Recent advances in nanoflowers: compositional and structural diversification for potential applications

In recent years, nanoscience and nanotechnology have emerged as promising fields in materials science. Spectroscopic techniques like scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy have revolutionized the characterization, manipulation, and size control of nanomaterials, enabling the creation of diverse materials such as fullerenes, graphene, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanorods, nanowires, nanoparticles, nanocones, and nanosheets. Among these nanomaterials, there has been considerable interest in flower-shaped hierarchical 3D nanostructures, known as nanoflowers. These structures offer advantages like a higher surface-to-volume ratio compared to spherical nanoparticles, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly preparation methods. Researchers have explored various applications of 3D nanostructures with unique morphologies derived from different nanoflowers. The nanoflowers are classified as organic, inorganic and hybrid, and the hybrids are a combination thereof, and most research studies of the nanoflowers have been focused on biomedical applications. Intriguingly, among them, inorganic nanoflowers have been studied extensively in various areas, such as electro, photo, and chemical catalysis, sensors, supercapacitors, and batteries, owing to their high catalytic efficiency and optical characteristics, which arise from their composition, crystal structure, and local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Despite the significant interest in inorganic nanoflowers, comprehensive reviews on this topic have been scarce until now. This is the first review focusing on inorganic nanoflowers for applications in electro, photo, and chemical catalysts, sensors, supercapacitors, and batteries. Since the early 2000s, more than 350 papers have been published on this topic with many ongoing research projects. This review categorizes the reported inorganic nanoflowers into four groups based on their composition and structure: metal, metal oxide, alloy, and other nanoflowers, including silica, metal-metal oxide, core-shell, doped, coated, nitride, sulfide, phosphide, selenide, and telluride nanoflowers. The review thoroughly discusses the preparation methods, conditions for morphology and size control, mechanisms, characteristics, and potential applications of these nanoflowers, aiming to facilitate future research and promote highly effective and synergistic applications in various fields.

Inorganic Nanoflowers—Synthetic Strategies and Physicochemical Properties for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Nanoflowers, which are flower-shaped nanomaterials, have attracted significant attention from scientists due to their unique morphologies, facile synthetic methods, and physicochemical properties such as a high surface-to-volume ratio, enhanced charge transfer and carrier immobility, and an increased surface reaction efficiency. Nanoflowers can be synthesized using inorganic or organic materials, or a combination of both (called a hybrid), and are mainly used for biomedical applications. Thus far, researchers have focused on hybrid nanoflowers and only a few studies on inorganic nanoflowers have been reported. For the first time in the literature, we have consolidated all the reports on the biomedical applications of inorganic nanoflowers in this review. Herein, we review some important inorganic nanoflowers, which have applications in antibacterial treatment, wound healing, combinatorial cancer therapy, drug delivery, and biosensors to detect diseased conditions such as diabetes, amyloidosis, and hydrogen peroxide poisoning. In addition, we discuss the recent advances in their biomedical applications and preparation methods. Finally, we provide a perspective on the current trends and potential future directions in nanoflower research. The development of inorganic nanoflowers for biomedical applications has been limited to date. Therefore, a diverse range of nanoflowers comprising inorganic elements and materials with composite structures must be synthesized using ecofriendly synthetic strategies.

A redox-active support for the synthesis of Au@SnO2 core-shell nanostructure and SnO2 quantum dots with efficient photoactivities

A defect pyrochlore-type Sn1.06Nb2O5.59F0.97 (SnNbOF) nano-octahedron is used as a redox-active support for fabricating Au@SnO2 core-shell and SnO2 quantum dots at room temperature without the use of organic species or foreign reducing reagents. Gold (Au) and SnO2 components were obtained through an in situ redox reaction between the HAuCl4 and reductive Sn2+ ions incorporated in SnNbOF. The composition and morphology of the resulting nanocomposites (denoted as Au-SnNbOF) could be controlled by adjusting the Au/SnNbOF ratio. The Au-SnNbOF nanocomposites exhibited efficient photoactivities for methyl orange (MO) degradation under the visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), during which the MO was almost completely degraded within 8 min. Among all the samples, the 5wt% Au-SnNbOF nanocomposite had the highest rate constant (0.43 min-1), which was 40 times higher than that of the blank SnNbOF.

Magnetic Fe3O4-Supported Gold Nanoflowers with Lattice-Selected Surfaces: Preparation and Catalytic Performance

Nanoflowers (NFs)-shape-controlled noble metal nanocrystals-have garnered significant attention because of their novel catalytic properties and applicability. In this paper, we report the preparation and catalytic performance of a magnetic Fe₃O₄-supported AuNF catalyst with a clean surface. The magnetically supported AuNFs were obtained by using magnetic Fe₃O₄ as the support. However, when nonmagnetic γ-Al₂O₃ was utilized as the support, the AuNFs did not exhibit a magnetic response. These supported AuNFs were utilized to catalyze the oxidation of 1-phenylethyl alcohol to acetophenone using air (1 atm) as the oxidant. The rate of formation of acetophenone using supported AuNFs was 8-fold higher than that of acetophenone using supported spherical Au nanoparticles of comparable size. In addition, the Fe₃O₄-supported AuNFs exhibited a higher rate of formation of acetophenone than the Al₂O₃-supported AuNFs. The Fe₃O₄-supported AuNFs were recovered using a magnet, and the recovered catalyst was reused under identical catalytic reaction conditions. The rate of formation of acetophenone using recovered Fe₃O₄-supported AuNFs remained unchanged, demonstrating no loss of catalytic activity.

Bovine serum albumin assisted preparation of ultra-stable gold nanoflowers and their selective Raman response to charged dyes

In this work, we demonstrated a facile, one-pot approach for preparation of gold nanoflowers by using tetrachloroauric acid as a gold precursor, ascorbic acid as a reductant, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a ligand. It was found that the morphology of the as-prepared gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) was dependent on the concentration of BSA introduced into the reaction solutions. It is identified that BSA directed the preferential growth along the 〈111〉 direction, which contributed to the anisotropic growth of Au NPs and thus the formation of Au nanoflowers. An increased concentration of BSA reduced the reactivity of the gold precursor, leading to the formation of Au nanoflowers with increased size, which could also be obtained by decreasing the amount of reductant added. The Au nanoflowers were ultra-stable in the presence of chloride ions under acidic pH, making them suitable for selective detection of oppositely charged dyes via surface-enhanced Raman scattering according to the isoelectric point (∼4.7) of BSA capped on their surface.

Core-Shell Au@SnO2 Nanostructures Supported on Na2Ti4O9 Nanobelts as a Highly Active and Deactivation-Resistant Catalyst toward Selective Nitroaromatics Reduction

Catalysis using gold (Au) nanoparticles has become an important field of chemistry. However, activity loss caused by aggregation or leaching of Au nanoparticles greatly limits their application in catalytic reaction. Herein, we report a facile and green synthesis of a core-shell Au@SnO₂ nanocomposite, exhibiting excellent activity toward selective nitroaromatics reduction under mild conditions. The core-shell Au@SnO₂ nanocomposite (Au size = ∼50 nm; shell thickness = ca. 16 nm) is conceived and validated by a direct redox reaction between HAuCl₄ and SnF₂. Optimization of the core size, shell thickness, and dispersion of Au@SnO₂ has been introduced by an alkaline surface supported by negatively charged metal oxide Na₂Ti₄O₉. The as-obtained Au-Sn-Na₂Ti₄O₉ catalyst with much smaller Au cores (ca. 5 nm) and thinner SnO₂ nondensed shells (ca. 4 nm) exhibits highly improved catalytic activities for nitro reduction compared to most of the known Au-based catalysts. Moreover, the core-shell Au@SnO₂ structure inhibits the leaching and agglomeration of Au nanoparticles and thus leads to superior catalytic durability.

Au-Ag Nanoflower Catalysts with Clean Surfaces for Alcohol Oxidation

Shape-controlled metal nanocrystals, such as nanowires and nanoflowers, are attractive owing to their potentially novel catalytic properties and bimetallic nanocrystals composed of two distinct metals are expected to act as highly active catalysts. However, their catalytic activities are limited because of the capping agents adsorbed on the metal surfaces, which are necessary for the preparation and dispersion of these nanocrystals in solvents. Therefore, the preparation of bimetallic shape-controlled noble metal nanocrystals with clean surfaces, devoid of almost all capping agents, are expected to have high catalytic activity. Herein, we report the preparation of bimetallic Au-Ag nanoflowers using melamine as the capping agent. The bimetallic Au-Ag nanoflowers with a clean surface were subsequently obtained by a support and extraction method. The bimetallic nanoflowers with a clean surface were then used for the aerobic oxidation of 1-phenylethyl alcohol and they exhibited high rates for the formation of acetophenone compared to Au nanoflowers and spherical nanoparticles with almost the same size and Au/Ag ratio. We also show that Au-Ag nanoflowers containing only 1 % Ag (Au₉₉ -Ag₁ NFs) exhibit the highest rate of acetophenone formation among Au-Ag nanoflowers with different Au/Ag ratios owing to an increase in the electron density of the Au atoms that act as active sites for the oxidation of 1-phenylethyl alcohol.
