Vibrational Structure in Magnetic Circular Dichroism Spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Experimental and theoretical aspects of magnetic circular dichroism and magnetic circularly polarized luminescence in the UV, visible and IR ranges: A review

A historical sketch of the MCD (magnetic circular dichroism) spectroscopy is reported in its experimental and theoretical aspects. MCPL (magnetic circularly polarized luminescence) is also considered. The main studies are presented encompassing porphyrinoid systems, aggregates and materials, as well as simple organic molecules useful for the advancement of the interpretation. The MCD of chiral systems is discussed with special attention to new studies of natural products with potential pharmaceutical valence, including Amaryllidaceae alkaloids and related isocarbostyrils. Finally, the vibrational form of MCD, called MVCD, which is recorded in the IR part of the spectrum is also discussed. A final brief note on perspectives is given.

Efficient Protocol for Computing MCD Spectra in a Broad Frequency Range Combining Resonant and Damped CC2 Quadratic Response Theory

Coupled cluster response theory offers a path to high-accuracy calculations of spectroscopic properties, such as magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). However, divergence or slow convergence issues are often encountered for electronic transitions in high-energy regions with a high density of states. This is here addressed for MCD by an implementation of damped quadratic response theory for resolution-of-identity coupled cluster singles-and-approximate-doubles (RI-CC2), along with an implementation of the MCD A term from resonant response theory. Combined, damped and resonant response theory calculations provide an efficient strategy to obtain MCD spectra over a broad frequency range and for systems that include highly symmetric molecules with degenerate excited states. The protocol is illustrated by application to zinc tetrabenzoporphyrin in the energy region of 2-8 eV and comparison to experimental data. Timings are reported for the resonant and damped approaches, showing that a greater part of the calculation time is consumed by the construction of the building blocks for the final MCD ellipticity. A recommendation on how to use the procedure is outlined.

Probing Through-Bond and Through-Space Interactions in Singlet Fission-Based Pentacene Dimers

Interchromophoric interactions such as Coulombic coupling and exchange interactions are crucial to the functional properties of numerous π-conjugated systems. Here, we use magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy to investigate interchromophoric interactions in singlet fission relevant pentacene dimers. Using a simple analytical model, we outline a general relationship between the geometry of pentacene dimers and their calculated MCD response. We analyze experimental MCD spectra of different covalently bridged pentacene dimers to reveal how the molecular structure of the "bridge" affects the magnitude of through-space Coulombic and through-bond exchange interactions in the system. Our results show that through-bond interactions are significant in dimers with conjugated molecules as bridging units and these interactions promote the overall electronic coupling in the system. Our generalized approach paves the way for the application of MCD in investigating interchromophoric interactions across a range of π-conjugated systems.

Sign dependence of MCPL spectra on type and position of substituent groups of pyrene and phenanthrene derivatives

Diamagnetic achiral pyrene and phenanthrene derivatives substituted with electron-donating hydroxyl/methoxy groups and electron-withdrawing carboxylic acid groups exhibited clear magnetic circularly polarised luminescence (MCPL) spectra at 360-460 nm in dilute solvents upon the application of N-up and S-up Faraday geometries under an external magnetic field of 1.6 T. Their MCPL signs were also susceptible upon application of the same Faraday geometry.

Natural and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of nucleosides: effect of the dynamics and environment

Chiroptical spectroscopic methods are excellent tools to study structure and interactions of biomolecules. However, their sensitivity to different structural aspects varies. To understand the dependence of absorption, electronic and magnetic circular dichroism (ECD, MCD) intensities on the structure, dynamics and environment, we measured and simulated spectra of nucleosides and other nucleic acid model components. The conformation space was explored by molecular dynamics (MD), the electronic spectra were generated using time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The sum over state (SOS) method was employed for MCD. The results show that accounting for the dynamics is crucial for reproduction of the experiment. While unpolarized absorption spectroscopy is relatively indifferent, ECD reflects the conformation and geometry dispersion more. MCD spectra provide variable response dependent on the wavelength and structural change. In general, MCD samples the structure more locally than ECD. Simple computational tests suggest that the optical spectroscopies coupled with the computational tools provide useful information about nucleic acid components, including base pairing and stacking.

Origins of Optical Activity in an Oxo-Helicene: Experimental and Computational Studies

Helicenes are known to provide extremely strong optical activity. Prediction of the properties of helicenes may facilitate their design and synthesis for analytical or materials sciences. On a model 7,12,17-trioxa[11]helicene molecule, experimental results from multiple spectroscopic techniques are analyzed on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) simulations to test computational methodology and analyze the origins of chirality. Infrared (IR), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and Raman optical activity (ROA, computations only) spectra are compared. Large dissymmetry factors are predicted both for vibrational (ROA/Raman ∼ VCD/IR ∼ 10^-3) and electronic (ECD/Abs ∼10^-2) optical activity, which could be verified experimentally except for ROA. Largest VCD signals come from a strong vibrational coupling of the C-H in-plane and out-of-plane bending modes in stacked helicene rings. The sum-over-states (SOS) approach appeared convenient for simulation of MCD spectra. Our results demonstrated that selected computational methods can be successfully used for reliable modeling of spectral and chiroptical properties of large helicenes. In particular, they can be used for guiding rational design of strongly chiral chromophores.

Magnetic Circular Dichroism of Naphthalene Derivatives: A Coupled Cluster Singles and Approximate Doubles and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Study

The UV-vis absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of naphthalene and some of its derivatives have been simulated at the Coupled Cluster Singles and Approximate Doubles (CC2) level of theory, and at the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) level using the B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP functionals. DFT and CC2 predict in general opposite energetic ordering of the L_b and L_a transitions (in gas phase), as previously observed in adenine. The CC2 simulations of UV and MCD spectra show the best agreement with the experimental data. Analysis of the Cartesian components of the electric dipole transition strengths and the magnetic dipole transition moment between the excited states have been considered in the interpretation of the electronic transitions and the Faraday B term inversion among the naphthalene derivatives.

Characterization of tetrakis(thiadiazole)porphyrazine metal complexes by magnetic circular dichroism and magnetic circularly polarized luminescence

The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of metal complexes of tetrakis(thiadiazole)porphyrazines ([TTDPzM] with M = 2H^I , Zn^II , Mg^II (H₂ O), and Cd^II ) have been recorded in dimethyl formamide solution. Together with the UV-Vis spectra, the MCD spectra provide useful information about the structure and electronic properties of the complexes. The experimental UV-Vis and MCD spectra compare pretty well with DFT calculations of two sorts, based either on the sum-over-states (SOS) approach or on the complex polarization propagator approach. They further corroborate the findings and interpretation of MCD spectra of porphyrazines based on the model of Michl for peripheral molecular orbitals. Magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL) spectra, quite uncommon in the literature, have been recorded for [TTDPzM] (M = 2H^I , Zn^II , Mg^II (H₂ O)).
