Abstract
Propylene oxide, the first chiral molecule recently detected in the interstellar medium, has once again raised the question whether biomolecular chirality might have cosmic origins. However, accurate chiroptical properties of propylene oxide in the ultraviolet spectral range necessary to suggest possible asymmetric synthetic routes in the gas phase are scarce. Here, we report on the first experimental measurements of the anisotropy spectra of gas-phase propylene oxide in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral range. Our experimental results provide novel insights into the handedness of interstellar circular polarization at the dawn of molecular evolution of our star- and planet-forming region. Besides the fundamental importance of this new investigation for understanding the origin and evolution of homochirality on Earth, our high-resolution experimental electronic circular dichroism data will inspire new efforts in quantum computational spectroscopy.

Abstract
Combining Raman scattering and Raman optical activity (ROA) with computer simulations reveals fine structural and physicochemical properties of chiral molecules. Traditionally, the region of interest comprised fundamental transitions within 200-1800 cm-1. Only recently, nonfundamental bands could be observed as well. However, theoretical tools able to match the observed spectral features and thus assist their assignment are rather scarce. In this work, we present an accurate and simple protocol based on a three-quanta anharmonic perturbative approach that is fully fit to interpret the observed signals of methyloxirane within 150-4500 cm-1. An unprecedented agreement even for the low-intensity combination and overtone transitions has been achieved, showing that anharmonic Raman and ROA spectroscopies can be valuable tools to understand vibrations of chiral molecules or to calibrate computational models.

Abstract
An understanding of the mechanism of formation of small clusters would help to identify efficient routes to their synthesis. Here, we apply density functional theory (DFT) to study the free energies and structure of ultra-small silver clusters, and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to calculate their UV-Vis spectra and provide a better understanding of the intermediate steps in cluster formation in the gas phase and solution. Our calculations of the optical properties of neutral and cationic clusters confirm the presence of charged and uncharged intermediates observed in pulse radiolysis experiments during the early stages of the growth of silver clusters. The free energies of formation of hydrated clusters extracted from DFT calculations reveal the greater thermodynamic stability of cationic clusters compared to the corresponding neutral clusters of the same composition. This is consistent with the predominance of kinetically stable cationic clusters observed in pulse radiolysis experiments. Our DFT and TDDFT calculations clarify the effects of ligand, hydration, and oxidation states on the structure, stability, and optical properties of silver clusters that elucidate the mechanism of silver cluster formation in solution and the gas phase.

Abstract
We present a detailed computational study of the UV/Vis spectra of four relevant flavonoids in aqueous solution, namely luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin. The absorption spectra are simulated by exploiting a fully polarizable quantum mechanical (QM)/molecular mechanics (MM) model, based on the fluctuating charge (FQ) force field. Such a model is coupled with configurational sampling obtained by performing classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated QM/FQ spectra are compared with the experiments. We show that an accurate reproduction of the UV/Vis spectra of the selected flavonoids can be obtained by appropriately taking into account the role of configurational sampling, polarization, and hydrogen bonding interactions.

Abstract
The VUV absorption spectrum of fenchone is re-examined using synchrotron radiation Fourier transform spectrometry, revealing new vibrational structure. Picosecond laser (2+1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy complements this, providing an alternative view of the 3spd Rydberg excitation region. These spectra display broadly similar appearance, with minor differences that are largely explained by referring to calculated one- and two-photon electronic excitation cross-sections. Both show good agreement with Franck-Condon simulations of the relevant vibrational structures. Parent ion REMPI ionization yields with both femtosecond and picosecond excitation laser pulses are studied as a function of laser polarization and intensity, the latter providing insight into the relative two-photon excitation and one-photon ionization rates. The experimental circular-linear dichroism observed in the parent ion yields varies strongly between the 3s and 3p Rydberg states, in good overall agreement with the calculated two-photon excitation circular-linear dichroism, while corroborating other evidence that the 3pz sub-state plays no more than a very minor role in the (2+1) REMPI spectrum. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are recorded with picosecond pulse duration (2+1) REMPI at selected intermediate vibrational excitations. The 3s intermediate state displays a very strong Δv=0 propensity on ionization, but the 3p intermediate evidences more complex vibronic dynamics, and we infer some 3p→3s internal conversion prior to ionization.

Abstract
Chiroptical properties and spectroscopies are valuable tools to study chiral molecules and assign absolute configurations. The spectra that result from chiroptical measurements may be very rich and complex, and hide much of their information content. For this reason, the interplay between experiments and calculations is especially useful, provided that all relevant physico-chemical interactions that are present in the experimental sample are accurately modelled. The inherent difficulty associated to the calculation of chiral signals of systems in aqueous solutions requires the development of specific tools, able to account for the peculiarities of water-solute interactions, and especially its ability to form hydrogen bonds. In this perspective we discuss a multiscale approach, which we have developed and challenged to model the most used chiroptical techniques.

Abstract
Over the last decade, molecules capable of emitting circularly polarized light have attracted growing attention for potential technological and biological applications. The efficiency of such devices depend on multiple parameters, in particular the magnitude and wavelength of the peak of emitted light, and also on the dissymmetry factor for chiral applications. In light of these considerations, molecular systems with tunable optical properties, preferably in the visible spectral region, are particularly appealing. This is the case of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, which exhibit large molecular absorption coefficients, have high fluorescence yields, are very stable, both thermally and photochemically, and can be easily functionalized. The latter property has been extensively exploited in the literature to produce chromophores with a wide range of optical properties. Nevertheless, only a few chiral BODIPYs have been synthetized and investigated so far. Using a recently reported axially chiral BODIPY derivative where an axially chiral BINOL unit has been attached to the chromophore unit, we present a comprehensive computational protocol to predict and interpret the one-photon absorption and emission spectra, together with their chiroptical counterparts. From the physico-chemical properties of this molecule, it will be possible to understand the origin of the circularly polarized luminescence better, thus helping to fine-tune the properties of interest. The sensitivity of such processes require accurate results, which can be achieved through a proper account of the vibrational structure in optical spectra. Methodologies to compute vibrationally-resolved electronic spectra can now be applied on relatively large chromophores, such as BODIPYs, but require more extensive computational protocols. For this reason, particular attention is paid in the description of the different steps of the protocol, and the potential pitfalls. Finally, we show how, by means of appropriate tools and approaches, data from intermediate steps of the simulation of the final spectra can be used to obtain further insights into the properties of the molecular system under investigation and the origin of the visible bands.

Abstract
Oligo(phenylethynyl)benzenes are a family of compounds that exhibit a rich photochemistry changing dramatically with different orientation of a phenyl group in the molecule. Quantum-chemical calculations have been performed to investigate different members of this family of compounds and compared to previous experimental and theoretical studies. 1,4-Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) has different optical properties than its smaller relative diphenylacetylene; however, upon twisting an outer phenyl ring of BPEB, its photochemistry becomes very similar. Fluorine substituents at the central benzene ring are shown to have only small effects on the optical properties of BPEB.

Abstract
In order to study Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method is extended to compute electronic couplings between local excitations via the excited state transition density model, enabling efficient calculations of nonlocal excitations in a large molecular system and overcoming the previous limitation of being able to compute only local excitations. The results of these simple but accurate models are validated against full quantum calculations without fragmentation. The developed method is applied to a very important photosynthetic pigment-protein complex, the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex (FMOc), that is responsible for the energy transfer from a chlorosome to the reaction center in the green sulfur bacteria. Absorption and circular dichroism spectra of FMOc are simulated, and the role of the molecular environment on the excitations is revealed.

Abstract
In this work, we extend the theoretical framework recently developed for the simulation of resonance Raman (RR) spectra of medium-to-large sized systems to its chiral counterpart, namely, resonance Raman optical activity (RROA). The theory is based on a time-dependent (TD) formulation, with the transition tensors obtained as half-Fourier transforms of the appropriate cross-correlation functions. The implementation has been kept as general as possible, supporting adiabatic and vertical models for the PES representation, both in Cartesian and internal coordinates, with the possible inclusion of Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects. Thanks to the integration of this TD-RROA procedure within a general-purpose quantum-chemistry program, both solvation and leading anharmonicity effects can be included in an effective way. The implementation is validated on one of the smallest chiral molecule (methyloxirane). Practical applications are illustrated with three medium-size organic molecules (naproxen-OCD3, quinidine and 2-Br-hexahelicene), whose simulated spectra are compared to the corresponding experimental data.

Abstract
A combination of experimental and quantum mechanical investigations is applied to the study of the optical features of 4,4'-bis(2-benzoxazolyl)stilbene (BBS) dissolved in solution or in a poly(l-lactic acid) (PLA) thermoplastic matrix at different concentrations. The experimental analyses allow the characterization of BBS solutions and dispersions in terms of absorption and emission features, along with the collection of some key parameters such as fluorescence quantum yield, anisotropy and lifetime, while the computational approach gives a detailed description of the photophysical behavior of BBS in the different environments. For the 10-5 M BBS solution, the fluorescence spectra show the expected peaks at 425 and 455 nm of the non-interacting BBS molecules with a single fluorescence lifetime of 0.85 ns without revealing any aggregation phenomena, prevented by the short lifetime and fast diffusion rate of the monomer. Moreover, the calculated spectra are in excellent agreement with the experiments, thus showing the reliability of the computational approach. In time-resolved emission experiments (TRES) on more concentrated solutions (10-4 M) and on BBS crystals, the presence of an excimer is revealed by the appearance of a broad peak around 540 nm, followed by the disappearance of the two main peaks at 460 nm on a time scale of about 10 ns. The computational analysis attributes this behavior to the formation of aggregates of different geometries. The BBS dispersions in PLA reveal the presence of different BBS architectures depending on the fluorophore content. Even at low concentrations, BBS is mainly dispersed as a monomer in the matrix, spheroid aggregates of about 800-900 nm in diameter are also present and the relevant fluorescence spectra arise from the combination of monomer and aggregate contributions. At higher concentrations, BBS starts forming crystals of a peculiar helicoidal shape, with a diameter of about 2 μm, variable length up to several hundreds of μm and emission spectra similar to those of isolated BBS crystals.

Abstract
Coordination polymers (CPs) with bismuth(iii) as a connectivity centre have been prepared from BiX3 (X = Cl-I) and 4,4'-bipyridine (bipy) in order to implement Bi-based luminescence. The products were obtained via different synthetic routes such as solution chemistry, melt syntheses or mechanochemical reactions. Five neutral and anionic 1D-CPs are presented that show a chemical parallel to trivalent lanthanides forming isostructural or closely related 1D-CPs, of which five additional compounds are described. Bi3+ proves to be a versatile cation for luminescence resulting from energy transfer processes between a metal and a ligand in the presented CPs. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to investigate Bi3+-participation in the luminescence processes. The calculated results allow an assignment of the bright transitions composed of mainly metal-to-ligand-charge transfer (MLCT) character. These results show that Bi3+ can form strongly luminescent coordination compounds with N-donor ligands.

Abstract
The two enantiomers of 2,2'-bioxirane were synthesized, and their chiroptical properties were thoroughly investigated in various solvents by polarimetry, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), and Raman optical activity (ROA). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level revealed the presence of three conformers (G+ , G- , and cis) with Gibbs populations of 51, 44, and 5% for the isolated molecule, respectively. The population ratios of the two main conformers were modified for solvents exhibiting higher dielectric constants (G- form decreases whereas G+ form increases). The behavior of the specific optical rotation values with the different solvents was correctly reproduced by time-dependent DFT calculations using the polarizable continuum model (PCM), except for the benzene for which explicit solvent model should be necessary. Finally, VCD and ROA spectra were perfectly reproduced by the DFT/PCM calculations for the Boltzmann-averaged G+ and G- conformers.

Abstract
A new synchrotron-based study of the photoelectron spectrum (PES) of difluoromethane is interpreted by an ab initio analysis of the ionic states, which includes Franck-Condon (FC) factors. Double differentiation of the spectrum leads to significant spectral sharpening; the vibrational structure observed is now measured with greater accuracy than in previous studies. Several electronic structure methods are used, including equation of motion coupled cluster calculations with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD), its ionization potential variant EOM-IP-CCSD, 4th order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP4SDQ) configuration interaction (CI), and complete active space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) methods. The adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) confirm the assignments as band I, one state 12B1 (12.671 eV); band II, three states, 12B2 (14.259) < 12A1 (15.030) < 12A2 (15.478 eV); and band III, three states, 22B2 (18.055) < 22A1 (18.257) < 22B1 (18.808 eV). The three ionizations in each of the bands II and III lead to selective line broadening of the PES structure, which is attributed to vibronic overlap. The apparent lack of a vibrational structure attributable to both the 12A1 and 22A1 states in the PES arises from line broadening with the preceding states 12B2 and 22B2, respectively. Although these 2A1 states clearly overlap with their adjacent higher IE, some vibrational structure is observed on the higher IE. The effects of vibronic coupling are evident since the observed structure does not fit closely with the calculated Born-Oppenheimer FC profiles. Correlation of the lowest group of four AIEs in the PES of other members of the CH2X2 group, where X = F, Cl, Br, and I, clearly indicate these effects are more general.

Abstract
The ground state geometries and vibrational frequencies as well as the excitation energies and excited state gradients of the S1(nπ*) and S2(ππ*) states of trans- and cis-azobenzene are investigated by several DFT methods, namely B3LYP, PBE, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97X. Excited state properties and in particular gradients are also assessed using the wave function based methods EOM-CCSD and RASPT2/RASSCF. Comparison with experimental data shows that the B3LYP functional gives the most accurate results for the ground state geometry and vibrational frequencies. The analysis of the vertical excitation energies reveals that the RASPT2 approach provides the most accurate excitation energies with deviations of the order of 0.1 eV. Among the TDDFT methods, the CAM-B3LYP functional shows the best performance on the excitation energies. By assessing the excited state gradients with respect to the reference RASPT2 data, the most accurate gradients are obtained with B3LYP, whereas other functionals as well as the EOM-CCSD and RASSCF calculations give less consistent results. Overall, despite the tendency of B3LYP to underestimate the excitation energies, this functional provides the most balanced description of both ground and excited state properties for both isomers of azobenzene in the Franck-Condon region.

Abstract
We propose a methodology, based on the combination of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations with a fully polarizable Quantum Mechanical (QM)/Molecular Mechanics (MM)/Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) Hamiltonian, to calculate Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) spectra of chiral systems in aqueous solution. Polarization effects are included in the MM force field by exploiting an approach based on Fluctuating Charges (FQ). By performing the MD, the description of the solvating environment is enriched by taking into account the dynamical aspects of the solute-solvent interactions. On the other hand, the QM/FQ/PCM calculation of the VCD spectrum ensures an accurate description of the electronic density of the solute and a proper account for the specific interactions in solution. The application of our approach to (R)-methyloxirane and (l)-alanine in aqueous solution gives calculated spectra in remarkable agreement with their experimental counterparts and a substantial improvement with respect to the same spectra calculated with the PCM.
