Abstract
Specific detection of glycoproteins such as transferrin (TRF) related to neurological diseases, hepatoma and other diseases always plays an important role in the field of disease diagnosis. We designed an antibody-free immunoassay sensing method based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) formed by the polymerization of multiple functional monomers for the sensitive and selective detection of TRF in human serum. In the sandwich surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensor, the TRF-oriented magnetic MIP nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2-MIPs) served as capture units to specifically recognize TRF and 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid-functionalized gold nanorods (MPBA-Au NRs) served as SERS probes to label the targets. In order to achieve stronger interaction between the recognition cavities of the prepared MIPs and the different amino acid fragments that make up TRF, Fe3O4@SiO2-MIPs were obtained through polycondensation reactions between more silylating reagents, enhancing the specific recognition of the entire TRF protein and achieving high IF. This sensing method exhibited a good linear response to TRF within the TRF concentration range of 0.01 ng mL-1 to 1 mg mL-1 (R2 = 0.9974), and the LOD was 0.00407 ng mL-1 (S/N = 3). The good stability, reproducibility and specificity of the resulting MIP based SERS sensor were demonstrated. The determination of TRF in human serum confirmed the feasibility of the method in practical applications.

Abstract
In this study, we prepared molecularly imprinted polymer nanogels with good affinity for the Fc domain of immunoglobulin G (IgG) using 4-(2-methacrylamidoethylaminomethyl) phenylboronic acid as a modifiable functional monomer for post-imprinting in-cavity modification of a fluorescent dye (F-Fc-MIP-NGs). A novel nanogel-based biotic/abiotic hybrid sandwich detection system for porcine serum albumin (PSA) was developed using F-Fc-MIP-NGs as an alternative to a secondary antibody for fluorescence detection and another molecularly imprinted polymer nanogel capable of recognizing PSA (PSA-MIP-NGs) as a capturing artificial antibody, along with a natural antibody toward PSA (Anti-PSA) that was used as a primary antibody. After incubation of PSA and Anti-PSA with F-Fc-MIP-NGs, the PSA/Anti-PSA/F-Fc-MIP-NGs complex was captured by immobilized PSA-MIP-NGs for fluorescence measurements. The analysis time was less than 30 min for detecting pork adulteration of 0.01 wt% in halal beef and lamb meats. The detection limit was comparable to that of frequently used immunoassays. Therefore, we believe that this method is a promising, sensitive, and rapid detection method for impurities in real samples and could be a simple, inexpensive, and rapid alternative to conventional methods that have cumbersome procedures of 4 hours or more.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has attracted increasing interest in various research fields for fabricating functional nanomaterials. In this study, we investigated the effect of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) addition on the formation and thermoresponsive properties of poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)-based nanogels in aqueous dispersion polymerizations. During dispersion polymerization, PVA appears to play three roles: (i) it bridges the generated polymer chains during polymerization, (ii) it stabilizes the formed polymer nanogels, and (iii) it regulates the thermoresponsive properties of the polymer nanogels. By regulating the bridging effect of PVA via changing the PVA concentration and chain length, the size of the obtained polymer gel particles was maintained in the nanometer range. Furthermore, we found that the clouding-point temperature increased when using low-molecular weight PVA. We believe that the knowledge gained in this study regarding the effect of PVA concentration and chain length on nanogel formation will aid in the future fabrication of functional polymer nanogels.

Abstract
Radiation therapy is a representative therapeutic approach for cancer treatment, wherein the development of efficient radiation sensitizers with low side effects is critical. In this study, a novel stealth radiation sensitizer based on Au-embedded molecularly imprinted polymer nanogels (Au MIP-NGs) was developed for low-dose X-ray radiation therapy. Surface plasmon resonance measurements reveal the good affinity and selectivity of the obtained Au MIP-NGs toward the target dysopsonic protein, human serum albumin. The protein recognition capability of the nanogels led to the formation of the albumin-rich protein corona in the plasma. The Au MIP-NGs acquire stealth capability in vivo through protein corona regulation using the intrinsic dysopsonic proteins. The injection of Au MIP-NGs improved the efficiency of the radiation therapy in mouse models of pancreatic cancer. The growth of the pancreatic tumor was inhibited even at low X-ray doses (2 Gy). The novel strategy reported in this study for the synthesis of stealth nanomaterials based on nanomaterial-protein interaction control shows significant potential for application even in other approaches for cancer treatment, diagnostics, and theranostics. This strategy paves a way for the development of a wide range of effective nanomedicines for cancer therapy.

Abstract
Nanoparticles are gaining momentum as a smart tool towards a safer, more cost-effective and sustainable food chain. This study aimed to provide an overview of the potential uses, preparation, properties, and applications of nanoparticles to process and preserve fresh meat and processed meat products. Nanoparticles can be used to reinforce the packaging material resulting in the improvement of sensory, functional, and nutritional aspects of meat and processed meat products. Further, these particles can be used in smart packaging as biosensors to extend the shelf-life of fresh and processed meat products and also to monitor the final quality of these products during the storage period. Nanoparticles are included in product formulation as carriers of health-beneficial and/or functional ingredients. They showed great efficiency in encapsulating bioactive ingredients and preserving their properties to ensure their functionality (e.g., antioxidant and antimicrobial) in meat products. As a result, nanoparticles can efficiently contribute to ensuring product safety and quality whilst reducing wastage and costs. Nevertheless, a wider implementation of nanotechnology in meat industry is highly related to its economic value, consumers' acceptance, and the regulatory framework. Being a novel technology, concerns over the toxicity of nanoparticles are still controversial and therefore efficient analytical tools are deemed crucial for the identification and quantification of nanocomponents in meat products. Thus, migration studies about nanoparticles from the packaging into meat and meat products are still a concern as it has implications for human health associated with their toxicity. Moreover, focused economic evaluations for implementing nanoparticles in meat packaging are crucial since the current literature is still scarce and targeted studies are needed before further industrial applications.

Abstract
Waxy sorghum has greater economic value than wild sorghum in relation to their use in food processing and the brewing industry. Thus, the authentication of the waxy sorghum species is an important issue. Herein, a rapid and sensitive Authentication Amplification Refractory Mutation System-PCR (aARMS-PCR) method was employed to identify sorghum species via its ability to resolve single-nucleotide in genes. As a proof of concept, we chose a species of waxy sorghum containing the wxc mutation which is abundantly used in liquor brewing. The aARMS-PCR can distinguish non-wxc sorghum from wxc sorghum to guarantee identification of specific waxy sorghum species. It allowed to detect as low as 1% non-wxc sorghum in sorghum mixtures, which ar one of the most sensitive tools for food authentication. Due to its ability for resolving genes with single-nucleotide resolution and high sensitivity, aARMS-PCR may have wider applicability in monitoring food adulteration, offering a rapid food authenticity verification in the control of adulteration.

Abstract
Molecular imprinting is a technique for creating artificial recognition sites on polymer matrices that complement the template in terms of size, shape, and spatial arrangement of functional groups. The main advantage of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIP) as the polymer for use with a molecular imprinting technique is that they have high selectivity and affinity for the target molecules used in the molding process. The components of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer are template, functional monomer, cross-linker, solvent, and initiator. Many things determine the success of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer, but the Molecularly Imprinted Polymer component and the interaction between template-monomers are the most critical factors. This review will discuss how to find the interaction between template and monomer in Molecularly Imprinted Polymer before polymerization and after polymerization and choose the suitable component for MIP development. Computer simulation, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Proton-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR) are generally used to determine the type and strength of intermolecular interaction on pre-polymerization stage. In turn, Suspended State Saturation Transfer Difference High Resolution/Magic Angle Spinning (STD HR/MAS) NMR, Raman Spectroscopy, and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Fluorescence Spectroscopy are used to detect chemical interaction after polymerization. Hydrogen bonding is the type of interaction that is becoming a focus to find on all methods as this interaction strongly contributes to the affinity of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs).

Abstract
The halal food market is globally growing along with the increased risk of adulteration. We proposed an amplification-free and mix-to-read CRISPR-Cas12-based nucleic acid analytical strategy allowing rapid identification and analysis of pork components, thus enriching the toolbox for ensuring halal food authenticity. We designed and optimized guide RNA (gRNA) targeting the pork cytochrome b (Cyt b) gene. gRNA allowed specific identification of the target Cyt b gene from pork components followed by activation of Cas12 protein to abundantly cleave single-stranded DNA probes with terminally labeled fluorophore and quencher groups, thus turning on fluorescence. The presence of the pork Cyt b gene thus can be mix-and-read- and only-one-step-detected, which may indicate the risk of halal food adulteration. The method allowed specific discrimination of pork meat from beef, mutton, and chicken and yielded a detection limit of 2.7 ng/μL of total DNA from pork meat. The reliability of the method was tested using the following processed meat products: halal foods beef luncheon meat and spiced beef and non-halal foods sausage and dried pork slices. The CRISPR-Cas12-based nucleic acid test strategy is promising for rapid food authentication.

Abstract
Rapid, sensitive, and portable analytical methods for on-site inspection of food fraud are now an urgent requirement to ensure food quality and satisfy the ethnic considerations of consumers. Hence, for the first time, a colorimetric smartphone-based immunoassay was developed for the on-site detection of pork adulteration in meat. In detail, the immunoassay was based on a competitive strategy in which immobilized standard porcine IgG competed with the target porcine IgG extracted in a single step from meat samples. The parameters involved in each step of the immunoassay conception and the digital colorimetric detection were carefully investigated and optimized. Using polystyrene microplates as ready-to-use stable and portable immunoplatforms, TMB as chromogenic substrate, smartphone as signal readout, and Image J software for image processing; the developed immunoassay was able to detect as low as 0.01% of pork in meat mixtures in a total assay time of 30 min. The selectivity of the immunoassay was evaluated for different meat species, and it was shown to selectively respond only to pork. Furthermore, excellent stability of the prepared immunological platform was demonstrated under extreme temperature conditions (50 °C), which confirms its high portability potential for in situ quantification of pork, while being relatively cost effective and non-laborious. The developed method also provides great precision (RSD < 6%) and accuracy (relative error< 6%). Given the universal use of smartphones as portable and affordable devices, such format of immunoassay could be a promising approach for rapid and sensitive real-time monitoring of food fraud.

Abstract
As a kind of artificial recognition material, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) offer a promising perspective to be developed as synthetic chemical binders capable of selectively recognize biomacromolecules. However, owing to the large size and conformational flexibility of proteins and peptides, imprinting of these biomacromolecules remains a challenge. Novel imprinting strategies still need exploration for the improvement of recognition performance of MIPs. Herein, we developed a hydrazone bond-oriented surface imprinting strategy for an endogenous peptide hormone, human atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Surface-oriented imprinting of peptide via reversible covalent bond anchoring approach increased the orientation homogeneity of imprinted cavities as well as the utility of templates. The prepared nanoparticles exhibited high selectivity and fast recognition kinetics for ANP epitope. The dissociation constant between ANP epitope and MIP was measured as 5.3 μM. The applicability of the material in real samples was verified by the selective magnetic extraction of ANP from human plasma samples. This hydrazone bond-oriented surface imprinting strategy provides an alternative approach for the separation of peptides or proteins in complex bio-samples.

Abstract
Food safety become a hot issue currently with globalization of food trade and food supply chains. Chemical pollution, microbial contamination and adulteration in food have attracted more attention worldwide. Contamination with antibiotics, estrogens and heavy metals in water environment and soil environment have also turn into an enormous threat to food safety. Traditional small-scale, long-term detection technologies have been unable to meet the current needs. In the monitoring process, rapid, convenient, accurate analysis and detection technologies have become the future development trend. We critically synthesizing the current knowledge of various rapid detection technology, and briefly touched upon the problem which still exist in research process. The review showed that the application of novel materials promotes the development of rapid detection technology, high-throughput and portability would be popular study directions in the future. Of course, the ultimate aim of the research is how to industrialization these technologies and apply to the market.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have emerged over the past few decades as interesting synthetic alternatives due to their long-term chemical and physical stability and low-cost synthesis procedure. They have been integrated into many sensing platforms and assay formats for the detection of various targets, ranging from small molecules to macromolecular entities such as pathogens and whole cells. Despite the advantages MIPs have over natural receptors in terms of commercialization, the striking success stories of biosensor applications such as the glucose meter or the self-test for pregnancy have not been matched by MIP-based sensor or detection kits yet. In this review, we zoom in on the commercial potential of MIP technology and aim to summarize the latest developments in their commercialization and integration into sensors and assays with high commercial potential. We will also analyze which bottlenecks are inflicting with commercialization and how recent advances in commercial MIP synthesis could overcome these obstacles in order for MIPs to truly achieve their commercial potential in the near future.

Abstract
Quality checks, assessments, and the assurance of food products, raw materials, and food ingredients is critically important to ensure the safeguard of foods of high quality for safety and public health. Nevertheless, quality checks, assessments, and the assurance of food products along distribution and supply chains is impacted by various challenges. For instance, the development of portable, sensitive, low-cost, and robust instrumentation that is capable of real-time, accurate, and sensitive analysis, quality checks, assessments, and the assurance of food products in the field and/or in the production line in a food manufacturing industry is a major technological and analytical challenge. Other significant challenges include analytical method development, method validation strategies, and the non-availability of reference materials and/or standards for emerging food contaminants. The simplicity, portability, non-invasive, non-destructive properties, and low-cost of NIR spectrometers, make them appealing and desirable instruments of choice for rapid quality checks, assessments and assurances of food products, raw materials, and ingredients. This review article surveys literature and examines current challenges and breakthroughs in quality checks and the assessment of a variety of food products, raw materials, and ingredients. Specifically, recent technological innovations and notable advances in quartz crystal microbalances (QCM), electroanalytical techniques, and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic instrument development in the quality assessment of selected food products, and the analysis of food raw materials and ingredients for foodborne pathogen detection between January 2019 and July 2020 are highlighted. In addition, chemometric approaches and multivariate analyses of spectral data for NIR instrumental calibration and sample analyses for quality assessments and assurances of selected food products and electrochemical methods for foodborne pathogen detection are discussed. Moreover, this review provides insight into the future trajectory of innovative technological developments in QCM, electroanalytical techniques, NIR spectroscopy, and multivariate analyses relating to general applications for the quality assessment of food products.
