater mechanical task demands, compressing and restructuring synergies among patterns of muscle activation, applied loads, and segmental configurations. These results provide insight into movement control and potential injury mechanisms in landing activities.

Mechanomyographic parameter extraction methods: an appraisal for clinical applications

The research conducted in the last three decades has collectively demonstrated that the skeletal muscle performance can be alternatively assessed by mechanomyographic signal (MMG) parameters. Indices of muscle performance, not limited to force, power, work, endurance and the related physiological processes underlying muscle activities during contraction have been evaluated in the light of the signal features. As a non-stationary signal that reflects several distinctive patterns of muscle actions, the illustrations obtained from the literature support the reliability of MMG in the analysis of muscles under voluntary and stimulus evoked contractions. An appraisal of the standard practice including the measurement theories of the methods used to extract parameters of the signal is vital to the application of the signal during experimental and clinical practices, especially in areas where electromyograms are contraindicated or have limited application. As we highlight the underpinning technical guidelines and domains where each method is well-suited, the limitations of the methods are also presented to position the state of the art in MMG parameters extraction, thus providing the theoretical framework for improvement on the current practices to widen the opportunity for new insights and discoveries. Since the signal modality has not been widely deployed due partly to the limited information extractable from the signals when compared with other classical techniques used to assess muscle performance, this survey is particularly relevant to the projected future of MMG applications in the realm of musculoskeletal assessments and in the real time detection of muscle activity.

Aerobic, resistance and combined exercise training on arterial stiffness in normotensive and hypertensive adults: A review

Exercise training has different effects on arterial stiffness according to training modalities. The optimal exercise modality for improvement of arterial function in normotensive and hypertensive individuals has not been well established. In this review, we aim to evaluate the effects of aerobic, resistance and combined aerobic and resistance training on arterial stiffness in individuals with and without hypertension. We systematically searched the Pubmed and Web of Science database from 1985 until December 2013 for relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The data were extracted by one investigator and checked by a second investigator. The training effects on arterial stiffness were estimated using weighted mean differences of the relative changes (%) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We finally reviewed the results from 17 RCTs. The available evidence indicates that aerobic exercise tends to have a beneficial effect on arterial stiffness in normotensive and hypertensive patients, but does not affect arterial stiffness in patients with isolated systolic hypertension. Resistance exercise has differing effects on arterial stiffness depending on type and intensity. Vigorous resistance training is associated with an increase in arterial stiffness. There seem to be no unfavourable effects on arterial stiffness if the training is of low intensity, in a slow eccentric manner or with lower limb in healthy individuals. Combined training has neutral or even a beneficial effect on arterial stiffness. In conclusion, our review shows that exercise training has varying effects on arterial stiffness depending on the exercise modalities.

Metabolic and muscle damage profiles of concentric versus repeated eccentric cycling

PURPOSE

Eccentric cycling is an exercise modality that could elicit multiple health benefits with low metabolic cost, but unaccustomed performance results in significant muscle damage. It is not known whether muscle damage is attenuated when eccentric cycling is repeated; thus, this study compared metabolic and muscle damage responses to concentric (CONC) and two consecutive eccentric (ECC1 and ECC2) cycling bouts.

METHODS

Ten men (28 ± 8 yr) performed each cycling bout for 30 min at 60% of the maximal concentric power output at 60 rpm, with 2 wk between bouts. HR, oxygen consumption (V˙O2), blood lactate (BLa), RPE, and muscle activity (EMG) data were collected during cycling. Maximal voluntary isometric knee extensor (MVC) strength, squat (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ) height, muscle soreness indicators, and plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity were measured before, immediately after, and 1-4 d after exercise.

RESULTS

Average HR, V˙O2, BLa, and RPE were lower (P < 0.05) during ECC1 than CONC, and EMG amplitude was also lower during ECC1 than CONC. Decreases in MVC, CMJ, and SJ and the increase in muscle soreness were greater (P x0003C; 0.05) after ECC1 than CONC. Increases in creatine kinase were minimal after all bouts. When comparing ECC1 and ECC2, HR and BLa were lower (P < 0.05) during ECC2 than ECC1, and decreases in MVC, CMJ, and SJ and the increase in muscle soreness were greater (P < 0.05) after ECC1 than ECC2. After ECC2, MVC, CMJ, and SJ did not change and no muscle soreness was developed.

CONCLUSIONS

Eccentric cycling was less metabolically demanding than concentric cycling, and HR and BLa were further reduced during ECC2. Muscle damage is minimal after ECC2 and should not influence the choice to undertake eccentric cycling training.

Enhanced dynamic EMG-force estimation through calibration and PCI modeling

To accurately estimate muscle forces using electromyogram (EMG) signals, precise EMG amplitude estimation, and a modeling scheme capable of coping with the nonlinearities and dynamics of the EMG-force relationship are needed. In this work, angle-based EMG amplitude calibration and parallel cascade identification (PCI) modeling are combined for EMG-based force estimation in dynamic contractions, including concentric and eccentric contractions of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii muscles. Angle-based calibration has been shown to improve surface EMG (SEMG) based force estimation during isometric contractions through minimization of the effects of joint angle related factors, and PCI modeling captures both the nonlinear and dynamic properties of the process. SEMG data recorded during constant force, constant velocity, and varying force, varying velocity flexion and extension trials are calibrated. The calibration values are obtained at specific elbow joint angles and interpolated to cover a continuous range of joint angles. The calibrated data are used in PCI models to estimate the force induced at the wrist. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the calibration scheme, combined with PCI modeling. For the constant force, constant velocity trials, minimum %RMSE of 8.3% is achieved for concentric contractions, 10.3% for eccentric contractions and 33.3% for fully dynamic contractions. Force estimation accuracy is superior in concentric contractions in comparison to eccentric contractions , which may be indicative of more nonlinearity in the eccentric SEMG-force relationship.

Comparing functional EMG characteristics between zero-order and first-order interface dynamics

The optimal control scheme for powered prostheses can be determined using simulation experiments, for which an accurate model of prosthesis control is essential. This paper focuses on electromyographic (EMG) control signal characteristics across two different control schemes. We constructed a functional EMG model comprising three EMG signal characteristics-standard deviation, kurtosis, and median power frequency-using data collected under realistic conditions for prosthesis control (closed-loop, dynamic, anisometric contractions). We examined how the model changed when subjects used zero-order or first-order control. Control order had a statistically significant effect on EMG characteristics, but the effect size was small and generally did not exceed inter-subject variability. Therefore, we suggest that this functional EMG model remains valid across different control schemes.

Fuel selection during short-term submaximal treadmill exercise in the cold is not affected by pre-exercise low-intensity shivering

Exercise and shivering rely on different metabolic pathways and consequently, fuel selection. The present study examined the effects of a pre-exercise low-intensity shivering protocol on fuel selection during submaximal exercise in a cold environment. Nine male subjects exercised 4 times for 60 min at 50% (LOW) or 70% (MOD) of their peak oxygen consumption on a motorized treadmill in a climatic chamber set at 0 °C with (SHIV) and without (CON) a pre-exercise cooling protocol, inducing low-intensity shivering. Thermal, cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses were measured every 15 min whereas blood samples were collected every 30 min to assess serum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glycerol, glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and plasma catecholamine concentrations. Rectal and skin temperatures were lower in the SHIV condition, within LOW and MOD conditions, during the first 45 min of exercise. Norepinephrine (NE) concentration was greater in SHIV vs. CON within LOW (1.39 ± 0.17 vs. 0.98 ± 0.17 ng·mL(-1)) and MOD (1.50 ± 0.20 vs. 1.01 ± 0.09 ng·mL(-1)), whereas NEFA, glycerol and BHB were greater in SHIV vs. CON (1060 ± 49 vs. 898 ± 78 μmol·L(-1); 0.27 ± 0.02 vs. 0.22 ± 0.03 mmol·L(-1); 0.39 ± 0.06 vs. 0.27 ± 0.04 mmol·L(-1), respectively) within MOD only. No changes were observed in fat or carbohydrate oxidation between SHIV and CON during exercise. Despite increases in NE, NEFA, glycerol and BHB from pre-exercise low-intensity shivering, fuel selection during short-term submaximal exercise in the cold was unaltered.

Posterior muscle chain activity during various extension exercises: an observational study

Background

Back extension exercises are often used in the rehabilitation of low back pain. However, at present it is not clear how the posterior muscles are recruited during different types of extension exercises. Therefore, the present study will evaluate the myoelectric activity of thoracic, lumbar and hip extensor muscles during different extension exercises in healthy persons. Based on these physiological observations we will make recommendations regarding the use of extensions exercises in clinical practice.

Methods

Fourteen healthy subjects performed four standardized extension exercises (dynamic trunk extension, dynamic-static trunk extension, dynamic leg extension, dynamic-static leg extension) in randomized order at an intensity of 60% of 1-RM (one repetition maximum). Surface EMG signals of Latissimus dorsi (LD), Longissimus thoracis pars thoracic (LTT) and lumborum (LTL), Iliocostalis lumborum pars thoracic (ILT) and lumborum (ILL), lumbar Multifidus (LM) and Gluteus Maximus (GM) were measured during the various exercises. Subsequently, EMG root mean square values were calculated and compared between trunk and leg extension exercises, as well as between a dynamic and dynamic-static performance using mixed model analysis. During the dynamic exercises a 2 second concentric contraction was followed by a 2 second eccentric contraction, whereas in the dynamic-static performance, a 5 second isometric interval was added in between the concentric and eccentric contraction phase.

Results

In general, the muscles of the posterior chain were recruited on a higher level during trunk extension (mean ± SD, 56.6 ± 30.8%MVC) compared to leg extension (47.4 ± 30.3%MVC) (p ≤ 0.001). No significant differences were found in mean muscle activity between dynamic and dynamic-static performances (p = 0.053). The thoracic muscles (LTT and ILT) were recruited more during trunk extension (64.9 ± 27.1%MVC) than during leg extension (54.2 ± 22.1%MVC) (p = 0.045) without significant differences in activity between both muscles (p = 0.138). There was no significant differences in thoracic muscle usage between the dynamic or dynamic-static performance of the extension exercises (p = 0.574).

Lumbar muscle activity (LTT, ILL, LM) was higher during trunk extension (70.6 ± 22.2%MVC) compared to leg extension (61.7 ± 27.0%MVC) (p = 0.047). No differences in myoelectric activity between the lumbar muscles could be demonstrated during the extension exercises (p = 0.574). During each exercise the LD (19.2 ± 13.9%MVC) and GM (28.2 ± 14.6%MVC) were recruited significantly less than the thoracic and lumbar muscles.

Conclusion

The recruitment of the posterior muscle chain during different types of extension exercises was influenced by the moving body part, but not by the type of contraction. All muscle groups were activated at a higher degree during trunk extension compared to leg extension. Based on the recruitment level of the different muscles, all exercises can be used to improve the endurance capacity of thoracic muscles, however for improvement of lumbar muscle endurance leg extension exercises seem to be more appropriate. To train the endurance capacity of the LD and GM extension exercises are not appropriate.

Insights into the neural control of eccentric contractions

The purpose of this brief review is to examine our current knowledge of the neural control of eccentric contractions. The review focuses on three main issues. The first issue considers the ability of individuals to activate muscles maximally during eccentric contractions. Most studies indicate that, regardless of the experimental approach (surface EMG amplitude, twitch superimposition, and motor unit recordings), it is usually more difficult to achieve full activation of a muscle by voluntary command during eccentric contractions than during concentric and isometric contractions. The second issue is related to the specificity of the control strategy used by the central nervous system during submaximal eccentric contractions. This part underscores that although the central nervous system appears to employ a single size-related strategy to activate motoneurons during the different types of contractions, the discharge rate of motor units is less during eccentric contractions across different loading conditions. The last issue addresses the mechanisms that produce this specific neural activation. This section indicates that neural adjustments at both supraspinal and spinal levels contribute to the specific modulation of voluntary activation during eccentric contractions. Although the available information on the control of eccentric contractions has increased during the last two decades, this review indicates that the exact mechanisms underlying the unique neural modulation observed in this type of contraction at spinal and supraspinal levels remains unknown and their understanding represents, therefore, a major challenge for future research on this topic.

Electromyographic normalization procedures for determining exercise intensity of closed chain exercises for strengthening the quadriceps femoris muscles

The purpose of this study was to compare the electromyographic (EMG) amplitudes of the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscles during a maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) to submaximal and maximal dynamic concentric contractions during active exercises. A secondary purpose was to provide information about the type of contraction that may be most appropriate for normalization of EMG data if one wants to determine if a lower extremity closed chain exercise is of sufficient intensity to produce a strengthening response for the QF muscles. Sixty-eight young healthy volunteers (39 female, 29 male) with no lower extremity pain or injury participated in the study. Surface electrodes recorded EMG amplitudes from the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO), rectus femoris (RF), and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles during 5 different isometric and dynamic concentric exercises. The last 27 subjects performed an additional 4 exercises from which a second data set could be analyzed. Maximum isokinetic knee extension and moderate to maximum closed chain exercises activated the QF significantly more than a MVIC. A 40-cm. lateral step-up exercise produced EMG amplitudes of the QF muscles of similar magnitude as the maximum isokinetic knee extension exercises and would be an exercise that could be considered for strengthening the QF muscles. Most published EMG studies of exercises for the QF have been performed by comparing EMG amplitudes during dynamic exercises to a MVIC. This procedure can lead one to overestimate the value of a dynamic exercise for strengthening the QF muscles. We suggest that when studying the efficacy of a dynamic closed chain exercise for strengthening the QF muscles, the exercise be normalized to a dynamic maximum muscle contraction such as that obtained with knee extension during isokinetic testing.

Spectral properties of electromyographic and mechanomyographic signals during dynamic concentric and eccentric contractions of the human biceps brachii muscle

The purpose of this study was to describe and examine the variations in recruitment patterns of motor units (MUs) in biceps brachii (BB) through a range of joint motion during dynamic eccentric and concentric contractions. Twelve healthy participants (6 females, 6 males, age=30±8.5 years) performed concentric and eccentric contractions with constant external loading at different levels. Surface electromyography (EMG) and mechanomyography (MMG) were recorded from BB. The EMGs and MMGs were decomposed into their intensities in time-frequency space using a wavelet technique. The EMG and MMG spectra were then compared using principal component analysis. Variations in total intensity, first principal component (PCI), and the angle θ formed by first component (PCI) and second component (PCII) loading scores were explained in terms of MU recruitment patterns and elbow angles. Elbow angle had a significant effect on dynamic concentric and eccentric contractions. The EMG total intensity was greater for concentric than for eccentric contractions in the present study. MMG total intensity, however, was lower during concentric than during eccentric contractions. In addition, there was no significant difference in θ between concentric and eccentric contractions for both EMG and MMG. Selective recruitment of fast MUs from BB muscle during eccentric muscle contractions was not found in the present study.

Specific modulation of corticospinal and spinal excitabilities during maximal voluntary isometric, shortening and lengthening contractions in synergist muscles

This study was designed to investigate the cortical and spinal mechanisms involved in the modulations of neural activation during lengthening compared with isometric and shortening maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs). Two muscles susceptible to different neural adjustments at the spinal level, the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG), were compared. Twelve healthy males participated in at least two experimental sessions designed to assess corticospinal and spinal excitabilities. We compared the modulation of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in response to transcranial magnetic stimulation and Hoffmann reflexes (H-reflexes) during isometric and anisometric MVCs. The H-reflex and MEP responses, recorded during lengthening and shortening MVCs, were compared with those obtained during isometric MVCs. The results indicate that the maximal amplitude of both MEP and H-reflex in the SOL were smaller (P < 0.01) during lengthening MVCs compared with isometric and shortening MVCs but similar (P > 0.05) in MG for all three muscle contraction types. The silent period that follows maximal MEPs was reduced (P < 0.01) during lengthening MVCs in the SOL but not the MG. Similar observations were obtained regardless of the initial length of the MG muscle. Collectively, the current results indicate that the relative contribution of both cortical and spinal mechanisms to the modulation of neural activation differs during lengthening MVCs and between two synergist muscles. The comparison of SOL and MG responses further suggests that the specific modulation of the corticospinal excitability during lengthening MVCs depends mainly on pre- and postsynaptic inhibitory mechanisms acting at the spinal level.

Metabolic fuels: regulating fluxes to select mix

Animals must regulate the fluxes of multiple fuels to support changing metabolic rates that result from variation in physiological circumstances. The aim of fuel selection strategies is to exploit the advantages of individual substrates while minimizing the impact of disadvantages. All exercising mammals share a general pattern of fuel selection: at the same %V(O(2,max)) they oxidize the same ratio of lipids to carbohydrates. However, highly aerobic species rely more on intramuscular fuels because energy supply from the circulation is constrained by trans-sarcolemmal transfer. Fuel selection is performed by recruiting different muscles, different fibers within the same muscles or different pathways within the same fibers. Electromyographic analyses show that shivering humans can modulate carbohydrate oxidation either through the selective recruitment of type II fibers within the same muscles or by regulating pathway recruitment within type I fibers. The selection patterns of shivering and exercise are different: at the same %V(O(2,max)), a muscle producing only heat (shivering) or significant movement (exercise) strikes a different balance between lipid and carbohydrate oxidation. Long-distance migrants provide an excellent model to characterize how to increase maximal substrate fluxes. High lipid fluxes are achieved through the coordinated upregulation of mobilization, transport and oxidation by activating enzymes, lipid-solubilizing proteins and membrane transporters. These endurance athletes support record lipolytic rates in adipocytes, use lipoprotein shuttles to accelerate transport and show increased capacity for lipid oxidation in muscle mitochondria. Some migrant birds use dietary omega-3 fatty acids as performance-enhancing agents to boost their ability to process lipids. These dietary fatty acids become incorporated in membrane phospholipids and bind to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors to activate membrane proteins and modify gene expression.

Motor unit discharge rates of the anconeus muscle during high-velocity elbow extensions

Motor unit recruitment and motor unit discharge rate (MUDR) have been widely studied in isometric conditions but minimally during velocity-dependent contractions. For isometric contractions, surface electromyography (EMG) activity of the elbow extensors plateaus at near maximal torques (Le Bozec et al. 1980; Le Bozec and Maton 1982). One study (Maton and Bouisset 1975) recorded single motor unit (MU) activity at maximal velocities; however, only the rate of the first interspike interval (ISI) was reported and likely was not representative of the average MUDR of the MU train. The purpose was to calculate average MUDRs of the anconeus during loaded velocity-dependent contractions from zero velocity (isometric) up to maximal velocity (V(max25)) through a large range of motion. A Biodex dynamometer was used to record elbow extension torque, position, and velocity. Single MU potentials were collected from the anconeus with intramuscular EMG, and surface EMG was sampled from the lateral head of the triceps brachii during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVCs) and velocity-dependent contractions loaded at 25% MVC over 120° range of motion at five target velocities (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%V(max25)). Elbow extension velocities ranged from 93 to 494°/s and average MUDR ranged from 11.8 Hz at 25%MVC to 39.0 Hz at 100%V(max25.) Overall average MUDRs increased as a function of velocity, although the root mean square of triceps brachii surface EMG plateaued at 50%V(max25). Piecewise regression analysis revealed two distinct linear ranges each described by a unique equation, suggesting that MUDRs of the anconeus enter a secondary range of firing, characterized by a steeper slope as velocity approaches maximum.
