Abstract
Strong fluorescence is a general feature of dipyrrolonaphthyridinediones bearing two nitrophenyl substituents. Methyl groups simultaneously being weakly electron-donating and inducing steric hindrance appear to be a key structural parameter that allows for significant emission enhancement, whereas Et2N groups cause fluorescence quenching. The magnitude of two-photon absorption increases if 4-nitrophenyl substituents are present while the contribution of Et2N groups is detrimental.

Abstract
Time-resolved fluorescence (TF) with high-enough resolution enables recording of a coherent vibrational spectrum (CVS). Because a CVS attained via TF (CVSF) is descended from the frequency modulation of the fluorescence spectrum, it gives the vibrational spectrum of the emitting state. Therefore, CVSF can be a powerful tool for the identification of an emitting state along with the investigation of molecular dynamics in excited states. Herein, we report CVSF of a Schiff base salicylaldehyde azine (SAA) that has two possible excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) sites. The ESIPT time of SAA in dichloromethane is determined to be 22 fs. Quantitative agreement between the experimental CVSF and calculated CVSF of the mono-keto isomer demonstrates that ESIPT indeed occurs in SAA only on one side. More importantly, we show that a CVSF can be utilized to identify an emitting species and its state with the help of quantum chemical calculations. Implications of the CVSF obtained by assuming impulsive excitation of vibrations are discussed in terms of the molecular mechanism of ESIPT and the generation of nuclear wave packets in the product state.

Abstract
Biothiols play an important role in many physiological and pathological processes, especially in the occurrence of oxidative stress caused by abnormal cysteine (Cys) concentration. Therefore, it is particularly critical to develop a method that can specifically identify Cys to avoid interference from other biological analytes. However, most Cys-specific fluorescent probes are difficult to distinguish between homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH). In this work, to avoid the interference of Hcy and GSH, we developed a fluorescent probe triarylimidazole-naphthalimide-piperazine-sulfonyl benzoxadiazole (TNP-SBD-Cl) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) on platform of naphthalimide-sulfonyl benzoxadiazole (SBD), the main SBD 4-chlorine groups have mild reactivity to undergo substitution and rearrangement to distinguish Hcy and GSH. The TNP-SBD-Cl response to Cys would turn on FRET and generate a new yellow fluorescence with a large Stokes shift (157 nm), and with excellent selectivity and low detection limit (0.87 μM). Moreover, TNP-SBD-Cl can be used to monitor Cys in living HeLa cells with low cytotoxicity, suggesting that it has markedly diagnostic significance in physiological and pathological processes.

Abstract
An asymmetric two-way proton transfer molecule 3-(benzo[d]-thiazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde (BTHMB) with the function of white-light emission was synthesized in a recent experiment (Bhattacharyya, A.; Mandal, S. K.; Guchhait, N. J. Phys. Chem. A 2019, 123, 10246). The particularity of this molecule is that there are two possible forms, one of which contained a six-membered H-bonded network toward a N atom (BTHMB-NH) present in the molecule as a proton acceptor and the other was toward an O atom (BTHMB-OH). Unfortunately, the experimental work lacked the theoretical explanation about the determination of the BTHMB-NH form and its excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process under different solvents. Therefore, this study has explored these two points by means of the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method. The calculated relative energy and potential energy profile (PEP) of the transformation between BTHMB-NH and BTHMB-OH forms illustrated that BTHMB-NH was more stable, and the transfer from BTHMB-NH to BTHMB-OH was almost impossible at both S0 and S1 states under all solvents due to high potential energy barriers (PEBs) (11.67-21.59 kcal/mol). These calculated results provided the theoretical explanation and verification for the conclusion that the BTHMB molecule exists in the BTHMB-NH form in the experiment. Subsequently, the constructed PEPs of the ESIPT process for BTHMB-NH have proved that it was prone to the ESIPT process due to low PEBs (0.11-0.28 kcal/mol) at the S1 state. In particular, as the solvent polarity increased, the intensity of the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) (O3-H4···N5) increased and the ESIPT process was more likely to occur. In addition, the twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) process was studied to explore the possible fluorescence quenching pathway of BTHMB-NH. Based on the PEPs of BTHMB-NH-T as a function of the N5-C6-C7-C8 dihedral angle at the S0 and S1 states, it is seen that the S0 state TICT process was inhibited due to the large PEBs (16.45-23.93 kcal/mol). Although the S1 state PEBs have been greatly reduced, they were still maintained at about 3.60 kcal/mol (3.60-3.84 kcal/mol), and hence, this process was still relatively difficult to occur. Due to the fact that BTHMB can be regarded as a standard in future designs involving red light and solvent-specific white-light emitters, a certain amount of investigative work on the ESIPT process was done in detail, and it paved the way for future research on the directionality of ESIPT in double ESIPT probes.

Abstract
As one kind of important disinfectant and reactive oxygen species (ROS), hypochlorite (ClO-), plays vital roles in both water treatment and cell homeostasis. In this work, by decorating a series of groups with different electron donating and withdrawing properties on tetraphenylethene (TPE), four aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based fluorescent probes containing C˭C double bonds as the potential reaction sites named Probe A, B, C and D were constructed, and their sensing performance for ClO- was systematically studied. The results showed that the substituents can not only effectively tune the photophysical properties of the probes, but also make a significant impact on their sensing performance for ClO-. Combined with the theoretical calculation results, it can be inferred that the reactivity of the probes for ClO- can be greatly enhanced with the increase of electron cloud density on the C˭C double bonds by the introduction of strong electron-donating group (EDG) and electron-withdrawing group (EWG) adjacent to the double bonds. Finally, the best performing Probe D was selected and then successfully applied to ClO- detection in real water samples and live cell imaging.

Abstract
A new fluorescence probe L, which featured with a large Stokes shift (216 nm), was designed for sensitive detection of cysteine (Cys) and a potential sensing mechanism derived from excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was proposed. More importantly, probe L exhibits higher selective to Cys than other amino acid due to its specific cyclization between acrylate group and Cys. Meanwhile, the probe L shows a low detection limit of 8.82 × 10-8 M, which is enough for detecting Cys in organisms. Furthermore, this probe displays high biocompatibility and can image Cys in living cells.

Abstract
The latent fingerprints (LFPs) at the crime scene are unique and stable, which are considered as an important clue in criminal justice and forensic identification. Herein, a butterfly-shaped molecule DPTS with solid fluorescence plus excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) properties was used to develop for enhancing the visualization of the LFPs. Considering the solid fluorescence of DPTS, the color and efficiency of DPTS with a large Stokes shift (216 nm) can be tuned by changing the morphology of its aggregates, and gradually red-shifted (green-yellow-red) with increasing water content. Furthermore, its effectiveness for the detection of LFPs was demonstrated on various different substrates including paper box, tinfoil and weighting paper. The emissive fingerprint of DPTS obtained gave good fluorescence images with high contrast and resolution such as the core, delta, bifurcation, ridge termination, independent ridge and pores. Caging of the phenol donor of DPTS with a sensitive biomarker group provided DPTS-ONOO-, which had high sensitive with detection limit of 5 nM and the quantification limit of 21 nM toward ONOO-. Modularly derived DPTS-ONOO- was synthesized and demonstrated specific fluorescence imaging of exogenous and endogenous peroxynitrite (ONOO-) in living macrophage cells.

Abstract
Large (mega) Stokes shift molecules have shown great potential in white light emission for optoelectronic applications, such as flat panel display technology, light-emitting diodes, photosensitizers, molecular probes, cellular and bioimaging, and other applications. This review aims to summarize recent developments of white light generation that incorporate a large Stokes shift component, key approaches to designing large Stokes shift molecules, perspectives on future opportunities, and remaining challenges confronting this emerging research field. After a brief introduction of feasible pathways in generating white light, exemplifications of large Stokes shift molecules as white light candidates from organic and inorganic-based materials are illustrated. Various possible ways to design such molecules have been revealed by integrating the photophysical mechanisms that are essential to produce red-shifted emission upon photoexcitation, such as excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), excited state geometrical relaxation or structural deformation, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) alongside the different formations of aggregates, interplay between monomer and excimer emission, host-guest interaction, and lastly metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) via harvesting triplet state. Furthermore, previously reported fluorescent materials are described and categorized based on luminescence behaviors on account of the Stokes shifts value. This review will serve as a rationalized introduction and reference for researchers who are interested in exploring large or mega Stokes shift molecules, and will motivate new strategies along with instigation of persistent efforts in this prominent subject area with great avenues.

Abstract
Quick and effective detection of biothiols in biological fluids has gained increasing attention due to its vital biological functions. In this paper, a novel reversible fluorescence chemosensor (L-Cu2+) based on a benzocoumarin-Cu2+ ensemble has been developed for the detection of biothiols (Cys, Hcy and GSH) in human urine. The chemosensing ensemble (L-Cu2+) contains a 2:1 stoichiometry structure between fluorescent ligand L and paramagnetic Cu2+. L was found to exclusively bond with Cu2+ ions accompanied with a dramatic fluorescence quenching maximum at 443 nm and an increase of an absorbance band centered at 378 nm. Then, the in situ generated fluorescence sluggish ensemble, L-Cu2+, was successfully used as a chemosensor for the detection of biothiols with a fluorescence "OFF-ON" response modality. Upon the addition of biothiols, the decomplexation of L-Cu2+ led to the liberation of the fluorescent ligand, L, resulting in the recovery of fluorescence and absorbance spectra. Studies revealed that L-Cu2+ possesses simple synthesis, excellent stability, high sensitivity, reliability at a broad pH range and desired renewability (at least 5 times). The practical application of L-Cu2+ was then demonstrated by the detection of biothiols in human urine sample.

A diazabenzoperylene derivative as ratiometric fluorescent probe for cysteine with super large Stokes shift. Anal Bioanal Chem 2020; 412:2687-2696. Abstract
Biothiols, including cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH), play key roles in biological processes, and detecting such thiols selectively is critical for understanding functions of biothiols. In this work, a pyridazine annelated perylene-based fluorescent probe PAPC is synthesized for highly selective detection of Cys. PAPC exhibits strong blue emission in PBS, while the red emission at 605 nm can be observed in the presence of Cys. The probe PAPC shows ratiometric fluorescence (I605/I460) detection of Cys with wide linear range of 1-120 μM and low detection limit of 0.19 μM. Super large Stokes shift (170 nm) and ratiometric fluorescence endow the probe low background signal. The discrimination of Cys over Hcy and GSH can be achieved through the difference of the ratiometric fluorescence. In addition, the probe has been proven to track Cys in real samples such as urine and HeLa cells. Therefore, PAPC probe is a promising candidate for detecting Cys in practical application.
