Abstract
Background: Pure bergamot juice exerts lipid lowering effects in dyslipidemic subjects. It is unknown whether bergamot-based beverages exert similar effects in healthy subjects. Aim: To assess the effects, if any, of a bergamot-based beverage (BBB, bergamot juice ≤25%) on lipid, metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: Forty-five healthy subjects were randomised 1 : 1 to BBB intake (400 mL day-1) (55.5%) or control (44.5%) for 12 weeks. Anthropometric (waist circumference, body mass index (BMI)) and clinical (blood pressure) parameters, blood samples (glucose, glycated haemoglobin, insulinemia, lipid profile, liver and renal function, inflammatory biomarkers) and 24-h urine for the analysis of (poly)phenol metabolites were collected at the baseline and at 12 weeks. Intakes of energy, nutrients and food groups were assessed by a 7-day dietary record. Results: Both groups exhibited a time-related significant decrease in total cholesterol (p = 0.02), fasting plasma glucose (p = 0.016), insulin (p = 0.034), BMI (p < 0.001) and waist circumference (p = 0.04), but with no significant between-arm difference. The urinary profile of metabolites from the BBB-derived (poly)phenols well discriminated the two study groups, documenting good compliance in the intervention arm. Notably, urinary bergamot 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG) -containing flavanones or derived HMG-containing metabolites were not detectable. BBB was well tolerated and no adverse events were recorded. Conclusion: This first randomized controlled trial of BBB consumption in healthy subjects showed no effects of BBB on the cardiometabolic risk profile. BBB consumption is a safe nutritional adjunct in the context of a well balanced diet.

Abstract
Context: Bergamot, mainly produced in the Ionian coastal areas of Southern Italy (Calabria), has been used since 1700 for its balsamic and medicinal properties. Phytochemical profiling has confirmed that bergamot juices are rich in flavonoids, including flavone and flavanone glycosides which are responsible for its beneficial effects.Objective: Recently, it was shown that the combination of natural compounds with conventional treatments improves the efficacy of anticancer therapies. Natural compounds with anticancer properties attack cancerous cells without being toxic to healthy cells. Bergamot can induce cytotoxic and apoptotic effects and prevent cell proliferation in various cancer cells.Methods: In this review, the antiproliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of bergamot are described. Information was compiled from databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using the key words 'bergamot' accompanied by 'inflammation' and, 'cancer' for data published from 2015-2021.Results: In vitro and in vivo studies provided evidence that different forms of bergamot (extract, juice, essential oil, and polyphenolic fraction) can affect several mechanisms that lead to anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects that decrease cell growth, as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.Conclusions: Considering the effects of bergamot and its new formulations, we affirm the importance of its rational use in humans and illustrate how bergamot can be utilized in clinical applications. Numerous studies evaluated the effect of new bergamot formulations that can affect the absorption and, therefore, the final effects by altering the therapeutic profile of bergamot and enhancing the scientific knowledge of bergamot.

Abstract
Several compounds with different physical properties are present in foods, biological components, and environmental samples, and there are cases in which these must be analyzed simultaneously. However, it is difficult to extract compounds with different physical properties from the same sample using a single method. In the present study, we examined the optimal conditions for the QuEChERS extraction of several kinds of compounds from orange juice using design of experiments (DoE) and response surface methodology (RSM) to determine the optimal ratio of organic solvent to sodium chloride. We determined the optimal extraction conditions, which were within the design space, using 100% tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the extraction organic solvent and NaCl:MgSO4 = 75:25 as the salt. The developed LC/MS/MS method using QuEChERS extraction achieved specific detection and precise quantification. Finally, we measured the polyphenols, sterols, and carotenoids in citrus juice using the optimized QuEChERS extraction method before LC/MS/MS analysis. Most of the analytes were quantifiable in orange juice. The optimized method achieved ease of operation, the extraction of analytes from food samples in a short time (within 30 min), minimization of analytical residues, and reliability. The DoE and RSM approach may contribute to better optimization of the extraction conditions for the lowest number of experiments.

Abstract
Fourteen flavonoid compounds were detected in pomelo and grapefruit pulp. The flavonoid profiles in pomelo and grapefruit pulp had varietal difference. Flavonoids of pomelo and grapefruit showed strong cellular antioxidant activity. Flavonoids of pomelo and grapefruit are good inhibitors of pancreatic lipase.
Previous results indicated that the flavonoid profiles might have varietal differences in pomelo, but detailed information is unknown. We previously isolated 4 new flavonoids, cigranoside C, D, E, F, in Citrus grandis Shatianyu pulp. However, their distribution in different pomelo cultivars remains to be explored. Therefore, the flavonoid profiles and in vitro bioactivity of the pulp from 5 pomelo and 1 grapefruit cultivars commonly consumed in China were investigated. Fourteen flavonoids were identified, cigranoside C, D, E were detected in these pomelo and grapefruit. Naringin and cigranoside C were the major flavonoids in grapefruit, Guanximiyu-W, Guanximiyu-R and Liangpingyu, while melitidin and rhoifolin was the predominant flavonoid in Shatianyu and Yuhuanyu, respectively. Pomelo and grapefruit showed strong antioxidant activity, and were potent inhibitors of pancreatic lipase with IC50 values of 11.4–72.6 mg fruit/mL except Shatianyu. Thus, pomelo and grapefruit are natural antioxidants and possess anti-obesity potential.

Abstract
Bergamot citrus (Citrus bergamia Risso et Poiteau), have been used as a strategy to prevent or treat comorbidities associated with metabolic syndrome parameters, such as cardiorenal metabolic syndrome (CRMS). The aim was to test the effect of bergamot leaf extract on CRMS and associated pathophysiological factors in rats fed with a high sugar-fat diet. Animals were divided into two experimental groups with control diet (Control, n = 30) and high sugar-fat diet (HSF, n = 30) for 20 weeks. Once CRMS was detected, animals were redivided to begin the treatment with Bergamot Leaf Extract (BLE) by gavage (50 mg/kg) for 10 weeks: control diet + placebo (Control, n = 09), control diet + BLE (Control + BLE, n = 09), HSF diet + placebo (HSF, n = 09), HSF + BLE (n = 09). Evaluation included nutritional, metabolic and hormonal analysis; and renal and cardiac parameters. HSF groups presented obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance. BLE showed protection against effects on hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance, renal damage, and structural and functional alterations of the heart. Conclusion: Bergamot leaf extract shows potential as a therapeutic to treat CRMS in animals fed with a high sugar-fat diet.

Abstract
Citrus fruits (CF) are highly consumed worldwide, fresh, processed, or prepared as juices and pies. To illustrate the high economic importance of CF, the global production of these commodities in 2021 was around 98 million tons. CF's composition is considered an excellent source of phenolic compounds (PC) as they have a large amount and variety. Since ancient times, PC has been highlighted to promote several benefits related to oxidative stress disorders, such as chronic diseases and cancer. Recent studies suggest that consuming citrus fruits can prevent some of these diseases. However, due to the complexity of citrus matrices, extracting compounds of interest from these types of samples, and identifying and quantifying them effectively, is not a simple task. In this context, several extractive and analytical proposals have been used. This review discusses current research involving CF, focusing mainly on PC extraction and analysis methods, regarding advantages and disadvantages from the perspective of Green Chemistry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Citrus fruits are a rich source of valuable molecules, and their industrial processing produces bagasses, little explored to generate important by-products. These Citrus residues, including seeds and peels, also contain numerous pharmacologically important substances. To reduce the impact of these Citrus by-products, young, harvested fruits could be used as a functional supplemental food while another part is grown until maturity for industrial production. This study therefore aims to valorize rangpur (Citrus limonia) in the first 3 months of its growth by investigating and comparing its monthly chemical profiles using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS) and its anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet activity. RESULTS Extracts obtained from the fruits harvested in November, December, and January, 2017 and 2018 (L221117, L161217, and L160118) showed different UPLC-ESI-MS profiles. Twenty-five of the 26 detected metabolites were identified as cyclitol, pyrrolidine betaine, aryl propanoyl esters, chlorogenic acids, flavonoids, coumarins, and limonoids. Quantification studies indicated an increased concentration of hesperidin from the younger fruits to the older fruits of the series. L160118 reduced nitrogen oxide (NOx), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels more than other extracts. Their activity followed the same trends as the hesperidin concentration in each fruit. In contrast, the most promising antiplatelet activity was observed with the extracts from the two youngest fruits. This suggests combined effects of the chemical components found in these fruits' extracts. CONCLUSION The extracts obtained from these young fruits showed considerable anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet activity. Overall, young rangpur could be used as raw material to produce functional foods without producing any waste. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Centella asiatica is a popular medicinal plant and several phytotherapic products in the market include its extracts as active constituents. A LC-MS guided phytochemical investigation on the commercial C. asiatica leaves extract named Centevita® allowed characterization and quantification of 24 secondary metabolites including 10 polyphenols and 14 ursane- or oleanane-type triterpenoids in the sapogenin or saponin form. This metabolomic analysis, besides confirming that the triterpenoid fraction roughly accounts for 45% of the extract weight, also resulted in the discovery of isoterminoloside, a new triglycoside saponin of the unprecedented 2α,3β,6β,23-tetrahydroxyolean-13(18)-en-28-oic acid (isoterminolic acid). The structure of isoterminoloside was characterized by a detailed ESI-MS and NMR investigation.

Abstract
Optical sensors based on silver triangular nanoplates (AgTNPs) are insufficiently studied as probes for the spectrophotometric determination of biologically active compounds. In the present article, an interaction between label-free AgTNPs and bioflavonoids in the presence of silver(I) ions was assessed to outline the possibilities of AgTNPs as a colorimetric probe for the fast and sensitive determination of bioflavonoids. It is shown that the interaction was accompanied by a bathochromic shift of the local surface plasmon resonance band of nanoparticles and an increase in its intensity. Seven bioflavonoids differing in their structure were tested. The influence of the structure of analytes and the main external factors on the analytical signal is discussed in detail. It was found that the detection limits of bioflavonoids in the selected optimal conditions increased in the series morin < rutin = quercetin < taxifolin and came to 0.9, 1.2, 1.2, and 2.0 μmol L−1, respectively. Chrysin, naringenin, and naringin were found not to affect the spectral characteristics of AgTNPs. The suggested approach was applied for the spectrophotometric determination of flavonoids in pharmaceuticals and onion peel.

Abstract
In this work, a sample of pure and certified bergamot essential oil (BEO) was extensively studied for the first time directly by NMR spectroscopy with the aim of investigating its metabolic composition, quantifying the main components of this complex natural matrix and simultaneously assessing whether the NMR technique is able to highlight possible frauds to which this high-cost product may be subjected. Eleven low molecular weight compounds have been identified by using 1D 1H and 13C-{1H} NMR experiments, 2D homo- and heteronuclear correlation NMR spectra, and 2D 1H DOSY experiments; the most abundant of them, i.e., about 90% of the sample analyzed, has been quantified by employing benzoic acid as an internal standard by 1H NMR spectrum. Moreover, since the commercial fraud of this precious oil is often due to the addition of less expensive oils, we have simulated a possible adulteration through the preparation of BEO samples to which different percentages of orange essential oil (OEO) were added. The results, obtained by combining the 1H NMR spectra collected on the adulterated samples and on pure BEO, with chemometric analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), indicate that it is possible to distinguish the sample of pure BEO from the adulterated ones and also, among them, to differentiate between the degrees of adulteration.

Abstract
Botanicals are natural alternatives to pharmacological therapies that aim at reducing hypercholesterolemia. In this context, despite bergamot being effective in modulating lipid profile, some subjects failed to achieve a satisfactory response to supplementation. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the association of 600 mg of bergamot phytosome® (from Citrus Bergamia Risso) and 100 mg of artichoke leaf standardized dry extract (from Cynara cardunculus L.) can be an alternative in patients with mild hypercholesterolemia who are poor responders to bergamot in a 2-month randomized placebo-controlled trial. Sixty overweight adults were randomized into two groups: 30 were supplemented and 30 received a placebo. The metabolic parameters and DXA body composition were evaluated at the start, after 30 and 60 days. Between the two groups, total and LDL cholesterol in the supplemented group (compared to placebo) showed significant decreases overtime. A significant reduction of waist circumference and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was recorded in the supplemented group (compared to placebo), even in subjects who did not follow a low-calorie diet. In conclusion, the synergism between Citrus Bergamia polyphenols and Cynara cardunculus extracts may be an effective option and may potentially broaden the therapeutic role of botanicals in dyslipidemic patients.

Abstract
Background: Cyclophosphamide (CYP) is a chemotherapy drug widely used in the treatment of several types of cancers and autoimmune disorders. Unfortunately, it causes severe side effects on many organs due to its oxidative stress effect. Objective: The present study aims to tentatively identify the phytochemical constituents of orange fruit (Citrus sinensis) peel extract (OFPE) and elucidate the chemopreventive effects of OFPE on CYP drug induced organ toxicity. Methods: The high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS/MS) technique was used to identify the compounds. Thirty-five male rats were divided into five groups (GP; n = 7): GP1: normal control, GP2: OFPE 0.5 only, GP3: CYP-only, GP4: OFPE 0.25 + CYP, and GP5: OFPE 0.5 + CYP. Results: Twenty-nine compounds of polyphenolic nature, mainly flavonoids, anthocyanidins, phenolic acids and limonoids were characterized by HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Among these compounds, naringin, hesperidin, diosmin, rutin, neohesperidin and limonin were the predominant compounds in the examined extract. Serum cellular markers were found to be decreased significantly upon treatment with OFPE (especially high dose). Also, a significant prophylactic effect against liver, kidney, and heart injuries induced by CYP via decreasing inflammation (serum TNF-α, IL-1β & IL-6) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) was also revealed. Also, an increase in antioxidant levels (serum TAO, and cellular GSH & CAT in tissue homogenates) confirmed the protective efficacy of OFPE against CYP toxicity. Conclusions: The present study reveals some chemopreventive properties and beneficial effects of OFPE on CYP-induced organ toxicity via its antioxidant status and immunoregulatory activities.

Abstract
The study is based on phytochemical profiling and in vitro evaluation of biological effects of phenolic acid derivatives-rich Herniaria fractions, isolated from two rupturewort (Herniaria L.) species, i.e. Herniaria incana Lam. (syn. H. besseri Fisch. ex Hornem) and H. polygama J. Gay (syn. H. odorata). For the first time, the composition of phenolic compounds of these species was extensively evaluated by both LC-HR-QTOF-ESI-MS and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR). LC-MS analyses of H. polygama revealed 72 tentatively identified compounds, while H. incana - 63. Only 8% of the metabolites reported in this work have been previously described for Herniaria spp. Most of the identified specialized metabolites were cinnamic and benzoic acid derivatives. Phenolic fraction of H. incana herb contained flavonoids as well. A multi-step chromatographic separation of phenolic fractions from H. polygama yielded three known cinnamic and one benzoic acid derivates, and from H. incana - 4 known flavonoids and one previously undescribed, i.e. rhamnocitrin-3-O-[3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-(1 → 6'')]-[α-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2'')]-β-glucopyranoside. Antioxidant properties of the examined fractions (1-50 μg/ml) were assessed in human blood plasma under the conditions of peroxynitrite-induced oxidative stress. Measurements of well-known biomarkers such as 3-nitrotyrosine, protein thiol groups, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and the ferric reducing ability of blood plasma revealed the protective effect of Herniaria fractions against oxidative damage to blood plasma components. Furthermore, the examined fractions effectively ameliorated the inflammatory response of the concanavalin A-stimulated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Additionally, cellular safety of the fractions was confirmed in PBMCs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The structural annotation of target relies on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) information resulting in dubious identities in most cases. The accurate annotation of isomeric structures is still challenging to be confirmed with significant bottleneck. OBJECTIVE This study focused on the improvement of structural annotation of candidate structures via four pairs of isomeric flavanone-7-O-diglucosides and their basic flavanone aglycones commonly detected in citrus products. METHOD An integrated liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) approach merging retention time, accurate mass, tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) information (diagnostic ions), ion ratio at selected collision energy was established successfully. RESULTS Feasibility of this approach was validated confidently in biological samples with relative standard deviation (RSD) of ion ratio range from 3.91 to 12.28%. Differences of fragmentation patterns of citrus flavanones were illustrated reasonably. MS/MS fragments of (S)-hesperetin and (S)-isosakuranetin were complicated and showed typical radical ion [1,2 A - H]•- (m/z 164) in negative ESI mode due to the methoxyl group on B-ring, which showed huge difference with (R)-hesperetin and (R)-isosakuranetin. CONCLUSION This study integrated multiple levels to boost the confidence of structural annotation relied on LC-HRMS, and provided important values in practice for precise identification of citrus flavanones in biological matrices.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the Western world. In order to safeguard the structure and the functionality of the myocardium, it is extremely important to adequately support the cardiomyocytes. Two cellular organelles of cardiomyocytes are essential for cell survival and to ensure proper functioning of the myocardium: mitochondria and the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Mitochondria are responsible for the energy metabolism of the myocardium, and regulate the processes that can lead to cell death. The sarcoplasmic reticulum preserves the physiological concentration of the calcium ion, and triggers processes to protect the structural and functional integrity of the proteins. The alterations of these organelles can damage myocardial functioning. A proper nutritional balance regarding the intake of macronutrients and micronutrients leads to a significant improvement in the symptoms and consequences of heart disease. In particular, the Mediterranean diet, characterized by a high consumption of plant-based foods, small quantities of red meat, and high quantities of olive oil, reduces and improves the pathological condition of patients with heart failure. In addition, nutritional support and nutraceutical supplementation in patients who develop heart failure can contribute to the protection of the failing myocardium. Since polyphenols have numerous beneficial properties, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, this review gathers what is known about the beneficial effects of polyphenol-rich bergamot fruit on the cardiovascular system. In particular, the role of bergamot polyphenols in mitochondrial and sarcoplasmic dysfunctions in diabetic cardiomyopathy is reported.

Abstract
The Citrus genus is a good source of dietary flavonoids, which have many health benefits. As a representative citrus fruit, the flavonoids composition in Shatianyu (Citrus grandis L. Osbeck) pulp remains to be investigated. In the present study, 11 flavonoids were isolated and identified from Shatianyu pulp flavonoid extracts (SPFEs). Among them, 4 flavonoids were previously undescribed and 2 flavonoids were firstly isolated from pummelo. The cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of isolated compounds were evaluated. Naringin and rhoifolin showed the highest ORAC activity, and the presence of a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl or a 4'-glucose decreased the ORAC activity of flavonoids. The contribution of isolated flavonoids to the holistic antioxidant activity of SPFEs was determined by an online knockout method. Melitidin, bergamjuicin and naringin contributed most to ORAC activity, while bergamjuicin, melitidin and apigenin-4'-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-7-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[6″-O-(3- hydroxy-3-methylgltaryl)]-β-d-glucopyranoside contributed most to CAA activity.

Abstract
Phytochemical analysis of the Iranian plant Achillea wilhelmsii led to the isolation of 17 pure secondary metabolites belonging to the classes of sesquiterpenoids and phenolics. Two of these compounds, named wilhemsin (7) and wilhelmsolide (9), are new sesquiterpenoids, and the first shows undescribed structural features. Their structures were elucidated through extensive spectroscopic analysis, mainly based on 1D and 2D NMR, and chemical derivatization. Starting from plant traditional use and previous reports on the activity of the plant extracts, all the pure compounds were evaluated on endpoints related to the treatment of metabolic syndrome. The sesquiterpene hanphyllin (8) showed a selective cholesterol-lowering activity (−12.7% at 30 µM), santoflavone (13) stimulated glucose uptake via the GLUT transporter (+16.2% at 30 µM), while the trimethoxylated flavone salvigenin (14) showed a dual activity in decreasing lipid levels (−22.5% palmitic acid biosynthesis at 30 µM) and stimulating mitochondrial functionality (+15.4% at 30 µM). This study further confirms that, in addition to the antioxidants vitexin, isovitexin, and isoschaftoside, A. wilhelmsii extracts contain molecules that can act at different levels on the metabolic syndrome symptoms.

Abstract
The aim of the study is to compare the qualitative and semi-quantitative profile of the polyphenol fraction purified from the leaf (BLPF) and fruit (BFPF) of bergamot (Citrus bergamia), and to evaluate their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. The analytical qualitative profile was carried out by LC-ESI/MS using three different approaches: targeted (searching analytes already reported in bergamot extract), semi-targeted (a selective search of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutarate [HMG] derivatives involved in the cholesterol reducing activity of BPF) and untargeted. A total number of 108 compounds were identified by using the three approaches, 100 of which are present in both the extracts thus demonstrating a good qualitative overlapping of polyphenols between the two extracts. The antioxidant activity was higher for BLPF in respect to BFPF but when normalized in respect to the polyphenol content they were almost overlapping. Both the extracts were found to dose dependently inhibit cell inflammation stimulated with IL-1α. In conclusion, the comparison of the qualitative and quantitative profile of polyphenols as well as of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of bergamot leaf and fruit well indicates that leaf is a valid source of bergamot polyphenol extraction and an even richer source of polyphenol in respect to the fruit.

Abstract
Bergamot has been traditionally used for the relief of diseases related to oxidative stress. Our aim was to investigate the effect of bergamot phytosome on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and on metabolic profile, in overweight and obese subjects with mild hypercholesterolemia. A total of 64 participants were randomized into two groups for 12 weeks: a supplemented group (33 individuals, BMI 27 ± 3 kg/m2 receiving 500 mg of bergamot phytosome, two daily tablets) and placebo group (31 subjects, BMI 28 ± 3 kg/m2, two daily tablets). As to the within differences, the parameters of VAT, total and LDL‐cholesterol were significantly decreased in the bergamot phytosome group, but not in the placebo group. As to between‐group differences, a statistically significant interaction between time and group, that is, the change in score over time differs between the two groups was observed 30 days after supplementation for VAT (p‐value = .005), total cholesterol (p‐value <.0002), and LDL (p = .004) in respect to placebo. The other parameters (glucose, insulin, Homeostasis Model Assessment, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fat free mass, fat mass) were not significant. In conclusion, this clinical study gives evidence that bergamot phytosome provides beneficial effects, such as decrease of VAT and modulation of metabolic alterations, after just 30 days of supplementation, resulting a very promising protection of cardiovascular health.

Abstract
The present study describes the peculiar phytochemical characteristics of bergamots cultivated in distinct islands of the Ionian Sea. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) supported by 1 and 2D NMR spectroscopy was used for unambiguous metabolic profiling of albedo, flavedo and juice samples. Profile differences were determined using a multi-analytical clustering approach based on high-performance thin-layer chromatography fingerprints and UHPLC-HRMS data. Finally, a validated HPLC method offering good precision (0.12-0.94%) and accuracy (95.25-103.93%) was proposed for the quantification of the major flavanones. A total of 37 secondary metabolites were characterized belonging to flavonoids, limonoids and coumarins. Their distribution was tissue-dependent and varied significantly from bergamots of other geographical locations. Surprisingly, neoeriocitrin was the major flavanone, reaching 1.69 ± 0.05 g/L in the juice and 5.24 ± 0.12 mg/g in albedo. This is the highest reported amount among Citrus species, rendering Ionian bergamots a promising candidate for novel functional products.

Abstract
The citrus herbs have proved their important medicinal and nutritional values as medicine-food dual-purpose herbs, functional foods, or medical herbs in China. In this study, phytochemicals and antioxidant activity among ten typical citrus herbs (ethanol extracts) were investigated comprehensively. The major ingredients and their contents were analyzed by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the differences of typical fragment ions between flavanone-7-O-rutinoside(s) and flavanone-7-O-neohesperidoside(s) were discriminated properly in negative electrospray ionization mode. Total polyphenols, total flavonoids, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid), and ferric reducing antioxidant power tests were performed, which indicated their beneficial values and antioxidant effects. The medicine-food dual-purpose herbs including Chenpi, Juluo, Daidaihua, Huajuhong, Xiangyuan, and Foshou exhibited antioxidant capacities significantly by decreasing intracellular reactive oxygen species intensity (P < 0.01), enhancing superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities (P < 0.01) in H2 O2 -induced RIN-m5F cells. Moreover, the functional foods Zhishi, Zhiqiao, and Qingpi showed moderate antioxidant bioactivity, while the medical herb Juhe showed weak antioxidant bioactivity, which were consistent with the multivariate analysis of their major flavonoids. The study provided a new sight for the chemical differentiation and practical application of citrus herbs as medicine-food dual-purpose herbs, functional foods, or medical herbs.
