HONO Production from Gypsum Surfaces Following Exposure to NO2 and HNO3: Roles of Relative Humidity and Light Source

Phase State Regulates Photochemical HONO Production from NaNO3/Dicarboxylic Acid Mixtures

Field observations of daytime HONO source strengths have not been well explained by laboratory measurements and model predictions up until now. More efforts are urgently needed to fill the knowledge gaps concerning how environmental factors, especially relative humidity (RH), affect particulate nitrate photolysis. In this work, two critical attributes for atmospheric particles, i.e., phase state and bulk-phase acidity, both influenced by ambient RH, were focused to illuminate the key regulators for reactive nitrogen production from typical internally mixed systems, i.e., NaNO3 and dicarboxylic acid (DCA) mixtures. The dissolution of only few oxalic acid (OA) crystals resulted in a remarkable 50-fold increase in HONO production compared to pure nitrate photolysis at 85% RH. Furthermore, the HONO production rates (PHONO) increased by about 1 order of magnitude as RH rose from <5% to 95%, initially exhibiting an almost linear dependence on the amount of surface absorbed water and subsequently showing a substantial increase in PHONO once nitrate deliquescence occurred at approximately 75% RH. NaNO3/malonic acid (MA) and NaNO3/succinic acid (SA) mixtures exhibited similar phase state effects on the photochemical HONO production. These results offer a new perspective on how aerosol physicochemical properties influence particulate nitrate photolysis in the atmosphere.

Primary sources of HONO vary during the daytime: Insights based on a field campaign

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an established precursor of hydroxyl (OH) radical and has significant impacts on the formation of PM2.5 and O3. Despite extensive research on HONO observation in recent years, knowledge regarding its sources and sinks in urban areas remains inadequate. In this study, we monitored the atmospheric concentrations of HONO and related pollutants, including gaseous nitric acid and particulate nitrate, simultaneously at a supersite in downtown Chengdu, a megacity in southwestern China during spring, when was chosen due to its tolerance for both PM2.5 and O3 pollution. Furthermore, we employed the random forest model to fill the missing data of HONO, which exhibited good predictive performance (R2 = 0.96, RMSE = 0.36 ppbv). During this campaign, the average mixing ratio of HONO was measured to be 1.0 ± 0.7 ppbv. Notably, during periods of high O3 and PM2.5 concentrations, the mixing ratio of HONO was >50 % higher compared to the clean period. We developed a comprehensive parameterization scheme for the HONO budget, and it performed well in simulating diurnal variations of HONO. Based on the HONO budget analysis, we identified different mechanisms that dominate HONO formation at different times of the day. Vehicle emissions and NO2 heterogeneous conversions were found to be the primary sources of HONO during nighttime (21.0 %, 30.2 %, respectively, from 18:00 to 7:00 the next day). In the morning (7:00-12:00), NO2 heterogeneous conversions and the reaction of NO with OH became the main sources (35.0 %, 32.2 %, respectively). However, in the afternoon (12:00-18:00), the heterogeneous photolysis of HNO3 on PM2.5 was identified as the most substantial source of HONO (contributing 52.5 %). This study highlights the significant variations in primary HONO sources throughout the day.

Photoinduced Reactions of Nitrate in Aqueous Microdroplets by Triplet Energy Transfer

In-situ Raman spectroscopy of single levitated charged aqueous microdroplets irradiated by dual-beam (266 and 532 nm) lasers demonstrates that the nitrate anion (NO3-) can be depleted in the droplet through an energy transfer mechanism following excitation of sulfanilic acid (SA), a UV-absorbing aromatic organic compound. Upon 266 nm irradiation, a fast decrease of the NO3- concentration was observed when SA is present in the droplet. This photoinduced reaction occurs without the direct photolysis of NO3-. Instead, the rate of NO3- depletion was found to depend on the initial concentration of SA and the pH of the droplet. Based on absorption-emission spectral analysis and excited-state energy calculations, triplet-triplet energy transfer between SA and NO3- is proposed as the underlying mechanism for the depletion of NO3- in aqueous microdroplets. These results suggest that energy transfer mechanisms initiated by light-absorbing organic molecules may play a significant role in NO3- photochemistry.

Roles of Amides on the Formation of Atmospheric HONO and the Nucleation of Nitric Acid Hydrates

Nitrous acid (HONO) is hazardous to the human respiratory system, and the hydrolysis of NO₂ is the source of HONO. Hence, the investigation on the removal and transformation of HONO is urgently established. The effects of amide on the mechanism and kinetics of the formation of HONO with acetamide, formamide, methylformamide, urea, and its clusters of the catalyst were studied theoretically. The results show that amide and its small clusters reduce the energy barrier, the substituent improves the catalytic efficiency, and the catalytic effect order is dimer > monohydrate > monomer. Meanwhile, the clusters composed of nitric acid (HNO₃), amides, and 1-6 water molecules were investigated in the amide-assisted nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) hydrolysis reaction after HONO decomposes by combining the system sampling technique and density functional theory. The study on thermodynamics, intermolecular forces, optics properties of the clusters, as well as the influence of humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and altitude shows that amide molecules promote the clustering and enhance the optical properties. The substituent facilitates the clustering of amide and nitric acid hydrate and lowers the humidity sensitivity of the clusters. The findings will help to control the atmospheric aerosol particle and then reduce the harm of poisonous organic chemicals on human health.

Fractal analysis of impact of PM2.5 on surface O3 sensitivity regime based on field observations

Properties of PM_2.5 that can change aerosol chemistry and photolysis rates have great impacts on O₃ sensitivity regime, further affecting the production rate of surface O₃. However, responses of O₃ sensitivity regime to changes in PM_2.5 levels are difficult to be accurately determined, due to the complexity and nonlinearity of atmospheric chemistry. Here, based on long-term time series (2016-2020) of air quality variables in north and south Taiwan, fractal analysis along with Pearson correlation analysis are used to directly reveal the impacts of PM_2.5 on O₃ sensitivity regime in real atmosphere, by capturing the nonlinear dynamic relations among air pollutants. Great regional and seasonal difference in impacts of PM_2.5 on O₃ sensitivity regime may be ascribed to meteorological factors, PM_2.5 components and levels of SO₂, NO, NO₂, etc. For north Taiwan, increased PM_2.5 level can enhance the sensitivity of O₃ formation to VOC in spring and summer, whereas the opposite effect can be observed in winter. But for south Taiwan, the influence of PM_2.5 on O₃ sensitivity regime is not statistically significant, excluding spring. Furthermore, feasibility and availability of fractal analysis is tested by simulations with Empirical Kinetics Modeling Approach (EKMA). The results demonstrate the capability of fractal analysis to identify the impacts of PM_2.5 on O₃ sensitivity regime in real atmosphere, which can provide suggestions for PM_2.5-O₃ coordinated control strategies in regions suffering combined air pollution.

Reduction and Photoreduction of NO2 in Humic Acid Films as a Source of HONO, ClNO, N2O, NO X , and Organic Nitrogen

Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO), a trace atmospheric gas, is often underestimated in global atmospheric models due to the poor understanding of its daytime sources and sinks. HONO is known to accumulate during nighttime and undergo rapid photodissociation during the day to form NO and highly reactive OH radical, making it important to have accurate atmospheric HONO estimations. Despite its rapid photolysis, recent field observations have found quasi-steady-state concentrations of HONO at midday, suggesting photolytic HONO formation pathways to replenish daytime atmospheric HONO. Recent studies suggest that the presence of complex organic photosensitizers in atmospheric aerosols converts atmospheric NO₂ into HONO. To better understand the effect of environmental photosensitizers in daytime mechanisms of HONO formation, we present here laboratory studies on the heterogeneous photolytic reduction of NO₂ by humic acid films, a proxy for organic chromophoric compounds. The effect of pH and Cl^- in the photosensitized formation of HONO and other nitrogen-containing gases is also investigated. A dual Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) system is utilized to simultaneously perform in situ analysis of condensed-phase reactants and gas-phase products. We find that the rate of HONO formation is faster at lower pHs. Nitrogen incorporation in the complex organic chromophore is observed, suggesting a competing pathway that results in suppressed daytime formation of nitrogenous gases. Significantly, the presence of chloride ions also leads to the organic-mediated photolytic formation of nitrosyl chloride (ClNO), a known precursor of HONO. Overall, this work shows that organic acid photosensitizers can reduce adsorbed NO₂ to form HONO, ClNO, and NO while simultaneously incorporating nitrogen into the organic chromophores present in aerosol.

Gas-Phase Nitrous Acid (HONO) Is Controlled by Surface Interactions of Adsorbed Nitrite (NO2-) on Common Indoor Material Surfaces

Nitrous acid (HONO) is a household pollutant exhibiting adverse health effects and a major source of indoor OH radicals under a variety of lighting conditions. The present study focuses on gas-phase HONO and condensed-phase nitrite and nitrate formation on indoor surface thin films following heterogeneous hydrolysis of NO₂, in the presence and absence of light, and nitrate (NO₃^-) photochemistry. These thin films are composed of common building materials including zeolite, kaolinite, painted walls, and cement. Gas-phase HONO is measured using an incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced ultraviolet absorption spectrometer (IBBCEAS), whereby condensed-phase products, adsorbed nitrite and nitrate, are quantified using ion chromatography. All of the surface materials used in this study can store nitrogen oxides as nitrate, but only thin films of zeolite and cement can act as condensed-phase nitrite reservoirs. For both the photo-enhanced heterogeneous hydrolysis of NO₂ and nitrate photochemistry, the amount of HONO produced depends on the material surface. For zeolite and cement, little HONO is produced, whereas HONO is the major product from kaolinite and painted wall surfaces. An important result of this study is that surface interactions of adsorbed nitrite are key to HONO formation, and the stronger the interaction of nitrite with the surface, the less gas-phase HONO produced.

Integration of Indoor Air Quality Prediction into Healthy Building Design

Healthy building design is an emerging field of architecture and building engineering. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an inevitable factor that should be considered in healthy building design due to its demonstrated links with human health and well-being. This paper proposes to integrate IAQ prediction into healthy building design by developing a simulation toolbox, termed i-IAQ, using MATLAB App Designer. Within the i-IAQ, users can input information of building layout and wall-openings and select air pollutant sources from the database. As an output, the toolbox simulates indoor levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), inhalable particles (PM10), fine particles (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) during the occupied periods. Based on the simulation results, the toolbox also offers diagnosis and recommendations to improve the design. The accuracy of the toolbox was validated by a case study in an apartment where physical measurements of air pollutants took place. The results suggest that designers can integrate the i-IAQ toolbox in building design, so that the potential IAQ issues can be resolved at the early design stage at a low cost. The paper outcomes have the potential to pave a way towards more holistic healthy building design, and novel and cost-effective IAQ management.
