Characteristics of ZnO–SnO2 Composite Nanofibers as a Photoanode in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Development of ZnO/SnO2/rGO hybrid nanocomposites for effective photocatalytic degradation of toxic dye pollutants from aquatic ecosystems

The impact of ZnO/SnO₂/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (ZnO/SnO₂/rGO NCs) for improved photocatalytic degradation of organic dye pollution is examined in this study. The developed ternary nanocomposites had a variety of characteristics that were detected, such as crystallinity, recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, energy gap, and surface morphologies. When rGO was added to the mixture, the optical band gap energy of ZnO/SnO₂ was lowered, which improved the photocatalytic activity. Additionally, in comparison to ZnO, ZnO/rGO, SnO₂/rGO samples, the ZnO/SnO₂/rGO nanocomposites demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic effectiveness for the destruction of orange II (99.8%) and reactive red 120 dye (97.02%), respectively after 120 min exposure to sunlight. The high electron transport properties of the rGO layers, which make it feasible to efficiently separate electron-hole pairs, are attributed to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/SnO₂/rGO nanocomposites. According to the results, synthesized ZnO/SnO₂/rGO nanocomposites are a cost-efficient option for removing dye pollutants from an aqueous ecosystem. Studies show that ZnO/SnO₂/rGO nanocomposites are effective photocatalysts and may one day serve as the ideal material to reduce water pollution.

Water Purification through a Novel Electrospun Carbon Nanofiber Membrane

Here, we report water purification through novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based carbon nanofibers synthesized through the electrospinning technique. In our novel approach, we mix PVA and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with green tea solutions with different concentrations to synthesize carbon-based nanofibers (CNFs) and further calcine at 280 °C for carbonization. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show the diameter of the nanofibers to be ∼500 nm, which decreases by about 50% after carbonization, making them more suitable candidates for the filtration process. Next, using these carbon nanofibers, we prepare filters for water purification. The synthesized CNF filters show excellent performance and successful removal of contaminants from the water by analyzing the CNF-based filters before and after the filtration of water through SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Our SEM and EDX results indicate the presence of various nanoparticles consisting of different elements such as Mg, Na, Ti, S, Si, and Fe on the filters, after the filtration of water. Additionally, the SEM results show that PVA and TEOS concentrations play an important role in the formation, uniformity, homogeneity, and particularly in the reduction of the nanofiber diameter.

Thermally Assisted Grinding of Cassiterite Associated with Pollimetallic Ore: A Comparison between Microwave and Conventional Furnaces

We investigated the influence of microwave and conventional heating pretreatments on the grinding of cassiterite associated with pollimetallic ore. The minerals that exhibited a stronger microwave absorption ability crushed first, which is the main difference between the microwave and the traditional heating pretreatments. The distribution of Fe, Pb, Zn, and Sn increased in the fine size range (−0.425 mm). The Fe and Pb grades in the size ranges of −3.2 + 2 mm and −2 + 1 mm after the microwave pretreatment (6 kW, 1 min) were lower than those of the traditional heating (12 kW, 400 °C, 20 min), indicating that the microwave selective heating was beneficial for pyrite and jamesonite. The grade and distribution of Sn decreased significantly in the size ranges of −3.2 + 2 mm and −2 + 1 mm and increased in the size ranges of −0.425 + 0.15 mm and −0.15 + 0.074 mm. Microwave heating treatment promoted the grinding of sulfide ore and reduced the cassiterite overgrinding.

Measuring the Electrical and Photonic Properties of Cobalt Oxide-Containing Composite Carbon Fibers

In this work, cobalt acetate was incorporated into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer through electrospinning as the cobalt oxide source. After oxidization and pyrolysis, a PAN-derived composite carbon fiber containing cobalt oxide was obtained. Measuring the electrical and photonic properties of the composite fiber under visible light irradiation was performed to evaluate the photoelectric behavior of the composite fiber. The p-type semiconducting behavior of the composite fiber was confirmed by measuring the open circuit voltage of a photochemical fuel cell consisting of the photosensitive electrode made from the composite fiber. The application of the composite fiber for glucose sensing was demonstrated.
