Update on Congenital Myopathies in Adulthood

Congenital myopathies (CMs) constitute a group of heterogenous rare inherited muscle diseases with different incidences. They are traditionally grouped based on characteristic histopathological findings revealed on muscle biopsy. In recent decades, the ever-increasing application of modern genetic technologies has not just improved our understanding of their pathophysiology, but also expanded their phenotypic spectrum and contributed to a more genetically based approach for their classification. Later onset forms of CMs are increasingly recognised. They are often considered milder with slower progression, variable clinical presentations and different modes of inheritance. We reviewed the key features and genetic basis of late onset CMs with a special emphasis on those forms that may first manifest in adulthood.

Fingerprint inclusions in normal fetal muscle

In muscle disease, fingerprint inclusions are variously described as a diagnostic or non-specific alteration. Fingerprint inclusions identified in human fetal muscle suggest these bodies may be transient structures of developmental significance accounting for their infrequent occurrence in myopathies of diverse pathogenesis and clinical expression.

Centronuclear myopathy with type I fibre hypotrophy and "fingerprint" inclusions associated with Marfan's syndrome

The authors present results of histological and electron-microscopical investigations of muscular tissue obtained by biopsy from a 20-year-old man, who showed typical features of Marfan's syndrome associated with slowly progressive muscular weakness. The muscle showed a peculiar combination of centronuclear myopathy with hypotrophy of type I fibres and the so called "fingerprint myopathy". The combination of such myopathic phenomena with Marfan's syndrome presents a unique and hitherto undescribed condition.

Fingerprint inclusions and circular structures in the muscle. Report of a case

Fingerprint inclusions, circular structures of unknown origin, mitochondrial changes, dilatation of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, rods of Z-line material, elongated T-systems, honeycombs, and myelin figures were present in some damaged muscle fibres. Many damaged fibres showed loss of myofilaments and groups of atrophied fibres occurred. The muscle biopsy was from the left biceps brachii and presented also the changes of polymyositis. The patient had muscle weakness, malignant hypertension, alcoholism, polyarthropathy, and evidence of mild peripheral neuropathy.

Fingerprint body myopathy: a report of twins

Ultramicroscopic changes of subsarcolemmal fingerprints in the muscle of children with infantile hypotonia and weakness may represent a specific congenital entity. Four children have been reported so far. The two children reported in the present paper are the first full siblings to be described and, in addition, are identical twins. Four of these six children also had mental retardation, which suggests that this disorder may carry with it a significant risk of central nervous system abnormality.
