Infant Massage and Quality of Early Mother-Infant Interactions: Are There Associations with Maternal Psychological Wellbeing, Marital Quality, and Social Support?

Infant massage programs have proved to be effective in enhancing post-natal development of highly risk infants, such as preterm newborns and drug or HIV exposed children. Less studies have focused on the role of infant massage in supporting the co-construction of early adult-child relationships. In line with this lack of literature, the present paper reports on a pilot study aimed at investigating longitudinally the quality of mother-child interactions, with specific reference to emotional availability (EA), in a group of mother-child pairs involved in infant massage classes. Moreover, associations between mother-child EA, maternal wellbeing, marital adjustment, and social support were also investigated, with the hypothesis to find a link between low maternal distress, high couple satisfaction and high perceived support and interactions of better quality in the dyads. The study involved 20 mothers and their children, aged between 2 and 7 months, who participated to infant massage classes. The assessment took place at three stages: at the beginning of massage course, at the end of it and at 1-month follow-up. At the first stage of assessment self-report questionnaires were administered to examine the presence of maternal psychiatric symptoms (SCL-90-R), perceived social support (MSPSS), and marital adjustment (Dyadic Adjustment Scale); dyadic interactions were observed and rated with the Emotional Availability Scales (Biringen, 2008) at each stage of data collection. The results showed a significant improvement in the quality of mother-child interactions, between the first and the last evaluation, parallel to the unfolding of the massage program, highlighting a general increase in maternal and child's EA. The presence of maternal psychological distress resulted associated with less optimal mother-child emotional exchanges, while the hypothesis regarding couple satisfaction and social support influence were not confirmed. These preliminary results, if replicated, seem to sustain the usefulness of infant massage and the importance of focusing on early mother-infant interactions.

Supporting fathering through infant massage

Fathers may feel dissatisfied with their ability to form a close attachment with their infants in the early postpartum period, which, in turn, may increase their parent-related stress. Our study sought to determine if an infant massage intervention assisted fathers with decreasing stress and increasing bonding with their infants during this time. To address the complex father-infant relationship, we conducted a pilot study using a mixed methodology approach. Twelve infant-father dyads participated in the intervention, and 12 infant-father dyads populated a wait-list control group. Paternal stress was measured using the Parenting Stress Index at baseline and at postintervention. We found infant massage instruction significantly decreased paternal stress. Our findings were also supported by the qualitative data and suggest fathers may benefit from applied postnatal education.

Paternal Care May Influence Perceptions of Paternal Resemblance

Father-child resemblance is increasingly attracting attention from researchers interested in studying paternal investment. The current study sought to determine whether a quasi-experimental infant massage intervention would increase father's perceptions of resemblance. The study included a dozen fathers in each of two groups: the first received an intensive series of lessons on infant-father massage along with their infants, while the second group served as a neutral control. We failed to find significant correlations between paternal investment and resemblance, but we found that fathers who participated in the infant massage intervention reported significantly larger post-study ratings of resemblance and lower ratings of paternal stress. This suggests that the relationship between father-child resemblance and paternal investment may be bidirectional.

Exploring a massage intervention for parents and their children with autism: the implications for bonding and attachment

This exploratory study aimed to address two questions: (1) What does touch mean between parents and their children with autism on completion of a massage intervention? (2) Do parents feel that their relationship with their children has changed on completion of a massage intervention? Fourteen parents agreed to be interviewed. Data were collected before the massage intervention (baseline), immediately after the massage intervention and 16 weeks from baseline and were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. At baseline, parents felt distressed that they felt unable to get 'close' to their children. After the intervention, parents reported feeling physically and emotionally closer to their children. Children expressed a range of cues to initiate massage at home. These benefits were maintained at follow-up for parents who continued to use massage at home. In conclusion, giving massage to children with autism may help to enhance the emotional bond between parent and child.

A reflective overview of complementary therapies for children 1995–2005

This article considers briefly how and why complementary and alternative medicine has developed in children's care during the last 10 years. Some of the therapies utilised by children are discussed, similarities and differences to trends in CAM for adults highlighted and a potential role for CAM in children's care in the future, suggested.

A training and support programme for caregivers of children with disabilities: an exploratory study

Our aim was to conduct an exploratory evaluation of an intervention designed to equip caregivers with simple massage skills that they could use with their children in the home. The sample comprised 82 parents and 82 children with disabilities. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires at two points in time: baseline, and immediately post-programme (after 8 weeks). Qualitative data were collected through Home Record Sheets and Monitoring Forms completed by caregivers and therapists, respectively. Results revealed statistically significant improvements in caregivers' self-efficacy in their ability to conduct massage, in managing children's psychosocial wellbeing and in levels of anxious mood. Caregiver reports of children's sleeping patterns and eating showed significant improvements. Qualitative data confirmed that caregivers believed that children's sleep patterns improved and also suggested improvements in children's bowel movements, awareness of their bodies, movement, and communication; factors that could be included in future evaluation.

A minority report: teaching fathers baby massage

Infant or baby massage has emerged in the recent decade as an activity promoted by health care professionals, popular with parents and the subject of a growing body of research evidence (Complement. Ther. Nurs. Midwifery 2 (1996) 151; 3 & 8 Tough Ther. 2000). This paper reports on the experience of establishing and facilitating baby massage training. There is a focus in the discussion on teaching fathers, as only one male parent attended the classes over a 6-month period. Recommendations are made in the conclusion, identifying possible ways of promoting fathers involvement in babies massage. The paper, with its images of a father engaged in baby massage, is intended to add to the current limited amount of literature available on this subject.

Positive Touch and massage in the neonatal unit: a British approach

There is now a general trend towards a more baby friendly, family centred approach in the Neonatal Unit. Aspects of that approach-including positive touch and massage- are gaining in popularity. This has caused much debate due to the ambiguity surrounding the implementation and validity of the interventions. Here the impact of these complementary practices (not to be confused with complementary therapies) is discussed. A review of the author's approach and potential guidelines for implementation is provided.

Critical review of how nurses research massage therapy: are they using the best methods?

Complementary therapies comprise only a fraction of nursing care, yet it is interesting that their use is being considered by an ever-increasing number of nurses. Within the Rhondda NHS Trust, holistic massage therapy is offered to patients both in hospital and in the community, nurses and occupational therapists successfully combining their massage skills with everyday patient care. During the process of devising a research protocol for implementation within the Trust, certain questions began to emerge to which there were no answers. The attempt to answer them is the origin of this paper, which explores some commonly experienced difficulties with reference to the literature and puts forward merits of adapting current methodology to investigate the benefits of massage therapy.
