Abstract
Due to the typical volatility of gaseous pollutant methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), the development of a facile, reliable, and accurate onsite environmental surveillance of highly toxic CH3SH faces many challenges, but it is critical to environmental atmosphere assessment and safeguarding public health. Here, we prepared a novel bimetallic carbon dots (Fe&Cu@CDs) nanozyme with high peroxidase-mimicking activity to design a portable hydrogel kit for onsite visual H2O2-self-supplying enzymatic cascade catalytic colorimetric and photothermal signal synergistic amplification dual-modal monitoring of CH3SH in atmospheric environment. Assisted by alcohol oxidase (AOX), CH3SH could be specifically converted into H2O2 for oxidizing chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) catalyzed by Fe&Cu@CDs to produce dark blue ox-TMB with absorption at 652 nm and photothermal characters. Consequently, a CH3SH concentration-dependent change both in naked-eye color and photothermal effect-triggered temperature were observed. By hybridizing AOX-assisted Fe&Cu@CDs + TMB with agarose, a H2O2-self-supplying colorimetric and photothermal signal synergistic amplification sensory hydrogel kit integrated with Color Picker APP-installed smartphone and 660 nm laser-equipped handheld thermal imager for CH3SH was proposed with acceptable results in atmospheric environment around wastepile (e.g., solid waste and food waste piles), which exhibited great potentials to further develop commercial onsite monitoring platforms in warning-early abnormal atmospheric CH3SH for safeguarding environmental health.

Abstract
Nanozyme technology has gained significant regard and been successfully implemented in various applications including chemical sensing, bio-medicine, and environmental monitoring. Fe-CDs were synthesized and characterized well in this study. As compared to HRP (3.7 mM), the Fe-CDs exhibited a higher affinity towards H2O2 (0.2 mM) using the steady-state kinetic assay and stronger catalytic capability by changing the color of TMB to the blue color of the oxidized state, oxTMB. Additionally, an efficient peroxidase mimic, Fe-CDs/GOx, based on the hybrid cascade system to produce in situ H2O2 for the visual detection of glucose (color change: colorless to blue, and then to green), has been developed in detail, with limits of detection (LODs) for H2O2 and glucose of 0.33 μM and 1.17 μM, respectively. The changes further demonstrate a linear relationship between absorbance and H2O2 concentration, ranging from 10 to 60 μM, and for glucose (1 to 60 μM). To assess the accuracy and detection capability of the Fe-CDs/GOx system, we evaluated a real human serum sample obtained from adult males in a local hospital. In conclusion, Fe-CDs serving as a peroxidase mimic have the potential for various applications in the fields of biomedicine and nanozymes.

Abstract
As emerging contaminants in the environment, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have aroused a global health crisis and posed a serious threat to ecological safety and human health. Thus, efficient and accurate onsite detection of ARGs is crucial for environmental surveillance. Here, we presented a colorimetric-photoelectrochemical (PEC) dual-mode bioassay for simultaneous detection of multiple ARGs by smartly incorporating rolling circle amplification (RCA) into a stimuli-responsive DNA nanoassembly, using the tetracycline resistance genes tetA and tetC as models. The tailored DNA nanoassembly containing RCA amplicons hybridized with specific signal probes: CuO nanoflowers-anchored signal DNA1 and HgO nanoparticles-anchored signal DNA2, respectively. Upon exposure to an acidic stimulus, numerous Cu2+ and Hg2+ were released, serving as the reporting agent of colorimetric/PEC dual-mode assay. The released Cu2+ and Hg2+ induced localized surface plasmon resonance shifts in Au nanorods and triangular Ag nanoplates through an etching process, respectively, enabling visual analysis of ARGs with distinguishing color changes. Meanwhile, numerous Cu2+ and Hg2+ triggered the amplified PEC variations via reacting with the photoactive layers of CuS/CdS and ZnS, respectively. Thus, a rapid and ultrasensitive colorimetric/PEC dual-mode detection of multiple ARGs was achieved with the detection limit down to 17.2 aM. Furthermore, such dual-mode bioassay could discriminate single-base mismatch and successfully determine ARGs in E. coli plasmids and sludge samples, holding great promise for point-of-care genetic diagnostics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluoride (F-), an anion with the smallest ionic radius and highest charge density, plays an important role in biomedical and environmental processes, making the development of accurate F- detection methods of great importance. Fluorometric methods with simplicity and sensitivity have gained considerable attention in F- detection. However, their accuracy faces challenges due to issues like autofluorescence interference during real-time light excitation and limited selectivity. Therefore, it is important to establish a simple, real-time light excitation-free, and highly selective method for the accurate determination of F- in complicated samples. RESULTS Herein, a novel phosphorescent approach is developed for the selective and accurate detection of F- in complex samples. Phosphorescence emission CDs@SiO2 is fabricated by confining CDs in a silica protective layer. This design retains the favorable water solubility of silica while benefitting from its inertness, making it resistant to most substances. Furthermore, phosphorescent analysis without real-time light excitation eliminates autofluorescence interference, significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and simplifying sample pretreatment. The specific interaction between F- and the Si-O bond can lead to the degradation of the silica protective layer, exposing the CDs to the solution, resulting in phosphorescence quenching, achieving the highly accurate and sensitive detection of F- with a linear range of 0.001-4 mM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 μM. SIGNIFICANCE This novel F- phosphorescence method based on the metal-free phosphorescent nanomaterial CDs@SiO2 integrates the benefits of no autofluorescence interference, high selectivity, and full aqueous compatibility, and its combination with a smartphone provides a simple, portable, and cost-effective detection platform for accurate and highly sensitive determination of F- in complex samples.

Abstract
In this work, hollow CoS2 particles were prepared by a one-step sulfurization strategy using polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks as the precursor. The morphology and structure of CoS2 have been monitored by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction. The mechanism for the formation of CoS2 is discussed. The reaction time and sulfur content are found to be important factors that affect the morphology and pure phase formation of CoS2, and a hollow semioctahedral morphology of CoS2 with open voids was obtained when the sulfur source was twice as large as the precursor and the reaction time was 24 h. The CoS2 (24 h) particles show an excellent peroxidase-like activity for the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized (oxTMB) by hydrogen peroxide. The polyoxometalate used as a precursor helps to stabilize oxTMB during catalytic oxidation, forming a stable curve platform for at least 8 min. Additionally, the colorimetric detection of hydroquinone is developed with a low detection limit of 0.42 μM. This research provides a new strategy to design hollow materials with high peroxidase-mimicking activity.

Abstract
Carbendazim (CBZ) is a widely used pesticides, and its excessive intake is serious damage to humans and animals. Herein, a stable and sensitive colorimetric aptasensor for rapid detection of CBZ residue has been established based on the enhancement of CBZ-specific aptamer (CZ-13) on oxidase-mimicking activity of octahedral Ag2O nanoparticles (NPs). The CZ-13 aptamer can significantly increase the catalytic activity by promoting the production of superoxide anion (·O2-) on the surface of Ag2O NPs and enhancing the affinity of octahedral Ag2O NPs to 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) molecules. In the presence of CBZ, the quantity of CZ-13 aptamer will be exhausted due to the specific binding to CBZ pesticide. Thus, the rest CZ-13 aptamer no longer enhanced the catalytic activity of octahedral Ag2O NPs, which leads to the change in color of sensing solution. The color change of sensing solution can be easily converted to the corresponding RGB value by a smartphone for quantitative and rapid detection of CBZ. The designed aptasensor has excellent sensitivity and specificity, and the limit of detection was determined as low as 7.35 μg L-1 for CBZ assay. Besides, the aptasensor exhibited good recoveries in the spiked cabbage, apple and cucumber, showing that it may have broad application prospects for detecting CBZ residues in agriculture products.

Abstract
Although the traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been widely applied in pathogen detection and clinical diagnostics, it always suffers from complex procedures, a long incubation time, unsatisfying sensitivity, and a single signal readout. Here, we developed a simple, rapid, and ultrasensitive platform for dual-mode pathogen detection based on a multifunctional nanoprobe integrated with a capillary ELISA (CLISA) platform. The novel capture antibodies-modified capillaries can act as a swab to combine in situ trace sampling and detection procedures, eliminating the dissociation between sampling and detection in traditional ELISA assays. With excellent photothermal and peroxidase-like activity, the Fe3O4@MoS2 nanoprobe with a unique p-n heterojunction was chosen as an enzyme substitute and amplified signal tag to label the detection antibody for further sandwich immune sensing. As the analyte concentration increased, the Fe3O4@MoS2 probe could generate dual-mode signals, including remarkable color changes from the chromogenic substrate oxidation as well as photothermal enhancement. Moreover, to avoid false negative results, the excellent magnetic capability of the Fe3O4@MoS2 probe can be used to pre-enrich the trace analytes, amplifying the detection signal and enhancing the immunoassay's sensitivity. Under optimal conditions, specific and rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 has been realized successfully based on this integrated nanoprobe-enhanced CLISA platform. The detection limits were 5.41 pg·mL-1 for the photothermal assay and 150 pg·mL-1 for the visual colorimetric assay. More importantly, the simple, affordable, and portable platform can also be expanded to rapidly detect other targets such as Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium in practical samples, making it a universal and attractive tool for multiple pathogen analysis and clinical testing in the post COVID-19 era.

Abstract
Carbon monoxide (CO) is not only a highly poisonous gas that brings great health risk, but also a significant signaling molecule in body. However, it is still challengeable for development of alternative colorimetric probes to traditional organic chromophores for simple, sensitive and convenient CO sensing. Here, for the first time, we rationally design a novel hydrophilic AgPt-Fe3O4 nanozyme with a unique heterodimeric nanostructure for colorimetric sensing of CO based on the excellent peroxidase-like catalytic activity as well as highly poisonous effect of CO on the nanozyme's catalytic activity. Both experimental evidence and theoretical calculations reveal the trimetallic AgPt-Fe3O4 nanozyme is susceptible to poisoning with the strongest affinity towards CO compared to individual Fe3O4 or Ag-Fe3O4, which is attributed to the adequate exposure of the active metallic sites and efficient interfacial synergy of unique heterodimeric nanostructure. Accordingly, a novel nanozyme-based colorimetric strategy is developed for CO detection with a low detection limit of 5.6 ppb in solution. Furthermore, the probe can be prepared as very convenient test strips and integrated with the portable smartphone platforms for detecting CO gas samples with a low detection limit of 8.9 ppm. Overall, our work proposes guidelines for the rational design of metallic heterogeneous nanostructure to expand the analytical application of nanozyme.

Abstract
Nanozymes have been widely used to construct colorimetric sensors due to their advantages of cost-effectiveness, high stability, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. The emergence of nanozymes greatly enhanced the detection sensitivity and stability of the colorimetric sensing platform. Recent significant research has focused on designing various sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric analysis. However, with the deepening of research, nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity has also exposed some problems, such as weak affinity and low catalytic activity. In view of the above issues, existing investigations have shown that the catalytic properties of nanozymes can be improved by adding surface modification and changing the structure of nanomaterials. In this review, we summarize the recent trends and advances of colorimetric sensors based on several typical nanozymes with peroxidase-like activities, including noble metals, metal oxides, metal sulfides/metal selenides, and carbon and metal-organic frameworks (MOF). Finally, the current challenges and prospects of colorimetric sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity are summarized and discussed to provide a reference for researchers in related fields.

Abstract
Precise and reliable onsite detection of methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) is of great significance for environmental surveillance. Here, we synthesized a novel blue fluorescence nanozyme CeO2@TPE with high peroxidase-like activity by employing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) tetraphenylethene (TPE) to embed into hollow CeO2 nanospheres. In the presence of ethanol oxidase (AOX) and o-phenylenediamine (OPD), we engineered an enzymatic cascade activation ratiometric fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode system AOX/CeO2@TPE + OPD toward CH3SH. In this design, CH3SH initiated AOX catalytic activity to convert it into H2O2 for activating the peroxidase-like activity of CeO2@TPE, producing •OH for oxidizing the naked-eye colorless OPD into deep yellow 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with an absorption enhancement at ∼425 nm, companied by a new emission peak at ∼550 nm to match with the intrinsic emission at ∼441 nm for observing ratiometric fluorescence response, enabling a ratiometric fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode analysis. Interestingly, both the ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric signals could be gathered for being converted into the hue parameter on a smartphone-based sensor, achieving the onsite visual fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode detection of CH3SH in real environmental media with acceptable results. This study gave a novel insight into designing target-responsive enzymatic cascade activation system-based efficient and reliable dual-mode point-of-care sensors for safeguarding environmental health.

Abstract
Advanced oxidation processes-based catalysis system as the most typical pollutant degradation technology always suffer from poor durability and photo-dependent. Inspired by the fact that some nanomaterials exhibit catalytic properties closer to natural enzymes, a high peroxidase-like activity and stability CeO2@ZIF-8 nanozyme was synthesized in this study for non-photodegradation of dyes pollution. Multiple characterization techniques were applied to prove the successful synthesis of the nanozyme. The influence of different parameters on the catalytic degradation of organic dye by nanozyme was investigated. This nanozyme achieved a maximum degradation efficiency of 99.81% for methyl orange and maintained its catalytic performance in repeated experiments. Possible degradation intermediates and pathways for methyl orange were then proposed. In addition, the CeO2@ZIF-8 loaded starch/agarose films were prepared for the portable and recyclable remediation of real dye wastewater, which maintained more than 80% degradation efficiency after 5 successive cycles. These results suggested that nanozyme based non-photocatalytic system is a potential catalyst for dye degradation and it opens a new avenue to develop high-performance and recyclable catalysts for pollutant remediation.

Abstract
Au-Fe3O4 multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and integrated with lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for dual-mode detection of Salmonella typhimurium. The Au-Fe3O4 NPs not only combined excellent local surface plasmon resonance characteristics and superparamagnetic properties, but also exhibited good photothermal effect. In the detection, antibody-conjugated Au-Fe3O4 NPs first captured S. typhimurium from complex matrix, which was then loaded on the LFIA strip and trapped by the T-line. By observing the color bands with the naked eyes, qualitative detection was performed free of instrument. By measuring the photothermal signal, quantification was achieved with a portable infrared thermal camera. The introduction of magnetic separation achieved the enrichment and purification of target bacteria, thus enhancing the detection sensitivity and reducing interference. This dual-mode LFIA achieved a visual detection limit of 5 × 105 CFU/mL and a photothermal detection limit of 5 × 104 CFU/mL. Compared with traditional Au-based LFIA, this dual-mode LFIA increased the detection sensitivity by 2 orders of magnitude and could be directly applied to unprocessed milk sample. Besides, this dual-mode LFIA showed good reproducibility and specificity. The intra-assay and inter-assay variation coefficients were 3.0% and 7.9%, and with this dual-mode LFIA, other bacteria hardly produced distinguishable signals. Thus, the Au-Fe3O4 NPs-based LFIA has potential to increase the efficiency of pandemic prevention and control. Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticle proved to be a promising alternative reporter for LFIA, achieving multifunctions: target purification, target enrichment, visual qualitation, and instrumental quantification, which improved the limitations of traditional LFIA.

Abstract
Nanozyme technology as an emerging field has been successfully applied to chemical sensing, biomedicine, and environmental monitoring. It is very significant for the advance of this field to construct nanozymes with high catalytic activity by a simple method and to develop their multifunctional applications. Here, a new type of cobalt-doped carbon dots (Co-CDs) nanozymes was designed using vitamin B12 and citric acid as the precursors. The homogeneous cobalt doping at carbon nuclear led the Co-CDs to show significant peroxidase-like activity resembling natural metalloenzymes. Based on the high affinity of Co-CDs to H2O2 (Km = 0.0598 mM), a colorimetric sensor for glucose detection was constructed by combining Co-CDs with glucose oxidase. On account of the high catalytic activity of nanozymes and the cascade strategy, a good linear relationship was obtained from 0.500 to 200 μM, with a detection limit of 0.145 μM. The biosensor has realized the accurate detection of glucose in human serum samples. Moreover, Co-CDs could specifically catalyze H2O2 in cancer cells to generate a variety of reactive oxygen species, leading to the death of cancer cells, which has useful application potential in tumor catalytic therapy. In this work, the catalytic activity of Co-CDs has been adequately exploited, which extends the application of carbon dots in multiple biotechnologies, including biosensing, disease diagnosis, and treatment.

Abstract
Development of a simple and efficient dual-mode analytical technique with the built-in cross reference correction feature is benefit to achieve the highly accurate detection of the target pollutants and avoid the false-positive outputs in environmental media. Here, we synthesized a Fe-doped polydopamine (Fe@PDA)-based nanozyme with prominent peroxide-mimetic enzyme activity and high fluorescence emission ability. On this basis, we designed a dual-recognition strategy-driven fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode detection platform, consisting of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) recognition aptamer-modified Fe@PDA (apt/Fe@PDA) and vancomycin-functionalized Fe3O4 (van/Fe3O4), for L. monocytogenes. Owing to van/Fe3O4-powered magnetic separation, there was a L. monocytogenes concentration-dependent fluorescence enhancement of apt/Fe@PDA for performing fluorescence assay in the precipitate. In this case, the prominent peroxide-mimetic enzyme activity of the residual apt/Fe@PDA in the precipitation could catalyze H2O2 to further oxidate colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, which displayed a L. monocytogenes concentration-dependent absorbance enhancement for carrying out colorimetric assay as well. As a result, a fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode analytical platform was proposed to successfully detect the residual L. monocytogenes in real environmental media with acceptable results. This work showed the great prospects by integrating dual-recognition strategy into fluorescence nanozyme to develop efficient and reliable dual-mode analytical platforms for safeguarding environmental health.
