Mechanistic Investigation of Inducing Triboluminescence in Lanthanide(III) β-Diketonate Complexes

Ternary Eu3+ crystalline complexes with photoluminescence and triboluminescence for dynamic stress visualization

Investigation of photoluminescence (PL) and fracture-induced triboluminescence (TL) is necessary for the development of both fundamental theories and practical applications in mechanical energy conversion; however, most known PL/TL-emitting materials are confined to inorganic systems. In this study, a novel lanthanide-based crystalline complex (LnCC), Eu(DBM)3DETA was synthesized via the synergistic coordination of Eu3+ with DBM (Dibenzoylmethane) and DETA (Diethylenetriamine) units, leading to the formation of brighter LnCC with bright red emission, high PL quantum yields (57.19 %) and unique TL characteristics. The key to success in obtaining Eu(DBM)3DETA is the utilization of DETA molecule as synergistic ligand, presenting block crystals with higher coordination number of Eu3+ ions via recrystallization. Due to the dense accumulation of cross-linked three-dimensional frameworks through van der Waals interactions, the fracture-induced piezoelectric effect results in charge separation and excitation through the resultant electric field and discharge, triggering a fast TL response of Eu(DBM)3DETA and expanding the possibilities of the quantitative stress sensing. Importantly, amorphous powders can still recover to their original PL and TL emission intensities after recrystallization in cyclic crystal-to-amorphous phase transitions. The unique PL and TL characteristics of Eu(DBM)3DETA provide promising opportunities to display stress visualization differences of electronic signatures under different forces.

Chromic triboluminescence of self-assembled platinum(II) complexes

A series of Pt(II) complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbenes, [Pt(CN)₂(Rim-Mepy)] (Rim-MepyH⁺ = 3-alkyl-1-(4-methyl-(2-pyridinyl))-1H-imidazolium, R = Me, Et, ⁱPr, or ^tBu), exhibits triboluminescence in the visible range from blue to red, as well as the corresponding intense photoluminescence. Remarkably, among the complexes, the ⁱPr-substituted one exhibits chromic triboluminescence behaviour during the process of rubbing and also vapour exposure.

Strategy to Probe the Local Atomic Structure of Luminescent Rare Earth Complexes by X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Spectroscopy Simulation Using a Machine Learning-Based PyFitIt Approach

Rare earth(III) β-diketonates are highly remarkable luminophores in the visible spectral region among the rare earth compounds, owing to the efficient contribution from the 4f-4f intraconfigurational transitions. To get detailed structural insight into the RE³⁺ sites (RE = Eu, Gd, and Sm), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) can be very potent in probing the local chemical environment around the RE³⁺ ion. In this work, a PyFitIt machine learning approach was employed as a new strategy to simulate the Eu, Gd, and Sm L₃-edge XANES and thereby determine the local atomic structure of the luminescence RE³⁺ β-diketonate complexes, [Eu(tta)₃(H₂O)₂], [C₄mim][Eu(dbm)₄], [Gd(tta)₃(H₂O)₂], and [Sm(dbm)₃(phen)] (tta, 3-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate; dbm, dibenzoylmethane; phen, phenanthroline; and C₄mim, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide). Continuous Cauchy wavelet transform validated the PyFitIt calculated XANES by visualizing very efficiently the coordination geometries, composed of O and O/N backscatterers around the RE³⁺ (RE = Eu and Gd) and Sm³⁺ ions, respectively, as a pinkish-red color map in the two-dimensional images of the corresponding complexes. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure fit in Artemis also corroborated the three-dimensional structures generated by PyFitIt XANES simulation for all the compounds. Though, relatively slightly higher bond distance values for the Sm³⁺ complex are due to the higher atomic radius of the Sm³⁺ ion when compared to the Eu³⁺ and Gd³⁺ complexes. Meanwhile, higher Debye-Waller factor (σ²) values for the [C₄mim][Eu(dbm)₄] when compared to the [Eu(tta)₃(H₂O)₂] indicated the structure disorder, owing to the distortion in the local geometry. It is noteworthy that the optical properties, described mainly by the Ω_λ (λ = 2 and 4) 4f-4f intensity parameters, are very sensitive to the local coordination environment around the Eu³⁺ ion. Thus, a close agreement between the experimental and theoretically calculated Ω_λ parameter values confirmed that the PyFitIt calculated square antiprismatic structures are precisely similar to the real structures of the Eu³⁺ complexes.

New luminescent lanthanide tetrakis - complexes NEt4[LnL4] based on dimethyl-N-benzoylamidophosphate

The new lanthanide dimethyl-N-benzoylamidophosphate (HL) based tetrakis-complexes NEt 4 [LnL 4 ] (Ln 3+ = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) are reported. The complexes are characterized by means of NMR, IR, absorption, and luminescent spectroscopy as well as by elemental, X-Ray, and thermal gravimetric analyses. The phenyl groups of the four ligands of the complex anion are directed towards one side, while the methoxy groups are directed in the opposite side, which makes the complexes under consideration structurally similar to calixarenes. The effect of changing the alkali metal counterion to the organic cation NEt 4 + on the structure and properties of the tetrakis-complex [LnL4]- is analyzed. The complexes exhibit bright characteristic for respective lanthanides luminescence. Rather high intensity of the band of 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 transition, observed in the luminescence spectrum of NEt 4 [EuL 4 ], is discussed based on theoretical calculations.

Sensitization of Nd3+ Luminescence by Simultaneous Two-Photon Excitation through a Coordinating Polymethinic Antenna

We have designed and synthesized two new cyaninic Nd³⁺ complexes where the lanthanide emission can be induced from simultaneous two-photon absorption followed by energy migration. These complexes correspond to a molecular design that uses an antenna ligand formed by the functionalization of a heptamethine dye with 5-ol-phenanthroline or 4-phenyl-terpyridine derivatives. These complexes employ the important nonlinear optical properties of symmetric polymethines to sensitize the lanthanide ion. We verified that simultaneous biphotonic excitation indirectly induces the ⁴F_3/2 → ⁴I_11/2 Nd³⁺ emission using femtosecond laser pulses tuned below the first electronic transition of the antenna. The simultaneous two-photon excitation events initially form the nonlinear-active second excited singlet of the polymethine antenna, which rapidly evolves into its first excited singlet. This state in turn induces the formation of the emissive Nd³⁺ states through energy transfer. The role of the first excited singlet of the antenna as the donor state in this process was verified through time resolution of the antenna's fluorescence. These measurements also provided the rates for antenna-lanthanide energy transfer, which indicate that the phenanthroline-type ligand is approximately five times more efficient for energy transfer than the phenyl-terpyridine derivative due to their relative donor-acceptor distances. The simultaneous two-photon excitation of this polymethine antenna allows for high spatial localization of the Nd³⁺excitation events.

Photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence of solid-state zirconocene dichlorides

Spectral-luminescence properties of 23 samples of zirconium complexes were studied. Mechanoluminescence spectra of 10 complexes were obtained. The solid-state component of the mechanoluminescence spectrum, that is the luminescence of the crystal itself, coincided with the photoluminescence spectra of these complexes, which indicated identical emission from the same excited states in mechanoluminescence and photoluminescence, despite the different ways of excitation. The luminescence maximum was red shifted as substituents appeared in the ligand, in particular in the presence of a bridging group connecting π-ligands (ansa-complexes) and also for a substituted bis-indenyl complex rac-Me₂ Si(2-Me-4-Ph-5-OMe-6-Bu^t -Ind)₂ ZrCl₂ ). It was found that mechanical destruction of the rac-isomer of complex Mе₂ С(2-Me-4-Bu^t -C₅ H₂ )₂ ZrCl₂ , unlike that of the meso-isomer, was accompanied by a more than a 10-fold increase in intensity and by a shift in the mechanoluminescence spectrum to longer wavelengths.

Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII enantiomeric pairs showing circularly polarized luminescence, photoluminescence and triboluminescence

Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII tris(β-diketonate) enantiomeric pairs, based on fluorinated β-diketone (Hbtfa) and enantiopure asymmetric N,N'-donor ligands (LR and LS), Λ-Eu(btfa)3LR (R-1-Eu)/Δ-Eu(btfa)3LS (S-1-Eu) and Λ-Sm(btfa)3LR (R-2-Sm)/Δ-Sm(btfa)3LS (S-2-Sm) (btfa- = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pineno-2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized. The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra confirmed their enantiomeric nature. R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm exhibit intense characteristic emissions of EuIII (red) and SmIII (orange-red) ions both in the solid state and in DCM with long lifetimes and high luminescence quantum yields. For example, the overall quantum yields reach up to 61% and 53% along with very high sensitization efficiency values of 82 and 79 for R-1-Eu in the solid state and in DCM, respectively. Notably, the corresponding values are determined to be 6.5% (solid state) and 3.1% (DCM) for R-2-Sm, which are among the highest quantum yields for rare SmIII tris(β-diketonate) luminescent complexes reported to date. Furthermore, R-1-Eu and R-2-Sm show a strong triboluminescence (TL) phenomenon visible with the naked eye in daylight. Moreover, R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. Particularly, the luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) for R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm are larger than those for R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu despite the fact that SmIII complexes usually show poorer emission than EuIII homologues, which is very rare in the reported EuIII and SmIII CPL-active complexes.

Bright photo- and triboluminescence of centrosymmetric Eu(iii) and Tb(iii) complexes with phosphine oxides containing azaheterocycles

Novel mononuclear Eu(iii) and Tb(iii) complexes based on phosphine oxides bearing pyridine, pyrimidine or pyrazine moieties show bright photo- and triboluminescence under ambient conditions.

Composition-Thermometric Properties Correlations in Homodinuclear Eu3+ Luminescent Complexes

A family of homodinuclear Ln³⁺ (Ln³⁺ = Gd³⁺, Eu³⁺) luminescent complexes with the general formula [Ln₂(β-diketonato)₆(N-oxide)_y] has been developed to study the effect of the β-diketonato and N-oxide ligands on their thermometric properties. The investigated complexes are [Ln₂(tta)₆(pyrzMO)₂] (Ln = Eu (1·C₇H₈), Gd (5)), [Ln₂(dbm)₆(pyrzMO)₂] (Ln = Eu (2), Gd (6)), [Ln₂(bta)₆(pyrzMO)₂] (Ln = Eu (3), Gd (7)), [Ln₂(hfac)₆(pyrzMO)₃] (Ln = Eu (4), Gd (8)) (pyrzMO = pyrazine N-oxide, Htta = thenoyltrifluoroacetone, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane, Hbta = benzoyltrifluoroacetone, Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone, C₇H₈ = toluene), and their 4,4′-bipyridine N-oxide (bipyMO) analogues. Europium complexes emit a bright red light under UV radiation at room temperature, whose intensity displays a strong temperature (T) dependence between 223 and 373 K. This remarkable variation is exploited to develop a series of luminescent thermometers by using the integrated intensity of the ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₂ europium transition as the thermometric parameter (Δ). The effect of different β-diketonato and N-oxide ligands is investigated with particular regard to the shape of thermometer calibration (Δ vs T) and relative thermal sensitivity curves: i.e.. the change in Δ per degree of temperature variation usually indicated as S_r (% K^–1). The thermometric properties are determined by the presence of two nonradiative deactivation channels, back energy transfer (BEnT) from Eu³⁺ to the ligand triplet levels and ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT). In the complexes bearing tta and dbm ligands, whose triplet energy is ca. 20000 cm^–1, both deactivation channels are active in the same temperature range, and both contribute to determine the thermometric properties. Conversely, with bta and hfac ligands the response of the europium luminescence to temperature variation is ruled by LMCT channels since the high triplet energy (>21400 cm^–1) makes BEnT ineffective in the investigated temperature range.

A family of homodinuclear Eu³⁺ luminescent complexes with the general formula [Ln₂(β-diketonato)₆(N-oxide)_y] (y = 2, 3) was developed to study the effect of the β-diketonato and N-oxide ligands on the thermometric properties of the complexes. In this way, an effective tuning of the system’s thermometric properties can be achieved.

Triboluminescence of a new family of CuI-NHC complexes in crystalline solid and in amorphous polymer films

Triboluminescent compounds that generate emission of light in response to mechanical stimulus are promising targets in the development of “smart materials” and damage sensors. Among triboluminescent metal complexes, rare-earth europium and terbium complexes are most widely used, while there is no systematic data on more readily available and inexpensive Cu complexes. We report a new family of photoluminescent Cu–NHC complexes that show bright triboluminescence (TL) in the crystal state visible in ambient indoor light under air. Moreover, when these complexes are blended into amorphous polymer films even at small concentrations, TL is easily observed. Observation of TL in polymer films overcomes the limitation of using crystals and opens up possibilities for the development of mechanoresponsive coatings and materials based on inexpensive metals such as Cu. Our results may also have implications for the understanding of the TL effect's origin in polymer films.

Triboluminescence of Centrosymmetric Lanthanide β-Diketonate Complexes with Aggregation-Induced Emission

Triboluminescence (TL) is a form of light emission induced upon mechanical forces on the material. However, our understanding of this phenomenon is still unclear and more examples are therefore needed in order to elucidate its mechanism. In this work, two types of TL complexes, [Eu(pp-dbm-Cl₂)₃phen] and [Eu(mm-dbm-Cl₂)₃phen], which also displays aggregation-induced emission (AIE) were synthesized and investigated for its photo-physical and crystal structural properties. These complexes were crystallized in a centro-symmetric space group P2₁/n, and remarkably, displayed TL upon grinding that may be due to the presence of extensive π···π, C-H···π and C-H···Cl-C interactions in the close molecular packing of its structure. This rare example deviates from the widely accepted mechanism of TL, hence widening the scope of our understanding in the area.
