Decomposable Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Super-Hydrophobic Three-Dimensional Porous Material for Effective Water/Oil Separation

Superwetting Stainless Steel Mesh Used for Both Immiscible Oil/Water and Surfactant-Stabilized Emulsion Separation

The design and fabrication of advanced membrane materials for versatile oil/water separation are major challenges. In this work, a superwetting stainless steel mesh (SSM) modified with in situ-grown TiO2 was successfully prepared via one-pot hydrothermal synthesis at 180 °C for 24 h. The modified SSM was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The resultant SSM membrane was superhydrophilic/superoleophilic in air, superoleophobic underwater, with an oil contact angle (OCA) underwater of over 150°, and superhydrophobic under oil, with a water contact angle (WCA) as high as 158°. Facile separation of immiscible light oil/water and heavy oil/water was carried out using the prewetting method with water and oil, respectively. For both "oil-blocking" and "water-blocking" membranes, the separation efficiency was greater than 98%. Also, these SSMs wrapped in TiO2 nanoparticles broke emulsions well, separating oil-in-water and oil-in-water emulsions with an efficiency greater than 99.0%. The as-prepared superwetting materials provided a satisfactory solution for the complicated or versatile oil/water separation.

Special wettable Azadirachta indica leaves like microarchitecture mesh filtration membrane produced by galvanic replacement reaction for layered oil/water separation

The oil/water separation has received significant attention due to its critical environmental impact. The special wettable surfaces are highly desired to deal with the oil/water mixtures. This work demonstrates a simple two-step method to develop a superhydrophobic Azadirachta indica leaves like Ag-decorated electrochemically copper-coated stainless-steel mesh (SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh) for efficient separation of oil/water mixtures. In the first step, the electrodeposition of the copper took place on the mesh surface at a suitable applied potential. In the second step, the galvanic replacement reaction between the Ag⁺ and electrodeposited Cu produced the fascinating superhydrophobic Ag leaves on the mesh surface. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh was thoroughly characterized by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, surface wettability analysis, and the contact analyzer. The morphological analysis has shown the unique leafy structures of the reduced Ag on the surface of the mesh. The XPS analysis has confirmed that most of the Ag present on the surface is in zerovalent form. The combination of the electrodeposition and the displacement reaction between the copper and the silver turned the surface superhydrophobic, and the water contact angle was significantly improved from 115° to 158°. The designed SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent selectivity for oil in oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of 99.1% with an exceptionally high flux of 8963 L m^-2h^-1. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent reusability, and after 15 cycles of separation, no significant decrease in the oil/water separation efficiency was observed.

Novel Hydrophobic Polyvinyl-Alcohol Formaldehyde Sponges: Synthesis, Characterization, Fast and Effective Organic Solvent Uptake from Contaminated Soil Samples

In the present research work, PVFTX-100, PVFSDS, and PVFT-80 sponges were prepared using polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) with surfactants triton X-100/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/Tween 80, respectively, for the removal of organic solvents from polluted soil/water samples. All three obtained sponges were further made hydrophobic using dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS). The prepared sponges were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques and SEM analysis. The peaks obtained near 1050 cm^-1 and 790 cm^-1 were attributed to Si-O-C and alkyl side chain C-H stretching vibration that confirmed the formation of desired sponges. The SEM images showed the random roughness with a number of protrusions on sponge surfaces, which further played an important role in the absorption and retention of organic solvents molecules. The Sears method was chosen to calculate the surface area and pore volume of all the synthesized sponge samples. Among all three prepared sponges, the PVFTX-100 sponge showed a high pore volume and large surface area, with a maximum percentage absorption capacity of 96%, 91%, 89.9%, 85.6%, and 80 for chlorobenzene, toluene, diesel, petrol, and hexane, respectively, after eightcycles. The organic solvent uptake using PVFTX-100, PVFSDS, and PVFT-80 sponges is quite a unique and simple technology, which could be employed at a large scale for contaminated soil/water systems.

Membranes for Oil/Water Separation: A Review

Recent advancements in separation and membrane technologies have shown a great potential in removing oil from wastewaters effectively. In addition, the capabilities have improved to fabricate membranes with tunable properties in terms of their wettability, permeability, antifouling, and mechanical properties that govern the treatment of oily wastewaters. Herein, authors have critically reviewed the literature on membrane technology for oil/water separation with a specific focus on: 1) membrane properties and characterization, 2) development of various materials (e.g., organic, inorganic, and hybrid membranes, and innovative materials), 3) membranes design (e.g., mixed matrix nanocomposite and multilayers), and 4) membrane fabrication techniques and surface modification techniques. The current challenges and future research directions in materials and fabrication techniques for membrane technology applications in oil/water separation are also highlighted. Thus, this review provides helpful guidance toward finding more effective, practical, and scalable solutions to tackle environmental pollution by oils.

Facile Preparation of Robust Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic TiO2-Decorated Polyvinyl Alcohol Sponge for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Oily wastewater and oil spills pose a threat to the environment and human health, and porous sponge materials are highly desired for oil/water separation. Herein, we design a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO₂-decorated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge material for efficient oil/water separation. The TiO₂-PVA sponge is obtained by firmly anchoring TiO₂ nanoparticles onto the skeleton surface of pristine PVA sponge via the cross-linking reactions between TiO₂ nanoparticles and H₃BO₃ and KH550, followed by the chemical modification of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane. The as-prepared TiO₂-PVA sponge shows a high water contact angle of 157° (a sliding angle of 5.5°) and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, showing excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. The TiO₂-PVA sponge exhibits excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of immersing it in the corrosive solutions and solvents, boiling it in water, and the sandpaper abrasion test. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO₂-PVA sponge possesses excellent absorption capacity of oils or organic solvents ranging from 4.3 to 13.6 times its own weight. More importantly, the as-prepared TiO₂-PVA sponge can separate carbon tetrachloride from the oil-water mixture with a separation efficiency of 97.8% with the aid of gravity and maintains a separation efficiency of 96.5% even after 15 cyclic oil/water separation processes. Therefore, the rationally designed superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO₂-PVA sponge shows great potential in practical applications of dealing with oily wastewater and oil spills.

Development of coin-shaped ZIF-7 functionalized superhydrophobic polysulfone composite foams for continuous removal of oily contaminants from water

Development of efficient absorbent materials for oil spillage clean-up and environmental pollution remediation is highly desired but remains a challenge. In this work, superhydrophobic/superoleophilic polysulfone based ZIF-7 composite (SPZ) foams were fabricated via chemical modification of polysulfone and integrating with hydrophobic coin-shaped ZIF-7 particles. The synergistic approaches provided the SPZ foams with high porosity, low density and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic features (θ_water=162.3°, θ_oil=0°) and outstanding self-cleaning property. The as-prepared SPZ foams exhibited highly selective absorption capacity (up to 3800 wt%) for various kinds of oils and organic solvents. Furthermore, the SPZ foams still maintained 95.2% of its pristine absorption capacity and the θ_water remained at 143.6° after ten absorption/distillation cycles. The SPZ foam showed outstanding separation ability towards different types of emulsions with separation efficiency all above 97%. The high oil/water separation efficiency and robust reusability made the SPZ foams promising absorbent in dealing with practical oil spills.

Fabrication of Cationic Poly(vinyl alcohol) Films Cross-Linked Using Copolymers Containing Quaternary Ammonium Cations, Benzoxaborole, and Carboxy Groups

Water-insoluble cationic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films were fabricated using a mixed aqueous solution of PVA and poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (METAC)-co-methacrylic acid (MAAc)-co-5-methacrylamido-1,2-benzoxaborole (MAAmBO)) copolymer (3D). The surface of the PVA film is typically negatively charged, and simple fabrication methods for water-insoluble PVA films with cationic surface charges are required to expand their application fields. METAC, which has a permanent positive charge owing to the presence of a quaternary ammonium cation, was selected as the cationic unit. The MAAc and MAAmBO units were used as two types of cross-linking structures for the thermal cross-linking of the hydroxy and carboxy groups of the MAAc unit (covalent bonding) as well as the diol and benzoxaborole groups of the MAAmBO unit (dynamic covalent bonding). The films were thermally cross-linked at 135 °C for 4 h without the addition of materials. After immersion in surplus water at 80 °C for 3 h, the cross-linked PVA/3D films retained almost 100% of their weights. The ζ-potential of the water-insoluble PVA/3D film was 9.4 ± 0.8 mV. The PVA/3D film was strongly dyed using anionic acid red 1 (AR1) because of its positively charged surface. Interestingly, it could also be slightly dyed using cationic methylene blue (MB) and became transparent (original state) after immersion in water for 2 days. These results suggested that positive and negative charges coexisted in the PVA/3D film, and the surface properties were positively inclined. Moreover, the degree of hemolysis of the PVA/3D films was similar to that of the negative control, which showed high blood compatibility. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the fabrication of water-insoluble cationic PVA films using two types of cross-linking structures containing carboxy and benzoxaborole groups. The cross-linked PVA films were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and contact angle (CA) and ζ-potential measurement, as well as by determining the mechanical properties, adsorption of charged molecules, and biocompatibility. These readily fabricated water-insoluble PVA films with positive charges can show potential applications in sensors, adsorption systems, and antimicrobial materials.

Nature-Inspired Structures Applied in Heat Transfer Enhancement and Drag Reduction

Heat exchangers are general equipment for energy exchange in the industrial field. Enhancing the heat transfer of a heat exchanger with low pump energy consumption is beneficial to the maximum utilization of energy. The optimization design for enhanced heat transfer structure is an effective method to improve the heat transfer coefficient. Present research shows that the biomimetic structures applied in different equipment could enhance heat transfer and reduce flow resistance significantly. Firstly, six biomimetic structures including the fractal-tree-like structure, conical column structure, hybrid wetting structure, scale structure, concave-convex structure and superhydrophobic micro-nano structure were summarized in this paper. The biomimetic structure characteristics and heat transfer enhancement and drag reduction mechanisms were analyzed. Secondly, four processing methods including photolithography, nanoimprinting, femtosecond laser processing and 3D printing were introduced as the reference of biomimetic structure machining. Finally, according to the systemic summary of the research review, the prospect of biomimetic heat transfer structure optimization was proposed.

Advanced Materials with Special Wettability toward Intelligent Oily Wastewater Remediation

Clean water resources are essential to our human society. Oil leakage has caused water contamination, which leads to serious shortage of clean water, environmental deterioration, and even increasing number of deaths. It is of great urgency to solve the oil-polluted water problems worldwide. Efficient oil/water separation, especially emulsified oil/water mixture separation, is widely used to mitigate water pollution issues. Recently, advanced materials with special wettability have been employed for oily wastewater remediation. Moreover, by endowing them with various intelligent functions, smart materials can effectively separate complex oil/water mixtures including extremely stable emulsions. In this review, oil/water separation mechanisms and various fabrication methods of special wettability separation materials are summarized. We highlight the special wettable materials with intelligent functions, including photocatalytic, self-healing, and switchable oil/water separation materials, which can achieve self-cleaning, self-healing, and efficient oily wastewater treatment. In each section, the acting mechanisms, fabricating technologies, representative studies, and separation efficiency are briefly introduced. Lastly, the challenges and outlook for oil/water separation based on the special wettability materials are discussed.

Scalable and Robust Bacterial Cellulose Carbon Aerogels as Reusable Absorbents for High-Efficiency Oil/Water Separation

Efficient selective separation of oils or organic pollutants from water is important for ecological, environmental conservation and sustainable development. Various absorption methods have emerged; the majority of them still suffer from defects including low removal efficiency, a complicated preparation process, and high cost. Herein, we present a highly porous and mechanical resilient bacterial cellulose (BC) carbon aerogel directly from BC hydrogel via facile directional freeze-drying and high-temperature carbonization. The resultant BC carbon aerogel showed excellent mechanical compressibility (maximal height compression ∼99.5%) and elastic recovery due to the porous structure. Taking advantages of the high thermal stability and superhydrophobicity, the BC carbon aerogel was directly used as a versatile adsorbent for oil/water separation. The result demonstrated that the BC carbon aerogel showed super oil/water separation selectivity with the oil absorption capacity as high as 132-274 g g^-1. More importantly, the BC carbon aerogel adsorbent can be reused by a simple absorption/combustion method and still keep high-efficiency oil absorption capacity and excellent superhydrophobicity after 20 absorption/combustion cycles, displaying recyclability and robust stability. In sum, the BC carbon aerogel introduced here is easy to fabricate, ecofriendly, highly scalable, low cost, mechanically robust, and reusable; all of these features make it highly attractive for oil/water separation application.

A natural polymer-based porous sponge with capillary-mimicking microchannels for rapid hemostasis

Natural polymer materials have attracted great attention in the field of hemostasis because of their wide range of source, nontoxicity, hydrophilicity, and air permeability. In the present study, two natural polymers composed of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMCNa) plus γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) that serves as a crosslinking agent were selected to synthesize a capillary-mimicking composite hemostatic (CCK) sponge with a low density, interconnected microchannel architecture, suitable mechanical strength, high resilience, and ultrastrong liquid absorption capacity. The introduction of a large number of hydrophilic carboxymethyl functional groups and the design of capillary-mimicking structures formed by the ice segregation-induced self-assembly (ISISA) process endowed the CCK sponges with an ultrastrong liquid absorption capacity, which significantly enhanced the hemostatic ability of the materials. Both in vivo and in vitro hemostatic experiments confirmed the potential of the CCK sponges to achieve rapid hemostasis. Additionally, cytotoxicity and hemolysis assays showed that the CCK sponges exhibited good biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The possible hemostatic mechanism was also discussed in this study. In conclusion, the capillary-mimicking hemostatic sponge exhibits a high potential to induce rapid hemostasis in prehospital emergency and clinical settings. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In the present study, an oriented composite hemostatic (CCK) sponge with a capillary-mimicking structure formed by the ice segregation-induced self-assembly (ISISA) process was designed and used to achieve rapid hemostasis. The unique aligned microchannel structure of the sponge exhibited an ultrastrong capillary-mimicking action and endowed the prepared CCK hemostatic sponge with a strong liquid absorption capacity. By changing the proportion of raw materials, we could modify the unique capillary-mimicking structure with aligned microchannels. Two natural polymer-based materials with abundant hydrophilic groups were chosen to prepare the CCK sponge to fully utilize the characteristics of this structure. The oriented natural polymer-based porous sponge with capillary-mimicking microchannels exhibited a strong hemostatic ability in both in vivo and in vitro tests. The results showed that the CCK sponge with the capillary-mimicking structure has a high potential to achieve rapid hemostasis.

Investigation of Effects of Acid, Alkali, and Salt Solutions on Fluorinated Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Extensive studies have been carried out to investigate the stability of superhydrophobic surfaces under acid, alkali, and salt solutions. It is noted that previous literature studies just demonstrated a variety of experimental phenomena. However, very few works have focused on the protection mechanism or failure mechanism of fluorinated superhydrophobic surfaces from the perspective of chemical aspects. Herein, this paper aims to investigate the effects of acid, alkali, and salt solutions on the stability of fluorinated superhydrophobic surfaces, and the anticorrosion/corrosion mechanism will be further proposed. The superhydrophobic coating was obtained on silicon substrates by laser surface texturing followed by fluoroalkyl silane modification. The resultant surfaces presented a water contact angle (WCA) of 157.6 ± 0.4° with a small water sliding angle (WSA) of 1.3 ± 0.3°. The newly fabricated superhydrophobic surfaces were then immersed in different concentrations of corrosive solutions (acid, alkali, and salt solutions). The revolution of surface wettability and surface morphology on treated silicon surfaces was evaluated through WCAs, scanning electron microscopy, and white light confocal microscopy. The results indicate that the hydrogen ions (H⁺) played a positive role in the retention of superhydrophobicity. However, the hydroxyl (OH^-) and chloride ions (Cl^-) presented the negative influence. The protection mechanism or corrosion mechanism under different solutions was proposed based on the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results. In addition, the potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements provided strong support in data and were conducted to verify the rationality of the proposed mechanism.

Paraffin Oil Based Soft-Template Approach to Fabricate Reusable Porous PDMS Sponge for Effective Oil/Water Separation

Three-dimensional porous material holds enormous potential in the field of life science and environmental protection. In this work, we proposed a facile route for the large-scale synthesis of porous poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) sponge via paraffin oil based emulsion technique. A stable emulsion could be formed by emulsifying water in the PDMS solution with the aid of paraffin oil. Moreover, the amount of emulsified water in 5 g of PDMS solution is as high as 35 g, and the skeleton of the prepared PDMS sponge is still in intact. This method is cost-effective, rapid, and easily scaled up. The water contact angle of the obtained PDMS sponge is 141.9 ± 1°, and the absorption capacities of the sponges are 13.5-33.3 g g^-1 for various organic solvents. The PDMS sponge only needed 0.069 MPa force to realize the compression ratio of 90%, which it still maintained after over 50 cycles of compression. In addition, the porous PDMS sponge exhibited an excellent oil absorption and an outstanding reusability, which were potentially useful in water purification.

Fabrication of Green Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic Wood Flour for Efficient Oil Separation from Water

The removal of oil from waste water is gaining increasing attention. In this study, a novel synthesis method of green superhydrophobic/superoleophilic wood flour is proposed using the deposition of nano–zinc oxide (nZnO) aggregated on the fiber surface and the subsequent hydrophobic modification of octadecanoic acid. The as-prepared wood flour displayed great superhydrophobicity and synchronous superoleophilicity properties with the water contact angle (WCA) of 156° and oil contact angle (OCA) of 0° for diesel oil. Furthermore, the as-prepared wood flour possessed an excellent stability, probably due to the strong adhesion of nZnO, which aggregates to the fiber surface of wood flour with the action of glutinous polystyrene. The maximum adsorption capacity of as-prepared wood flour was 20.81 g/g for engine oil, which showed that the as-prepared wood flour is a potential candidate as an efficient oil adsorbent in the field of water-oil separation. Moreover, it has good chemical steadiness and environmental durability. Taken together, all the information acquired from this research could be valuable in evaluating the potential of as-prepared wood flour as a competitive and sustainable oil-water separation material.
