Abstract
We aimed to systematically review and synthesize the available evidence regarding the link between dietary patterns and insomnia symptoms among the general population using observational studies. We reviewed 16,455 references, of which 37 studies met inclusion criteria with a total sample size of 591,223. There was a significant association of the Mediterranean diet (OR: 0.86; 95 % CI, 0.79, 0.93; P < 0.001; I2 = 32.68 %), a high-quality diet (OR: 0.66; 95 % CI, 0.48, 0.90; P = 0.010; I2 = 84.62 %), and an empirically-derived healthy dietary pattern (OR: 0.91; 95 % CI, 0.85, 0.98; P = 0.010; I2 = 57.14 %) with a decreased risk of insomnia symptoms. Moreover, the dietary glycemic index (OR: 1.16; 95 % CI, 1.08, 1.25; P < 0.001; I2 = 0.0 %), the dietary glycemic load (OR: 1.10; 95 % CI, 1.01, 1.20; P = 0.032; I2 = 74.36 %), and an empirically-derived unhealthy dietary pattern (OR: 1.20; 95 % CI, 1.01, 1.42; P = 0.040; I2 = 68.38 %) were linked with a higher risk of insomnia symptoms. Most individual studies were of good quality (NOS) but provided very low certainty of evidence (GRADE). Consistent data reveals that following healthy diets is associated with decreased insomnia symptoms prevalence, while adherence to an unhealthy pattern is associated with an increased prevalence of insomnia symptoms.

Abstract
Introduction Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and obesity commonly coexist. Weight loss and exercise are recommended management options for OSA. However, most of the current evidence on diet and OSA is focused on calorie restriction rather than diet quality. The aim of the present study was to determine the association of plant-based dietary indices (PDI) with OSA risk. Methods Cross-sectional data from 14 210 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who provided dietary information using the 24-hour recall method were used. PDI - including healthy (hPDI), unhealthy (uPDI) and pro-vegetarian diet index (PVDI) - were determined. OSA risk was determined using the STOP-BANG questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between dietary indices and OSA risk. Results Higher adherence to PDI (odds ratio (OR)Q5 versus Q1=0.81; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.66-1.00), hPDI (OR=0.83; 95% CI: 0.69-1.01) and PVDI (OR=0.84; 95% CI: 0.68-1.05) was inversely associated with OSA risk, whereas higher consumption of an unhealthy plant-based diet (OR=1.22; 95% CI: 1.00-1.49) was positively associated with OSA. Sex differences in estimates were observed for PDI in males (OR=0.71; 95% CI: 0.56-0.90) versus females (OR=0.93; 95% CI: 0.68-1.28), hPDI in males (OR=0.90; 95% CI: 0.68-1.18) versus females (OR=0.77; 95% CI: 0.54-1.09) and uPDI in males (OR=1.13; 95% CI: 0.89-1.44) versus females (OR=1.42; 95% CI: 1.03-1.97) but not for PVDI. Conclusions Higher adherence to a healthy plant-based diet is associated with reduced OSA risk, while an unhealthy plant-based diet has a positive association. The magnitude of these associations differs by sex. Further longitudinal studies are warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the association between insomnia and obesity in Mexican adults aged 50 and older. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (2015-2018). Self-reported insomnia was measured using the modified insomnia severity index with scores ranging from zero to six. Obesity was categorized using body mass index (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). We used generalized estimating equations to assess the association between insomnia and obesity over three years. RESULTS Insomnia was associated with obesity (odds ratio [OR]: 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01,1.11), among those with no obesity at baseline. Among those with obesity, insomnia was not associated with changes in BMI. Lastly, obesity was not associated with changes in insomnia symptoms. CONCLUSION This work highlights the association between insomnia and obesity among older Mexican adults and demonstrates the importance of further studies on the effects of insomnia within this population.

Abstract
Dietary habits have been associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that adherence to dietary patterns may be associated with Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and OSA severity and that insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation may act as potential mediators of these associations. This was a cross-sectional study among 269 adult participants with polysomnography-diagnosed moderate-to-severe OSA. Dietary and physical activity habits were assessed through validated questionnaires, and biochemical, inflammatory, and oxidative stress markers were measured for all volunteers. Dietary patterns were identified using principal component analysis, and mediation analyses was also performed. A "Western-type" dietary pattern (characterized by high intakes of full-fat dairy, refined grains, potatoes, red meat, sweets, salty snacks, and soft drinks and low intakes of low-fat dairy and whole grains) was positively associated with AHI. Mediation analyses also revealed that insulin resistance partially explained this association. In multivariable models controlling for age, sex, smoking, socioeconomic status, obesity presence, energy intake, and physical activity level, participants in the highest quartile of adherence to the Western-type dietary pattern had ∼3.5 times higher likelihood of suffering from severe OSA, compared with participants in the lowest quartile of adherence (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 3.45 [1.21-9.94], P trend across quartiles: 0.024). After further adjustment for Homeostasis Model of Assessment-Insulin Resistance and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, this association lost significance. Higher adherence to a less healthy, Western-type dietary pattern is positively associated with AHI and OSA severity, which may partially be mediated through insulin resistance.

Intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Nutrition 2023; 106:111908. Abstract
The aim of this review article was to evaluate the association between the intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Pubmed, LILACS, Scielo, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were searched on December 31, 2021, for studies that evaluated the association between ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes (self-reported sleep duration and quality). Pooled odds ratios were assessed through a random-effects model; heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic. Fifteen cross-sectional studies were included; 14 showed that the high intake of ultra-processed foods was statistically significantly associated with sleep-related outcomes (sleep duration and quality). In the crude analysis, compared with low intake, high intake of ultra-processed foods increased the odds of sleep-related outcomes, with increased odds among children and/or adolescents, and null results among adults. When adjusted for cofounders, we found statistically significant results for all ages. The high intake of ultra-processed foods was associated with sleep-related outcomes, with moderate credibility of the evidence. Longitudinal studies and clinical trials confirming these findings are necessary.

Abstract
Evidence on the association between dietary patterns and sleep disorders is limited and controversial. In addition, studies evaluating the effect of dietary patterns on sleep disorders have seldom considered the critical role of obesity. We aimed to explore obesity-related dietary patterns and evaluate their impact on sleep disorders using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005–2014. In total, 19,892 participants aged over 20 years with two-day dietary recalls were enrolled. Obesity-related dietary patterns explaining most variance in waist circumference and BMI simultaneously were extracted from twenty-six food groups by the using partial least squares method. Sleep disorder and sleep duration, which were defined by self-reported questions, were the primary and the secondary outcome, respectively. Generalized linear models were performed to estimate the association of sleep disorders and sleep duration with dietary patterns. Two types of dietary patterns were identified. The “high fats, refined grains, and meat” pattern was characterized by high intakes of solid fats, cured meat, potatoes, refined grains, meat, cheese, and added sugars. The “low whole grains, vegetables, and fruits” pattern was characterized by low intakes of oils, whole grains, nuts and seeds, milk, fruits, and several vegetables. Participants with the highest adherence to the “high fats, refined grains, and meat” pattern had a higher risk for sleep disorders (OR (95%CI): 1.43 (1.12, 1.84)) and shorter sleep duration (β (95%CI): −0.17 (−0.26, −0.08)) compared to those with the lowest adherence. The corresponding associations for the “low whole grains, vegetables, and fruits” pattern were only significant for sleep duration (β (95%CI): −0.26 (−0.37, −0.15)). Our results found that the dietary pattern characterized by high solid fats, cured meat, potatoes, refined grains, meat, cheese, and added sugars, was associated with a higher risk for sleep disorders and shorter sleep duration.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Most studies on diet and sleep apnea focus on calorie restriction. Here we investigate potential associations between dietary quality [healthy eating index (HEI), dietary inflammatory index (DII)] and overall healthy lifestyle with sleep apnea risk. METHODS National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (waves 2005-2008, and 2015-2018; N=14,210) were used to determine HEI, DII and their quintiles, with the fifth quintile indicating highest adherence to each dietary construct. A healthy lifestyle score was determined using diet, smoking, alcohol intake and physical activity level. STOP-BANG questionnaire was used to define sleep apnea risk. Generalized linear regression models with binomial family and logit link were used to investigate potential associations. The models were adjusted for socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors and chronic conditions. RESULTS Prevalence of high sleep apnea risk was 25.1%. Higher DII was positively associated with sleep apnea (odds ratio (OR)Q5 vs. Q1=1.55; 95% CI: 1.24-1.94; p for trend <0.001) whereas higher HEI was associated with reduced sleep apnea risk (ORQ5 VS. Q1=0.72: 0.59-0.88; p for trend=0.007). Higher healthy lifestyle score was also associated with decreased odds of sleep apnea (p for trend <0.001). There was a significant interaction between healthy lifestyle and sex with sleep apnea risk (p for interaction=0.049) whereby females with higher healthy lifestyle scores had lower risk of sleep apnea versus males. CONCLUSIONS Higher quality and anti-inflammatory diets and a healthier overall lifestyle are associated with lower sleep apnea risk. These findings underline the importance of strategies to improve overall diet quality and promote healthy behavior, not just calorie restriction, to reduce sleep apnea risk.

Abstract
Whether there is an association between dietary quality and sleep disorder in American adults is unclear. We conducted this study to analyze whether dietary quality, using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) scores as the measure, was associated with self-reported sleep disorders. Data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2014). Step-weighted logistic regression models were performed to explore the relationships between the HEI-2015 scores and sleep disorder. Weighted quantile sum regression model was used to identify the HEI-2015 components most strongly associated with sleep disorders. According to quartiles, HEI scores were categorized into inadequate (<25%), average (25–75%), and optimal (>75%). Compared to inadequate HEI status, average HEI status (OR: 0.961, 95%CI: 0.959–0.962) and optimal HEI status (OR: 0.913, 95% CI: 0.912–0.915) were associated with reduced risk of sleep disorder after multivariable adjustments. Greens and beans, added sugars, saturated fats, total vegetables and total protein foods were the top five important components for sleep disorders. Our results suggest that there is a statistically significant association between better dietary quality and reduced risk of sleep disorder among United States adults.

Abstract
Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a breathing disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of upper-airway collapse, resulting in intermittent hypoxia (IH) during sleep. Experimental studies with animals and cellular models have indicated that IH leads to attenuation of glucose-induced insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells and to enhancement of insulin resistance in peripheral tissues and cells, such as the liver (hepatocytes), adipose tissue (adipocytes), and skeletal muscles (myocytes), both of which could lead to obesity. Although obesity is widely recognized as a major factor in SAS, it is controversial whether the development of SAS could contribute directly to obesity, and the effect of IH on the expression of appetite regulatory genes remains elusive. Appetite is regulated appropriately by both the hypothalamus and the gut as a gut-brain axis driven by differential neural and hormonal signals. In this review, we summarized the recent epidemiological findings on the relationship between SAS and feeding behavior and focused on the anorexigenic effects of IH on the gut-brain axis by the IH-induced up-regulation of proopiomelanocortin and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript in neuronal cells and the IH-induced up-regulation of peptide YY, glucagon-like peptide-1 and neurotensin in enteroendocrine cells and their molecular mechanisms.
