Pt(II) Phosphors Featuring Both Dicarbene and Functional Biazolate Chelates: Synthesis, Luminescent Properties, and Applications in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Bis-tridentate Ir(III) Phosphors and Blue Hyperphosphorescence with Suppressed Efficiency Roll-Off at High Brightness

Narrowband blue emitters are indispensable in achieving ultrahigh-definition OLED displays that satisfy the stringent BT 2020 standard. Hereby, a series of bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes bearing electron-deficient imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-ylidene carbene coordination fragments and 2,6-diaryloxy pyridine ancillary groups were designed and synthesized. They exhibited deep blue emission with quantum yields of up to 89% and a radiative lifetime of 0.71 μs in the DPEPO host matrix, indicating both the high efficiency and excellent energy transfer process from the host to dopant. The OLED based on Irtb1 showed an emission at 468 nm with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.7%. Moreover, the hyper-OLED with Irtb1 as a sensitizer for transferring energy to terminal emitter v-DABNA exhibited a narrowband blue emission at 472 nm and full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 24 nm, a maximum EQE of 23.5%, and EQEs of 19.7, 16.1, and 12.9% at a practical brightness of 100, 1000, and 5000 cd/m2, respectively.

Structural Engineering of Iridium(III) Phosphors with Imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-ylidene Cyclometalates for Efficient Blue Electroluminescence

Iridium(III) complexes are particularly noted for their excellent potentials in fabrication of blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but the severe efficiency roll-off largely hampered their practical applications. To reveal the underlying characteristics, three Ir(III) complexes, namely f-ct5c, f-ct5d, and f-ct11, bearing imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-ylidene cyclometalates are prepared and characterized in detail. Both f-ct5c and f-ct5d (also their mixture f-ct5mix) gave intensive blue emissions peaking at ≈465 nm with short radiative lifetimes of 1.76 and 2.45 µs respectively, in degassed toluene. Alternatively, f-ct11 with two 4-tert-butylphenyl substituents on each imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-ylidene entity, possessed a bluish-green emission (508 nm) together with an extended radiative lifetime of 34.3 µs in the dispersed PMMA matrix. Consequently, the resulting solution-processed OLED with f-ct11 delivered a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) of 6.5% with serious efficiency roll-offs. In contrast, f-ct5mix based device achieved a high EQEmax of 27.2% and the EQE maintained at 23.0% of 1000 cd m-2 . Furthermore, the hyper-OLEDs with f-ct5mix as the sensitizer and v-DABNA as the terminal emitter afford narrowed emission with a considerably high EQEmax exceeding 32%, affirming the potential of f-ct5mix to serve as both the emitter and sensitizer in OLEDs.

Luminescent Complexes of Platinum, Iridium, and Coinage Metals Containing N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Design, Structural Diversity, and Photophysical Properties

The employment of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to design luminescent metal compounds has been the focus of recent intense investigations because of the strong σ-donor properties, which bring stability to the whole system and tend to push the d-d dark states so high in energy that they are rendered thermally inaccessible, thereby generating highly emissive complexes for useful applications such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), or featuring chiroptical properties, a field that is still in its infancy. Among the NHC complexes, those containing organic chromophores such as naphthalimide, pyrene, and carbazole exhibit rich emission behavior and thus have attracted extensive interest in the past five years, especially carbene coinage metal complexes with carbazolate ligands. In this review, the design strategies of NHC-based luminescent platinum and iridium complexes with large spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) are described first. Subsequent paragraphs illustrate the recent advances of luminescent coinage metal complexes with nucleophilic- and electrophilic-based carbenes based on silver, gold, and copper metal complexes that have the ability to display rich excited state emissions in particular via thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). The luminescence mechanism and excited state dynamics are also described. We then summarize the advance of NHC-metal complexes in the aforementioned fields in recent years. Finally, we propose the development trend of this fast-growing field of luminescent NHC-metal complexes.

Deep Blue Phosphorescence from Platinum Complexes Featuring Cyclometalated N-Pyridyl Carbazole Ligands with Monocarborane Clusters (CB11H12-)

The utilization of deep blue phosphorescent materials in high-performance displays and solid-state lighting requires high quantum efficiencies and color purities. Here, we describe the preparation and luminescent properties of novel platinum triplet emitters featuring cyclometalated N-pyridyl-carbazole ligands functionalized with closo-monocarborane clusters [CB₁₁H₁₂]^-. All reported complexes were fully characterized by using standard small molecule techniques (UV-vis, cyclic voltammetry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)), and their solid-state structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction. These platinum phosphors emit in the blue region of the visible wavelength spectrum in both the solid and solution states. Complex 4a exhibits the highest luminous efficiency at λ_em = 439 nm with a photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 60% by dispersing in a PMMA matrix. Electrochemical and computational studies of complexes 4a and 4b revealed that the blue phosphorescence originates mainly from intraligand ³π → π* (³ILCT) transitions with relatively small ³MLCT mixing. A deep-blue OLED containing 4a as the light-emitting dopant was successfully fabricated using a solution-processed method, and the device exhibited blue photoluminescence with CIE coordinates of (0.17, 0.15) and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max) value of 6.2%. This article represents the pioneering study of a deep blue PhOLED using a Pt complex bearing a closo-monocarborane anion substituent, providing a new avenue into the preparation of novel triplet emitters based on boron-rich cluster anions.

Chameleonic Photo- and Mechanoluminescence in Pyrazolate-Bridged NHC Cyclometalated Platinum Complexes

DFT investigations on the ground (GS) and the first triplet (T₁) excited state potential energy surfaces (PES) were performed on a new series of platinum-butterfly complexes, [{Pt(C^∧C*)(μ-Rpz)}₂] (Rpz: pz, 1; 4-Mepz, 2; 3,5-dmpz, 3; 3,5-dppz, 4), containing a cyclometalated NHC in their wings. The geometries of two close-lying local minima corresponding to butterfly spread conformers, 1s-4s, and butterfly folded ones, 1f-4f, with long and short Pt-Pt separations, respectively, were optimized in the GS and T₁ PES. A comparison of the GS and T₁ energy profiles revealed that an opposite trend is obtained in the relative stability of folded and spread conformers, the latter being more stabilized in their GS. Small ΔG (s/f) along with small-energy barriers in the GS support the coexistence of both kinds of conformers, which influence the photo- and mechanoluminescence of these complexes. In 5 wt % doped PMMA films in the air, these complexes exhibit intense sky-blue emissions (PLQY: 72.0-85.9%) upon excitation at λ ≤ 380 nm arising from ³IL/MLCT excited states, corresponding to the predominant 1s-4s conformers. Upon excitation at longer wavelengths (up to 450 nm), the minor 1f-4f conformers afford a blue emission as well, with PLQY still significant (40%-60%). In the solid state, the as-prepared powder of 4 exhibits a greenish-blue emission with QY ∼ 29%, mainly due to ³IL/³MLCT excited states of butterfly spread molecules, 4s. Mechanical grinding resulted in an enhanced and yellowish-green emission (QY ∼ 51%) due to the ³MMLCT excited states of butterfly folded molecules, 4f, in such a way that the mechanoluminescence has been associated with an intramolecular structural change induced by mechanical grinding.

Enhancement of the Photofunction of Phosphorescent Pt(II) Cyclometalated Complexes Driven by Substituents: Solid-State Luminescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Ligand functionalization is an attractive strategy for enhancing the performance of metal-based phosphorescent emitters. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes Pt3 and Pt4 containing organosilyl-substituted (2-(2-thienyl)pyridine) ligands and compare their properties with those of Pt1 (no substituent) and Pt2 (organocarbon substituent). The photophysical characteristics of these molecules, including their absorption and phosphorescence spectra, phosphorescence quantum yield and lifetime, were investigated. The molecular structures were revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Under UV light irradiation, Pt2-Pt4 emitted intense orange phosphorescence in the solid state because of the bulkiness of their side chains (up to Φ_P: 0.49). Optically pure (-)-(S)_Si-Pt4 and (+)-(R)_Si-Pt4 were prepared using the optically active ligands (+)-L4 and (-)-L4, respectively. The chiroptical properties of (+)-(R)_Si-Pt4, which has an asymmetric silicon atom, were investigated. Circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence measurements showed that these structural motifs are suitable for applications in chiroptical phosphorescent materials.

Two platinum(ii) complexes with a 4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole derivative as an ancillary ligand for efficient green OLEDs

Two new cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes ((TN₃T)Pt(dptp), (4tfmppy)Pt(dptp)) with 2',6'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,3'-bipyridine (TN₃T) and 4-trifluoromethylphenylpyridine (4tfmppy) as the cyclometalated ligands and the nitrogen heterocycle 2-(4,5-diphenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)phenol (dptp) as the ancillary ligand were developed. Both complexes are green phosphors with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields (λ_max = 532 nm, Φ_p = 65% for (TN₃T)Pt(dptp) and λ_max = 502 nm, Φ_p = 71% for (4tfmppy)Pt(dptp)) in CH₂Cl₂ solutions at room temperature, respectively. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with single-emitting layer and double-emitting layer structures were fabricated with good performances. Particularly, the double-emitting layer device D2 based on the complex (4tfmppy)Pt(dptp) with 6 wt% doped concentration shows superior performances with a maximum EQE of 26.90% with mild efficiency roll-off. This study demonstrates that the ancillary ligand attached with a 4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole group could facilitate charge trapping across the bulk of the device for efficient OLEDs.

Achieving High-Performance Solution-Processed Orange OLEDs with the Phosphorescent Cyclometalated Trinuclear Pt(II) Complex

Cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes can show intense phosphorescence at room temperature. Their emission properties are determined by both the organic ligand and the metal center. Whereas most of the related studies focus on tuning the properties by designing different types of organic ligands, only several reports investigate the key role played by the metal center. To address this issue, phosphorescent Pt(II) complexes with one, two, and three Pt(II) centers are designed and synthesized. With more Pt(II) centers, the cyclometalated multinuclear Pt(II) complexes display red-shifted emissions with increased photoluminescence quantum yields. Most importantly, solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the conventional device structure using the multinuclear Pt(II) complexes as emitters show excellent performance. The controlled device based on the conventional mononuclear Pt(II) complex shows a peak external quantum efficiency, current efficiency, and power efficiency of 6.4%, 14.4 cd A^-1, and 12.1 lm W^-1, respectively. The efficiencies are dramatically improved to 10.5%, 21.4 cd A^-1, and 12.9 lm W^-1 for the OLED based on the dinuclear Pt(II) complex and to 17.0%, 35.4 cd A^-1, and 27.2 lm W^-1 for the OLED based on the trinuclear Pt(II) complex, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, these efficiencies are among the highest ever reported for the multinuclear Pt(II) complex-based OLEDs.

Self-assembly of dinuclear Pd(ii)/Pt(ii) metallacyclic receptors incorporating N-heterocyclic carbene complexes as corners

A series of new Pd(ii)/Pt(ii) metallacycles were self-assembled in water, using bipyridinium-based ligands and kinetically-labile metal centers having chelating N-heterocyclic carbenes.

Triboluminescence and Metal Phosphor for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes: Functional Pt(II) Complexes with Both 2-Pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene and Bipyrazolate Chelates

We report the utilization of both pyrid-2-yl-imidazolylidene and dianionic bipz chelates as constituents in syntheses of a new series of charge-neutral Pt(II) complexes 1-4, among which complex 4 revealed remarkable triboluminescence, i.e., generation of photoemission upon grinding or cracking of the solid sample. The triboluminescence is found to be sensitive to the subtle changes of the associated substituents of pyrid-2-yl-imidazolylidene chelate, as verified by the disappearance of the triboluminescence for complexes 1-3. Alternatively, the well-ordered solid packing of 3, as indicated by the grazing incidence X-ray scattering experiment, serves as an ideal emitter for the fabrication of highly efficient OLEDs, rendering high external quantum efficienciy (25.9%) and luminesce efficiency (90 cd A^-1) at the practical brightness of 100 cd m^-2. The rather low roll-off in efficiency (24.4%, 85 cd A^-1 at high brightness of 1000 cd m^-2) is attributed to the short excited-state lifetime of 3 (∼800 ns) in the solid state, which in turn is associated with the MMLCT transition character.

Low efficiency roll-off and high performance OLEDs employing alkyl group modified iridium(iii) complexes as emitters

Four Ir(iii) dyes employing modified 1,2-diphenyl-1H-benzoimidazole ligands were synthesized. Doped device using tBu-Ir-PI with tert-butyl group as emitter achieves high η_c of 42.0 cd A⁻¹ and η_p of 27.0 lm W⁻¹, respectively.
