Black Carbon Contributes Substantially to Allochthonous Carbon Storage in Deltaic Vegetated Coastal Habitats

Molecular composition and characteristics of Sediment-adsorbed Dissolved Organic Matter (SDOM) along the coast of China

Sediment-adsorbed Dissolved Organic Matter (SDOM) in coast plays a crucial role in the terrestrial and marine carbon cycle processes of the global environment. However, understanding the transport dynamics of SDOM along the coast of China, particularly its interactions with sediments, remains elusive. In this study, we analyzed the δ13C and δ15N stable isotopic compositions, as well as the molecular characteristics of SDOM collected from coastal areas spanning the Bohai Sea (BS), Yellow Sea (YS), East China Sea (ECS), and South China Sea (SCS), by using isotope ratio mass spectrometry and Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). We identified the predominant sources of carbon and nitrogen in coastal sediments, revealing terrigenous origins for most C and N, while anthropogenic sources dominated in the SCS. Spatial variations in SDOM chemodiversity were observed, with diverse molecular components influenced by distinct environmental factors and sediment sources. Notably, lignins and saturated compounds (such as proteins/amino sugars) were the predominant molecular compounds detected in coastal SDOM. Through Mantel tests and Spearman's correlation analysis, we elucidated the significant influence of spatial environmental factors (temperature, DO, salinity, and depth) and sediment sources on SDOM molecular chemodiversity. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the carbon cycle dynamics along the Chinese coast.

Black Carbon Impacts on Paraburkholderia xenovorans Strain LB400 Cell Enrichment and Activity: Implications toward Lower-Chlorinated Polychlorinated Biphenyls Biodegradation Potential

Volatilization of lower-chlorinated polychlorinated biphenyls (LC-PCBs) from sediment poses health threats to nearby communities and ecosystems. Biodegradation combined with black carbon (BC) materials is an emerging bioaugmentation approach to remove PCBs from sediment, but development of aerobic biofilms on BC for long-term, sustained LC-PCBs remediation is poorly understood. This work aimed to characterize the cell enrichment and activity of biphenyl- and benzoate-grown Paraburkholderia xenovorans strain LB400 on various BCs. Biphenyl dioxygenase gene (bphA) abundance on four BC types demonstrated corn kernel biochar hosted at least 4 orders of magnitude more attached cells per gram than other feedstocks, and microscopic imaging revealed the attached live cell fraction was >1.5× more on corn kernel biochar than GAC. BC characteristics (i.e., sorption potential, pore size, pH) appear to contribute to cell attachment differences. Reverse transcription qPCR indicated that BC feedstocks significantly influenced bphA expression in attached cells. The bphA transcript-per-gene ratio of attached cells was >10-fold more than suspended cells, confirmed by transcriptomics. RNA-seq also demonstrated significant upregulation of biphenyl and benzoate degradation pathways on attached cells, as well as revealing biofilm formation potential/cell-cell communication pathways. These novel findings demonstrate aerobic PCB-degrading cell abundance and activity could be tuned by adjusting BC feedstocks/attributes to improve LC-PCBs biodegradation potential.

Climate and mineral accretion as drivers of mineral-associated and particulate organic matter accumulation in tidal wetland soils

Tidal wetlands sequester vast amounts of organic carbon (OC) and enhance soil accretion. The conservation and restoration of these ecosystems is becoming increasingly geared toward "blue" carbon sequestration while obtaining additional benefits, such as buffering sea-level rise and enhancing biodiversity. However, the assessments of blue carbon sequestration focus primarily on bulk SOC inventories and often neglect OC fractions and their drivers; this limits our understanding of the mechanisms controlling OC storage and opportunities to enhance blue carbon sinks. Here, we determined mineral-associated and particulate organic matter (MAOM and POM, respectively) in 99 surface soils and 40 soil cores collected from Chinese mangrove and saltmarsh habitats across a broad range of climates and accretion rates and showed how previously unrecognized mechanisms of climate and mineral accretion regulated MAOM and POM accumulation in tidal wetlands. MAOM concentrations (8.0 ± 5.7 g C kg-1 ) (±standard deviation) were significantly higher than POM concentrations (4.2 ± 5.7 g C kg-1 ) across the different soil depths and habitats. MAOM contributed over 51.6 ± 24.9% and 78.9 ± 19.0% to OC in mangrove and saltmarsh soils, respectively; both exhibited lower autochthonous contributions but higher contributions from terrestrial or marine sources than POM, which was derived primarily from autochthonous sources. Increased input of plant-derived organic matter along the increased temperature and precipitation gradients significantly enriched the POM concentrations. In contrast, the MAOM concentrations depended on climate, which controlled the mineral reactivity and mineral-OC interactions, and on regional sedimentary processes that could redistribute the reactive minerals. Mineral accretion diluted the POM concentrations and potentially enhanced the MAOM concentrations depending on mineral composition and whether the mineral accretion benefited plant productivity. Therefore, management strategies should comprehensively consider regional climate while regulating sediment supply and mineral abundance with engineering solutions to tap the OC sink potential of tidal wetlands.

Dynamics of trace element enrichment in blue carbon ecosystems in relation to anthropogenic activities

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), located at the land-sea interface, provide critical ecological services including the buffering of anthropogenic pollutants. Understanding the interactions between trace element (TE) loads in BCEs and socioeconomic development is imperative to informing management plans to address pollution issues. However, the identification of anthropogenic TE pollution in BCEs remains uncertain due to the complex geochemical and depositional processes and asynchronous socioeconomic development along continental coastlines. Here, priority-controlled TE (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations in the mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass soils and plant tissues along the coastline of China were investigated while taking bare flat and upland soils as corresponding references. We demonstrate that blue carbon (BC) soils accumulated markedly higher concentrations of anthropogenic TEs than the reference soils, mainly due to the effective trapping of fine-grained particles and higher binding capacities. We identify the time course of TE changes over the last 100 years which shows increasing anthropogenic TE accumulation resulting from military activities (1930-1950) and the growth of industrial and agricultural activities (1950-1980), then reaching a maximum after national economic reform (1980-2000). Since the 2000s, decreases in TE discharges driven by socioeconomic reform and strengthened environmental regulations have led to a widespread reversal of anthropogenic TE concentrations in BC soils. Based on the current TE flux we estimate that BCEs can filter over 27.3-100 % of the TEs emitted in industrial wastewaters from Chinese coastal provinces annually. However, the uptake of these TEs by plants can be substantially reduced through various mechanisms offered by edaphic properties such as organic carbon, clay, and sulfur contents. Therefore, enhancing TE filtering while preventing TEs from entering food webs through the conservation and restoration of BCEs will greatly aid in achieving the sustainable development goal of the coastal zone under intensified anthropogenic activities.

An overlooked soil carbon pool in vegetated coastal ecosystems: National-scale assessment of soil organic carbon stocks in coastal shelter forests of China

Protection and restoration of vegetated coastal ecosystems provide opportunities to mitigate climate change. Coastal shelter forests as one of vegetated coastal ecosystems play vital role on sandy coasts protection, but less attention is paid on their soil organic carbon (OC) sequestration potential. Here, we provide the first national-scale assessment of the soil OC stocks, fractions, sources and accumulation rates from 48 sites of shelter forests and 74 sites of sandy beaches across 22° of latitude in China. We find that, compared with sandy beaches, shelter forest plantation achieves an average soil desalination rate of 92.0 % and reduces the soil pH by 1.3 units. The improved soil quality can facilitate OC sequestration leading to an increase of soil OC stock of 11.8 (0.60-64.2) MgC ha^-1 in shelter forests. Particulate OC (POC) is a dominant OC fraction in both sandy beaches and shelter forests, but most sites are >80 % in shelter forests. The low δ¹³C values and higher C:N ratios, which are more regulated by climate and tree species, together with high POC proportions suggest a substantial contribution of plant-derived OC. Bayesian mixing model indicates that 71.8 (33.5-91.6)% of the soil OC is derived from local plant biomass. We estimate that soil OC stocks in Chinese shelter forests are 20.5 (7.44-79.7) MgC ha^-1 and 4.53 ± 0.71 TgC in the top meter, with an accumulation rate of 45.0 (6.90 to 194.1) gC m^-2 year^-1 and 99.5 ± 44.9 GgC year^-1. According to coastal shelter forest afforestation plan, additional 1.72 ± 0.27 TgC with a rate of 37.9 ± 17.1 GgC year^-1 can be sequestrated in the future. Our findings suggest that construction of coastal shelter forests can be an effective solution to sequester more soil carbon in coastal ecosystems.

Soil Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Stoichiometry and Fractions in Blue Carbon Ecosystems: Implications for Carbon Accumulation in Allochthonous-Dominated Habitats

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) including mangroves, saltmarshes, and seagrasses are highly efficient for organic carbon (OC) accumulation due to their unique ability to trap high rates of allochthonous substrates. It has been suggested that the magnitude of OC preservation is constrained by nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) limitation in response to climate and anthropogenic changes. However, little is known about the connection of soil OC with N-P and their forms in response to allochthonous inputs in BCEs. By analyzing soil OC, N, and P densities of BCEs from 797 sites globally, we find that, in China, where allochthonous OC provides 50-75% of total OC, soil C/P and N/P ratios are 4- to 8-fold lower than their global means, and 23%, 29%, and 20% of buried OC, N, and P are oxidation-resistant fractions that linked with minerals. We estimate that the OC stocks in China should double over the next 40 years under high allochthonous inputs and elevated N/P ratio scenarios during BCE restoration. Allochthonous-dominated BCEs thus have the capacity to enhance refractory and mineral bound organic matter accumulation. Protection and restoration of such BCEs will provide long-term mitigating benefits against sea level rise and greenhouse gas emissions.

Nonhomologous Black Carbon Decoupled Char and Soot Sequestration Based on Stable Carbon Isotopes in Tibetan Plateau Lake Sediment

Combustion-derived black carbon (BC) is an important component of sedimentary carbon pool. Due to different physicochemical properties, determining the source of char and soot is crucial for BC cycling, especially for nonhomologous char and soot in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). This study analyzed the sequestration and source of BC, char, and soot in the Dagze Co (inner TP) sediment core via the content and δ¹³C, revealing the biomass and fossil fuel driving on nonsynchronous char and soot and their response to local anthropogenic activities and atmospheric transmission. The results showed that BC concentration increased from 1.19 ± 0.35 mg g^-1 (pre-1956) to 2.03 ± 1.05 mg g^-1 (after 1956). The variation of char was similar to BC, while nonhomologous growth was detected in char and soot (r = 0.29 and p > 0.05). The source apportionment showed that biomass burning for 71.52 ± 10.23% of char and promoted char sequestration. The contribution of fossil fuel combustion to soot (46.67 ± 14.07%) is much higher than char (28.48 ± 10.23%). Redundancy analysis confirmed that local anthropogenic activities significantly influenced BC burial and atmospheric transport from outside TP-regulated BC burial. The contribution of biomass and fossil fuels to nonsynchronous char and soot is conducive to understanding the anthropogenic effect on BC burial in the TP.

Coal combustion facilitating faster burial of char than soot in a plateau lake of southwest China

Black carbon (BC) is a retarder in carbon cycle, and the proportion of char and soot in BC restricts the significance of BC as a sink in carbon cycle. Tracing the sources of char and soot is helpful for in-depth understanding the anthropogenic-driven burial and pattern of BC, and is crucial for regulating emissions of BC and impact of BC on carbon cycle/climate change. This study investigated source-driven BC via the concentration and δ¹³C of BC (char and soot) in a Plateau lake sediment. The burial rate of BC (mean: 6.42 ± 5.09 g m^-2 yr^-1) showed an increasing trend (3.7 times after 1977 compared with before), and the growth rate of char (4.1 times) was faster than soot (2.5 times). The source trace results, showing faster growth of coal combustion ratio in char (increased 21% after 1980 compared with before) than soot (13%), proved that coal combustion promoted faster growth of char in BC. Redundancy analysis confirmed that more low-temperature utilization of coal urged a stronger driving force for char than soot, which caused BC to have lower aromatic content and higher reactivity in organic carbon pool from the past to present, further impact the effects of BC on carbon cycle.

Spatial variation of particulate black carbon, and its sources in a large eutrophic urban lake in China

Black carbon (BC), characterized by high aromaticity and stability, has been recognized as a substantial fraction of the carbon pool in soil and sediment. The effect of BC on the particulate organic carbon (POC) pool in lake water, which is an important medium of carbon transmission and transformation, has not been thoroughly studied. The investigations of BC composition and distribution, POC, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were conducted in a eutrophic urban lake, Taihu Lake, which is the third largest freshwater lake in China. The results indicate that the BC is composed of 55 ± 12% char and 45 ± 12% soot and accounted for 12 ± 6% of POC (the maximum value is 31%). The comparatively high levels of BC and char are distributed in the northern Taihu Lake, especially in Meiliang Bay (0.72 ± 0.38 mg L^-1 and 0.45 ± 0.24 mg L^-1). The distribution of soot presents a declining trend from the lakeshore to the central lake, particularly in the northern, western, and southern lakes. Source apportionment results from positive matrix factorization of PAHs suggest that consumption of fossil fuel (79 ± 20%) is the dominant source of BC, which agrees with the low ratio of char/soot (1.41 ± 0.71) and relatively depleted δ¹³C. The covariation of BC and PAHs and terrestrial dissolved organic carbon indicate that the effect of terrestrial input significantly regulates the distribution of BC in Taihu Lake, which is reflected in the high BC value along the lakeshore.
