Access to Benzocyclic Boronates via Light-Promoted Intramolecular Arylborylation of Alkenes

Discovery and Development of an Aerobic Radical Hydroxyarylation Reaction Using Aryl Halides, Olefins, and O2

Herein, we report the development of a radical hydroxyarylation reaction through the coupling of an aryl radical, an olefin, and O2. Photoredox activation of a silyl radical halogen atom abstractor enables mild aryl radical generation and reactivity in 5-exo, 6-exo, and dearomative cyclizations to synthesize a variety of hydroxylated semisaturated fused ring systems. Expansion of the substrate scope to include aryl bromide starting materials reveals the crucial role of iodide in the catalytic cycle.

Three-component cascade carbopalladation/Heck cyclization/borylation: facile access to boryl-functionalized indenes

A mild Pd-catalyzed three-component cascade cyclization functionalization of o-iodostyrenes, internal alkynes and boron reagents is presented. The transformation is driven by a controlled reaction sequence of intermolecular carbopalladation, intramolecular Heck-type cyclization, and a borylation process to give versatile boryl-functionalized indene skeletons in a selective fashion. Significantly, (Bpin)2, (Bneop)2 and CH2(Bpin)2 as boron sources are all tolerated. Additionally, the synthetic utility of this approach is demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis and synthetic transformations.

Generation and Application of Aryl Radicals Under Photoinduced Conditions

Photoinduced aryl radical generation is a powerful strategy in organic synthesis that facilitates the formation of diverse carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. The synthetic applications of photoinduced aryl radical formation in the synthesis of complex organic compounds, including natural products, physiologically significant molecules, and functional materials, have received immense attention. An overview of current developments in photoinduced aryl radical production methods and their uses in organic synthesis is given in this article. A generalized idea of how to choose the reagents and approach for the generation of aryl radicals is described, along with photoinduced techniques and associated mechanistic insights. Overall, this article offers a critical assessment of the mechanistic results as well as the selection of reaction parameters for specific reagents in the context of radical cascades, cross-coupling reactions, aryl radical functionalization, and selective C-H functionalization of aryl substrates.

Radical Cyclization-Initiated Difunctionalization Reactions of Alkenes and Alkynes

Radical reactions are powerful in the synthesis of diverse molecular scaffolds bearing functional groups. In previous review articles, we have presented 1,2-difunctionalizations, remote 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6- and 1,7-difunctionalizations, and addition followed by cyclization reactions. Presented in this paper is radical cyclization followed by the second functionalization reaction. The second functionalization could be realized by atom transfer reactions, radical or transition metal-assisted coupling reactions, and reactions with neutral molecules, cationic and anionic species.

Radical N2-Retention Cyclizations of Aryl Diazoniums: Access to 7/8/9-Membered Heterocycles

We report herein a modular approach to synthesizing diverse functionalized 7/8/9-membered poly-N-containing heterocycles via oxidative radical N2-retention cyclizations of allylic aryl diazonium salts using CF3SO2Na as a CF3 radical source. A range of trifluoromethylated benzotriazepines, benzotriazocines, and benzotriazonines were obtained in moderate to good yields. This transition-metal-free protocol demonstrates atom economy, safe conditions, broad functional group tolerance, and availability of readily accessible reagents.
