Tuning the Wettability of a Thin Polymer Film by Gradually Changing the Geometry of Nanoscale Pore Edges

Water vapor induced self-assembly of islands/honeycomb structure by secondary phase separation in polystyrene solution with bimodal molecular weight distribution

The formation of complex structures in thin films is of interest in many fields. Segregation of polymer chains of different molecular weights is a well-known process. However, here, polystyrene with bimodal molecular weight distribution, but no additional chemical modification was used. It was proven that at certain conditions, the phase separation occurred between two fractions of bimodal polystyrene/methyl ethyl ketone solution. The films were prepared by spin-coating, and the segregation between polystyrene phases was investigated by force spectroscopy. Next, water vapour induced secondary phase separation was investigated. The introduction of moist airflow induced the self-assembly of the lower molecular weight into islands and the heavier fraction into a honeycomb. As a result, an easy, fast, and effective method of obtaining island/honeycomb morphologies was demonstrated. The possible mechanisms of the formation of such structures were discussed.

Tuning the mechanical properties and degradation properties of polydioxanone isothermal annealing

Polydioxanone (PPDO) is synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of p-dioxanone, using stannous octoate as the catalyst. The polarized optical micrograph (POM) shows thes pherulite growth rate of PPDO decreases with an increase in the isothermal crystallization temperature. PPDO is compression-molded into bars, and PPDO bars are subjected to isothermal annealing at a range of temperatures (Ta = 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 °C), and correspond to three different annealing times (ta = 1h, 2h, 3h). The effect on PPDO is investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With an increase in Ta and ta, the grain size and the degree of crystallinity also increase. Meanwhile, the tensile strength is significantly improved. The PPDO bars (90 °C, 2 h) reach the maximum crystallinity (57.21%) and the maximum tensile strength (41.1 MPa). Interestingly, the heat treatment process does not result in serious thermal degradation. It is observed that the hydrolytic degradation of the annealed PPDO is delayed to some extent. Thus, annealed PPDO might have potential applications, particularly in the fields of orthopedic fixation and tissue engineering.

Internal nanocrystalline structure and stiffness alterations of electrospun polycaprolactone-based mats after six months of in vitro degradation. An atomic force microscopy assay

Biodegradable electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications have been extensively studied as they can provide attractive open-worked architecture resembling natural extracellular matrix, with tunable physical and mechanical properties enhancing positive cellular response. For this purpose, electrospun mats were tested in terms of morphology, mechanical and physical properties, degradation kinetics and related phenomena occurring in micro- and nanoscale. However, detailed description of internal nanostructures of electrospun mats and their changes related to in vitro degradation is still missing. In this manuscript, we report qualitative and quantitative evaluation of internal lamellar nanostructure of electrospun fibrous scaffolds made of pristine polycaprolactone and composite with polymeric matrix and nanoceramic (hydroxyapatite) filler during in vitro degradation. Morphological and mechanical studies performed with an atomic force microscope were followed by scanning electron microscope imaging and X-Ray diffraction. The results suggest degradation-dependent alteration of both organization and thickness of nano-scaled lamellas recorded with atomic force microscope. Moreover, changes of the material's internal structure were followed by enhanced stiffness and higher crystallinity of electrospun fibers.
