Abstract
Glycinin basic peptide (GBP) is the basic polypeptide of soybean glycinin that is isolated using cheap and readily available raw materials (soybean meals). GBP can bear high-temperature processing and has good functional properties, such as emulsification and adhesion properties et al. GBP exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. Beyond that, GBP shows enormous application potential to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of food products. This review will systematically provide information on the purification, physicochemical and functional properties of GBP. Moreover, the antimicrobial activities and multi-target antimicrobial mechanism of GBP as well as the applications of GBP in different food products are also reviewed and discussed in detail. This review aims to offer valuable insights for the applications of GBP in the food industry as a promising natural food additive and preservative.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori infection affects over 50% of the world's population and leads to chronic inflammation and gastric disorders, being the main pathogen correlated to gastric cancer development. Increasing antibiotic resistance levels are a major global concern and alternative treatments are needed. Soybean peptides and other compounds might be an alternative in the treatment to avoid, eradicate and/or control symptoms of H. pylori infection. This study aimed to characterize a lunasin-enriched soybean extract (LSE) using proteomics tools and to evaluate its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties against H. pylori infection. By LC-MS/MS analysis, 124 proteins were identified, with 2S albumin (lunasin and large-chain subunits) being the fourth most abundant protein (8.9%). Lunasin consists of 44 amino acid residues and an intramolecular disulfide bond. LSE at a low dose (0.0625 mg/mL) reduced ROS production in both H. pylori-infected and non-infected AGS gastric cells. This led to a significant reduction of 6.71% in the levels of pro-inflammatory interleukin (IL)-8. LSE also showed antibacterial activity against H. pylori, which can be attributed to other soybean proteins and phenolic compounds. Our findings suggest that LSE might be a promising alternative in the management of H. pylori infection and its associated symptoms.

Abstract
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) - cadmium (Cd) complex pollution has been identified as a form of persistent soil pollution in south China, exerting detrimental impacts on the indigenous soil bacterial communities. Hence, it is worthwhile to investigate whether and how bacterial populations alter in response to these pollutants. In this study, Escherichia coli was used as a model bacterium. Results showed that PCP exposure caused bacterial cell membrane permeability changes, intracellular ROS elevation, and DNA fragmentation, and triggered apoptosis-like cell death at low exposure concentration and necrosis at high exposure concentration. Cd exposure caused severe oxidative damage and cell necrosis in the tested bacterial strain. The co-exposure to PCP and Cd elevated the ROS level, stimulated the bacterial caspase activity, and induced DNA fragmentation, thereby leading to an apoptosis-like cell death. In conclusion, PCP-Cd complex pollution can cause bacterial population to decrease through apoptosis-like cell death pathway. However, it is worth noting that the subpopulation survives under the complex pollution stress.

Abstract
Covering: 2015 to 2022Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is responsible for several community and hospital-acquired infections with life-threatening complications such as bacteraemia, endocarditis, meningitis, liver abscess, and spinal cord epidural abscess. In recent decades, the abuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, plants, and fungi and the treatment of nonmicrobial diseases have led to the rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens. The bacterial wall is a complex structure consisting of the cell membrane, peptidoglycan cell wall, and various associated polymers. The enzymes involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis are established antibiotic targets and continue to be a central focus for antibiotic development. Natural products play a vital role in drug discovery and development. Importantly, natural products provide a starting point for active/lead compounds that sometimes need modification based on structural and biological properties to meet the drug criteria. Notably, microorganisms and plant metabolites have contributed as antibiotics for noninfectious diseases. In this study, we have summarized the recent advances in understanding the activity of the drugs or agents of natural origin that directly inhibit the bacterial membrane, membrane components, and membrane biosynthetic enzymes by targeting membrane-embedded proteins. We also discussed the unique aspects of the active mechanisms of established antibiotics or new agents.

Abstract
A recombinant version of the AGAAN antimicrobial peptide (rAGAAN) was cloned, expressed, and purified in this study. Its antibacterial potency and stability in harsh environments were thoroughly investigated. A 15 kDa soluble rAGAAN was effectively expressed in E. coli. The purified rAGAAN exhibited a broad antibacterial spectrum and was efficacious against seven Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of rAGAAN against the growth of M. luteus (TISTR 745) was as low as 60 µg/ml. Membrane permeation assay reveals that the integrity of the bacterial envelope is compromised. In addition, rAGAAN was resistant to temperature shock and maintained a high degree of stability throughout a reasonably extensive pH range. The bactericidal activity of rAGAAN ranged from 36.26 to 79.22% in the presence of pepsin and Bacillus proteases. Lower bile salt concentrations had no significant effect on the function of the peptide, whereas higher concentrations induced E. coli resistance. Additionally, rAGAAN exhibited minimal hemolytic activity against red blood cells. This study indicated that rAGAAN may be produced on a large scale in E. coli and that it had an excellent antibacterial activity and sufficient stability. This first work to express biologically active rAGAAN in E. coli yielded 8.01 mg/ml at 16 °C/150 rpm for 18 h in Luria Bertani (LB) medium supplemented with 1% glucose and induced with 0.5 mM IPTG. It also assesses the interfering factors that influence the activity of the peptide, demonstrating its potential for research and therapy of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

Abstract
The main target of this work is to discover new protein fractions from natural resources with high antibacterial action. The 7S and 11S globulin fractions, as well as the basic subunit (BS), were isolated from lupine seeds (Lupinus termis), chemically characterized, and screened for antibacterial activity against seven pathogenic bacteria. SDS-PAGE revealed molecular weights ranging from 55 to 75 kDa for 7S globulin, 20-37 kD for 11S globulin, and 20 kD for the BS. 11S globulin and the BS migrated faster on Urea-PAGE toward the cathode compared to 7S globulin. FTIR and NMR showed different spectral patterns between the 7S and 11S globulins but similar ones between 11S globulin and the BS. The MICs of the BS were in the range of 0.05-2 μg/mL against Listeria monocytogenes, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria ivanovii, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared to higher values for 11S globulin. The BS surpassed 11S globulin in antibacterial action, while 7S globulin showed no effect. The MICs of 11S globulin and the BS represented only 5% and 2.5% of the specific antibiotic against L. monocytogenes, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated different signs of cellular deformation and decay in the protein-treated bacteria, probably due to interaction with the bacterial cell wall and membranes. 11S globulin and the BS can be nominated as effective food biopreservatives.

Abstract
Soybean functional peptides (SFPs) are obtained via the hydrolysis of soybean protein into polypeptides, oligopeptides, and a small amount of amino acids. They have nutritional value and a variety of functional properties, including regulating blood lipids, lowering blood pressure, anti-diabetes, anti-oxidant, preventing COVID-19, etc. SFPs have potential application prospects in food processing, functional food development, clinical medicine, infant milk powder, special medical formulations, among others. However, bitter peptides containing relatively more hydrophobic amino acids can be formed during the production of SFPs, seriously restricting the application of SFPs. High-quality confirmatory human trials are needed to determine effective doses, potential risks, and mechanisms of action, especially as dietary supplements and special medical formulations. Therefore, the physiological activities and potential risks of soybean polypeptides are summarized, and the existing debitterness technologies and their applicability are reviewed. The technical challenges and research areas to be addressed in optimizing debittering process parameters and improving the applicability of SFPs are discussed, including integrating various technologies to obtain higher quality functional peptides, which will facilitate further exploration of physiological mechanism, metabolic pathway, tolerance, bioavailability, and potential hazards of SFPs. This review can help promote the value of SFPs and the development of the soybean industry.

Abstract
The emergence of the plasmid-mediated colistin resistance mechanism (mcr-1) makes bacterial resistance to colistin increasingly serious. This mcr-1 mediated bacterial resistance to colicin is conferred primarily through modification of lipid A in lipopolysaccharides (LPS). In our previous research, antimicrobial peptide F1 was derived from Tibetan kefir and has been shown to effectively inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), and other pathogenic bacteria. Based on this characteristic of antibacterial peptide F1, we speculated that it could inhibit the growth of the colicin-resistant E. coli SHP45 (mcr-1) and not easily produce drug resistance. Studies have shown that antimicrobial peptide F1 can destroy the liposome structure of the phospholipid bilayer by destroying the inner and outer membranes of bacteria, thereby significantly inhibiting the growth of E. coli SHP45 (mcr-1), but without depending on LPS. The results of this study confirmed our hypothesis, and we anticipate that antimicrobial peptide F1 will become a safe antibacterial agent that can assist in solving the problem of drug resistance caused by colistin.

Abstract
In the past few decades, peptide antibacterial products with unique antibacterial mechanisms have attracted widespread interest. They can effectively reduce the probability of drug resistance of bacteria and are biocompatible, so they possess tremendous development prospects. This review provides recent research and analysis on the basic types of antimicrobial peptides (including poly (amino acid)s, short AMPs, and lipopeptides) and factors to optimize antimicrobial effects. It also summarizes the two most important modes of action of antimicrobial peptides and the latest developments in the application of AMPs, including antimicrobial agent, wound healing, preservative, antibacterial coating and others. Finally, we discuss the remaining challenges to improve the antibacterial peptides and propose prospects in the field.

Abstract
The synergistic antibacterial effects between endolysin Lysqdvp001 and ε-poly-lysine (ε-PL) against Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus) were investigated in this study. Lysqdvp001 combined with ε-PL exhibited a strong antibacterial synergism against V. parahaemolyticus. The combinations of Lysqdvp001 (≥60 U/mL) and ε-PL (≥0.2 mg/mL) dramatically decreased cell density of the bacterial suspensions at both 25 °C and 37 °C. Surface zeta potential increment and membrane hyperpolarization of V. parahaemolyticus were observed after treatment by ε-PL and its combination with Lysqdvp001. More β-lactamase and β-galactosidase were leaked from V. parahaemolyticus with combined treatment of Lysqdvp001 and ε-PL than from the bacteria treated with single Lysqdvp001 or ε-PL. Fluorescence and transmission electron microscope revealed that Lysqdvp001 and ε-PL synergistically induced the damage and morphological destruction of V. parahaemolyticus cells. When applying in Gadus macrocephalus, Penaeus orientalis and oyster, the two antimicrobials' cocktail allowed for 3.75, 4.16 and 2.50 log10CFU/g reductions of V. parahaemolyticus, respectively. Besides, Lysqdvp001 in combination with ε-PL removed approximately 44%-68% of V. parahaemolyticus biofilms on polystyrene, glass and stainless steel surfaces. These results demonstrated that Lysqdvp001 and ε-PL might be used together for controlling V. parahaemolyticus and the bacterial biofilms in food industry.

Abstract
Strategies for the synthesis of indole diketopiperazine alkaloids (indole DKPs) have been described and involve three analogs of indole DKPs. The antimicrobial activity and structure-activity relationship (SAR) of 24 indole DKPs were explored. Compounds 3b and 3c were found to be the most active, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) values in the range of 0.94–3.87 μM (0.39–1.56 μg/mL) against the four tested bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli). Furthermore, compounds 4a and 4b displayed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with MIC values of 1.10–36.9 μM (0.39–12.5 μg/mL) against all tested bacteria and plant pathogenic fungi (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Valsa mali, Alternaria alternata and Alternaria brassicae). According to the in silico study, compounds 3c showed significant binding affinity to the FabH protein from Escherichia coli, which has been identified as the key target enzyme of fatty acid synthesis (FAS) in bacteria. Therefore, these compounds are not only promising new antibacterial agents but also potential FabH inhibitors.

Abstract
3-Carene is an antimicrobial monoterpene that occurs naturally in a variety of plants and has an ambiguous antibacterial mechanism against food-borne germs. The antibacterial effects and action mechanism of 3-carene against Gram-positive Brochothrix thermosphacta ACCC 03870 and Gram-negative Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 13525 were studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination and leakage of alkaline phosphatase (AKP) verified that 3-carene caused more obvious damage to the morphology and wall structure of B. thermosphacta than P. fluorescens. The release of potassium ions and proteins, the reduction in membrane potential (MP), and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) staining further confirmed that the loss of the barrier function of the cell membrane and the leakage of cytoplasmic contents were due to the 3-carene treatment. Furthermore, the disorder of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), pyruvate kinase (PK), and ATP content indicated that 3-carene could lead to metabolic dysfunction and inhibit energy synthesis. In addition, the results from the fluorescence analysis revealed that 3-carene could probably bind to bacterial DNA and affect the conformation and structure of genomic DNA. These results revealed that 3-carene had strong antibacterial activity against B. thermosphacta and P. fluorescens via membrane damage, bacterial metabolic perturbations, and genomic DNA structure disruption, interfering in cellular functions and even causing cell death.

Abstract
The present work was carried out to determine the characteristics and antibacterial activity of 7S and 11S globulins isolated from cowpea seed (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.). The molecular mass of 7S globulin was demonstrated by SDS-PAGE bands to be of about 132, 129 and 95 kDa corresponding the α/, α and β subunits. The molecular mass of 11S globulin was demonstrated by SDS-PAGE bands to be existed between 28 and 52 kDa corresponding the basic and acidic subunits. The minimum inhibitory concentrations MICs of 7S and 11S globulins isolated from cowpea seed were determined against Gram positive bacteria viz: Listeria monocytogenes LMG 10470, Listeria ivanovii FLB 12, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615, and Gram negative bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 43816, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 26853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella ATCC 14028 using disc diffusion assay; they were showed to be in the range 10 to 200 µg/mL. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) examination of the protein-treated bacteria showed the antibacterial action of 11S globulin against S. typhimurium and P. aeruginosa was manifested by signs of cellular deformation, partial and complete lysis of cell components. Adding 11S globulin at both concentrations 50 and 100 µg/g to minced meat showed considerable decreases in bacterial counts of viable bacteria, psychrotrophs and coliforms compared to controls during 15 days storage at 4 °C, reflecting a promising perspective to use such globulin as a meat bio-preservative.
