Calcium Impregnated Silica Gel in the Domino Reaction Involving Irreversible Aldol Addition, Dehydration, and Michael Addition. J Org Chem 2025; 90:5343-5348. Abstract
An innovative method was developed for the performance of aldol additions in an irreversible fashion by the use of calcium metal impregnated silica gel (Ca@SiO2) as a remarkable reducing reagent. In this approach, Ca@SiO2 drove the reaction forward, prevented reversibility, and ensured the formation of the desired products. Thus, in the presence of Ca@SiO2 (3.0 equiv), aldehydes (1.0 equiv) condensed with ketones (1.0 equiv) in 2-MeTHF to yield α,β-unsaturated enones in 71-90% yields at 25 °C. Additionally, a domino reaction involving successive aldol addition, dehydration, and Michael addition was developed for the preparation of 1,5-diketones. Accordingly, when aldehydes (1.0 equiv) were allowed to react with ketones (2.2 equiv) and Ca@SiO2(4.0 equiv), 1,5-diketones were produced in 67-88% yields. These reactions involved radical processes, where Ca@SiO2 abstracted two α hydrogen atoms from ketones and the oxygen atom from aldehydes to form CaH2@SiO2 and CaO@SiO2, respectively. These species were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The resultant impregnated silica gel species were solid and insoluble in the reaction mixtures, which made the addition reactions irreversible. This method represents a significant advancement in aldol condensation reactions and offers the advantages of both atom economy and atom efficiency.

Abstract
Although the asymmetric α-alkylation of carbonyl compounds with activated olefins has already been established, extending this methodology to less activated or nonactivated olefins remains a significant challenge due to the polarity mismatch in these ionic processes. An alternative approach involves the activation of the parent carbonyl compounds into electrophilic α-carbonyl radicals, which could potentially overcome this limitation. However, the lack of efficient catalytic systems has impeded the wide adoption of this strategy, particularly in realm of the catalytic asymmetric reactions. Here, we present a cooperative triple catalytic system that integrates photoredox, chiral Lewis acid, and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysts to achieve a direct asymmetric α-alkylation of β-ketocarbonyl compounds using simple olefins as alkylating agents. By combining a multifunctional chiral nickel Lewis acid with an iridium photoredox catalyst and a thiophenol catalyst under visible light, we have developed a highly efficient process that is temporally synchronized to facilitate a novel mechanism of electron and hydrogen transfer. This triple catalytic approach enables the intermolecular coupling of β-ketocarbonyl compounds with both less and non-activated olefins. This redox-neutral protocol provides an atom- and step-economic route to enantioselectively synthesize high-value molecules featuring an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter from feedstock chemicals, while only consuming photons.

Abstract
Thioethers are critical in the fields of pharmaceuticals and organic synthesis, but most of the methods for synthesis alkyl thioethers employ foul-smelling thiols as starting materials or generate them as by-products. Additionally, most thiols are air-sensitive and are easily oxidized to produce disulfides under atmospheric conditions; thus, a novel method for synthesizing thioethers is necessary. This paper reports a simple, effective, green method for synthesizing dialkyl or alkyl aryl thioether derivatives using odorless, stable, low-cost ROCS2K as a thiol surrogate. This transformation offers a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance with excellent selectivity. The reaction likely proceeds via xanthate intermediates, which can be readily generated via the nucleophilic substitution of alkyl halides or aryl halides with ROCS2K under transition-metal-free and base-free conditions.

Abstract
In light of the important biological activities and widespread applications of organic disulfides, dithiocarbamates, xanthates, thiocarbamates and thiocarbonates, the continual persuit of efficient methods for their synthesis remains crucial. Traditionally, the preparation of such compounds heavily relied on intricate multi-step syntheses and the use of highly prefunctionalized starting materials. Over the past two decades, the direct sulfuration of C-H bonds has evolved into a straightforward, atom- and step-economical method for the preparation of organosulfur compounds. This review aims to provide an up-to-date discussion on direct C-H disulfuration, dithiocarbamation, xanthylation, thiocarbamation and thiocarbonation, with a special focus on describing scopes and mechanistic aspects. Moreover, the synthetic limitations and applications of some of these methodologies, along with the key unsolved challenges to be addressed in the future are also discussed. The majority of examples covered in this review are accomplished via metal-free, photochemical or electrochemical approaches, which are in alignment with the overraching objectives of green and sustainable chemistry. This comprehensive review aims to consolidate recent advancements, providing valuable insights into the dynamic landscape of efficient and sustainable synthetic strategies for these crucial classes of organosulfur compounds.

Abstract
Carbon-introducing difunctionalization of C-C double bonds enabled by transition-metal catalysis is one of most straightforward and efficient strategies to construct C-C and C-X bonds concurrently from readily available feedstocks towards structurally diverse molecules in one step; however, analogous difunctionalization for introducing germanium group and other functionalities remains elusive. Herein, we describe a nickel-catalyzed germylative alkylation of activated olefins with easily accessible primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl bromides and chlorogermanes as the electrophiles to form C-Ge and C-Calkyl bonds simultaneously. This method provides a modular and facile approach for the synthesis of a broad range of alkylgermanes with good functional group compatibility, and can be further applied to the late-stage modification of natural products and pharmaceuticals, as well as ligation of drug fragments. More importantly, this platform enables the expedient synthesis of germanium substituted ospemifene-Ge-OH, which shows improved properties compared to ospemifene in the treatment of breast cancer cells, demonstrating high potential of our protocol in drug development.

Abstract
A modular approach to highly functional acyl (MIDA)boronates is described. It involves the generation of the hitherto unknown radical derived from acetyl (MIDA)boronate and its capture by various alkenes, including electronically unbiased, unactivated alkenes. In contrast to the anion of acetyl (MIDA)boronate, which has not so far been employed in synthesis, the corresponding radical is well behaved and readily produced from the novel α-xanthyl acetyl (MIDA)boronate. This shelf-stable, easily prepared solid is a convenient acyl (MIDA)boronate transfer agent that provides a direct entry to numerous otherwise inaccessible structures, including latent 1,4-dicarbonyl derivatives that can be transformed into B(MIDA) substituted pyrroles and furans. A competition experiment indicated the acyl (MIDA)boronate substituted radical to be more stable than the all-carbon acetonyl radical but somewhat less reactive in additions to alkenes.

Abstract
A novel and practical approach to access saturated ketones from unsaturated ketone derivatives via a CS2/t-BuOK system in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is reported. The in situ generation of xanthate salt through the reaction of carbon disulfide and potassium tert-butoxide is essential to this transformation. Deuterium-labeling experiments demonstrated that DMSO can act as a hydrogen donor.

Abstract
A versatile strategy to access vicinally functionalized cyclopentanones and cyclohexanones is described. It takes advantage of new reagents, α-xanthyl enones, which can be prepared from the reaction of xanthate salts with the corresponding epoxyketones under mild conditions. β-Functionalization of these compounds can be performed by conjugate additions without affecting the xanthate moiety. This significantly expands the pool of xanthate substrates, allowing the synthesis of open chain and fused bicyclic building blocks useful in the synthesis of natural products.

Abstract
Radical addition reactions of olefins have emerged as an attractive tool for the rapid assembly of complex structures, and have plentiful applications in organic synthesis, however, such reactions are often limited to polymerization or 1,2-difunctionalization. Herein, we disclose an unprecedented radical relay 1,4-oxyimination of two electronically differentiated olefins with a class of bifunctional oxime carbonate reagents via an energy transfer strategy. The protocol is highly chemo- and regioselective, and three different chemical bonds (C-O, C-C, and C-N bonds) were formed in a single operation in an orchestrated manner. Notably, this reaction provides rapid access to a large variety of structurally diverse 1,4-oxyimination products, and the obtained products could be easily converted into valuable biologically relevant δ-hydroxyl-α-amino acids. With a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, the mechanism for this 1,4-oxyimination reaction has been investigated. Theoretical calculations reveal that a radical chain mechanism might operate in the reaction.

Abstract
Detailed herein are our synthesis studies of longiborneol and related natural products. Our overarching goals of utilizing a "camphor first" strategy enabled by skeletal remodeling of carvone, and late-stage diversification using C-H functionalizations, led to divergent syntheses of the target natural products. Our initial approach proposed a lithiate addition to unite two fragments followed by a Conia-ene or Pd-mediated cycloalkylation reaction sequence to install the seven-membered ring emblematic of the longibornane core. This approach was unsuccessful and evolved into a revised plan that employed a Wittig coupling and a radical cyclization to establish the core. A reductive radical cyclization, which was explored first, led to a synthesis of copaborneol, a structural isomer of longiborneol. Alternatively, a metal-hydride hydrogen atom transfer-initiated cyclization was effective for a synthesis of longiborneol. Late-stage C-H functionalization of the longibornane core led to a number of hydroxylated longiborneol congeners. The need for significant optimization of the strategies that were employed as well as the methods for C-H functionalization to implement these strategies highlights the ongoing challenges in applying these powerful reactions. Nevertheless, the reported approach enables functionalization of every natural product-relevant C-H bond in the longibornane skeleton.

Abstract
Convergent routes to various six-membered carbocyclic architectures exploiting the unique radical chemistry of xanthates are described in this brief review. Three approaches are discussed. The first is the modification of existing cyclohexane building blocks, namely, cyclohexanones, cyclohexenones and cyclohexenes. The second deals with the construction of six-membered carbocycles by associating the chemistry of xanthates with classical ionic reactions, especially the Robinson annulation, the Michael addition and the Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons condensation. Finally, the third route is the formation of six-membered rings by direct six- exo and, but more rarely, six- endo cyclisation modes. Many of the complex structures presented herein would be tedious to obtain by more traditional methods.

Abstract
A novel radical-mediated trifunctionalization of hexenenitriles via the strategy of remote functional group migration is disclosed. A portfolio of functionalized hexenenitriles are employed as substrates. After difunctionalization of the unactivated alkenyl part via remote cyano migration, the in situ formed radical intermediate is captured by an azido radical, thus enabling the trifunctionalization. The reaction features mild conditions and broad functional group compatibility, leading to valuable products bearing multiple useful groups. This protocol further extends the scope of remote functional group migration.

Abstract
Herein we have developed a reversible hydrogen-deuterium exchange reaction of nonactivated olefins. By using EtOCS2K as a mediator, the H/D exchange reaction was realized through repeated addition and elimination reactions, demonstrating reversible H/D exchange between ordinary olefins and deuterated olefins. Using the lowest cost D2O without precious metal catalysts and ligands, a broad spectrum of compatibility of functional groups was achieved.

Abstract
A general method for the hydroalkylation of electron-rich terminal and non-terminal alkenes such as enol esters, alkenyl sulfides, enol ethers, silyl enol ethers, enamides and enecarbamates has been developed. The reactions are carried out at room temperature under air initiation in the presence of triethylborane acting as a chain transfer reagent and 4-tert-butylcatechol (TBC) as a source of hydrogen atom. The efficacy of the reaction is best explained by very favorable polar effects supporting the chain process and minimizing undesired polar reactions. The stereoselective hydroalkylation of chiral N-(alk-1-en-1-yl)oxazolidin-2-ones takes place with good to excellent diastereocontrol. Giese reaction not anymore limited to electron poor alkenes! A general method for the radical mediated hydroalkylation of electron rich alkenes including enol ethers, silylenolethers, enamides, and enecarbamates has been developed.![]()

Abstract
An environmentally sustainable strategy for the chemoselective heterocyclization of bromoenynes through a transition-metal-free sulfuration/cyclization process is reported. Using inexpensive and safe EtOCS2K as a thiol surrogate and tetrabutylphosphonium bromide and H2O as a mixed solvent, the reaction provided a range of substituted thiophenes in moderate to good yields. In addition, 2,3,4,5-tetrasubstituted thiophenes were able to be prepared under mild reaction conditions by electrophilic heterocyclization with NH4I and EtOCS2K in good yields.

Abstract
In this paper we describe the reaction between various potassium xanthates (potassium O-methyl xanthate, potassium O-isobutyl xanthate, xanthate functionalized MPEGs, etc.) and common five-membered cyclic carbonates such as ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC). The reaction was carried out under catalyst-free conditions. Intensive evolution of both CO2 and COS and the simultaneous formation of a rich precipitate were found to be the characteristic features of the studied reaction. It was determined that the precipitate consists of various alkoxides, including potassium ethane-1,2-bis(olate) (EC-based reaction) and potassium propane-1,2-bis(olate) (PC-based reaction) and alkoxide-terminated sulfides. It was also demonstrated that the resulting liquid phase (the mother liquor) contains polyalkylene sulfides whose number average molecular weight (M n) was found to be in the range 400-550 Da and 300-400 Da for EC- and PC-based oligomers, respectively. Further studies revealed that the distribution between major products varies considerably with variation in the parameters of the reaction. Thus, by applying reduced pressure conditions and a temperature equal to 90 °C, up to 95% selectivity towards the formation of alkoxide-terminated sulfide (e.g., potassium 1,1'-thiobis(propan-2-olate)) was achieved. On the other hand, selectivity towards alkoxide formation equal to 98% was achieved for the reactions carried out in the presence of water. As a general trend, it was also established that a shift in balance between products towards the formation of sulfur-containing products (sulfides) occurs with an appropriate increase in the temperature of the reaction. Based on the obtained experimental data supplemented with quantum-chemical calculations (NBO analysis and scanning of the potential energy surface), the mechanisms of the cascade reactions underlying the formation of key intermediates and final products were also proposed.

Abstract
Alkenes are ubiquitous in natural products and are extensively used as synthetic feedstocks in multiple fields including organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and materials science. Radical-mediated difunctionalization of alkenes provides a powerful tactic for alkene utilization. Despite the considerable progress made in the past several decades, state-of-the-art methods are highly dependent upon activated alkenes in which a proximal group with a π-electron system (e.g., aryl, carbonyl, and heteroatom) is requisite to stabilize the nascent alkyl radical intermediate via p-π conjugation or p orbitals of the heteroatom. In contrast, the transformation of unactivated alkenes, such as aliphatic alkenes, remains challenging. To overcome this obstacle, we have recently disclosed the strategy of intramolecular distal functional group migration (FGM), which has been efficiently applied in radical difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes. A portfolio of functional groups, such as cyano, heteroaryl, oximino, formyl, and alkynyl groups, showcase the excellent migratory aptitude. Mechanistically, after the addition of an extrinsic radical to the alkene, the newly formed active alkyl radical is rapidly captured by the intramolecular migratory group to generate a cyclic intermediate. Subsequent cleavage of the cyclic C-C bond of the intermediate leads to the functionalized product through the FGM process. Based on the strategy of FGM, a set of elusive difunctionalizations of unactivated alkenes have been accomplished (Part A).Alongside this research, an upgraded highly efficient synthetic strategy, "dock-migration," is created for intermolecular difunctionalization of alkenes. A diversity of sulfone-based dual-function reagents are developed. The intermolecular transformation is initiated by docking the dual-function reagent to the alkene, followed by intramolecular migration of the functional group. Compared to the original FGM protocol, the scope of alkenes is significantly extended from the strategically placed tertiary alcohol-substituted alkenes to general alkenes. Both activated and unactivated alkenes are well tolerated. By this approach, radical-mediated fluoroalkylheteroarylation, fluoroalkylalkynylation, and alkylation of alkenes have been achieved (Part B).Direct elaboration of C-H bonds into the targeted functional groups represents one of the most ideal and straightforward methods for molecular functionalization. The FGM strategy proves to be an ingenious tool for radical-mediated functionalization of remote unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds. Based on the FGM process, we have accomplished: (a) remote C(sp3)-H heteroarylation and cyanation of unprotected alcohols via the cascade of alkoxy radical-enabled hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and intramolecular functional group (e.g., heteroaryl, cyano) migration, and (b) distal C(sp3)-H vinylation of propargylic alcohols through consecutive alkenyl radical-promoted HAT process and subsequent alkenyl migration (Part C).

Abstract
Reported herein is a visible‐light‐mediated radical approach to the α‐alkylation of ketones. This method exploits the ability of a nucleophilic organocatalyst to generate radicals upon SN2‐based activation of alkyl halides and blue light irradiation. The resulting open‐shell intermediates are then intercepted by weakly nucleophilic silyl enol ethers, which would be unable to directly attack the alkyl halides through a traditional two‐electron path. The mild reaction conditions allowed functionalization of the α position of ketones with functional groups that are not compatible with classical anionic strategies. In addition, the redox‐neutral nature of this process makes it compatible with a cinchona‐based primary amine catalyst, which was used to develop a rare example of enantioselective organocatalytic radical α‐alkylation of ketones.

Abstract
This protocol provides a novel, environmentally friendly and simple method for the synthesis of (Z)-tetrahydrothiophene derivatives using the nucleophilic thiyl radical intramolecular cycloaddition cascade process to construct C-S bonds under transition-metal-free conditions. This transformation process offers a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and excellent stereoselectivity (Z/E ratios up to 99/1). Moreover, the process uses odourless, stable and cheap EtOCS2K as the sulfur source.

Abstract
Semi-hydrogenation of alkynes is one of the most widely used methods for obtaining alkenes in laboratory preparation and in industry. Transition metal catalysts have been extensively studied for this transformation, but the tolerance of functional groups, such as pyridine, -OH, -NH2, -Bpin, and halides, and the toxicity of the trace amount of transition metal catalysts are still highly challenging. In this study, we report a general and robust strategy to achieve the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes using inexpensive and commercially available xanthate as the mediator. Mechanism studies support a non-radical process and H2O acts as the hydrogen donor.

Abstract
The degenerative transfer of xanthates to olefins is enabled by the iridium-based photocatalyst [Ir{dF(CF3)ppy}2(dtbbpy)](PF6) under blue LED light irradiation. Detailed mechanistic investigations through kinetics and photophysical studies revealed that the process operates under a radical chain mechanism, which is initiated through triplet-sensitization of xanthates by the long-lived triplet state of the iridium-based photocatalyst.
