Approaching ethical reasoning in nursing research through a communitarian perspective

Research ethics in global mental health: advancing culturally responsive mental health research

Global mental health research is needed to inform effective and efficient services and policy interventions within and between countries. Ethical reflection should accompany all GMHR and human resource capacity endeavors to ensure high standards of respect for participants and communities and to raise public debate leading to changes in policies and regulations. The views and circumstances of ethno-cultural and disadvantaged communities in the Majority and Minority world need to be considered to enhance scientific merit, public awareness, and social justice. The same applies to people with vulnerabilities yet who are simultaneously capable, such as children and youth. The ethical principles of respect for persons or autonomy, beneficence/non-maleficence, justice, and relationality require careful contextualization for research involving human beings. Building on the work of Fisher and colleagues (2002), this article highlights some strategies to stimulate the ethical conduct of global mental health research and to guide decision-making for culturally responsible research, such as developing culturally sensitive informed consent and disclosure policies and procedures; paying special attention to socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental risks and benefits; and ensuring meaningful community and individual participation. Research and capacity-building partnerships, political will, and access to resources are needed to stimulate global mental health research and consolidate ethical practice.

Mind the gaps in ethical regulations of nursing research

The introduction of and the commitment to evidence-based nursing in all care settings have led to a rapid increase of intervention and outcome-based research programs. Yet, the topics of nursing research are not only affected by interventions and outcomes but also affected by the concept of caring derived from humanistic philosophy. Considering this twofold orientation of nursing science, nuanced ethical regulations for nursing research programs are called for. In addition to the different research approaches, further arguments for ethical regulations are as follows: first, the different degrees of contextualization and the variety of participation models regarding the target groups; second, the capacities and opportunities of participants; and third, the caring relationship between nurses and research subjects. To capture these special features of nursing science, four approaches to fill the gaps in existing ethical regulations for nursing research are proposed: (a) process orientation, (b) community orientation, (c) context orientation, and (d) relation orientation.

Ethical multiculturalism: an evolutionary concept analysis

A concept analysis of ethical multiculturalism using Rogers' evolutionary approach is presented. It includes attributes, antecedents, and consequences of ethical multiculturalism. Attributes include moral reasoning, cultural competence, beneficence/nonmaleficence, and respect for persons and communities. Antecedents are culture knowledge; cultural awareness, sensitivity, encounters, and skill; and understanding of ethical principles. Consequences include protection of human subjects, preservation of cultural norms, dignity of participants and communities, and perceived value by individuals and communities. Ethical multiculturalism is defined as the use of moral reasoning to apply the ethical principles of beneficence and respect for persons and communities in a culturally competent manner to research in various societies or cultures.

Bench-to-bedside review: Ethical challenges for those in directing roles in critical care units

Though much attention in the medical literature has focused on the ethics of critical care, it seems to be disproportionately weighted toward clinical issues. On the presumption that the operational management of an intensive care unit (ICU) also requires ethical considerations, it would be useful to know what these are. This review undertook to identify what literature exists with regard to the non-clinical issues of ethical importance in the ICU as encountered by clinician-managers. We found that in addition to issues of resource allocation, there exist many areas of ethical importance to clinician-managers in the ICU that have been described only superficially. We argue that a renewed focus on ICU ethics is merited to shed light on these other, non-clinical, issues.
