Social isolation, loneliness, death stress and life satisfaction in older adults: A serial mediation study

This study aims to examine the mediating role of loneliness on the relationship between social isolation and life satisfaction among older adults and tests a mechanism through which social isolation exerts its menacing effects through a sequential model of loneliness and death distress. Data came from 548 community-dwelling older adults in rural settings in Turkey. They completed some demographic information including sex, age and measures of social isolation, loneliness, death distress, and life satisfaction. The results showed that loneliness and death distress exacerbated the negative effects of social isolation on life satisfaction. Loneliness and death distress served as a sequential mediating role in the association between social isolation and life satisfaction. Older adults with higher social isolation experience heightened loneliness and death distress, and worsening levels of life satisfaction. Greater experience of loneliness in sequence with greater levels of death distress mediated the relationship between life satisfaction and social isolation.

From dread to disorder: A meta-analysis of the impact of death anxiety on mental illness symptoms

Growing research suggests that death anxiety may be transdiagnostic, playing a key role in the development and symptomology of psychopathology. This meta-analysis examined the relationship between death anxiety and mental illness symptoms. In total, 104 papers were included, representing cross-sectional data from 99 studies (ntotal = 24,434), and experimental data from 11 studies (ntotal = 1372). Meta-analyses of cross-sectional studies indicated a moderate correlation (r = 0.397) between death anxiety and overall mental illness symptoms. The clinical nature of the group emerged as a significant moderator of this effect. In addition, the relationship between death anxiety and mental illness symptoms was larger for clinical samples (r = 0.580), and for anxiety-related symptoms (r = 0.506) than for depression. Additional meta-analyses of 11 mortality salience studies revealed that death reminders had an overall moderate impact on clinical symptoms (Hedge's g = 0.481). The relevance of the sample to the symptom being measured significantly predicted this relationship; that is, the effect was moderate-to-large (Hedge's g = 0.671) when excluding comparison subgroups for which the effect was not predicted by the authors. The clinical nature of the sample did not significantly moderate the effect. The experimental studies were generally of higher quality and lower risk of publication bias compared to cross-sectional studies. These findings support the strong transdiagnostic role of death anxiety across numerous disorders. Clinical implications include the potential need to treat death anxiety directly, to maximise long-term therapy benefits.

Relationship between coping strategies and change in symptom severity in contamination-focused OCD patients during the COVID-19: a one-year follow-up

OBJECTIVE

To examine the relationship between coping strategies and the change in symptom severity in contamination-focused OCD patients during the COVID-19 pandemic over a one-year follow-up.

METHODS

In March 2020, a one-year follow-up study was initiated with 56 contamination-focused OCD patients in Turkey. Coping strategies were evaluated using the COPE scale. OCD symptom severity was assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) at the beginning and end of the year. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale was administered mid-year.

RESULTS

One year post the onset of COVID-19, 68% of patients showed increased OCD symptom severity, while 32% displayed a decrease. Higher scores on the fear of COVID-19 scale and lower acceptance scores from COPE subscales were correlated with increased OCD symptom severity.

CONCLUSIONS

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified OCD symptoms in a substantial proportion of patients, particularly those with heightened fears related to the pandemic, and reduced acceptance-based coping strategies. Tailored interventions emphasising adaptive coping mechanisms may benefit OCD patients in managing their symptoms during external stressors like pandemics.

Harmony found: Serenity's crucial role in alleviating death anxiety through attachment styles among community-dwelling older adults

OBJECTIVE

Explore the mediating effect of serenity in the relationships between attachment styles and death anxiety among older adults DESIGN: A descriptive correlational research design following Strengthening Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines.

METHODS

Data were collected from 250 older adults attending three clubs.

TOOLS

Arabic Scale of Death Anxiety, Brief Serenity Scale, and Revised Adult Attachment Scale were used to collect data.

RESULTS

Most participants exhibited high levels of serenity, with varying degrees of attachment styles and death anxiety. Correlation analysis indicates significant negative associations between death anxiety and serenity, as well as attachment styles. Secure attachment styles were positively correlated with serenity and negatively with death anxiety. Path analysis revealed that serenity partially mediated the relationship between attachment styles and death anxiety.

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS

Fostering secure attachments and promoting serenity to mitigate death anxiety in older adults, enhancing later-life psychological well-being through informed interventions.

Death Anxiety in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders

Objective: Death anxiety has long been attributed a role as a psychopathologically decisive factor in the development of mental illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For example, patients with washing compulsions associate their behavior with a fear of life-threatening diseases or patients with control compulsions report that the constant checking is driven by the fear of fatal or deadly consequences for the occupants.Method: The Bochum Questionnaire to Assess Death Anxiety and Attitudes Towards Death (BOFRETTA) was administered to 31 patients with OCD and 31 healthy volunteers within a semi-structured interview using broad psychometry.Results: OCD patients showed increased death anxiety and negative attitute to death in comparison to healthy volunteers. A significant correlation was found between BOFRETTA-anxiety and the currently present religious obsessive thoughts.Conclusions: Our investigation provides further findings on the role of death anxiety and the problematic attitude towards death in OCD patients.

Death anxiety and its relationship with family function and meaning in life in patients with advanced cancer-A cross-sectional survey in China

OBJECTIVE

This study explores the factors influencing death anxiety in patients with advanced cancer, and to investigate the role of family function on death anxiety, and the correlation between meaning in life and death anxiety.

METHODS

Patients with advanced cancer who were hospitalized in three institutions from November 2020 to May 2021 were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The Chinese version of the Death and Dying Distress Scale, Meaning in Life Scale For Advanced Cancer Patients and Family APGAR Index were used to assess death anxiety, meaning in life and family function. Pain symptoms were evaluated by the Numeric Rating Scale. Karnofsky Performance Status, patients' socio-demographic and clinical variables were also recorded. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows (version 26.0). Multivariate regression analysis was performed to examine the correlations of social-demographic and clinical variables with family function and death anxiety.

RESULTS

Three hundred and twenty-eight patients with advanced cancer were included in this study. The results showed that 12.2% of patients experienced moderate to severe death anxiety. Meaning in Life Scale For Advanced Cancer Patients (acceptance of death, controlling one's life), types of institution (oncology department of tertiary hospitals), self-perceived economic burden (extreme), Karnofsky Performance Status score, age, and medical insurance status (self-paid, inter-provincial medical insurance) were identified as associated factors of death anxiety (R ² ​= ​0.335, F ​= ​20.072, P ​< ​0.001). Patients with good family function scores had significantly low level of death anxiety in univariate analysis (F ​= ​5.892, P ​= ​0.003). Multivariate analysis revealed no significant association between family function and death anxiety.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results demonstrated that the oncology department of a tertiary hospital, extremely high of self-perceived economic burden, self-pay, and inter-provincial medical insurance might be associated with higher death anxiety in patients with advanced cancer. Lower level death anxiety was associated with higher level acceptance of death, a greater sense of life control, better physical performance, and older age. Further confirmation about the association between family function and death anxiety in patients with advanced cancer is warranted in the future.
