Strategic In/Visibility of Turkish Egg Donors: Reproductive Labor, Secrecy, and Stigma in the Transnational Bioeconomy

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a Northern Cypriot clinic, I examine how practices of secrecy function as strategic tools for invisibilization in the lived realities of Turkish egg donors engaged in an illicit, gendered, and stigmatized form of reproductive labor, both within and across national borders. Combining feminist studies of reproductive labor with an analysis of secrecy, stigma, and dirty work, I adopt a notion of secrecy as an embodied social practice to explore ethnographically how secrecy is integral to the bioavailability of Turkish egg donors. Secret practices enable these young women to intimately navigate gendered moral, health, socio-legal, and financial concerns within the challenging wider context of restrictive reproductive biopolitics, a legally ambigious cross-border biomedical market, fragile socio-economic conditions, and a heteropatriarchal sexual culture in Turkey. For Turkish egg donors, who opt for strategic invisibilization, moral and financial concerns sometimes override health and legal considerations. Secrecy sustains this transnational bioeconomy while simultaneously concealing its exploitative harms and risks.

Between Solidarity and Conflict: Tactical Biosociality of Turkish Egg Donors

Based on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews conducted with Turkish egg donors at a Northern Cypriot clinic, this article investigates tactical biosociality of cross-border egg donors that allows them to manage social relations and orient themselves in transnational egg donation (including the processes from recruitment to self-management in and beyond the clinic) under legally restrictive and socially stigmatizing conditions. Addressing the social and collective dimensions of tactics and recognizing the fragmented and conflictual forms of biosociality, it aims to shed light on the complex and ambivalent aspects of tactical biosociality in relation to selective disclosure and stigma within the context of transnational egg donation. Tactical biosociality involves possibilities for solidarity and alliances, and also for conflict and competition among egg donors. It is because for young Turkish women, egg donation retains both gendered moral and financial values that must be tactically negotiated while navigating the wider context of heteropatriarchal cultural norms and expectations, precarious economic and social conditions, biomedical profit and biopolitical control.

Assisted reproduction and Middle East kinship: a regional and religious comparison

This article compares the use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and resultant kinship formations in four Middle Eastern settings: the Sunni Muslim Arab world, the Sunni Muslim but officially 'secular' country of Turkey, Shia Muslim Iran and Jewish Israel. This four-way comparison reveals considerable similarities, as well as stark differences, in matters of Middle Eastern kinship and assisted reproduction. The permissions and restrictions on ART, often determined by religious decrees, may lead to counter-intuitive outcomes, many of which defy prevailing stereotypes about which parts of the Middle East are more 'progressive' or 'conservative'. Local considerations - be they social, cultural, economic, religious or political - have shaped the ways in which ART treatments are offered to, and received by, infertile couples in different parts of the Middle East. Yet, across the region, clerics, in dialogue with clinicians and patients, have paved the way for ART practices that have had significant implications for Middle Eastern kinship and family life.

Donor insemination: Israel as a representative case of a competitive market examining the possibility of policy reform

AIM

To measure the private and social benefits of donor insemination (DI).

METHODS

An empirical model investigates the general public and DI clients' willingness to pay (WTP) for DI, and the willingness of potential donors to become altruistic or paid sperm donors.

RESULTS

The general public and DI clients value DI and have a positive WTP for it, whereas willingness to donate, altruistically or for payment, is either low or very low.

CONCLUSION

The general public's and DI clients' WTP for DI is in average above actual cost, so the government should consider funding or subsidizing DI. The government should encourage altruistic gamete donation through information and education of all parties involved directly and indirectly in the process of donation whose ultimate goal is the birth of a child.

Le don de sperme en Israël, son secret et son anonymat

Le secret et l’anonymat du don de sperme sont très forts en Israël. Ce mode est préféré par les couples inféconds et semble faciliter leur adaptation à la parentalité à long terme. Dans les communautés religieuses juives orthodoxes, ce don est, tout au plus, toléré à la condition paradoxale que le donneur soit d’ascendance non juive pour éviter un futur mariage incestueux ou consanguin. Bien que le nombre de couples inféconds n’ait pas diminué, la proportion des couples recevant un don de sperme ne cesse de baisser. Il n’est plus que de 20 à 25 % des receveurs de dons, la grande majorité, 75 à 80 %, étant constituée de femmes seules plutôt âgées. Lorsque l’enfant grandit, ces dernières désirent souvent qu’il puisse connaître son père biologique. La réussite du don de sperme à long terme exige aussi du médecin qu’il sache prendre en considération les sensibilités des personnes qu’il traite. Aussi, de même que l’importation de sperme de donneurs d’ascendance non juive est autorisée, il faudrait permettre le recrutement de donneurs sous un double régime: le régime de l’anonymat surtout pour les couples inféconds et le régime de « l’accessibilité » surtout pour les femmes seules.

Strategies for disclosure: how parents approach telling their children that they were conceived with donor gametes

OBJECTIVE

To describe how parents envision, plan, and enact disclosing to their children that they were conceived with donor gametes.

DESIGN

In-depth ethnographic interviews.

SETTING

Participants were recruited from 11 medical infertility practices and 1 sperm bank in Northern California.

PATIENT(S)

A total of 141 married couples who had conceived a child using donor gametes (62 with donor sperm and 79 with donor oocytes).

INTERVENTION(S)

Husbands and wives were interviewed together and separately.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

Thematic analysis of interview transcripts.

RESULT(S)

Disclosing parents predominantly subscribed to one of two disclosure strategies: the conviction that early disclosure is of paramount importance so that the child "always knows," or the belief that later disclosure is preferable after family routines have been established and the child has the maturity to understand biologic concepts and has developed a sense of discretion. No parent regretted disclosing, and many expressed relief.

CONCLUSION(S)

Parents choosing early disclosure were more at ease with the disclosure process, whereas parents choosing later disclosure reported greater uncertainty about how and when to disclose. Parents wished for more peer and/or professional support and guidance to assist them with disclosure, not only initially but continuing long after their children were born.
