Abstract
Methamphetamine (MA) is a highly addictive mental stimulant, and MA abuse remains a significant public health problem worldwide, while effective treatment options are limited. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), a major effective component extracted from Lycium barbarum, has potential health-promoting effects on the nervous system; however, its role in MA dependence remains unclear. In this study, the conditioned place preference (CPP) of MA addiction in adult male mice was established to detect changes in gut microbiota profiles after LBP treatment through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results found that LBP administration could alleviate MA-induced CPP and hyperactivity. Interestingly, LBP improved MA-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis by increasing some beneficial autochthonous genus abundances, such as Allobaculum, Gordonibacter, and Ileibacterium. MA exposure induced the co-occurrence network of intestinal microbiota to become weaker and more unstable when compared with the control group, while LBP changed the above effects when compared with the MA group. Bacterial gene function prediction showed that amphetamine addiction, cocaine addiction, and short-chain fatty acid metabolism were enriched. These findings reveal that LBP might regulate MA-induced gut microbiota and behavior changes, which showed potential therapeutic applicability in treating MA addiction by regulating the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Aging is a major risk factor for the development of many pathological processes, such as reduced immunity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases or neurodegenerative diseases, while age-related chronic diseases are the most common causes of death. This paper studies the effects of American ginseng saponin Rb1 and Re alone and combined intervention on the immune system of aging mouse models, by using 30 mg/kg Rb1, 15 mg/kg Re, and Rb1 + Re (30 mg/kg Rb1 and 15 mg/kg Re (co-intervention) was used to intervene in the aging model, and immune indicators such as thymus index, spleen index, interleukin and interferon were detected to evaluate the impact of Rb1 and Re on immune function. The results show that Rb1 and Re intervention alone can increase the spleen index by 7%-12% and the thymus index by 12%-19% in the aging model. After Rb1 or Re alone intervened, the apoptotic cells in the thymus were slightly reduced, and the proportion of apoptotic cells was reduced. The combination of Rb1 + Re can promote the thymus index and spleen index to increase by 23.40% and 25.5% respectively, which is more advantageous than Rb1 or Re alone. In addition, Rb1 and Re intervention can reduce the level of interferon INF to a level comparable to that of young mice. Rb1 + Re can not only reduce the INF content, but also reduce the TNF content. The above results show that American ginseng saponin Rb1 and Re can delay the decline of the immune system in the aging model, and the combined intervention of the two is significantly better than individual intervention in the recovery of the immune system. This paper can provide theoretical basis and data support for the development of American ginseng nutritional supplements and its application in aging groups products to improve immunity.

Abstract
Prediabetes is a critical stage characterized by insulin resistance. Morus nigra L., an edible plant, is widely used in food and nutritive supplements and exhibits various pharmacological activities; however, its therapeutic effects and mechanisms on prediabetes have rarely been reported. In this research, the major components of total flavonoids of M. nigra L. (TFM) were identified, and TFM treatment was found to reduce prediabetes progressing to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from 93.75 to 18.75%. The microbiota and next-generation sequencing combined with western blotting in vivo and in vitro demonstrated that TFM and its components ameliorated insulin resistance mediated by the suppressor of cytokine signaling and protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B, which benefited by maintaining intestinal homeostasis and restraining plasma levels of inflammatory factors. This study confirmed the T2DM prevention effect of TFM and revealed the underlying mechanism, setting the stage for the design of functional foods for diabetes prevention.

Abstract
Dendrobium officinale is a traditional Chinese medicine for treating gastrointestinal diseases by nourishing “Yin” and thickening the stomach lining. To study whether D. officinale endophytes can colonize the intestinal tract and regulate gut microbiota in mice, we used autoclave steam sterilizing and 60Co-γ radiation to eliminate D. officinale endophytes from its juice. Then, high-throughput ITS1-ITS2 rDNA and 16S rRNA gene amplicons were sequenced to analyze the microbial community of D. officinale endophytes and fecal samples of mice after administration of fresh D. officinale juice. Sterilization of D. officinale juice by autoclaving for 40 min (ASDO40) could more effectively eliminate the D. officinale endophytes and decrease their interference on the gut microbiota. D. officinale juice could increase beneficial gut microbiota and metabolites including short-chain fatty acids. D. officinale endophytes Pseudomonas mosselii, Trichocladium asperum, Titata maxilliformis, Clonostachys epichloe, and Rhodotorula babjevae could colonize the intestinal tract of mice and modulate gut microbiota after oral administration of the juice for 28 days. Thus, the regulatory effect of D. officinale juice on gut microbiota was observed, which provides a basis for inferring that D. officinale endophytes might colonize the intestinal tract and participate in regulating gut microbiota to treat diseases. Thus, this study further provides a new approach for the treatment of diseases by colonizing plant endophytes in the intestinal tract and regulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), essential amino acids for the human body, are mainly obtained from food. High levels of BCAAs in circulation are considered as potential markers of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in humans. However, there are conflicting reports about the effects of supplement of BCAAs on MAFLD, and research on BCAAs and gut microbiota is not comprehensive. Here, C57BL/6J mice were fed with a high-fat diet with or without BCAAs to elucidate the effects of BCAAs on the gut microbiota and metabolic functions in a mouse model of MAFLD. Compared to high-fat diet (HFD) feeding, BCAA supplementation significantly reduced the mouse body weight, ratio of liver/body weight, hepatic lipid accumulation, serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and the expressions of the lipogenesis-related enzymes Fas, Acc, and Scd-1 and increased expressions of the lipolysis-related enzymes Cpt1A and Atgl in the liver. BCAAs supplementation also counteracted HFD-induced elevations in serum BCAAs levels by stimulating the enzymatic activity of BCKDH. Furthermore, BCAAs supplementation markedly improved the gut bacterial diversity and altered the gut microbiota composition and abundances, especially those of genera, in association with MAFLD and BCAAs metabolism. These data suggest that BCAA treatment improves HFD-induced MAFLD through mechanisms involving intestinal microbes.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-diabetic effect of CGSGCG and its beneficial effects on gut microbiota in type 2 diabetes (T2D) mice induced by streptozotocin and high sucrose and high fat diet. The results showed that treatment with CGSGCG reduced fasting blood glucose, improved oral glucose tolerance test, protected the liver from injury, and reduced inflammation in T2D mice. The contents of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid and isovaleric acid in CGSGCG group were 2.49-, 1.74-, 3.31-, 1.93-, 1.36- and 1.30-fold than that of the model group. Moreover, administration of CGSGCG up-regulated the expression of INSR/IRS-1/PI3K/AKT/GLUT4 and mTOR but down-regulated the P38MAPK expression. Furthermore, the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Verrucomicrobia, Proteobacteria, Osillibacter, Dubosiella and Lactococcus in intestinal tract increased, indicating that CGSCGG regulated and improved the bacterial community structure of T2D mice, which were closely related to glycometabolism.

Effect of Fresh Dendrobe Juice Consumption on Senile Habitual Constipation for Older People: A Four-Week Randomized Controlled Trial. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
Background: In Chinese medicine, it is believed that fresh dendrobe juice, which is mild in nature, can relieve the symptom of constipation. Methods: A pilot research design was conducted. Fifty-six older people with senile habitual constipation were recruited and randomly enrolled into control or experimental groups, each with 28 people. The control group was offered water routinely in a day. In addition, the experimental group received 125 mL of dendrobe juice twice a day for four weeks. Quality of life for the old people was evaluated by the Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life (PAC-QOL) Score and the symptom of constipation was assessed by Wexner score. Results: The four-week intervention brought significant performance improvement in all the measured parameters in the experimental group in comparison with the control group. These included significantly more frequency and shorter durations of defecation (p < 0.01, respectively), improved quality of life based on constipation score (PAC-QOL) (experimental group: 50.41 ± 3.46 vs. control group: 70.25 ± 2.35; p < 0.05), and improved score on the Wexner constipation scale (experimental group: 6.56 ± 0.89 vs. control group: 15.50 ± 0.64; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Fresh dendrobe beverage therapy is effective in improving stool frequency, reducing duration of defecation, and enhancing quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medicinal dendrobiums are used popularly in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of diabetes, while their active compounds and mechanism remain unclear. This review aimed to evaluate the mechanism and active compounds of medicinal dendrobiums in diabetes management through a systematic approach. METHODS A systematic approach was conducted to search for the mechanism and active phytochemicals in Dendrobium responsible for anti-diabetic actions using databases PubMed, Embase, and SciFinder. RESULTS Current literature indicates polysaccharides, bibenzyls, phenanthrene, and alkaloids are commonly isolated in Dendrobium genusin which polysaccharides and bibenzyls are most aboundant. Many animal studies have shown that polysaccharides from the species of Dendrobium provide with antidiabetic effects by lowering glucose level and reversing chronic inflammation of T2DM taken orally at 200 mg/kg. Dendrobium polysaccharides protect pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance in liver. Dendrobium polysaccharides up-regulate the abundance of short-chain fatty acid to stimulate GLP-1 secretion through gut microbiota. Bibenzyls also have great potency to inhibit the progression of the chronic inflammation in cellular studies. CONCLUSION Polysaccharides and bibenzyls are the major active compounds in medicinal dendrobiums for diabetic management through the mechanisms of lowering glucose level and reversing chronic inflammation of T2DM by modulating pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance in liver as a result from gut microbita regulation.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects and molecular mechanisms of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides on gastric mucosal injuries. Following one week of continuous intragastric administration, a gastric mucosal injury model was established using intragastric administration of anhydrous ethanol. The area of gastric ulcer was measured, the contents of interleukin- 6 (IL-6), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and thyroid transcription factor 1 (TFF-1) in serum were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the expressions of EGFR, TFF-1, IL-6, Raf-2, MAP kinase kinase 1 (MEK1), MEK2, and ERK1 in the gastric tissue were determined utilizing qPCR, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Simultaneously, Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides and anhydrous ethanol were added to the gastric mucosal cells (GES1) cultured in vitro, and the protective effects of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides on cell viability was detected using Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8. The addition of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides markedly improved the gastric epithelial defect, inflammatory cell infiltration, and redness and swelling stemmed from gastric mucosal injuries and greatly reduced the area of gastric ulcer. The inhibition rates of gastric ulcer were 48.12 ± 2.98, 42.95 ± 1.52, and 27.96 ± 2.05% in the high, medium, and low concentration Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide groups, respectively. Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides could increase the expressions of EGFR and TFF-1 and decrease the expressions of IL-6, Raf-2, MEK1, MEK2, and ERK1. Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides could reduce the level of inflammatory factors and protect gastric mucosa by inhibiting the expression of MAPK pathway genes and proteins.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a noteworthy worldwide public health problem. It represents a complex metabolic disorder, mainly characterized as hyperglycemia and lipid dysfunction. The gut microbiota dysbiosis has been proposed to play a role in the development of diabetes. Recently, there has been considerable interest in the use of medicine food homology (MFH) and functional food herbs (FF) to ameliorate diabetes and lead to a natural and healthy life. Hence, this review compiles some reports and findings to demonstrate that the practical use of the MFH/FF can modulate the homoeostasis of gut microbiota, thereby ameliorating the development of T2DM. The results provided useful data to support further investigation of the functional basis and application of MFH/FF to treat T2DM through maintaining intestinal homeostasis.

Abstract
Dendrobium officinale, a well-known plant used as a medicinal and food homologous product, has been reported to contain various bioactive components, such as polysaccharides, bibenzyls, phenanthrenes, and flavonoids. It is also widely used as a traditional medicine to strengthen “Yin”, nourish heart, tonify five viscera, remove arthralgia, relieve fatigue, thicken stomach, lighten body, and prolong life span. These traditional applications are in consistent with modern pharmacological studies, which have demonstrated that D. officinale exhibits various biological functions, such as cardioprotective, anti-tumor, gastrointestinal protective, anti-diabetes, immunomodulatory, anti-aging, and anti-osteoporosis effects. In this review, we summarize the research progress of D. officinale from November 2016 to May 2021 and aim to better understand the botany, traditional use, phytochemistry, and pharmacology of D. officinale, as well as its quality control and safety. This work presents the development status of D. officinale, analyzes gaps in the current research on D. officinale, and raises the corresponding solutions to provide references and potential directions for further studies of D. officinale.

Abstract
A novel gold nanoparticle (Do-AuNP) was successfully synthesized from water extracts of traditional Chinese medicine Dendrobium officinale (DO) without using any extra chemicals regents. The physicochemical properties of Do-AuNPs were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The amount of DO extract on the AuNPs was about 13%. In order to evaluate the anti-tumor efficiency and biosafety, the inhibitory rate of HepG2 cells and survival rate of L02 cells were performed in vitro, and the immunohistochemical analysis of H&E, Ki-67, and TUNEL staining were conducted in vivo. Our results demonstrated that Do-AuNP had better anti-tumor efficiency compared with DO extraction alone without increasing toxicity in vivo and in vitro. The present study provides useful information for Do-AuNP as a new nanomedicine for liver cancer.

Abstract
On January 2, 2020, The National Health Commission and the State Administration for Market Regulation listed Panacis Quinquefolii Radix (PQR) as a medicinal and food homologous product. PQR is the dry root of Panax quinquefolium L., which has the functions of replenishing qi and nourishing Yin, clearing heat and producing body fluid. It is often used for qi deficiency and Yin deficiency, heat exhaustion, asthma and phlegm, dry mouth and pharynx. PQR is sweet, slightly bitter and cool in nature, and enter the heart, lung and kidney meridian exerts the remedial and hygienical effect. At present, active components such as saponins, flavonoids, fatty acids, polyalkynes, volatile oils and other nutrients such as amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins and trace elements have been isolated from PQR. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that PQR has the effects of hypoglycemic, antihypertensive, anti fatigue, anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective and so on. In addition, PQR is recognized as a health care product to strengthen the body and dispel diseases. It is not only the raw material of Traditional Chinese medicine preparations, but also the treasure of dietary therapy and herbal cuisine. This study not only reviewed the botany, phytochemistry and pharmacology of PQR, but also summarized its quality control, toxicity and industrial applications for the first time. This paper not only summarizes the development status of PQR, but also analyzes the shortcomings of the current research on PQR, and puts forward the corresponding solutions, in order to provide reference for future scholars to study PQR.
