Abstract
Aqueous sodium-ion batteries (ASIBs) have garnered considerable attention for large-scale energy storage because of inherent safety and the Na abundance. Nonetheless, the solidification of aqueous electrolytes under sub-zero conditions results in diminished ionic conductivity and increased viscosity, hindering the electrochemical performance and versatility of ASIBs. Herein, we introduce a novel freeze-tolerant ASIB using antifreezing ethylene glycol-polyacrylamide-sodium perchlorate hydrogel electrolyte, paired with new couple of Na3MnTi(PO4)3 cathode and Fe-based anode. The addition of ethylene glycol in the electrolyte enhances ionic conductivity at cold temperatures and optimizes electrode capacity by reduced hydrogen bonding within the water molecules and a decline in free water activity. The pronounced interaction between ethylene glycol and water, combined with the cooperative effect of the crosslinked polyacrylamide network, enables the hydrogel electrolyte to effectively suppress water solidification and maintain better water-retaining capability, achieving remarkable mechanical extensibility and good ionic conductivity (2.5 mS cm-1) at - 40 °C. Consequently, the ASIB equipped with hydrogel electrolyte delivers high energy density of 43.6 Wh kg-1 and retains 64 % at - 30 °C. Furthermore, the flexible ASIB demonstrates robust mechanical durability when bent or compressed, efficiently powering electronic devices even at - 30 °C. Our findings will pave the way for advancing low-temperature ASIBs with hydrogel-based electrolytes.

Abstract
A series of 19 ionic liquids (ILs) based on phosphonium and imidazolium cations of varying alkyl-chain lengths with the orthoborate anions bis(oxalato)borate [BOB]- , bis(mandelato)borate, [BMB]- and bis(salicylato)borate, [BScB]- , are synthesized and studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). All measured systems display nanostructuring, with 1-methyl-3-n-alkyl imidazolium-orthoborates forming clearly bicontinuous L3 spongelike phases when the alkyl chains are longer than C6 (hexyl). L3 phases are fitted using the Teubner and Strey model, and diffusely-nanostructured systems are primarily fitted using the Ornstein-Zernicke correlation length model. Strongly-nanostructured systems have a strong dependence on the cation, with molecular architecture variation explored to determine the driving forces for self-assembly. The ability to form well-defined complex phases is effectively extinguished in several ways: methylation of the most acidic imidazolium ring proton, replacing the imidazolium 3-methyl group with a longer hydrocarbon chain, substitution of [BOB]- by [BMB]- , or exchanging the imidazolium for phosphonium systems, irrespective of phosphonium architecture. The results suggest there is only a small window of opportunity, in terms of molecular amphiphilicity and cation:anion volume matching, for the formation of stable extensive bicontinuous domains in pure bulk orthoborate-based ILs. Particularly important for self-assembly processes appear to be the ability to form H-bonding networks, which offer additional versatility in imidazolium systems.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Abstract
Extensive atomistic simulations demonstrated that a gradual substitution of hexyl chains with phenyl groups in tetraalkylphosphonium cations results in remarkable changes in hydrogen bonding interactions, liquid structures and scattering structural functions, and rotational dynamics of hexyl chains and phenyl groups in tetraalkylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids. Hydrogen donor sites in hexyl chains present competitive characteristics with those in phenyl groups in coordinating anions, as well as their continuous and intermittent hydrogen bonding dynamics. Cation-cation and anion-anion spatial correlations show concomitant shift to short distances with decreased peak intensities with variations of cation structures, whereas cation-anion correlations have a distinct shift to large radial distances due to decreased associations of anions with neighboring cations. These microstructural changes are qualitatively manifested in shifts of prominent peaks for prevalent charge alternations and adjacency correlations between ion species in scattering structural functions. Meanwhile, rotational dynamics of hexyl chains speed up, which, in turn, slow down rotations of phenyl groups, whereas anions exhibit imperceptible changes in their rotational dynamics. These computational results are intrinsically correlated with conformational flexibilities, molecular sizes, and steric hindrance effects of phenyl groups in comparison with hexyl chains, and constrained distributions of anions around cations in heterogeneous ionic environments.

Abstract
Spiroborate anion-based inorganic electrolytes and ionic liquids (ILs) have fascinating electrochemical and tribological properties and have received widespread attention in industrial applications. The molecular chiralities of spiroborate anions have a significant effect on the microstructures and macroscopic functionalities of these ionic materials in application and thus deserve fundamental consideration. In the current work, we performed quantum chemistry calculations to address the binding strength and coordination structures of chiral bis(mandelato)borate ([BMB]) anions with representative alkali metal ions, as well as the electronic properties of alkali metal ion-[BMB] ion pair complexes. The optimized [BMB] conformers are categorized into V-shaped, bent, and twisted structures with varied electrostatic potential contours and conformational energies and distinct alkali metal ion-[BMB] binding structures. Alkali metal ions have additional associations with phenyl groups in V-shaped [BMB] conformers owing to preferential cation-π interactions. Furthermore, the effects of the molecular chiralities of [BMB] anions on the thermodynamics and microstructural properties of tetraalkylphosphonium [BMB] ILs were studied by performing extensive atomistic interactions. Oxygen atoms in [BMB] anions have competitive hydrogen bonding interactions with hydrogen atoms in cations depending on the molecular chiralities and steric hindrance effects of [BMB] anions. However, the molecular chiralities of [BMB] anions have a negligible effect on the liquid densities of tetraalkylphosphonium [BMB] ILs and the spatial distributions of boron atoms in anions around phosphorous atoms in cations. Enlarging tetraalkylphosphonium cation sizes leads to enhanced cation-anion intermolecular hydrogen bonding and Coulombic interactions due to enhanced segregation of polar groups in apolar networks in heterogeneous IL matrices, as verified by scattering structural functions.

Abstract
A clustering framework is introduced to analyze the microscopic structural organization of molecular pairs in liquids and solutions. A molecular pair is represented by a representative vector (RV). To obtain RV, intermolecular atom distances in the pair are extracted from simulation trajectory as components of the key feature vector (KFV). A specific scheme is then suggested to transform KFV to RV by removing the influence of permutational molecular symmetry on the KFV as the predicted clusters should be independent of possible permutations of identical atoms in the pair. After RVs of pairs are obtained, a clustering analysis technique is finally used to classify all the RVs of molecular pairs into the clusters. The framework is applied to analyze trajectory from molecular dynamics simulations of an ionic liquid (trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(oxalato)borate ([P6,6,6,14 ][BOB])). The molecular pairs are successfully categorized into physically meaningful clusters, and their effectiveness is evaluated by computing the product moment correlation coefficient (PMCC). (Willett, Winterman, and Bawden, J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci. 1986, 26, 109-118; Downs, Willett, and Fisanick, J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci. 1994, 34, 1094-1102) It is observed that representative configurations of two clusters are related to two energy local minimum structures optimized by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, respectively. Several widely used clustering analysis techniques of both nonhierarchical (k-means) and hierarchical clustering algorithms are also evaluated and compared with each other. The proposed KFV technique efficiently reveals local molecular pair structures in the simulated complex liquid. It is a method, which is highly useful for liquids and solutions in particular with strong intermolecular interactions. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
A recently proposed new mechanism and a model of reactive extraction of carboxylic acids by hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) was tested on five systems from published as well as from new equilibrium data on liquid-liquid extraction of butyric and lactic acids (BA and LA) from aqueous solutions. Two phosphonium and one ammonium ILs were used. The model describes experimental data for all systems with a good fit. The mechanism of acid extraction by ILs is very similar for all tested systems. This indicates a more general validity of the developed model. The model allows deeper understanding of regularities in carboxylic acid extraction by hydrophobic ILs. Stability constants of the first acid-IL bonds are by one to three orders of magnitude higher compared to that of acid-acid bonds. Values of stability constants related to two acid-IL bonds are sensitive to a cation and anion structure while stability constants for acid-acid bonds more distant from polar head of IL are not sensitive to IL structure. The stability constants of acid-IL bonds for LA and phosphonium ILs are by more than one order of magnitude lower compared to those for BA and are not influenced with an anion structure. The value of stability constant for the first BA-IL bond is for phosphonium IL with a decanoate anion only one third of those for IL with a phosphinate anion. Differences in the stability of acid-IL bonds for BA and LA can be attributed to hydrophobic interactions which almost do not occur in LA extraction. Ammonium IL also forms a less stable BA-IL bond than the phosphonium IL with the same phosphinate anion. A less stable BA-IL bond can favor the higher recovery of volatile acid from the solvent by vacuum evaporation where free acid is separated instead of acid salts as in classical processes what is a great advantage.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been suggested as eco-friendly alternatives to organic solvents. A trace amount of water is often unavoidable as impurity, and water is also added on purpose to reduce their problematically high viscosity and lower their high price. Understanding the distinct effects of water on the properties of ILs/DESs is highly important. In this review, we collect published experimental and theoretical results for IL/DES-H2O systems at varied water concentrations and analyze them. Results from mechanistic studies, thermodynamic modelling and advanced experiments are collected and critically discussed. Six commonly studied IL/DES-H2O systems were selected to map experimental observations onto microscopic results obtained in mechanistic studies. A great variety of distinct contours of the excess properties can be observed over the entire compositional range, indicating that the properties of IL/DES-H2O systems are highly unpredictable. Mechanistic studies clearly demonstrate that the added H2O rapidly changes the heterogeneous 3D structures of pure ILs/DESs, leading to very different properties and behaviour. There are similarities between aqueous electrolytes and IL/DES solutions but the bulky and asymmetric organic cations in ILs/DESs do not conform to the standard salt dissolution and hydration concepts. Thermodynamic modelling previously assumes ILs/DESs to be either a neutral ion-pair or completely dissociated ions, neglecting specific ion hydration effects. A new conceptual framework is suggested for thermodynamic modelling of IL/DES-H2O binary systems to enable new technologies for their practical applications.
