Abstract
Newborn ruminants are highly dependent on the intake of high-quality colostrum immediately after birth to obtain energy and achieve an appropriate immunisation. Previous research indicates that poor management practices in the last months of gestation can lead to increased neonatal mortality rates by reducing colostrum quality among other factors. In ruminants, colostrum synthesis is a well-preserved mechanism which has been speculated to be regulated by the neuroendocrine system. However, this review aims to explore different approaches such as alternative dry-off management practices, the inclusion of different nutrients on prepartum diets, and the stimulation of the mammary gland immune response to modulate colostrogenesis and consequently, to enhance colostrum quality. Ensuring correct dry-off practices combined with controlled dietary supplementation can support mammary gland reorganisation and potentially modulate colostrogenesis. Despite positive effects on colostrum yield, the bioactive composition of colostrum seems to be irresponsive to prepartum energy, protein, and fat supplementation in dairy goats. On the other hand, mastitis has obvious negative effects on animal health; however, an experimentally induced local inflammation seems to trigger helpful modifications on the blood-milk barrier, enhancing the concentration of some immune components (i.e., immunoglobulin G and M) in goat colostrum. Yet, most research has focused on dairy cattle, leaving a significant knowledge gap on colostrogenesis in small ruminants. Therefore, future studies should focus on developing novel dry-off and dietary strategies to not only promote a healthy lactation but also to guarantee a successful colostrum synthesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective was to characterize the colostrum proteome of primiparous Holstein cows in association with immunoglobulin G (IgG) content. Immediately after calving, colostrum samples were collected from 18 cows to measure IgG concentration. Based on colostrum IgG content, samples were classified through cluster analysis and were identified as poor, average, and excellent quality. The proteome was assessed with quantitative shotgun proteomics; abundance data were compared among the colostrum types; enrichment analysis of metabolic processes and proteins classes was performed as well. We also tested correlations between this proteome and blood globulin level of cows and passive immunity level of calves. RESULTS On average, 428 proteins were identified per sample, which belonged mainly to cellular process, biological regulation, response to stimulus, metabolic process, and immune system process. Most abundant proteins were complement C3 (Q2UVX4), alpha-S1-casein (P02662), Ig-like domain-containing protein (A0A3Q1M032), albumin (A0A140T897), polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (P81265), lactotransferrrin (P24627), and IGHG1*01 (X16701_4). Colostrum of excellent quality had greater (P < 0.05) abundance of serpin A3-7 (A2I7N3), complement factor I (A0A3Q1MIF4), lipocalin/cytosolic fatty-acid binding domain-containing protein (A0A3Q1MRQ2), complement C3 (E1B805), complement component 4 binding protein alpha (A0AAF6ZHP5), and complement component C6 (F1MM86). However, colostrum of excellent quality had lower (P < 0.05) abundance of HGF activator (E1BCW0), alpha-S1-casein (P02662), and xanthine dehydrogenase/oxidase (P80457). This resulted in enrichment of the biological processes predominantly for complement activation alternative pathway, complement activation, complement activation classical pathway, humoral immune response, leukocyte mediated immunity, and negative regulation of endopeptidase activity in excellent-quality colostrum. Additionally, some colostrum proteins were found to be correlated with the blood globulin level of cows and with the passive immunity level of calves (P < 0.05; r ≥ 0.57). CONCLUSIONS This study provides new insights into the bovine colostrum proteome, demonstrating associations between IgG levels and the abundance of other proteins, as well as the enrichment of metabolic processes related to innate immune response. Thus, results suggest that the colostrum proteomic profile is associated with the content of IgG. Future research should deeply explore the association of these findings with pre-calving nutrition status and blood composition of the cow, and with passive immunity transfer to the calf.

Abstract
Colostrum, the initial mammary secretion produced by various mammals following birth, is a conduit for maternal immunity transfer in diverse mammalian species. Concurrently, many cellular processes are occurring in the neonatal small intestine to prepare it to receive molecular signals from a superfood essential for the neonate's health and development. During the prepartum colostrum secretion, the newborn intestine undergoes transient alterations in the intestinal barrier, primarily regulating immunoglobulin absorption. Accordingly, the immunity transfer can be delineated in two stages: the initial stage, which occurs on the maternal side (colostrogenesis serves as the primary immunoglobulin source), and the subsequent stage, which appears on the newborn side (the gut closure). The interval between the two stages is of great consequence, influencing the extent of immunity absorption and, thus, the newborn's health outcomes. The dual-phase (maternal-neonatal) process of immunity transport intersects with numerous factors, including cellular receptors such as the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), endocrine factors, physiological cellular phenomena (such as the blood-milk barrier), and environmental circumstances. However, no previous discussions have investigated the immunity transfer to neonatal health, nor have they discussed both sides. This gap highlights the necessity for further investigation into the time-dependent process, which can be described as a race against time to transfer adequate immunity (in quantity and quality) to neonates. Accordingly, the review encompasses a comprehensive analysis of immunological studies, from their foundational stages to the latest molecular research conducted on various mammalian species. This review aims to discern patterns and draw comparisons that advance our understanding of the complex interplay between colostral immunity transfers from diverse view points, including veterinary science and immunology.

Abstract
Circulating immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations in newborn goat kids are not sufficient to protect the animal against external agents. Therefore, consumption of colostrum, rich in immune components, shortly after birth is crucial. Traditional laboratory methods used to measure IgG concentrations, such as ELISA or RID, are reliable but costly and impractical for many farmers. This study proposes a more accessible alternative for farmers to predict IgG concentration in goat colostrum by integrating color-based techniques with machine learning models, specifically decision trees and neural networks, through the development of two regression models based on colostrum color data from Majorera dairy goats. A total of 813 colostrum samples were collected in a previous study (June 1997-April 2003) that utilized multiple regression analysis as a reference to verify that applying data science techniques improves accuracy and reliability. The decision tree model outperformed the neural network, achieving higher accuracy and lower error rates. Both models provided predictions that closely matched IgG concentrations obtained by ELISA. Therefore, this methodology offers a practical and affordable solution for the on-farm assessment of colostrum quality (i.e., IgG concentration). This approach could significantly improve farm management practices, ensuring better health outcomes in newborn animals by facilitating timely and accurate colostrum quality evaluation.

Abstract
Colostrum is gaining popularity in cosmetic products. The present study compared the composition and selected biological properties of colostrum from Polish sheep (colostrum 1) and Swiss sheep (colostrum 2), particularly those that can affect healthy or diseased skin. The antioxidant activity of the colostrums was measured using ABTS and DPPH assays. The effect on the proliferation of human skin fibroblasts, neonatal epidermal keratinocytes, and human diabetic fibroblast (dHF) cells isolated from diabetic foot ulcers was also assayed in vitro by MTT and Presto Blue tests, respectively. The colostrum simulated dHF cell proliferation by up to 115.4%. The highest used concentration of colostrum 1 stimulated normal fibroblast proliferation by 191.2% (24 h) and 222.2% (48 h). Both colostrums inhibited epidermal keratinocyte viability. The influence of the colostrums on the expression of genes related to proliferation (Ki67) and immune response (IL-6, PTGS-2, TSG-6) in dHF cells were compared. Colostrum 1 increased the rate of wound closure (scar test). Analysis of total fat, protein and fatty acid content found the Polish colostrum to be a richer source of fat than the Swiss colostrum, which contained a larger amount of protein. Both colostrums exhibit properties that suggest they could be effective components in cosmetic or medicinal formulations for skin care, especially supporting its regeneration, rejuvenation, and wound healing.

Abstract
Colostrum contains macro- and micronutrients necessary to meet the nutritional and energy requirements of the neonatal calf, bioactive components that intervene in several physiological aspects, and cells and microorganisms that modulate the calf's immune system and gut microbiome. Colostrum is sometimes mistaken as transition milk, which, although more nutritive than whole milk, has a distinct biochemical composition. Furthermore, most research about colostrum quality and colostrum management focuses on the transfer of maternal IgG to the newborn calf. The remaining components of colostrum and transition milk have not received the same attention, despite their importance to the newborn animal. In this narrative review, a large body of literature on the components of bovine colostrum was reviewed. The variability of these components was summarized, emphasizing specific components that warrant deeper exploration. In addition, the effects of each component present in colostrum and transition milk on several key physiological aspects of the newborn calf are discussed.

Abstract
In newborn ruminants, transfer of passive immunity is essential to obtain protection against pathogens. This study aimed to increase the permeability of the blood-milk barrier using intramammary lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in goats at parturition to modulate colostrum composition. Twenty multiparous Majorera dairy goats were randomly allocated in one of the two experimental groups. The LPS group (n = 10) received an intramammary administration (IA) of saline (2 mL) containing 50 µg of LPS from Escherichia coli (O55:B5) in each half udder at parturition. The control group (n = 10) received an IA of saline (2 mL). Rectal temperature (RT) was recorded, and a blood sample was collected at parturition (before IA). In addition, RT was measured, and blood and colostrum/milk samples were collected on day (d) 0.125 (3 hours), 0.5 (12 hours), 1, 2, 4, 7, 15 and 30 relative to the IA. Goat plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) and M (IgM) and serum β-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, calcium, free fatty acids, lactate dehydrogenase and total protein concentrations were determined. Colostrum and milk yields as well as chemical composition, somatic cell count (SCC), IgG and IgM concentrations were measured. The MIXED procedure (SAS 9.4) was used, and the model included the IA, time, and the interaction between both fixed effects. Statistical significance was set as P < 0.05. Goats from the LPS group showed higher RT on d 0.125, 0.5 and 4 relative to the IA compared to the control group (PIA×Time = 0.007). Goat serum biochemical variables and plasma IgG and IgM concentrations were not affected by the IA. Colostrum and milk yield as well as chemical composition were not affected by the IA, except for milk lactose percentage that was lower in the LPS group compared to the control group (4.3 ± 0.08 and 4.6 ± 0.08%, respectively PIA = 0.026). Colostrum SCC was higher in the LPS group than in the control group (3.5 ± 0.09 and 3.1 ± 0.09 cells × 106/mL, respectively; PIA = 0.011). Similarly, milk SCC increased in the LPS group compared to the control group (PIA = 0.004). The LPS group showed higher IgG (PIA = 0.044) and IgM (PIA = 0.037) concentrations on colostrum than the control group (31.9 ± 4.8 and 19.0 ± 4.8 mg/mL, 0.8 ± 0.08 and 0.5 ± 0.08 mg/mL, respectively). No differences in milk IgG and IgM concentrations between groups were observed. In conclusion, the IA of LPS at parturition increases RT, SCC and IgG and IgM concentrations in colostrum without affecting either yield or chemical composition.

Abstract
Maternal care is essential to optimally support survival of the offspring. During evolution of mammalian species, different phenotypes have evolved in relation to gestation length, number, size, and maturation stage of the offspring at parturition, as well as colostrum and milk composition. The aim of the present review is to describe relationships between placental function and colostrum and milk composition in different mammalian species. Species covered in this article include humans, rabbits, rodents (rat and mouse), carnivores (cats and dogs), and a variety of ungulate species (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and horses). Species-specific aspects are elucidated with a special focus on the transfer of passive immunity. In this regard, the structure and thus the capability of the placenta to transport immunoglobulins from maternal to fetal circulation in utero dictates the necessity of the passive transfer of immunity via colostrum. Consequently, species with exclusive postpartal transfer of immunity such as in all ungulate species have greater immunoglobulin G concentrations in colostrum than species with a prepartal transfer in utero, where especially immunoglobulin A with its local immune function in the gastrointestinal tract is present in colostrum (e.g., rabbit and human). In terms of the nutritional purpose, suckling frequency is an important factor determining the gross composition of colostrum as well as in the mature milk of these species. Milk of nidicolous animals with long intervals in-between suckling events contains more fat than milk of nidifugous animals with constant access to their mother. However, the importance of colostrum and milk consumption for newborn animals and human babies goes beyond nutrition and the transfer of immunity. Numerous bioactive components such as growth factors, hormones, and oligosaccharides are enriched in colostrum and transition milk, which support the development of the intestinal tract and local immune system.

Bovine colostrum promoted ileal health in newborn lambs at 24 h after birth: insight from intestinal morphology and innate immunity. Animal 2022; 16:100592. Abstract
The contribution of colostrum to passive immunity transfer and intestinal protection in newborn ruminants is well known; however, it is currently unclear how colostrum intake affects intestinal innate immunity. We investigated the effects of bovine colostrum intake on ileal morphology, expression of genes involved in intestinal innate immunity, and serum concentrations of inflammatory cytokines in newborn lambs. Twenty-seven newborn male Hu lambs were used, of which 18 were bottle-fed either bovine colostrum (C24h; n = 9) or bovine mature milk (M24h; n = 9) within the first 2 h after birth at an intake of approximately 8% of BW; the remaining nine lambs did not receive any feeding (N24h). Blood and ileal tissue samples were collected after the lambs were slaughtered at 24 h after birth. Ileal villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio were significantly higher in C24h than those in N24h and M24h lambs (P < 0.01). Messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance of toll-like receptor (TLR)-2, TLR3, TLR4, TLR6, TLR7, TLR8 and tumour necrosis factor alpha in the ileum was lower in C24h than that in N24h lambs (P < 0.05). Moreover, C24h lambs had a lower TLR3 mRNA abundance (P < 0.01) and a trend of lower TLR6 (P = 0.06) and interleukin 1 beta (P = 0.08) expression compared with those in M24h lambs. We also observed strong positive correlations of tumour necrosis factor alpha expression with that of TLR2 (r = 0.71; P < 0.001), TLR4 (r = 0.88; P < 0.001) and TLR8 (r = 0.83; P < 0.001). Interestingly, the expression of barrier-related molecules, including mucin-13, lysozyme, claudin (CLDN)-1, CLDN2, CLDN4, CLDN7, CLDN12, occludin, zonula occluden-1 and junctional adhesion molecule-1, was consistently lower in C24h lambs than that in N24h and M24h lambs (P < 0.05). These results indicated that the beneficial roles of colostrum intake on intestinal protection in newborn lambs were associated with low TLR expression, which was reflected by improved intestinal development and reduced inflammatory response. Further studies using fluorescence in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemical methods are needed to further explore the mechanisms underlying the lower expression of intestinal barrier-related molecules due to colostrum feeding.

Abstract
Thermal treatments of milk induce changes in the properties of milk whey proteins. The aim of this study was to investigate the specific changes related to nutrients in the whey proteins of dairy cow milk after pasteurization at 85 °C for 15 s or ultra-high temperature (UHT) at 135 °C for 15 s. A total of 223 whey proteins were confidently identified and quantified by TMT-based global discovery proteomics in this study. We found that UHT thermal treatment resulted in an increased abundance of 17 proteins, which appeared to show heat insensitivity. In contrast, 15 heat-sensitive proteins were decreased in abundance after UHT thermal treatment. Some of the heat-sensitive proteins were connected with the biological immune functionality, suggesting that UHT thermal treatment results in a partial loss of immune function in the whey proteins of dairy cow milk. The information reported here will considerably expand our knowledge about the degree of heat sensitivity in the whey proteins of dairy cow milk in response to different thermal treatments and offer a knowledge-based reference to aid in choosing dairy products. It is worth noting that the whey proteins (lactoperoxidase and lactoperoxidase) in milk that were significantly decreased by high heat treatment in a previous study (142 °C) showed no significant difference in the present study (135 °C). These results may imply that an appropriately reduced heating intensity of UHT retains the immunoactive proteins to the maximum extent possible.

Abstract
Colostrum is the first milk produced post-partum by mammals and is compositionally distinct from mature milk. Bovine colostrum has a long history of consumption by humans, and there have been a number of studies investigating its potential for applications in human nutrition and health. Extensive characterization of the constituent fractions has identified a wealth of potentially bioactive molecules, their potential for shaping neonatal development, and the potential for their application beyond the neonatal period. Proteins, fats, glycans, minerals, and vitamins are abundant in colostrum, and advances in dairy processing technologies have enabled the advancement of bovine colostrum from relative limitations of a fresh and unprocessed food to a variety of potential applications. In these forms, clinical studies have examined bovine colostrum as having the substantial potential to improve human health. This review discusses the macro-and micronutrient composition of colostrum as well as describing well-characterized bioactives found in bovine colostrum and their potential for human health. Current gaps in knowledge are also identified and future directions are considered in order to elevate the potential for bovine colostrum as a component of a healthy diet for a variety of relevant human populations.

Abstract
The present study aims to investigate the composition including concentrations of IGF-1, IgG and Vit A in colostrum and their effects by litter size and goat parity in 3 groups of goats; Black Bengal (BB), Saanen (SA) and their crossbred (BBSA). Thirty-eight goats were used (23 BB, 7 BBSA and 8 SA). The composition (fat, protein, lactose and total solid; TS) in colostrum (Day 0; D0) and milk (Day 4; D4 and Day 7; D7) were measured. The IGF-1, IgG concentrations were analysed in some samples collected at D0, D4 and D7 while Vit A was analysed only in colostrum. The results showed that colostrum components were similar among experimental groups. However, the colostral IGF-1 concentration of BBSA (983.0 ± 163.6 ng/mL) was higher than that of BB (340.7 ± 85.5 ng/mL, p < 0.01) and SA (417.1 ± 93.9 ng/mL, p < 0.01). The colostral IgG concentration of BB (8.2 ± 0.9 mg/mL) was lower than that of BBSA (12.9 ± 1.7 mg/mL, p < 0.05) and SA (12.9 ± 1.0 mg/mL, p < 0.01). Colostral Vit A concentration in BBSA (787.2 ± 152.6 µg/100 gm) was higher than that in BB (388.9 ± 84.3 µg/100 gm, p < 0.05) but was not different from SA (522.8 ± 96.9 µg/100 gm). Colostrum from all groups contained higher protein and TS but was lower in lactose concentration than milk. The IGF-1 and IgG concentrations in colostrum were much higher than in milk both D4 and D7 (p < 0.001). Additionally, litter size had no effects on colostrum contents but colostrum from goats with a higher parity number had higher IgG concentration. It is concluded that colostrum from BBSA may be superior when fed to BB newborn goats in terms of higher IGF-1, IgG and Vit A contents. Moreover, colostrum from goats with a high parity number contained more IgG content.

Abstract
Milk and colostrum have high biological potential, and due to their natural origin and non-toxicity, they have many uses in cosmetics and dermatology. Research is ongoing on their potential application in other fields of medicine, but there are still few results; most of the published ones are included in this review. These natural products are especially rich in proteins, such as casein, β-lactoglobulin, α-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, immunoglobulins, lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, and growth factors, and possess various antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer, antioxidant, immunomodulatory properties, etc. This review describes the physico-chemical properties of milk and colostrum proteins and the natural functions they perform in the body and compares their composition between animal species (cows, goats, and sheep). The milk- and colostrum-based products can be used in dietary supplementation and for performing immunomodulatory functions; they can enhance the effects of certain drugs and can have a lethal effect on pathogenic microorganisms. Milk products are widely used in the treatment of dermatological diseases for promoting the healing of chronic wounds, hastening tissue regeneration, and the treatment of acne vulgaris or plaque psoriasis. They are also increasingly regarded as active ingredients that can improve the condition of the skin by reducing the number of acne lesions and blackheads, regulating sebum secretion, ameliorating inflammatory changes as well as bestowing a range of moisturizing, protective, toning, smoothing, anti-irritation, whitening, soothing, and antiaging effects.

Abstract
The newborn gut undergoes rapid colonization by commensal microorganisms and possible exposure to pathogens. The contribution of colostrum intake to host protection is well known; however, limited research exists on the intestinal innate immunity corresponding to colostrum intake during the passive immune transfer period in newborn ruminants. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in bacterial community and expression of genes encoding toll-like receptors (TLR), mucins (MUC), antimicrobial peptides, and tight junctions in the jejunum of lambs that were fed colostrum during the first 24 h of life. Twenty-seven newborn lambs were used in this study, of which 18 lambs were bottle-fed pooled bovine colostrum within the first 2 h after birth to obtain an intake of approximately 8% of body weight. Lambs were slaughtered at 12 (n = 9) and 24 h (n = 9) after birth. The remaining 9 lambs without any feeding were slaughtered at 30 min after birth (0 h). Tissue and ligated segment samples from the jejunum were collected immediately after the lambs were slaughtered. The bacterial profile in the ligated jejunum segment was assessed using amplicon sequencing. The gene expression in the jejunum tissue was determined using quantitative real-time PCR. The relative abundances of Escherichia-Shigella, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, and Streptococcus increased, whereas those of Sphingomonas, Phyllobacterium, Bradyrhizobium, and Rudaea decreased during the first 24 h of life. Expression of TLR2 and β-defensin 109-like was upregulated at 12 h after birth, but a recovery was detected at 24 h; TLR3, TLR5, LYZ, MUC1, MUC13, MUC20, and CLDN7 showed a higher expression level in samples taken at 24 h than in those taken at 0 h. In addition, expression level of CLDN1, CLDN4, and the junctional adhesion molecule-1 tended to be higher at 24 h than at 0 h after birth. Correlation analysis indicated that TLR2 expression was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Bradyrhizobium, whereas TLR5 expression was positively correlated with the relative abundance of Escherichia-Shigella and Pelagibacterium. These results suggest that TLR, MUC, antimicrobial peptides, and CLDN act together and play an important role in intestinal defense during the passive immune transfer period. They are potentially associated with microbial colonization. The findings from this study provide novel information to elucidate the role of colostrum components in regulating the development of the intestinal mucosal immune barrier in newborn lambs during the passive immune transfer period.

Abstract
Infant formula is used as a supplement for newborns. Although bovine milk-based infant formulas dominate the market, caprine milk-based infant formula has attracted increasing attention because of its lower allergenicity. This study compared the digestive peptidome of bovine and caprine milk serum proteins by using in vitro infant simulating conditions. The result showed that the degradation pattern of milk proteins was similar, whereas the digestive rates of milk proteins differed between bovine and caprine milks. Several proteins, such as α-lactalbumin (LALBA), β-lactoglobulin (LGB), serum amyloid A protein (SAA1), glycosylation-dependent cell adhesion molecule 1 (GLYCAM1), and lactotransferrin (LTF), released more peptides during digestion of caprine milk serum than during digestion of bovine milk serum; however, more peptides derived from αS1-casein (CSN1S1) were found in bovine digesta. In addition, antimicrobial-related peptides were mostly only found in caprine intestinal digesta. The results of this study may be useful in understanding the digestion characteristics of milk serum proteins and providing guidance on the improvement of infant formula.

Abstract
Colostrum is a unique resource that contributes to the passive transfer of immunity and plays a central role in the health status of neonatal ruminants. However, digestion and absorption of colostral proteins in the gut remain incompletely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of bovine colostrum feeding on blood metabolic traits and to quantify colostral bioactive proteins in the gastrointestinal digesta and blood to evaluate intestinal transfer in neonatal lambs in the first 24 h of life. Fifty-four newborn lambs were used in this study, including 27 lambs fed pooled bovine colostrum and slaughtered at 6 (C6h), 12 (C12h), or 24 h (C24h) after birth; 18 lambs not fed any colostrum or milk and slaughtered at birth (N0h) or 24 h (N24h) after birth; and 9 milk-fed lambs slaughtered at 24 h (M24h) after birth. Lambs receiving colostrum or milk were bottle-fed within the first 2 h to obtain intakes of 8% of body weight at birth. Samples of blood and digesta from the abomasum, jejunum, and ileum were collected after slaughter. Serum concentrations of glucose, insulin, total protein, and aspartate aminotransferase were higher in colostrum-fed lambs than in N0h lambs. Serum concentrations of insulin, total protein, insulin-like growth factor 1, and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase were higher in C24h lambs than in N24h or M24h lambs. Apparent efficiencies of IgG absorption in C6h, C12h, and C24h lambs were 14.4, 26.8, and 17.2%, respectively, whereas apparent efficiencies of lactoferrin (LF), α-lactalbumin (α-LA), and β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) absorption were very low in colostrum-fed lambs, with mean values of 0.06, 0.002, and 0.003%, respectively. Concentrations of IgG, LF, α-LA, and β-LG in the digesta of the abomasum, jejunum, and ileum rapidly decreased from C6h to C24h lambs, and the disappearance rates of IgG, LF, α-LA, and β-LG were higher in lambs from C6h to C12h (62.1, 75.7, 91.3, and 95.0% for IgG, LF, α-LA, and β-LG, respectively) than from C12h to C24h (34.6, 22.5, 7.5, and 2.2% for IgG, LF, α-LA, and β-LG, respectively). These results indicated that bovine colostrum feeding improved the metabolic and immunological status of lambs, and that ingested colostral IgG was prone to intact uptake into the blood, whereas almost all ingested LF, α-LA, and β-LG disappeared in the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract in a time-dependent manner. The findings provide novel information for exploring selective absorption of colostral compounds in the small intestine of lambs.

Abstract
Colostrum and milk proteins are essential resources for the growth and development of the newborns, while their kinds and amounts vary greatly during the lactation period. This study was conducted to better understand whey proteome and its changes at six lactation time points (0 d, 3 d, 7 d, 14 d, 28 d, and 56 d after lambing) in Hu sheep. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF/TOF MS) technologies, a total of 52 differentially expressed protein spots (DEPS), corresponding to 25 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), were obtained. The protein spots abundance analysis revealed that the proteins are the most abundant at 0 d after lambing. Gene ontology (GO) annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis were used to explore the biological functions of the DEPs. The biological process was mainly involved in localization, the single-organism process, the cellular process, and a series of immune processes. The cellular components engaged in the extracellular region were the cell, organelle, and membrane. The most prevalent molecular function was binding activity. In addition, the DEPs were involved in nine significant pathways, including the Hippo signaling pathway and Complement and coagulation cascades. These results intuitively presented the changes in Hu sheep whey proteins during a 56-d lactation period, and revealed potential biological functions of the DEPs, providing a scientific basis for early weaning.

Abstract
The demand for animal products (e.g. dairy and beef) in tropical regions is expected to increase in parallel with the public demand for sustainable practices, due to factors such as population growth and climate change. The necessity to increase animal production output must be achieved with better management and production technologies. For this to happen, novel research methodologies, animal selection and postgenomic tools play a pivotal role. Indeed, improving breeder selection programs, the quality of meat and dairy products as well as animal health will contribute to higher sustainability and productivity. This would surely benefit regions where resource quality and quantity are increasingly unstable, and research is still very incipient, which is the case of many regions in the tropics. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate how omics-based approaches play a major role in animal science, particularly concerning ruminant production systems and research associated to the tropics and developing countries. SIGNIFICANCE: Environmental conditions in the tropics make livestock production harder, compared to temperate regions. Due to global warming, the sustainability of livestock production will become increasingly problematic. The use of novel omics technologies could generate useful information to understand adaptation mechanisms of resilient breeds and/or species. The application of omics to tropical animal production is still residual in the currently available literature. With this review, we aim to summarize the most notable results in the field whilst encouraging further research to deal with the future challenges that animal production in the tropics will need to face.

Abstract
Guanzhong goat and Holstein cow milk are the major milks supplied in China. Whey proteins play an important role in immune defense for newborn mammals. This study aimed to analyze the differentially expressed whey proteins of Guanzhong goat milk and Holstein cow milk by using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based proteomics techniques. A total of 165 whey proteins were quantified, 114 of which differed significantly in abundance in goat and cow milks. According to the "up_keywords," in the online DAVID tool (https://david.ncifcrf.gov/home.jsp), 75% of these differentially expressed whey proteins were related to the category of "signal." Gene Ontology analyses classified these differentially expressed proteins into biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions. The most common biological process was response to stress, the most common cellular component was related to extracellular region, and the most prevalent molecular function was binding. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses showed that these proteins were mainly involved in the complement and coagulation cascade pathways. The results improve our understanding of the different biological properties of whey proteins in goat and cow milks.

Abstract
Background The milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) proteomes of colostrum and transition milk are rich sources of proteins that are likely important for neonatal calf health. In addition, characterization of these proteomes could also yield valuable information regarding mammary gland physiology of the early postpartum lactating cow. The objectives of this research were to characterize the MFGM proteomes of colostrum and transition milk through sample collections at four timepoints postpartum, including the first milking (M1, colostrum), second milking (M2, transition milk), fourth milking (M4, transition milk), and fourteenth milking (M14, mature milk), and compare these proteomes between multiparous (MP; n = 10) and primiparous (PP; n = 10) Holstein dairy cows. Isolated MFGM proteins were labeled using Tandem Mass tagging and analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Protein identification was completed using MASCOT and Sequest in Proteome Discoverer 2.2. The scaled abundance values were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS to determine the effects of milking (MIL), parity (PAR), and MIL × PAR. The adaptive false-discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted P values were determined using PROC MULTTEST. Protein characterization and bioinformatic analysis were completed using a combination of PANTHER, Blast, and Uniprot. Results A total of 104 common proteins were identified in each of the MFGM samples. Statistical analysis revealed that 70.2% of identified proteins were affected by MIL. Of these, 78.1% were lower in M14 compared with M1, including immune-related proteins lactotransferrin, lactadherin and hemopexin. Parity affected 44.2% of proteins. Of the proteins affected by PAR, 84.8% were higher in MP cows compared with PP cows, including apolipoprotein E and histones 2A, 2B, 3, and 4 b. Butyrophilin subfamily 1 member 1A and annexin 5 were higher in samples from PP cows. Milking × parity affected 32.7% of identified proteins, including lactotransferrin, gelsolin, vitamin D binding protein, and S100 proteins. Conclusions This research supports previous findings that the Holstein MFGM proteome changes rapidly during the first week of lactation. In addition, this research identifies the impact of parity on the colostrum and transition milk MFGM proteomes, which may be important for milk-fed calf health or for the identification of protein biomarkers for mammary functionality.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether piglets absorb immunoglobin G (IgG) from goat colostrum and the potential effects of its ingestion on suckling piglets. Thirty-eight piglets with body weights ranging from 1000 to 1700 g were assigned to one of the three experimental treatments: Control group (C), where piglets were allowed to suckle normally, and porcine and goat groups. The piglets from the last two groups were removed from the sows after birth and received an oral 20 mL dose every 3 h of porcine (PC) or goat colostrum (GC), respectively, during first 12 h of life. Then, they were returned to newly farrowing sows to continue suckling until 20 d. The apparent efficiency of absorption (AEA) of IgG at 12 h was calculated as total serum IgG divided by ingested IgG. No diarrhea or symptoms of intolerance were observed at any time. On day 20, body weight and the number of dead piglets were similar in all three treatments (p > 0.05). At 12 h, the concentration of goat IgG in the serum of piglets fed GC was 8.11 mg/mL. AEA was 20.9% for goat IgG and 26.3% for porcine IgG (p > 0.05). Therefore, goat colostrum seems a promising alternative to study new feed supplements or artificial rearing of newborn piglets.

Abstract
AbstractMilk production intensification has led to several unwanted aspects, such as sustainability issues and environmental pollution. Among these, increased milk outputs that have been achieved over the last 70 years have led to several health and pathophysiological conditions in high yielding dairy animals, including metabolic diseases that were uncommon in the past. Increased occurrence of diverse metabolic diseases in cattle and other domestic animals is a key feature of domestication that not only affects the animals' health and productivity, but also may have important and adverse health impacts on human consumers through the elevated use of drugs and antibiotics. These aspects will influence economical and ethical aspects in the near future. Therefore, finding and establishing proper biomarkers for early detection of metabolic diseases is of great interest. In the present review, recent work on the discovery of fitness, stress and welfare biomarkers in dairy cows is presented, focusing in particular on possible biomarkers of energy balance and oxidative stress in plasma and milk, and biomarkers of production-related diseases and decreased fertility.

Abstract
The Camelidae family comprises the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus), the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius), and four species of South American camelids: llama (Lama glama), alpaca (Lama pacos) guanaco (Lama guanicoe), and vicuña (Vicugna vicugna). The main characteristic of these species is their ability to cope with either hard climatic conditions like those found in arid regions (Bactrian and dromedary camels) or high-altitude landscapes like those found in South America (South American camelids). Because of such interesting physiological and adaptive traits, the interest for these animals as livestock species has increased considerably over the last years. In general, the main animal products obtained from these animals are meat, milk, and hair fiber, although they are also used for races and work among other activities. In the near future, climate change will likely decrease agricultural areas for animal production worldwide, particularly in the tropics and subtropics where competition with crops for human consumption is a major problem already. In such conditions, extensive animal production could be limited in some extent to semi-arid rangelands, subjected to periodical draughts and erratic patterns of rainfall, severely affecting conventional livestock production, namely cattle and sheep. In the tropics and subtropics, camelids may become an important protein source for humans. This article aims to review some of the recent literature about the meat, milk, and hair fiber production in the six existing camelid species highlighting their benefits and drawbacks, overall contributing to the development of camelid production in the framework of food security.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the texture profile of fresh and cooked longissimusthoracis et lumborum muscle from suckling kids raised with natural milk or milk replacers. Suckling male kids from eight goat breeds (Florida, FL; Cabra del Guadarrama, GU; Majorera, MA; Palmera, PL; Payoya, PY; Retinta, RE; Tinerfeña, TI; Verata, VE), all of single parturition, were raised with milk replacers (MR) or with natural milk from the dams (NM). The meat pH, Warner-Bratzler shear force, texture profile analysis and chemical composition were determined. Kids were clustered based on their pH by k-means clustering. The effect of the rearing system on the textural profile was strongly modulated by breed. The values of Warner-Bratzler shear force and hardness found in these breeds under both rearing systems were very low. Hence, the toughness of very light suckling kids should not be a determining factor in choosing a breed or rearing system. Nevertheless, the use of milk replacers increased the presence of meat with high pH, which modified the textural parameters, decreasing the shear force but increasing cohesiveness and adhesiveness. Consequently, depending on the commercial strategy of the farm, the election of the breed and rearing system must be considered together.

Abstract
The aim of the studies presented in this research communication was to compare species of origin (goat and sheep) and the effect of treatment (pasteurization at 56, 63 and 72 °C, skimming and curding) and refrigeration time on colostrum antimicrobial activity (AnAc). In experiment 1, twenty-four first milking colostrum samples were obtained (12 goats, 12 sheep) and an aliquot of each sample was subjected to 6 different treatments, control (untreated), pasteurization at 56, 63 and 72 °C, skimming and curding. Colostrum AnAc was tested directly against E. coli using disks in a Petri dish and Enrofloxacin (antibiotic) and saline serum as positive and negative control, respectively. Species had no effect (P > 0.05) on colostrum AnAc, and neither did pasteurization at different temperatures or skimming. However, curding showed the lowest colostrum AnAc (P < 0.05) in both species. In the second experiment, four treatments were assayed, control, pasteurization at 56 and 63 °C and skimming. An aliquot of twelve goat colostrum samples were refrigerated after treatments for 10 d at 4 °C. Colostrum AnAc was measured at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 d. A reduction in colostrum AnAc was observed due to refrigeration time. The results suggest that if farmers use frozen colostrum for neonates, the process of curding colostrum or refrigeration at 4 °C longer than 4 d is not recommended.

Abstract
The objectives of this review paper are to present udder defences, including teat of the udder, mammary epithelial cells, leucocytes, immunoglobulins, complement system and chemical antibacterial agents, to describe cooperation and interactions between them and to elaborate on potentials regarding their significance in mammary immunisation strategies. The teat of the udder provides initial protection to the mammary gland. The mammary epithelial cells synthesise antibacterial proteins and the leucocytes produce various inflammation mediators (cytokines or chemokines), phagocytose bacteria and recognise antigenic structures. In the mammary gland, four immunoglobulins (IgG1, IgG2, IgM and IgA) have important roles against bacterial pathogens. The complement system is a collection of proteins, participating in the inflammatory process through various pathways. Other components contributing to humoral mammary defence include lactoferrin, lysozyme and the lactoperoxidase/myeloperoxidase systems, as well as oligosaccharides, gangliosides, reactive oxygen species, acute phase proteins (e.g., haptoglobin and serum amyloid A), ribonucleases and a wide range of antimicrobial peptides. Management practices, genetic variations and nutrition can influence mammary defences and should be taken into account in the formulation of prevention strategies against ovine mastitis.

Abstract
Several physiological and metabolic changes take place in dairy ruminants around parturition (late pregnancy, parturition, and early lactation). Dairy species are genetically selected for their higher milk production compared with non-dairy species. This fact causes a constant stress that impairs the immune status of the animal, with consequences for its welfare and performance. In the present study, we assessed the immune status of high-yield dairy sheep and goats by quantifying IgG and IgM concentrations, as well as chitotriosidase (ChT) and complement system [total complement system (TC) and alternative complement pathway (AC)] activity in blood plasma around parturition. We also measured IgG and IgM concentrations and ChT activity in colostrum and milk during the first 40 d postpartum. The lowest blood IgG concentration was at parturition in both species. We detected no differences in blood IgG concentrations between species. Blood IgM concentrations were constant in both species throughout the study period. However, blood IgM concentrations were greater in sheep than in goats. Blood ChT activity was greater in goats than in sheep, and both species showed constant activity of this enzyme throughout the study period. We observed no differences in complement system (TC and AC) activity between sheep and goats. In addition, both TC and AC activity were constant in both species throughout the experiment. In general, IgG and IgM concentrations were greater in sheep colostrum than in goat colostrum, but these differences disappeared after d 4 (IgG) and d 3 (IgM) postpartum. In both species, the highest IgG and IgM concentrations were measured in colostrum, gradually decreasing during the first days postpartum. Chitotriosidase activity decreased in both species from colostrum to milk, although goats always showed greater ChT activity than sheep. Both sheep and goats seemed to be more susceptible to infectious diseases around parturition. As well, goats showed greater ChT activity in blood, colostrum, and milk than sheep. This fact may give these animals additional protection against parasite and fungal infections.

Abstract
AbstractMilk is an important protein source in human diets, providing around 32 g protein/l (for bovine milk, which constitutes some 85% of global consumption). The most abundant milk proteins are α-lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin, αs-casein, β-casein, and κ-casein. Besides their nutritional value, milk proteins play a crucial role in the processing properties of milk, such as solubility, water bonding, heat stability, renneting and foaming, among others. In addition, and most importantly for this review, these proteins are the main source of bioactive components in milk. Due to the wide range of proposed beneficial effects on human health, milk proteins are considered as potential ingredients for the production of health-promoting functional foods. However, most of the evidence for bioactive effects comes from in vitro studies, and there is a need for further research to fully evaluate the true potential of milk-derived bioactive factors. Animal genetics and animal nutrition play an important role in the relative proportions of milk proteins and could be used to manipulate the concentration of specific bioactive peptides in milk from ruminants. Unfortunately, only a few studies in the literature have focused on changes in milk bioactive peptides associated to animal genetics and animal nutrition. The knowledge described in the present review may set the basis for further research and for the development of new dairy products with healthy and beneficial properties for humans.

Abstract
Colostrum represents the sole source to acquire humoral immunity and is an important energy source for newborn lambs and goat kids. However, colostrum composition (i.e., the contents of IgG, fat, protein, and lactose) is affected by various factors such as parity and litter size and, potentially, by breed. In the present study, we examined the colostrum composition of different goat and sheep breeds raised for milk and meat production in Switzerland and Germany. Ten goat breeds (Anglo-Nubian, Appenzell, Boer, Bunte Deutsche Edelziege, Chamois-colored, Grisons Striped, Peacock, Saanen, Toggenburg, and Valais Blackneck) and 10 sheep breeds (Brown-Headed Meat, East Friesian Milk, German Blackheaded Mutton, Gray Horned Heath, Lacaune Dairy, Merino Land, Swiss Black-Brown Mountain, Swiss Charollais, Swiss White Alpine, and Valais Blacknose) were involved in this study. First colostrum samples were obtained from ewes (n = 100) and goats (n = 116) between 10 and 390 min after parturition and analyzed for total IgG, fat, protein, and lactose contents. Colostral IgG concentrations varied between 4.8 and 75.0 mg/mL in goats, and between 6.2 and 65.4 mg/mL in ewes, and the time interval between milking and parturition did not affect colostral IgG concentrations. In goats, the highest IgG concentrations were found in Boer (meat-type; 61.0 ± 10.3 mg/mL; mean ± SD) and the lowest concentrations were observed in Bunte Deutsche Edelziege (milk-type; 26.5 ± 12.5 mg/mL). In sheep, East Friesian Milk and Lacaune Dairy showed the lowest colostral IgG concentrations (17.9 ± 7.3 and 20.2 ± 8.0 mg/mL, respectively), and the highest values were observed in the Merino Land breed (44.2 ± 15.7 mg/mL). The lowest fat and protein concentrations and concomitantly highest lactose concentrations were observed in colostrum of East Friesian Milk and Lacaune Dairy sheep. Parity number did not affect colostrum composition in sheep or goats. In contrast, colostral fat content was higher in ewes bearing twins and triplets than in those carrying singletons. Increasing litter size tended to be associated with higher protein and lower lactose concentrations in ovine (i.e., singletons vs. twins vs. triplets) and caprine colostrum (i.e., singletons vs. twins), whereas colostral IgG concentrations were not affected by litter size. In conclusion, IgG and concentrations of other colostrum constituents showed a wide range in goats and ewes and were mainly affected by the type of breed.

Abstract
Identification and characterization of the comprehensive bovine milk proteome has historically been limited due to the dichotomy of protein abundances within milk. The high abundance of a select few proteins, including caseins, α-lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin, and serum albumin, has hindered intensive identification and characterization of the vast array of low-abundance proteins in milk due to limitations in separation techniques and protein labeling capacity. In more recent years, the development and advancement of proteomics techniques have yielded valuable tools for characterization of the protein profile in bovine milk. More extensive fractionation and enrichment techniques, including the use of combinations of precipitation techniques, immunosorption, gel electrophoresis, chromatography, ultracentrifugation, and hexapeptide-based binding enrichment, have allowed for better isolation of lower abundance proteins for further downstream liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry approaches. The different milk subfractions isolated during these processes can also be analyzed as individual entities to assess the protein profile unique to the different fractions-for instance, investigation of the skim milk-associated proteome versus the milk fat globule membrane-associated proteome. Updates to high-throughput methods, equipment, and software have also allowed for greater interpretation and visualization of the data. For instance, labeling techniques have enabled analysis of multiplexed samples and more accurate comparison of specific protein abundances and quantities across samples, and integration of gene ontology analysis has allowed for a more in-depth and visual representation of potential relationships between identified proteins. Inclusively, these developments in proteomic techniques have allowed for a rapid increase in the number of milk-associated proteins identified and a better grasp of the relationships and potential functionality of the proteins within the milk proteome.

Abstract
Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile is a marine plant with interesting biological properties potentially ascribed to the synergistic combination of bioactive compounds. Our previously described extract, obtained from the leaves of P. oceanica, showed the ability to impair HT1080 cell migration by targeting both expression and activity of gelatinases. Commonly, the lack of knowledge about the mechanism of action of phytocomplexes may be an obstacle regarding their therapeutic use and development. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the molecular signaling through which such bioactive compounds impact on malignant cell migration and gelatinolytic activity. The increase in autophagic vacuoles detected by confocal microscopy suggested an enhancement of autophagy in a time and dose dependent manner. This autophagy activation was further confirmed by monitoring pivotal markers of autophagy signaling as well as by evidencing an increase in IGF-1R accumulation on cell membranes. Taken together, our results confirm that the P. oceanica phytocomplex is a promising reservoir of potent and cell safe molecules able to defend against malignancies and other diseases in which gelatinases play a major role in progression. In conclusion, the attractive properties of this phytocomplex may be of industrial interest in regard to the development of novel health-promoting and pharmacological products for the treatment or prevention of several diseases.

Abstract
Goat dairy products are an important source of animal protein in the tropics. During the dry season, pasture scarcity leads animals to lose up to 40% of their body weight, a condition known as Seasonal Weight Loss (SWL) that is one of the major constraints in ruminant production. Breeds with high tolerance to SWL are relevant to understand the physiological responses to pasture scarcity so they could be used in programs for animal breeding. In the Canary Islands there are two dairy goat breeds with different levels of tolerance to SWL: the Palmera, susceptible to SWL; and the Majorera, tolerant to SWL. Fat is one of the milk components most affected by environmental and physiological conditions. This study hypothesises that feed-restriction affects Majorera and Palmera breeds differently, leading to different fatty acid profiles in the mammary gland and milk. An interaction between breed and feed-restriction was observed in the mammary gland. Feed-restriction was associated with an increase in oleic acid and a decrease in palmitic acid percentage in the Palmera breed whereas no differences were observed in the Majorera breed. Palmitic and oleic acids together constituted around 60% of the total fatty acids identified, which suggests that Palmera breed is more susceptible to SWL. In milk, feed-restriction affected both breeds similarly. Regarding the interaction of the breed with the treatment, we also observed similar responses in both breeds, but this influence affects only around 2% of the total fatty acids. In general, Majorera breed is more tolerant to feed-restriction.

Abstract
Over the last two decades, technological advancements in the field of proteomics have advanced our understanding of the complex biological systems of living organisms. Techniques based on mass spectrometry (MS) have emerged as powerful tools to contextualise existing genomic information and to create quantitative protein profiles from plasma, tissues or cell lines of various species. Proteomic approaches have been used increasingly in veterinary science to investigate biological processes responsible for growth, reproduction and pathological events. However, the adoption of proteomic approaches by veterinary investigators lags behind that of researchers in the human medical field. Furthermore, in contrast to human proteomics studies, interpretation of veterinary proteomic data is difficult due to the limited protein databases available for many animal species. This review article examines the current use of advanced proteomics techniques for evaluation of animal health and welfare and covers the current status of clinical veterinary proteomics research, including successful protein identification and data interpretation studies. It includes a description of an emerging tool, sequential window acquisition of all theoretical fragment ion mass spectra (SWATH-MS), available on selected mass spectrometry instruments. This newly developed data acquisition technique combines advantages of discovery and targeted proteomics approaches, and thus has the potential to advance the veterinary proteomics field by enhancing identification and reproducibility of proteomics data.

Abstract
Proteomics is a field of growing importance in animal and aquatic sciences. Similar to other proteomic approaches, top-down proteomics is slowly making its way within the vast array of proteomic approaches that researchers have access to. This opinion and mini-review article is dedicated to top-down proteomics and how its use can be of importance to animal and aquatic sciences. Herein, we include an overview of the principles of top-down proteomics and how it differs regarding other more commonly used proteomic methods, especially bottom-up proteomics. In addition, we provide relevant sections on how the approach was or can be used as a research tool and conclude with our opinions of future use in animal and aquatic sciences.
