Abstract
We report herein the synthesis of an unprecedented isomer of perylene, dicyclohepta[cd,fg]-as-indacene bearing two phenyl groups (1-Ph) by the nickel-mediated intramolecular homocoupling of a 4,4'-biazulene derivative (2). The X-ray crystallographic analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that 1-Ph adopts a unique helically twisted geometry although the local aromaticity of azulene moieties was preserved. The double covalent linkage of the two azulene skeletons imparts significant orbital interaction, which affords near-infrared (NIR) absorption (up to 1720 nm) and remarkable redox behaviors despite its closed-shell electronic structure. The optical band gap of 1-Ph is calculated to be 0.72 eV from its absorption onset, which is one of the narrowest values among the hitherto reported air-stable non-benzenoid PAHs. Furthermore, the thin-film of 1-Ph serves as a p-type semiconductor. Our study offers fundamental insights into not only the aromaticity with the nonalternant topologies of 1-Ph but also its potential application in novel organic electronics.

Abstract
Incorporation of a thieno[3,2-b]thiophene into an isophlorinoid-like framework alters the aromaticity by extending the macrocyclic π-circuit. Their opto-electronic and aromatic properties significantly differ from other 22π and 34π porphyrinoids. Among the three different 34π hexaphyrins, furan based hexaphyrin adopts a non-aromatic 'figure-of-eight' conformation. Replacing all the furans either by thiophene or selenophene induces a planar conformation with aromatic characteristics. Spectro-electrochemical studies revealed reversible two-electron ring oxidation to yield their 4nπ dicationic species respectively.

Abstract
A triply linked dicarbacorrole dimer (7) was synthesized from a new meso-meso singly linked dicarbacorrole dimer precursor (6) via an oxidative fusion reaction by 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH). Single crystal X-ray structure of 7 adopts a flat conformation with a length as ca. 15.946 Å and a width as 6.903 Å, which can be regarded as a short carbaporphyrinoid tape. Two coordinated Cu ions keeps the +3 oxidation state in 7, as confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This is in sharp contrast to the Osuka's triply linked tetrapyrrolic corrole dimers, where the inner 3NH form is not stable and thus can only act as a divalent ligand. Due to the non-aromatic nature of dicarbacorrole macrocycle, the largely decreased HOMO-LUMO gap and red-shifted absorption of 7 are best ascribed to the strong electronic interaction between two dipyrromethene-type chromophores. To our knowledge, this is the first fully fused carbaporphyrinoid dimer with β-β, meso-meso, β-β triply linkages prepared to date.

Abstract
The direct oxidations of meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin using cetyltrimethylammonium permanganate (CTAP), RuCl3/Oxone/base or Ag+/oxalic acid each generate distinctive product mixtures that may contain, inter alia, porpho-mono-, di-, and trilactones. The CTAP and RuCl3/Oxone/base oxidations also generate a unique open chain tripyrrin derived from the degradation of a porpholactone oxazolone moiety. Thus, its formation and structure are distinctly different from all biological or nearly all other nonbiological biliverdin-like linear porphyrinoid degradation products that are derived from ring cleavages between the pyrrolic building blocks.

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is widely applied as a reliable tool in clinical diagnosis, including immunoassays, cancer biomarker detection, etc. Metal complexes with emission in the near-infrared (NIR) range possess distinct features such as high transmission and minimal tissue auto-absorption, making them versatile for applications in biosensing and other fields. Through ECL spectral studies of an O-linked nonaromatic benzitripyrrin (C^N^N^N) macrocyclic palladium complex (Pd1) with multiple pyrrole structures, we observed emission peaks from the Qx(0,0) and its vibronic Qx(0,1) bands during both photoluminescence (PL) and ECL. Notably, the emission from the Qx(0,1) band was significantly enhanced in the ECL spectrum, demonstrating higher selectivity for near-infrared light at 743 nm. In the ECL annihilation pathway, the appearance of ECL signals showed a strong correlation with the redox processes of the tri-pyrrin structure, revealing a cyclic tri-pyrrin ligand-centered nature with contributions from the metal center. Upon the introduction of tripropylamine (TPrA) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) coreactants, the ECL signals exhibited enhancements ranging from several hundred to tens of times. Various reaction routes within different coreactant systems are extensively discussed. Additionally, the absolute quantum efficiencies of the Pd1/TPrA coreactant system were determined, showing efficiencies of 0.0032% ± 0.0005% and 0.000074% ± 0.000016% during pulsing and CV scan processes, respectively. This work addresses gaps in the study of palladacycle complexes in ECL and provides insights into the design of NIR luminescent structures that contribute to the fast screening and deep tissue penetration bioimaging techniques.

Abstract
Carbaporphyrin dimers, investigated for their distinctive electronic structures and exceptional properties, have predominantly consisted of systems containing identical subunits. This study addresses the associated knowledge gap by focusing on asymmetric carbaporphyrin dimers with Janus-like characteristics. The synthesis of a Janus-type carbaporphyrin pseudo-dimer 5 is presented. It displays antiaromatic characteristics on the fused side and nonaromatic behavior on the unfused side. A newly synthesized tetraphenylene (TPE) linked bis-dibenzihomoporphyrin 8 and a previously reported dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC) linked bis-dicarbacorrole 9 were prepared as controls. Comprehensive analyses, including 1H NMR spectral studies, single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations, validate the mixed character of 5. A further feature of the Janus pseudo-dimer 5 is that it may be transformed into a heterometallic complex, with one side coordinating a Cu(III) center and the other stabilizing a BODIPY complex. This disparate regiochemical reactivity underscores the potential of carbaporphyrin dimers as versatile frameworks, with electronic features and site-specific coordination chemistry controlled through asymmetry. These findings position carbaporphyrin dimers as promising candidates for advances in electronic structure studies, coordination chemistry, materials science, and beyond.

Abstract
Azulene-based conjugated systems are of great interests due to their unusual structures and photophysical properties. Incorporation of a transition metal into azulene skeleton presents an intriguing opportunity to combine the dπ-pπ and pπ-pπ conjugated properties. No such metallaazulene skeleton however has been reported to date. Here, we describe our development of an efficient [5 + 2] annulation reaction to rapid construction of a unique metal-containing [5-5-7] scaffold, termed metalla-dual-azulene (MDA), which includes a metallaazulene and a metal-free organic azulene intertwined by sharing the tropylium motif. The two azulene motifs in MDA exhibit distinct reactivities. The azulene motif readily undergoes nucleophilic addition, leading to N-, O- and S-substituted cycloheptanetrienyl species. Demetalation of the metallaazulene moiety occurs when it reacts with nBu4NF, which enables highly selective recognition of fluoride anion and a noticeable color change. The practical [5 + 2] annulation methodology, facile functional-group modification, high and selective fluoride detection make this new π-conjugated polycyclic system very suitable for potential applications in photoelectric and sensing materials.

Abstract
Fluorene-based tripyrrane has been used as a fused precursor to synthesize three novel examples of nonaromatic meso-fused thia and selenabenzihomoporphyrin(2.1.1.1)s by condensing it with appropriate 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)aryl thiophene or selenophene under acid catalyzed conditions. The meso-fused heterobenzihomoporphyrins contain one fluorene unit, two pyrrole rings and one thiophene/selenophene ring connected via five meso-carbons in the macrocyclic framework. The macrocycles were thoroughly characterized by HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, absorption, cyclic voltammetry and DFT/TD-DFT studies. NMR, absorption, and DFT studies indicated the nonaromatic nature of meso-fused heterobenzihomoporphyrins. The macrocycles displayed one intense band at ∼380 nm along with a shoulder band at 450 nm and a broad band in the region of 590-850 nm which were bathochromically shifted in the monoprotonated derivatives and absorbed prominently in the NIR region with the peak maxima at ∼1035 nm. The electrochemical studies revealed that the macrocycles showed three well-defined oxidations and reductions, and TD-DFT studies corroborated experimental observations.

Abstract
Pyrazoloporphyrins (PzPs), which are porphyrin analogues incorporating a pyrazole subunit, are examples of carbaporphyrin-type structures with a carbon atom within the macrocyclic cavity. DFT calculations were used to assess a series of 17 PzP tautomers, nine monoprotonated species and four related diprotonated PzP dications. The geometries of the structures were optimized using M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p), and the relative stabilities computed with the cc-PVTZ functional. Nucleus independent chemical shifts, both NICS(0) and NICS(1)zz, were calculated, and the anisotropy of the induced current density (AICD) plots were generated for all of the species under investigation. The results for free base PzPs show that fully aromatic PzP tautomers are not significantly more stable than weakly aromatic cross-conjugated species. In addition, strongly aromatic structures with internal CH2's are much less stable, a feature that is also seen for protonated PzPs. The degree of planarity for the individual macrocycles does not significantly correlate with the stability of these structures. The results allow significant aromatic conjugation pathways to be identified in many cases, and provide insights into the aromatic properties of this poorly studied system. These investigations also complement experimental results for PzPs and emphasize the need for further studies in this area.

Abstract
The world of modified porphyrins changed forever when an N-confused porphyrin (NCP), a porphyrin isomer, was first published in 1994. The replacement of one inner nitrogen with a carbon atom revolutionised the chemistry that one is able to perform within the coordination cavity. One could explore new pathways in the organometallic chemistry of porphyrins by forcing a carbon fragment from the ring or an inner substituent to sit close to an inserted metal ion. Since the NCP discovery, a series of modifications became available to tune the coordination properties of the cavity, introducing a fascinating realm of carbaporphyrins. The review surveys all possible carbatetraphyrins(1.1.1.1) and their spectacular coordination and organometallic chemistry.

Abstract
Two cyclic carbaporphyrin arrays (trimer 6 and tetramer 7) were synthesized from a dibrominated carbaporphyrin precursor (5) via a one-pot Yamamoto-type coupling. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 6 and 7 contain three and four covalently linked carbaporphyrin (formally dicarbacorrole) units, respectively. Trimer 6 adopts a roughly planar conformation and tetramer 7 adopts an up-and-down zig-zag conformation. Both 6 and 7 contain a [n]cyclo-meta-phenylene ([n]CMP) core, namely, [6]- and [8]CMP for 6 and 7, respectively. Transient absorption (TA) anisotropy and pump-power-dependent excited-state decay studies provided evidence for excitation energy transfer (EET) within both trimer 6 and tetramer 7. The exciton energy hopping (EEH) times were estimated to be 18 and 35 ps for 6 and 7, respectively, as inferred from pump-power-dependent TA measurements. Since the center-to-center distances between adjacent carbaporphyrin units are similar in 6 and 7, the different EEH times are attributed to differences in the orientation of the transition dipoles in these two congeneric arrays. The orientation factor κ2, the key parameter defining the Förster resonance energy transfer efficiency, was calculated to be 2.15 and 1.03 for 6 and 7, respectively, a finding that supports the shorter excitation energy hopping time seen in the case of trimer 6. To our knowledge, this is the first time that covalently linked cyclic carbaporphyrin arrays were synthesized using a single carbaporphyrin as the starting point and that EET between carbaporphyrin subunits constrained within a well-defined polycyclic framework has been correlated with structural differences.

Abstract
The unique environment within the core of carbaporphyrinoid systems provides a platform to explore unusual organometallic chemistry. The ability of these structures to form stable organometallic derivatives was first demonstrated for N-confused porphyrins but many other carbaporphyrin-type systems were subsequently shown to exhibit similar or complementary properties. Metalation commonly occurs with catalytically active transition metal cations and the resulting derivatives exhibit widely different physical, chemical and spectroscopic properties and range from strongly aromatic to nonaromatic and antiaromatic species. Metalation may trigger unusual, highly selective, oxidation reactions. Alkyl group migration has been observed within the cavity of metalated carbaporphyrins, and in some cases ring contraction of the carbocyclic subunit takes place. Over the past thirty years, studies in this area have led to multiple synthetic routes to carbaporphyrinoid ligands and remarkable organometallic chemistry has been reported. An overview of this important area is presented.

Abstract
Earth-abundant metal-based theranostics, agents that integrate diagnostic and therapeutic functions within the same molecule, may hold the key to the development of low-cost personalized medicines. Here, we report a set of O-linked nonaromatic benzitripyrrin (C^N^N^N) macrocyclic organonickel(II) complexes, Ni-1-4, containing strong σ-donating M-C bonds. Complexes Ni-1-4 are characterized by a square-planar coordination geometry as inferred from the structural studies of Ni-1. They integrate photothermal therapy, photothermal imaging, and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) within one system. This makes them attractive as potential phototheranostics. Relative to traditional Ni(II) porphyrins, such as F20TPP (tetrapentafluorophenylporphyrin), the lowest energy absorption of Ni-1 is shifted into the near infrared region, presumably as a consequence of Ni-C bonding. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations revealed that, upon photoexcitation, a higher population of ligand-centered and 3MLCT states is seen in Ni-1 relative to NiTPBP (TPBP = 6,11,16,21-tetraphenylbenziporphyrin). Encapsulating Ni-1 in 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(polyethylene glycol)-2000] (DSPE-PEG2000) afforded nanoparticles, Ni-1@DSPE, displaying red-shifted absorption features, as well as good photothermal conversion efficiency (∼45%) in aqueous media. Proof-of-principle experiments involving thrombus treatment were carried out both in vitro and in vivo. It was found that Ni-1@DSPE in combination with 785 nm photo-irradiation for 3 min (0.3 W/cm2) proved successful in removing blood clots from a mouse thrombus model as monitored by photoacoustic imaging (PAI). The present work highlights the promise of organonickel(II) complexes as potential theranostics and the benefits that can accrue from manipulating the excited-state features of early transition-metal complexes via, for example, interrupting π-conjugation pathways.

Abstract
The replacement of one or more pyrrolic building block(s) of a porphyrin by a nonpyrrolic heterocycle leads to the formation of so-called pyrrole-modified porphyrins (PMPs), porphyrinoids of broad structural variability. The wide range of coordination environments (type, number, charge, and architecture of the donor atoms) that the pyrrole-modified frameworks provide to the central metal ions, the frequent presence of donor atoms at their periphery, and their often observed nonplanarity or conformational flexibility distinguish the complexes of the PMPs clearly from those of the traditional square-planar, dianionic, N4-coordinating (hydro)porphyrins. Their different coordination properties suggest their utilization in areas beyond which regular metalloporphyrins are suitable. Following a general introduction to the synthetic methodologies available to generate pyrrole-modified porphyrins, their general structure, history, coordination chemistry, and optical properties, this Review highlights the chemical, electronic (optical), and structural differences of specific classes of metalloporphyrinoids containing nonpyrrolic heterocycles. The focus is on macrocycles with similar "tetrapyrrolic" architectures as porphyrins, thusly excluding the majority of expanded porphyrins. We highlight the relevance and application of these metal complexes in biological and technical fields as chemosensors, catalysts, photochemotherapeutics, or imaging agents. This Review provides an introduction to the field of metallo-PMPs as well as a comprehensive snapshot of the current state of the art of their synthesis, structures, and properties. It also aims to provide encouragement for the further study of these intriguing and structurally versatile metalloporphyrinoids.

Abstract
Metal porphyrins, which possess metal-N coordination centers, are important building blocks for the construction of porous organic materials with catalytic performance. However, most of the previous work has focused on controlling the metal elements instead of the metal-N coordinations. Here, Pt(II) N-confused porphyrin and Pt(II) porphyrin based conjugated microporous polymers were synthesized by Yamamoto coupling reaction. The structural and property differences of Pt-N3C and Pt-N4 were studied. Calculations demonstrate that the Pt-N3C-based porous polymer exhibits broader photoabsorption and narrower bandgap than conventional Pt-N4-based porous polymers.

Abstract
It seems interesting to adopt the idea of dance in the context of the arrangement of molecular blocks in the building of molecular systems. Just as various dances can create various feelings, the nature and arrangement of molecular blocks in the generated molecular system can induce different properties. We consider obtaining such “dancing” systems in which the still little-known azulene moieties are involved. The dark blue nonbenzenoid aromatic azulene has one less axis of symmetry relative to the two axes of its isomer, i.e., the fully benzenoid naphthalene, acquiring valuable properties as a result that can be used successfully in technical applications. In a dancing system, the azulene moieties can be connected directly, or a more or less complex spacer can be inserted between them. Several azulene moieties can form a linear oligomer or a polymer and the involvement of azulene moieties in nonlinear molecules, such as crown ethers, calixarenes, azuliporphyrins, or azulenophane, is a relatively new and intensely studied topic. Some aspects are covered in this review, which are mainly related to obtaining the mentioned azulene compounds and less to their characterization or physico-chemical properties.

Abstract
The highlight of this article is the recent progress in the state-of-the-art synthetic design and isolation of artificial porphyrinoids by swapping pyrrole component(s) with diverse functionalized pyrrolic(heterocyclic)/carbacycle building block(s) to compare the impact on the electronic absorption spectra and aromaticity of the incorporated isomeric/expanded porphyrinoids. Attention has been directed towards five distinct criteria of utilizing functionalized pyrrolic(heterocyclic)/aromatic hydrocarbons as synthons for NIR absorbing aromatic isomeric (N-confusion)/expanded porphyrinoids (with five/six heterocycles): (i) fused or annelated pyrrole (heterocycle), (ii) functionalized bi-pyrrole/bi-thiophene/bi-furan building blocks, (iii) azulene based carbacycle building block, (iv) vinylogous aromatic carbacycle/heterocycle(s) building block and (v) N-confused pyrrole ring(s), and N-confused fused pyrrole ring(s) leading to π-extension. These hybrid porphyrinoids are ideal candidates for basic research into macrocyclic aromaticity and for many potential applications owing to NIR absorption.

Abstract
A series of tropone-fused porphyrinoids with unique spectroscopic features has been prepared. A dimethyl tropone-fused pyrrole was reacted with lead tetraacetate to give a bis(acetoxymethyl) derivative that condensed with an α-unsubstituted pyrrole tert-butyl ester to form a tripyrrane intermediate. Cleavage of the tert-butyl ester protective groups, followed by condensation with a series of aromatic dialdehydes and oxidation with DDQ, afforded the tropone-fused porphyrinoid systems. Reactions with pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and selenophene dialdehydes gave tropone-fused porphyrins and related heteroporphyrins. In addition, indene, 4-hydroxybenzene, and 3-hydroxypyridine dicarbaldehydes generated examples of carba-, oxybenzi-, and oxypyriporphyrins. The electronic absorption spectra of the tropone-fused porphyrinoids were greatly altered, showing shifts to longer wavelengths and the appearance of strong Q bands between 600 and 800 nm. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra were also very unusual, as the internal protons were strongly shifted upfield, in some cases giving rise to resonances that approached -10 ppm. However, the external protons showed reduced downfield shifts compared to porphyrinoids that do not have tropone ring fusion. The profound changes observed for these macrocycles demonstrate that the introduction of fused tropone units, together with other structural changes such as core modification, can provide the means by which porphyrinoids with unique spectroscopic properties can be accessed.

Abstract
As a continuation of research on 1-vinylazulenes synthesis, on their physico–chemical properties as well as on their use as colorimetric and electrochemical materials for the detection of heavy metals ions, new compounds, 4-(azulen-1-ylmethylene)-2-phenyloxazol-5(4H)-ones, are reported. The exceptional structure of azulene moiety with symmetrical electron distribution only with respect to the x-axis gives some special chemical and physical properties to compounds in which it is inserted. Various azulene-1-carbaldehydes and hippuric acids are condensed with good yields in Erlenmeyer—Plöchl reaction conditions. The obtained 1-vinylzulenes were characterized and their UV-Vis and NMR spectra were briefly discussed.

Abstract
ConspectusAzulene, an isomer of naphthalene, is a molecule of historical interest for its unusual photophysical properties, including a beautiful blue color derived from the narrow HOMO-LUMO energy gap and anti-Kasha fluorescence from S2 to S0. More recently, it has attracted increasing attention for its novel electronic structure, including an electron-rich five-membered ring and an electron-deficient seven-membered ring with a dipole moment of 1.08 D resulting from resonance delocalization, its different reactivities at odd and even positions, and its stimuli-responsive behavior. As a key building block, azulene has been used in various fields because of its unique physicochemical properties. Recent studies have demonstrated the great potential of azulene for constructing advanced organic materials. However, exploring azulene-based materials has long been hindered by challenges in molecular design and synthesis. Most of the reported azulene-based materials have the azulene unit incorporated through the five-membered ring or seven-membered ring. Creating azulene-based novel building blocks for optoelectronics and using 2,6-connected azulene units to construct conjugated polymers that can adequately utilize the "donor-acceptor" structure of azulene remained underexplored before our contributions. Besides, for most azulene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heteroaromatics, the azulene substructures were created during later synthesis stages, and the use of azulene derivatives as starting materials to design and synthesize PAHs and heteroaromatics intelligently is still limited. In this Account, we summarize our efforts on the design, synthesis, and applications of azulene-based π-functional materials. Our studies start with the creation of novel π-conjugated structures based on azulene. The design strategy, synthesis, and optoelectronic performance of the first class of azulene-based aromatic diimides, 2,2'-biazulene-1,1',3,3'-tetracarboxylic diimide (BAzDI) and its π-extended and π-bridged derivatives, are presented. Notably, antiparallel stacking between adjacent azulene units derived from azulene's dipole was observed in single crystals of BAzDI and its derivatives. Besides, we developed an azulene-fused isoindigo analogue, azulenoisoindigo, which combines the merits of both isoindigo and azulene, including reversible redox behavior and reversible proton responsiveness. Then we discuss our contributions to the design and synthesis of 2,6-azulene-based conjugated polymers. By incorporation of 2,6-connected azulene units into the polymeric backbone, two conjugated polymers with high organic field-effect transistor (OFET) performance were developed. Two 2,6-azulene-based polymers with proton responsiveness and high electrical conductivity upon protonation were also provided. We also discuss our recent studies on azulene-based heteroaromatics. Two azulene-fused BN-heteroaromatics were designed and synthesized, and they exhibited a selective response to fluoride ion and unexpected deboronization upon the addition of trifluoroacetic acid. An unexpected synthesis of azulene-pyridine-fused heteroaromatics (Az-Py) by reductive cyclization of 1-nitroazulenes and the OFET performance of Az-Py-1 are included. Afterward, we discuss several examples of azulene-capped organic conjugated molecules. The molecules capped with the five-membered ring of azulene favor hole transport, whereas the ones capped with the seven-membered ring favor electron transport.

Abstract
The non-alternant aromatic azulene, an isomer of alternant naphthalene, differs from the latter in peculiar properties. The large polarization of the π-electron system over the seven and five rings gives to azulene electrophile property a pronounced tendency to donate electrons to an acceptor, substituted at azulene 1 position. This paper presents cases in which azulene transfers electrons to a suitable acceptor as methylium ions, positive charged heteroaromatics and examples of neutral molecules that can accept electrons. The proposed product synthesis was outlined and the expected electron transfer was highlighted by analyzing the NMR, UV-Vis spectra and the pKR+ values.

Abstract
The nucleophilic substitution of aromatic moieties (SNAr) has been known for over 150 years and found wide use for the functionalization of (hetero)aromatic systems. Currently, several "types" of SNAr reactions have been established and notably the area of porphyrinoid macrocycles has seen many uses thereof. Herein, we detail the SNAr reactions of seven types of porphyrinoids with differing number and type of pyrrole units: subporphyrins, norcorroles, corroles, porphyrins, azuliporphyrins, N-confused porphyrins, and phthalocyanines. For each we analyze the substitution dependent upon: a) the type of nucleophile and b) the site of substitution (α, β, or meso). Along with this we evaluate this route as a synthetic strategy for the generation of unsymmetrical porphyrinoids. Distinct trends can be identified for each type of porphyrinoid discussed, regardless of nucleophile. The use of nucleophilic substitution on porphyrinoids is found to often be a cost-effective procedure with the ability to yield complex substituent patterns, which can be conducted in non-anhydrous solvents with easily accessible simple porphyrinoids.

Abstract
The conversion of meso-aryl-porphyrins/chlorins to porphyrinoids containing nonpyrrolic heterocycles (so-called pyrrole-modified porphyrins, PMPs) along an approach we dubbed "the breaking and mending of porphyrins" is well known. However, examples are limited to the synthesis of PMPs containing up to six-membered heterocycles; the syntheses of larger rings failed. We report here hitherto unavailable eight-membered chlorin-type PMPs using an inverted "mending and breaking" approach. All examples are based on the addition of N,N'-dimethylurea derivatives to a meso-phenyl-β,β'-dioxoporphyrin, followed by oxidative cleavage of the intermediate diol adduct. We correlate the extremely nonplanar solid-state structures of three crystallographically characterized PMPs containing an eight-membered ring with their solution-state optical properties. The first examples of bis-modified, bacteriochlorin-type PMPs containing either two eight-membered rings or an eight-membered ring and an imidazolone ring are also detailed. Using other N,N'-nucleophiles failed to either generate chlorins containing a β,β'-dihydroxypyrroline, a prerequisite for the "breaking step," or the cleavage of those substrates that did generate a diol underwent subsequent reactions that thwarted the generation of the desired PMPs. This contribution adds novel PMPs containing eight-membered rings, highlights the effects these derivatizations have on the macrocycle conformation, and how that affects their optical properties.

Abstract
Examples of internally alkylated azuliporphyrins were prepared by MacDonald-type “3 + 1” condensations. 2-Methyl- and 2-ethylazulene reacted with an acetoxymethylpyrrole in the presence of an acid catalyst to give azulitripyrranes. Following cleavage of the terminal protective groups, condensation with a diformylpyrrole in the presence of hydrochloric acid and oxidation with ferric chloride afforded 21-alkylazuliporphyrins. An azulene dialdehyde similarly reacted with an [Formula: see text]-methyltripyrrane to generate a 23-methylazuliporphyrin. The products could only be isolated in protonated form and the free-base internally alkylated azuliporphyrins proved to be unstable. Nevertheless, the dications are highly diatropic and the internal alkyl group resonances were shifted upfield to beyond -3 ppm. Reaction of a 23-methylazuliporphyrin with palladium(II) acetate primarily afforded a palladium(II) complex with loss of the internal methyl substituent. However, two palladium(II) benzocarbaporphyrins were also identified that were formed by sequential oxidative ring contraction and methyl group migration. Internally alkylated azuliporphyrins provide new insights into the reactivity of the system and the results show that the introduction of alkyl substituents within porphyrinoid cavities greatly modifies the properties of these structures.

Abstract
Tropiporphyrins are an intriguing class of carbaporphyrinoids that incorporate a cycloheptatriene subunit. Previous investigations have shown that this system acts as a trianionic ligand that can form stable silver(III) complexes. In this work, tropiporphyrin was reacted with excess methyl iodide and potassium carbonate in refluxing acetone to give an internally alkylated derivative. The reaction occurred regioselectively to introduce a methyl group onto the 24-position. Reaction with palladium(II) acetate afforded a palladium(II) complex that retained the [Formula: see text]-methyl substituent. In contrast, reaction of [Formula: see text]-unsubstituted tropiporphyrin with palladium(II) acetate gave two palladium(II) benziporphyrins, one of which possessed a formyl substituent. Although these organometallic derivatives were obtained in relatively low yields, the observation of unexpected ring contraction products demonstrates that the reactivity of the tropiporphyrin system deserves to be further investigated.

Abstract
An easy and efficient synthetic methodology for two hitherto unknown tropylium-cation-fused Hückel aromatic [26] dicarbaporphyrinoids has been developed by acid-catalyzed Lindsey type condensation of bithiophene/biselenophene diol with azulene using BF3 · Et2O followed by oxidation with chloranil and/or DDQ. Both the macrocycles have been achieved in moderately good yields. Their structures, aromaticity and optical properties have been elucidated by NMR, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic analyses and in-depth theoretical calculations. Both the macrocycles exhibited strongly diatropic characteristics with the UV-vis spectra closely resembling the spectra for true porphyrins. Detailed structural analyses using 1H–1H COSY, ROESY and DFT level theoretical investigations indicated fully conjugated [26][Formula: see text] main conjugation pathway being benefitted by the tropylium character of the seven membered rings.

Abstract
Near infrared (NIR) luminescent metal complexes are promising probes in bioimaging and biosensing, however they generally suffer from oxygen interference arising from heavy metal effects. We designed new tetradentate macrocyclic benzitripyrrin (C^N^N^N) ligands by combination of M-C bond formation and reducing the π-conjugation to achieve NIR fluorescent Pd complexes (700-1000 nm) with quantum yields up to 14%. To understand the origin of NIR fluorescence, detailed analyses by density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory (DFT/TDDFT) calculations together with femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies suggest that M-C bond formation indeed leads to destabilization of the d-d excited state and less effective quenching of emission; and importantly, small spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and the large singlet-triplet energy gap are the primary causes of the non-population of triplet states. Comparison of PdII and PtII analogues shows that the non-radiative channel of the out-plane vibration of the tripyrrin plane effectively quenches the fluorescence of the PtII complex but not the PdII congener. We also demonstrate the proof-of-concept applications of PdII complexes (Pd-1 and Pd-3) encapsulated in silica nanoparticles, in both in vitro and in vivo bioimaging experiments without oxygen interference. Moreover, pH-induced reversible switching of NIR fluorescence was achieved even intracellularly using the Pd complex (Pd-2), which shows the potential to further develop perspective stimuli-responsive NIR materials.

Abstract
Bis(pyrrolylmethyl)azulene dialdehydes underwent intramolecular McMurry coupling, and following oxidation with DDQ and addition of trifluoroacetic acid, gave aromatic azulitriphyrin cations. The proton NMR spectra for these contracted carbaporphyrinoids showed the internal CH upfield at ca. 2 ppm, while the bridging methine units appeared downfield between 8 and 10 ppm, demonstrating that the macrocycles possess significant 14π electron diamagnetic ring currents. Although protonated azulitriphyrins(1.2.1) proved to be very stable, the free base forms were unstable and could not be isolated. Treatment of an azulitriphyrin with KOt-Bu-t-BuOOH gave rise to oxidative ring contractions that afforded the first examples of benzocarbatriphyrins. These contracted porphyrinoids also exhibit aromatic ring currents, and the internal CH resonances shifted upfield to 0.5-0.7 ppm. Protonation afforded cations with slightly enhanced diatropic properties. Nucleus independent chemical shift and anisotropy of induced current density calculations confirmed that benzocarbatriphyrins are 14π electron delocalized aromatic systems that bypass the fused arene units.

Abstract
Azulene, a nonalternant bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, has unique chemical and physical properties and is considered to be a promising building block for constructing novel polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heteroaromatics. We present here the first two azulene-based BN-heteroaromatics Az-BN-1 and Az-BN-2. The chemical structures and optical and electrochemical properties of both compounds have been investigated, as well as their sensing behavior in response to fluoride ion. Az-BN-1 and Az-BN-2 show different photophysical properties from other reported BN-embedded PAHs, such as lower band gaps and unusual fluorescence. In addition, Az-BN-1 and Az-BN-2 exhibit unexpected deboronization upon addition of trifluoroacetic acid, which distinguishes them from other reported BN-heteroaromatics and can be ascribed to the unique property of the azulene unit.

Abstract
In contrast to the nonaromatic meta-benziporphyrins, the para-benziporphyrins possess aromatic character depending on the type of five-membered ring present in the macrocyclic core. The effects of changing the para-benziporphyrinic core from C2N3 to C2NSN, C2NSeN, and C2NTeN by replacing the pyrrole with other five-membered heterocycles such as thiophene, selenophene, and tellurophene on aromatic properties of p-benziporphyrins are described here using spectral, electrochemical, X-ray, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The missing core-modified p-benziporphyrins with C2NSeN and C2NTeN cores were synthesized by condensing 1 equiv of benzitripyrrane and 1,3-benzene-bis((4-phenyl)methanol with an appropriate diol such as 2,5-bis[(p-tolyl)hyroxymethyl]selenophene and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tellurophene under mild acid-catalyzed conditions at room temperature and characterized in detail by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), one- & two-dimensional NMR, and X-ray crystallography of the one of the macrocycles, Selena p-benziporphyrin. The X-ray structure of Selena p-benziporphyrin revealed that the macrocycle was almost planar apart from the p-phenylene ring, which was deviated by 49.71° from the mean plane of the macrocycle defined by four meso carbons, unlike Selena m-benziporphyrin, which is relatively more distorted. NMR studies revealed that, as the core changes from C2N3 to C2NSN, C2NSeN, and C2NTeN, the diatropic ring current decreases, indicating that the aromatic character also decreases in the same order. X-ray structure and DFT studies also revealed that the distortion in the macrocycle increases as the pyrrole ring of p-benziporphyrin was replaced with other heterocycles such as furan, thiophene, selenophene, and tellurophene and that the tellura p-benziporphyrin was the most distorted macrocycle among core-modified p-benziporphyrins. Absorption and electrochemical properties were in agreement with these observations. Our repeated attempts on metalation of these p-benziporphyrins resulted in the successful synthesis of a Pd(II) complex of tellura p-benziporphyrin. The Pd(II) complex was characterized by HR-MS and NMR techniques, and the structure was optimized by DFT. The studies indicated that the Pd(II) ion was bonded to one of the pyrrolic nitrogens, tellurophene, tellurium, and two chloride ions in distorted square-planar geometry.

Abstract
Acid-catalyzed condensation of azulidipyrrane aldehydes with a dihydrodipyrrin carbaldehyde afforded the first examples of azulichlorins. These macrocyclic products were isolated in a monoprotonated form, and the free bases proved to be somewhat unstable. The monocations were strongly diatropic, and proton NMR spectroscopy showed the internal C-H at ca. -2 ppm. Addition of TFA gave the related dications, but these exhibited significantly reduced aromatic ring currents. Reaction of an azulichlorin with tert-butyl hydroperoxide and KOH in dichloromethane/methanol gave a benzocarbachlorin and two related aldehydes. The UV-vis spectrum for the benzocarbachlorin showed a split Soret band at 414 and 430 nm, together with a strong chlorin-like absorption at 684 nm. The proton NMR spectrum indicated that the carbachlorin is strongly aromatic and the internal C-H was observed at -4.64 ppm. Addition of TFA afforded a C-protonated dication with a significantly increased diatropic ring current. The proton NMR spectrum, NICS calculations, and AICD plots indicated that the system favors a 22π electron delocalization pathway that runs through the fused benzo unit. Addition of TFA to the benzocarbachlorin aldehydes primarily led to the formation of monocations, and the generation of C-protonated dications was no longer favored due to the presence of electron-withdrawing formyl moieties.
