Abstract
Materials featuring well-defined nanoscale channels offer inherent advantages in the selective transport of gases, liquids, and ions, making them pivotal in applications such as molecular separation, catalysis and energy storage. A crucial challenge lies in assembling ordered nanochannel structures and translating these microscopic architectures into macroscopic regular distributions to enhance performance. Nanocomposites provide a promising solution by incorporating nanoscale material (e.g., filler) that significantly enhances macroscale properties of matrix (e.g., polymer). In this review, we spotlight nanocomposite membranes nanocomposite membranes that utilize confinement effects between filler and matrix to precisely control nanochannel apertures, surface properties, and channel distribution for efficient separation of target systems. We discussed the underlying design principles, channel architectures, and strategies for optimizing polymer-filler interfaces and nanochannel manipulation within functional membranes. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental mechanisms of mass transport, and the structure-property-performance relationships within the nanocomposite membranes towards molecular separation. This work aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how these nanocomposite membranes can be further developed to meet the demands of industrial and environmental applications.

Abstract
In the present study, a zeolitic imidazolate framework with mixed ligands, ZIF-8-90, was synthesized and embedded into an ultrathin polydimethyldiethoxysilane (PDMDES) matrix to prepare a ZIF-8-90/PDMDES mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for the enhanced recovery of alcohols from dilute aqueous solutions via pervaporation, using a facile solution coating method. The synthesized ZIF-8-90 particles demonstrated superior hydrophobicity and thermal stability compared to those of both ZIF-8 and ZIF-90 particles. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and sorption ability for alcohols of the ZIF-8-90/PDMDES MMM were significantly improved, attributed to the incorporation of mixed-ligand ZIF-8-90. Notably, the MMMs displayed two distinct cross-sectional morphologies: (1) ZIF-8-90 particles enveloped by PDMDES polymer forming filler bulges and (2) an accumulation of ZIF-8-90 particles resembling a brick-wall-like structure. The MMM incorporating 2.5 wt % ZIF-8-90 exhibited the optimal performance among the fabricated MMMs with various ZIF-8-90 loadings, spanning from 0 to 3.2 wt %. The effects of feed concentrations and operation temperatures were systematically investigated. The best pervaporation performance was achieved using the 2.5 wt % ZIF-8-90-filled MMM, effectively separating a 5.0 wt % ethanol/water mixture at 60 °C, yielding a distinguished total flux of 7.70 kg·m-2·h-1, an improved separation factor of 9.96, and an extraordinarily high PSI of 68.99 kg·m-2·h-1. Comparative analyses highlighted the superior pervaporation performance of the ZIF-8-90/PDMDES MMM over ZIF-8/PDMDES MMM, ZIF-90/PDMDES MMM, and other MMMs, underscoring its potential for practical applications in alcohol recovery.

Abstract
Polymeric membranes with high permselective performance are desirable for energy-saving bioalcohol separations. However, it remains challenging to design membrane microstructures with low-resistance channels and a thin thickness for fast alcohol transport. Herein, we demonstrate highly crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with ordered nanochannels as tunable transport layers for efficient butanol/water separation. The thickness was well-regulated by altering the concentration and molar ratio of two aldehyde monomers with different reactivity. The surface-integrated poly(dimethylsiloxane) produced defect-free and hydrophobic COF membranes. The membrane with continuous transport channels exhibited an exceptional flux of up to 18.8 kg m-2 h-1 and a pervaporation separation index of 217.7 kg m-2 h-1 for separating 5 wt % n-butanol/water. The separation efficiency exceeded that of analogous membranes. The calculated mass-transfer coefficient of butanol followed an inverse relationship with the COF membrane thickness. Consequently, this work reveals the great potential of crystalline polymeric membranes with high-density nanopores for biofuel recovery.

Abstract
The hydrophobic nature of inorganic zeolite particles plays a crucial role in the efficacy of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the separation of trichloroethylene (TCE) through pervaporation. This study presents a novel approach to further augment the hydrophobicity of ZSM-5. The ZSM-5 zeolite molecular sieve was subjected to modification using three different silane coupling agents, namely, n-octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570), and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550). The water contact angles of the resulting OTES@ZSM-5, KH-570@ZSM-5, and KH-550@ZSM-5 particles exhibited significant increases from 97.2° to 112.8°, 109.1°, and 102.7°, respectively, thereby indicating a notable enhancement in hydrophobicity. Subsequently, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by incorporating the aforementioned silane-modified ZSM-5 particles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), leading to a considerable improvement in the adsorption selectivity of these membranes towards trichloroethylene (TCE). The findings indicate that the PDMS membrane with a 20 wt.% OTES@ZSM-5 particle loading exhibits superior pervaporation performance. When subjected to a temperature of 30 °C, flow rate of 100 mL/min, and vacuum of 30 Kpa, the separation factor and total flux of a 3 × 10-7 wt.% TCE solution reach 328 and 155 gm-2·h-1, respectively. In comparison to the unmodified ZSM-5/PDMS membrane, the separation factor demonstrates a 41% increase, while the TCE flux experiences a 6% increase. Consequently, this approach effectively enhances the pervaporation separation capabilities of the PDMS membrane for TCE.

Abstract
The growing interest in the production of biofuels has motivated numerous studies on separation techniques that allow the separation/concentration of organics produced by fermentation, improving productivity and performance. In this work, the preparation and characterization of new butanol-selective membranes was reported. The prepared membranes had a hollow fiber configuration and consisted of two dense selective layers: a first layer of PEBA and a second (outer) layer of PDMS. The membranes were tested to evaluate their separation performance in the selective removal of organics from a synthetic ABE solution. Membranes with various thicknesses were prepared in order to evaluate the effect of the PDMS protective layer on permeant fluxes and membrane selectivity. The mass transport phenomena in the pervaporation process were characterized using a resistances-in-series model. The experimental results showed that PEBA as the material of the dense separating layer is the most favorable in terms of selectivity towards butanol with respect to the other components of the feed stream. The addition of a protective layer of PDMS allows the sealing of possible pinholes; however, its thickness should be kept as small as possible since permeation fluxes decrease with increasing thickness of PDMS and this material also has greater selectivity towards acetone compared to other feed components.

Abstract
The effects of the nitrogen source and buffers used in butanol production with Clostridium beijerinckii TISTR 1461 from sweet sorghum stem juice (SSJ) containing 60 g/L of total sugar were first studied in this paper. Among the various nitrogen sources (dried spent yeast, urea, ammonium acetate, ammonium sulfate), urea was found to be the most suitable for butanol production. SSJ supplemented with urea (0.64 g/L) and cocktail buffers (KH2PO4, 0.5 g/L; K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L; ammonium acetate, 2.2 g/L) gave the highest butanol concentration (PB, 10.13 g/L). Then, the capability of immobilized C. beijerinckii TISTR 1461 cells for butanol fermentation was investigated. Two residual waste materials were examined as immobilized cell carriers. Bamboo chopstick pieces were more appropriate as carriers for cell immobilization than cigarette filter tips. The PB value of the immobilized cells on the bamboo chopstick pieces was ~13% higher than that on the cigarette filter tips. Using the response surface methodology (RSM), 1.9 cm bamboo chopstick pieces with a carrier loading of 1:32 (w/v) were the optimum conditions for cell immobilization for butanol production. Under these conditions, the PB value was 11.62 g/L. To improve the butanol production efficiency, a gas stripping system (GS) was connected to the fermenter. It was found that the PB (14.02 g/L) and butanol productivity (QB, 0.29 g/L·h) values improved by ~21% compared to butanol fermentation using no gas stripping.

Abstract
Zeolite-polymer composite membranes have become promising and effective materials for the pervaporative separation of liquids, especially for isomeric mixtures. In this paper, silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been used to investigate the separation of dichlorobenzene (DCB) isomers via pervaporation for the first time. Silicalite-1 zeolites modified by the silane coupling agent, NH3-C3H6-Si(OC2H5)3, have been incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Then, the silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been successfully prepared on porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) supports. The morphology and structure of the silicalite-1 zeolites and silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and BET techniques. The results show that the modified silicalite-1 zeolite particles have smaller pore sizes dispersed more uniformly in the active layers of the silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes and present fewer aggregation and pinholes formed by the accumulation of zeolite particles. The silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes are all dense and continuous with good homogeneity. To evaluate the pervaporative separation performance of the DCB isomers, the unmodified and modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been further tested in single-isomer and binary-isomer systems at 60 °C. The modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes present higher DCB isomer separation factors. The separation factors of the modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes in the binary-isomer systems for p-/o-DCB and p-/m-DCB are 3.53 and 5.63, respectively. The permeate flux of p-DCB through the modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes in the p-/o-DCB binary-isomer system is 116.7 g m-2 h-1 and in the p-/m-DCB binary-isomer system, it is 93.5 g m-2 h-1. The result provides a new approach towards the pervaporative separation of DCB isomers from their mixture for future industrialization applications.

Abstract
Cellulosic n-butanol from renewable lignocellulosic biomass has gained increased interest. Previously, we have engineered Clostridium cellulovorans, a cellulolytic acidogen, to overexpress the bifunctional butyraldehyde/butanol dehydrogenase gene adhE2 from C. acetobutylicum for n-butanol production from crystalline cellulose. However, butanol production by this engineered strain had a relatively low yield of approximately 0.22 g/g cellulose due to the coproduction of ethanol and acids. We hypothesized that strengthening the carbon flux through the central butyryl-CoA biosynthesis pathway and increasing intracellular NADH availability in C. cellulovorans adhE2 would enhance n-butanol production. In this study, thiolase (thlACA ) from C. acetobutylicum and 3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase (hbdCT ) from C. tyrobutyricum were overexpressed in C. cellulovorans adhE2 to increase the flux from acetyl-CoA to butyryl-CoA. In addition, ferredoxin-NAD(P)+ oxidoreductase (fnr), which can regenerate the intracellular NAD(P)H and thus increase butanol biosynthesis, was also overexpressed. Metabolic flux analyses showed that mutants overexpressing these genes had a significantly increased carbon flux toward butyryl-CoA, which resulted in increased production of butyrate and butanol. The addition of methyl viologen as an electron carrier in batch fermentation further directed more carbon flux towards n-butanol biosynthesis due to increased reducing equivalent or NADH. The engineered strain C. cellulovorans adhE2-fnrCA -thlACA -hbdCT produced n-butanol from cellulose at a 50% higher yield (0.34 g/g), the highest ever obtained in batch fermentation by any known bacterial strain. Abstract
The distillation-based purification of α,β and α,ω-diols is energy and resource intensive, as well as time consuming. Pervaporation separation is considered to be a remarkable energy efficient membrane technology for purification of diols. Thus, as a core pervaporation process, hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes for the removal of water from 1,2-hexanediol (1,2-HDO) and organophilic polydimethylsiloxane-polysulfone (PDMS-PSF) membranes for the removal of isopropanol from 1,5 pentanediol (1,5-PDO) were employed. For 1,2-HDO/water separation using a feed having a 1 : 4 weight ratio of 1,2-HDO/water, the membrane prepared using 4 vol% glutaraldehyde (GA4) showed the best performance, yielding a flux of 0.59 kg m-2 h-1 and a separation factor of 175 at 40 °C. In the organophilic pervaporation separation of the 1,5-PDO/IPA feed having a 9 : 1 weight ratio of components, the PDMS membrane prepared with a molar ratio of TEOS alkoxy groups to PDMS hydroxyl groups of 70 yielded a flux of 0.12 kg m-2 h-1 and separation factor of 17 638 at 40 °C. Long term stability analysis found that both hydrophilic (PVA) and organophilic (PDMS) membranes retained excellent pervaporation output over 18 days' continuous exposure to the feed. Both the hydrophilic and organophilic membranes exhibited promising separation performance at elevated operating conditions, showing their great potential for purification of α,β and α,ω-diols.

Abstract
Thanks to their well-defined molecular sieving and stability, zeolites have been proposed in selective membrane separations, such as gas separation and pervaporation. For instance, the incorporation of zeolites into polymer phases to generate composite (or mixed matrix) membranes revealed important advances in pervaporation. Therefore, the goal of this review is to compile and elucidate the latest advances (over the last 2-3 years) of zeolite applications in pervaporation membranes either combining zeolites or polymers. Here, particular emphasis has been focused on relevant insights and findings in using zeolites in pervaporative azeotropic separations and specific aided applications, together with novel concepts of membranes. A brief background of the pervaporation process is also given. According to the findings of this review, we provide future perspectives and recommendations for new researchers in the field.
