Molecular-scale understanding of diluent effects on ligand assembly for metal ion separations

Use of metal-selective ligands in solvent extraction is instrumental in extraction of critical materials and recycling, yet, diluent effects on extraction performance are not well understood. Experimental and empirical solvent parameters have been proposed to correlate with extraction performance, but are often inadequate predictors. We follow the hypothesis that the diluents' primary influence on extraction efficiency is whether or not it hinders assembly of the bulky extracting ligands into a geometry necessary for metal complexation. This behavior is readily accessible with molecular dynamics (MD), where the atomistic description of molecules can be applied to arbitrary extractant-solvent molecules and their mixtures. Several simulated quantities are considered, from both pairwise and graph theoretical analyses, and compared to experimental distribution ratio data for americium extraction by TODGA in a series of inert, non-interacting diluents. These simple properties, especially the formation of closed triplets corresponding to the 3 : 1 ligand : metal stoichiometric solvate, suggest a potential predictive power of this approach. This methodology provides a path forward to comprehensively understand and predict diluent effects in more complex systems involving different extracting ligands and multi-component diluent mixtures.

Solvent effects on extractant conformational energetics in liquid-liquid extraction: a simulation study of molecular solvents and ionic liquids

Extractant design in liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a research frontier of metal ion separations that typically focuses on the direct extractant-metal interactions. However, a more detailed understanding of energetic drivers of separations beyond primary metal coordination is often lacking, including the role of solvent in the extractant phase. In this work, we propose a new mechanism for enhancing metal-complexant energetics with nanostructured solvents. Using molecular dynamics simulations with umbrella sampling, we find that the organic solvent can reshape the energetics of the extractant's intramolecular conformational landscape. We calculate free energy profiles of different conformations of a representative bidentate extractant, n-octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutyl carbamoyl methyl phosphinoxide (CMPO), in four different solvents: dodecane, tributyl phosphate (TBP), and dry and wet ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf2N]). By promoting reorganization of the extractant molecule into its binding conformation, our findings reveal how particular solvents can ameliorate this unfavorable step of the metal separation process. In particular, the charge alternating nanodomains formed in ILs substantially reduce the free energy penalty associated with extractant reorganization. Importantly, using alchemical free energy calculations, we find that this stabilization persists even when we explicitly include the extracted cation. These findings provide insight into the energetic drivers of metal ion separations and potentially suggest a new approach to designing effective separations using a molecular-level understanding of solvent effects.

Using Metadynamics to Reveal Extractant Conformational Free Energy Landscapes

Understanding the impact of extractant functionalization on metal-binding energetics in liquid-liquid extraction is essential to guide the development of better separation processes. Traditionally, computational extractant design uses electronic structure calculations on metal-ligand clusters to determine the metal-binding energy of the lowest energy state. Although highly accurate, this approach does not account for all of the relevant physics encountered under experimental conditions. Such methodologies often neglect entropic contributions such as temperature effects and ligand flexibility, in addition to approximating solvent-extractant interactions with implicit solvent models. In this study, we use classical molecular dynamics simulations with an advanced sampling method, metadynamics, to map out extractant molecule conformational free energies in the condensed phase. We generate the complete conformational landscape in solution for a family of bidentate malonamide-based extractants with different functionalizations of the headgroup and the side chains. In particular, we show how such alkyl functionalization reshapes the free energy landscape, affecting the free energy penalty of organizing the extractant into the cis-like metal-binding conformation from the trans-like conformation of the free extractant in solution. Specifically, functionalizing alkyl tails to the center of the headgroup has a greater influence on increasing molecular rigidity and disfavoring the binding conformation than functionalizing side chains. These findings are consistent with trends in metal-binding energetics based on experimentally reported distribution ratios. We also consider a different bidentate extractant molecule, carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide, and show how the choice of solvent can further reshape the conformational energetic landscape. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using molecular dynamics simulations with advanced sampling techniques to investigate extractant conformational energetics in solution, which, more broadly, will enable extractant design that accounts for entropic effects and explicit solvation.

Aqueous Interfaces in Chemical Separations

Chemical separations play a vital role in refinery and reprocessing of critical materials, such as platinum group metals, rare earths, and actinides. The choice of separation system─whether it is liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), sorbents, or membranes─depends on specific needs and applications. In almost all separation processes, the desired metal ions adsorb or transfer across an aqueous interface, such as the solid/liquid interface in sorbents or oil/water interfaces in LLE. Despite these separation technologies being extensively used for decades, our understanding of the molecular-scale mechanisms governing ion adsorption and transport at interfaces remains limited. This knowledge gap presents a significant challenge in meeting the increasing demands for these critical materials due to their growing use in advanced technologies. Fortunately, recent advancements in surface-specific experimental and computational techniques offer promising avenues to bridge this gap and facilitate the development of next-generation separation systems. Interestingly, unanswered questions regarding interfacial phenomena in chemical separations hold great relevance to various fields, including energy storage, geochemistry, and atmospheric chemistry. Therefore, the model interfacial systems developed for studying chemical separations, such as amphiphilic molecules assembled at a solid/water, air/water, or oil/water interface, may have far-reaching implications, extending beyond separations and opening doors to addressing a wide range of scientific inquiries. This perspective discusses recent interfacial studies elucidating amphiphile-ion interactions in chemical separations of metal ions. These studies provide direct, molecular-scale information about solute and solvent behavior at aqueous interfaces, including multivalent and complex ions in highly concentrated solutions, which play key roles in LLE of critical materials.

Tuning Phosphine Oxide-Substituted ortho-Carboranes for Improved Biphasic Electrochemical UO22+ Capture and Release

We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of new, tunable 1,2-bis(diarylphosphine oxide)-ortho-carboranes, derivatives of our previously reported uranyl (UO22+) capture agent 1,2-(Ph2PO)2-1,2-C2B10H10 (POCb). The series features new cage-substituted variants of POCb, namely, 9-I-POCb (POCbI), 9,12-I2-POCb (POCbI2), 9,12-Me2-POCb (POCbMe2), 9,12-Et2-POCb (POCbEt2), and 4,5,7,8,9,10,11,12-Me8-POCb (POCbMe8). Aryl-substituted variants include 1,2-((4-MeO-Ph)2PO)2-Cb ((OMe)POCb) and 1,2-((4-F-Ph)2PO)2-Cb ((F)POCb). The effects of electron-withdrawing (EWG) and electron-donating (EDG) groups on resulting carborane redox potentials were assessed using electrochemical means, and the resulting Lewis basicities were quantified using empirical and competition-based NMR experiments. In organic solution, carboranes substituted with EWGs exhibited weaker coordination to UO22+, whereas those with EDGs exhibited stronger coordination. Similar to the previously reported unsubstituted POCb, the tunable new series of carboranes were electrochemically reduced and used for the biphasic capture of UO22+ from an aqueous to an organic phase and back again (release) through electrochemical oxidation. Extraction and back-extraction efficiencies were determined by analyses of the aqueous phases by ICP-OES. While all reduced nido-carboranes efficiently extracted UO22+ in high yields (78-88%)─with seemingly no correlation to the aforementioned measured Lewis basicities─we found the back-extraction of UO22+ to be significantly improved from POCb and, surprisingly, more closely related to their hydrophobic rather than their Lewis basic properties.

Unraveling the phase diagram-ion transport relationship in aqueous electrolyte solutions and correlating conductivity with concentration and temperature by semi-empirical modeling

The relationship between structure and ion transport in liquid electrolyte solutions is not well understood over the whole concentration and temperature ranges. In this work, we have studied the ionic conductivity (κ) as a function of molar fraction (x) and Temperature (T) for aqueous solutions of salts with nitrate anion and different cations (proton, lithium, calcium, and ammonium) along with their liquid-solid phase diagrams. The connection between the known features in the phase diagrams and the ionic conductivity isotherms is established with an insight on the conductivity mechanism. Also, known isothermal (κ vs.. x) and iso-compositional (κ vs.. T) equations along with a proposed two variables semi-empirical model (κ = f (x, T)) were fitted to the collected data to validate their accuracy. The role of activation energy and free volume in controlling ionic conductivity is discussed. This work brings us closer to the development of a phenomenological model to describe the structure and transport in liquid electrolyte solutions.

Pore Size Dependence of Mass Transfer of Zinc Myoglobin in a Single Mesoporous Silica Particle

This study investigated the pore size dependence of the mass transfer of zinc myoglobin (ZnMb) in a single mesoporous silica particle through confocal fluorescence microspectroscopy. The ZnMb's fluorescence depth profile in the particle was analyzed by a spherical diffusion model, and the intraparticle diffusion coefficient was obtained. The intraparticle diffusion coefficient in the silica particle with various pore sizes (10, 15, 30, and 50 nm) was furthermore analyzed based on a pore and surface diffusion model. Although the mass transfer mechanism in all silica particles followed the pore and surface diffusion model, the adsorption and desorption of ZnMb affected the mass transfer depending on the pore size. The influence of the slow desorption of ZnMb became pronounced for large pore sizes (30 and 50 nm), which was revealed by simulation using a diffusion equation combined with the adsorption-desorption kinetics. The distribution of ZnMb was suppressed in small pore sizes (10 and 15 nm) owing to the adsorption of ZnMb onto the entrance of the pore. Thus, we revealed the mass transfer mechanism of ZnMb in the silica particle with different pore sizes.

Anar Phali (Opuntia ficus) juice extract as a novel pollution-free source of natural betalain dye for wool yarn

Green products such as plant pigments in all filed are gaining fame globally due to their excellent ayurvedic and biological characteristics. In this study, microwave rays have been employed for the isolation of colorants from Anar Phali while bio-mordant have been included to get color-fast shades. The colorant was isolated in an acidic medium before and after microwave rays for 2 min. For getting darker shades with different tints, sustainable chemical and plant-based extracts as bio-mordant have been employed before and after bio coloration of wool yarn at given conditions. CIE Lab system computed in Colori-spectrophotometer (CS-410) was used to observe the change in color depth and tonal variation of dyed fabrics, and ISO standard methods have been employed to rate the colorfastness to light, washing, and rubbing at grey scale. It is concluded that microwave rays have an excellent sustainable efficacy to isolate colorant from Anar Phali powder for wool dyeing, whereas the addition of bio-mordants has made the process more sustainable and eco-friendly.

Hierarchical Aggregation in a Complex Fluid─The Role of Isomeric Interconversion

There is an ever-increasing body of evidence that metallic complexes involving amphiliphic ligands do not form normal solutions in organic solvents. Instead, they form complex fluids with intricate structures. For example, the metallic complexes may aggregate into clusters, and these clusters themselves may aggregate into superclusters. To gain a deeper insight into the mechanisms at play, we have used an improved force field to conduct extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed of zirconium nitrate, water, nitric acid, tri-n-butyl phosphate, and n-octane. The important new finding is that a dynamic equilibrium between the cis and trans isomers of the metal complex is likely to play a key role in the aggregation behavior. The isolated cis and trans isomers have similar energies, but simulation indicates that the clusters consist predominantly of cis isomers. With increasing metal concentration, we hypothesize that more clustering occurs and the chemical equilibrium shifts toward the cis isomer. It is possible that such isomeric effects play a role in the liquid-liquid extraction of other species and the inclusion of such effects in flow sheet modeling may lead to a better description of the process.

A multi-faceted approach to probe organic phase composition in TODGA systems with 1-alcohol phase modifiers

The effect of varying 1-alcohol alkyl chain length on extraction of lanthanides (Lns), H₂O, and H⁺ was studied with tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) via solvent extraction coupled with FT-IR investigations. This multi-faceted approach provided understanding regarding the relationship between extracted Lns, H₂O and H⁺, 1-alcohol volume fraction, and 1-alcohol alkyl chain length. Under acidic conditions there is competition with 1-alcohols and their ability to solubilize aggregates and incidentally induce third phase formation by increasing the extraction of H₂O. At low 1-alcohol concentrations (5 vol%), the trend for 1-alcohol alkyl lengths in solubilizing the aggregates is 1-hexanol > 1-octanol > 1-decanol. Shorter alkyl chains suppress aggregation, ultimately resulting in lower H₂O concentrations and less available TODGA to hydrogen bond with H⁺. Increasing the 1-alcohol concentration to 30 vol% results in the opposite trend, with longer alkyl chains suppressing aggregation. These results suggest this approach is effective at probing trends in the organic phase micro-structure, and indicates trends across the Ln period with various 1-alcohol alkyl chain lengths are a function of outer-sphere coordination.

Aggregation Behavior of Nitrilotriacetamide (NTAmide) Ligands in Thorium(IV) Extraction from Acidic Medium: Small-Angle Neutron Scattering, Fourier Transform Infrared, and Theoretical Studies

Two tripodal amides obtained from nitrilotriacetic acid with n-butyl and n-octyl alkyl chains (HBNTA(L_I) and HONTA(L_II), respectively) were studied for the extraction of Th(IV) ions from nitric acid medium. The effect of the diluent medium, i.e., n-dodecane alone and a mixture of n-dodecane and 1-decanol, onto aggregate formation were investigated using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies. In addition, the influence of the ligand structure, nitric acid, and Th(IV) loading onto ligand aggregation and third-phase formation tendency was discussed.The L_I/L_II exist as monomers (aggregarte radius for L_I: 6.0 Å; L_II:7.4 Å) in the presence of 1-decanol, whereas L_II forms dimers (aggregarte radius for L_II:9.3 Å; L_I does not dissolve in n-dodecane) in the absence of 1-decanol. The aggregation number increases for both the ligands after HNO₃ and Th(IV) loading. The maximum organic concentration (0.050 ± 0.004 M) of Th(IV) was reached without third-phase formation for 0.1 M L_I/L_II dissolved in 20% isodecanol +80% n-dodecane. The interaction of 1-decanol with L_II and HNO₃/Th(IV) with amidic oxygens of L_I/L_II results in shift of carbonyl stretching frequency, as shown by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) studies. The structural and bonding information of the Th-L_I/L_II complex were derived from the density functional theoretical (DFT) studies. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulations suggested that the aggregation behavior of the ligand in the present system is governed by the population of hydrogen bonds by phase modifier around the ligand molecules. Although the theoretical studies suggested higher Gibbs free energy of complexation for Th⁴⁺ ions with L_I than L_II, the extraction was found to be higher with the latter, possibly due to the higher lipophilicity and solubility of the Th-L_II aggregate in the nonpolar media.

The Unexpected Role of Cations in the Self-Assembly of Positively Charged Amphiphiles at Liquid/Liquid Interfaces

Conventional wisdom suggests that cations play a minimal role in the assembly of cationic amphiphiles. Here, we show that at liquid/liquid (L/L) interfaces, specific cation effects can modulate the assemblies of hydrophobic tails in an oil phase despite being attached to cationic headgroups in the aqueous phase. We used oligo-dimethylsiloxane (ODMS) methyl imidazolium amphiphiles to identify these specific interactions at hexadecane/aqueous interfaces. Small cations, such as Li⁺, bind to the O atoms in the ODMS tail and pin it to the interface, thereby imposing a kinked conformation─as evidenced by vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. While larger Cs⁺ ions more readily partition to the interface, they do not form analogous complexes. Our data not only point to ways for controlling amphiphile structure at L/L interfaces but also suggest a means for the separation of Li⁺, or related applications, in soft-matter electronics.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Aggregation Behavior of N,N,N',N'-Tetraoctyl Diglycolamide

Liquid–liquid extraction is a commonly used technique to separate metals and is a process that has particular relevance to the nuclear industry. There has been a drive to use environmentally friendly ligands composed only of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. One example is the i-SANEX process that has been developed to separate minor actinides from spent nuclear fuel. The underlying science of such processes, is, however, both complex and intriguing. Recent research indicates that the liquid phases involved are frequently structured fluids with a hierarchical organization of aggregates. Effective flow-sheet modeling of such processes is likely to benefit from the knowledge of the fundamental properties of these phases. As a stepping stone toward this, we have performed molecular dynamics simulations on a metal free i-SANEX system composed of the ligand N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA), diluent hydrogenated tetrapropylene (TPH), and polar species water and nitric acid. We have also studied the effects of adding n-octanol and swapping TPH for n-dodecane. It would seem sensible to understand this simpler system before introducing metal complexes. Such an understanding would ideally arise from studying the system’s properties over a wide range of compositions. The large number of components, however, precludes a comprehensive scan of compositions, so we have chosen to study a fixed concentration of TODGA while varying the concentrations of water and nitric acid over a substantial range. Reverse aggregates are observed, with polar species in the interior in contact with the polar portions of the TODGA molecules and the organic diluent on the exterior in contact with the TODGA alkyl chains. These aggregates are irregular in shape and grow in size as the amount of water and nitric acid increases. At a sufficiently high polar content, a single extended cluster forms corresponding to the third phase formation. No well-defined bonding motifs were observed between the polar species and TODGA. The cluster size distribution fits an isodesmic model, where the Gibbs energy change of adding a TODGA molecule to a cluster ranges between 4.5 and 7.0 kJ mol^–1, depending on the system composition. The addition of n-octanol was found to reduce the degree of aggregation, with n-octanol acting as a co-surfactant. Exchanging the diluent TPH for n-dodecane also decreased the aggregation. We present evidence that this is due to the greater penetration of n-dodecane into the reverse aggregates. It is known, however, that the propensity for the third phase formation is greater with n-dodecane as the diluent than is the case with TPH, but we argue that these two results are not contradictory. This research casts light on the driving forces for aggregation, informs process engineers as to what species are present, and indicates that flow-sheet liquid–liquid extraction modeling might benefit by incorporating an isodesmic aggregation approach.

Advancing Chemical Separations: Unraveling the Structure and Dynamics of Phase Splitting in Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), the go-to process for a variety of chemical separations, is limited by spontaneous organic phase splitting upon sufficient solute loading, called third phase formation. In this study we explore the applicability of critical phenomena theory to gain insight into this deleterious phase behavior with the goal of improving separations efficiency and minimizing waste. A series of samples representative of rare earth purification were constructed to include each of one light and one heavy lanthanide (cerium and lutetium) paired with one of two common malonamide extractants (DMDOHEMA and DMDBTDMA). The resulting postextraction organic phases are chemically complex and often form rich hierarchical structures whose statics and dynamics near the critical point were probed herein with small-angle X-ray scattering and high-speed X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Despite their different extraction behaviors, all samples show remarkably similar critical behavior with exponents well described by classical critical point theory consistent with the 3D Ising model, where the critical behavior is characterized by fluctuations with a single diverging length scale. This unexpected result indicates a significant reduction in relevant chemical parameters at the critical point, indicating that the underlying behavior of phase transitions in LLE rely on far fewer variables than are generally assumed. The obtained scalar order parameter is attributed to the extractant fraction of the extractant/diluent mixture, revealing that other solution components and their respective concentrations simply shift the critical temperature but do not affect the nature of the critical fluctuations. These findings point to an opportunity to drastically simplify studies of liquid-liquid phase separation and phase diagram development in general while providing insights into LLE process improvement.

The pervasive impact of critical fluctuations in liquid-liquid extraction organic phases

Liquid-liquid extraction is an essential chemical separation technique where polar solutes are extracted from an aqueous phase into a nonpolar organic solvent by amphiphilic extractant molecules. A fundamental limitation to the efficiency of this important technology is third phase formation, wherein the organic phase splits upon sufficient loading of polar solutes. The nanoscale drivers of phase splitting are challenging to understand in the complex hierarchically structured organic phases. In this study, we demonstrate that the organic phase structure and phase behavior are fundamentally connected in a way than can be understood with critical phenomena theory. For a series of binary mixtures of trialkyl phosphate extractants with linear alkane diluents, we combine small angle x-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate how the organic phase mesostructure over a wide range of compositions is dominated by critical concentration fluctuations associated with the critical point of the third phase formation phase transition. These findings reconcile many longstanding inconsistencies in the literature where small angle scattering features, also consistent with such critical fluctuations, were interpreted as reverse micellar-like particles. Overall, this study shows how the organic phase mesostructure and phase behavior are intrinsically linked, deepening our understanding of both and providing a new framework for using molecular structure and thermodynamic variables to control mesostructure and phase behavior in liquid-liquid extraction.
