Chain and Segmental Dynamics in Polymer–Nanoparticle Composites with High Nanoparticle Loading

Ion Conductivity in Salt-Doped Polymers: Combined Effects of Temperature and Salt Concentration

We construct a coarse-grained molecular dynamics model based on poly(ethylene oxide) and lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide salt to examine the combined effects of temperature and salt concentration on the transport properties. Salt doping notably slows the dynamics of polymer chains and reduces ion diffusivity, resulting in a glass transition temperature increase proportional to the salt concentration. The polymer diffusion is shown to be well represented by a modified Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman (M-VFT) equation that accounts for both the temperature and salt concentration dependence. Furthermore, we find that, at any temperature, the concentration dependence of the conductivity is well described by the product of its infinite dilution value and a correction factor accounting for the reduced segmental mobility with increasing salt concentration. These results highlight the important role of polymer segmental mobility in the salt concentration dependence of ion conductivity for temperatures near and above the glass transition.

Capillary filling dynamics of polymer melts in a bicontinuous nanoporous scaffold

Polymer infiltrated nanoporous gold is prepared by infiltrating polymer melts into a bicontinuous, nanoporous gold (NPG) scaffold. Polystyrene (PS) films with molecular weights (Mw) from 424 to 1133 kDa are infiltrated into a NPG scaffold (∼120 nm), with a pore radius (Rp) and pore volume fraction of 37.5 nm and 50%, respectively. The confinement ratios (Γ=RgRp) range from 0.47 to 0.77, suggesting that the polymers inside the pores are moderately confined. The time for PS to achieve 80% infiltration (τ80%) is determined using in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry at 150 °C. The kinetics of infiltration scales weaker with Mw, τ80%∝Mw1.30±0.20, than expected from bulk viscosity Mw3.4. Furthermore, the effective viscosity of the PS melt inside NPG, inferred from the Lucas-Washburn model, is reduced by more than one order of magnitude compared to the bulk. Molecular dynamics simulation results are in good agreement with experiments predicting scaling as Mw1.4. The reduced dependence of Mw and the enhanced kinetics of infiltration are attributed to a reduction in chain entanglement density during infiltration and a reduction in polymer-wall friction with increasing polymer molecular weight. Compared to the traditional approach involving adding discrete particles into the polymer matrix, these studies show that nanocomposites with higher loading can be readily prepared, and that kinetics of infiltration are faster due to polymer confinement inside pores. These films have potential as actuators when filled with stimuli-responsive polymers as well as polymer electrolyte and fuel cell membranes.

Entanglements via Slip Springs with Soft, Coarse-Grained Models for Systems Having Explicit Liquid-Vapor Interfaces

Recent advances in nano-rheology require that new techniques and models be developed to precisely describe the equilibrium and non-equilibrium characteristics of entangled polymeric materials and their interfaces at a molecular level. In this study, a slip-spring (SLSP) model is proposed to capture the dynamics of entangled polymers at interfaces, including those between liquids, liquids and vapors, and liquids and solids. The SLSP model employs a highly coarse-grained approach, which allows for comprehensive simulations of entire nano-rheological characterization systems using a particle-level description. The model relies on many-body dissipative particle dynamics (MDPD) non-bonded interactions, which permit explicit description of liquid-vapor interfaces; a compensating potential is introduced to ensure an unbiased representation of the shape of the liquid-vapor interface within the SLSP model. The usefulness of the proposed MDPD + SLSP approach is illustrated by simulating a capillary breakup rheometer (CaBR) experiment, in which a liquid droplet splits into two segments under the influence of capillary forces. We find that the predictions of the MDPD + SLSP model are consistent with experimental measurements and theoretical predictions. The proposed model is also verified by comparison to the results of explicit molecular dynamics simulations of an entangled polymer melt using a Kremer-Grest chain representation, both at equilibrium and far from equilibrium. Taken together, the model and methods presented in this study provide a reliable framework for molecular-level interpretation of high-polymer dynamics in the presence of interfaces.

Polymer solution structure and dynamics within pores of hexagonally close-packed nanoparticles

Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we examine structure and dynamics of polymer solutions under confinement within the pores of a hexagonally close-packed (HCP) nanoparticle system with nanoparticle diameter fifty times that of the polymer Kuhn segment size. We model a condition where the polymer chain is in a good solvent (i.e., polymer-polymer interaction is purely repulsive and polymer-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions are attractive) and the polymer-nanoparticle and solvent-nanoparticle interactions are purely repulsive. We probe three polymer lengths (N = 10, 114, and 228 Kuhn segments) and three solution concentrations (1, 10, and 25%v) to understand how the polymer chain conformations and chain center-of-mass diffusion change under confinement within the pores of the HCP nanoparticle structure from those seen in bulk. The known trend of bulk polymer R_g² decreasing with increasing concentration no longer holds when confined in the pores of HCP nanoparticle structure; for example, for the 114-mer, the HCP 〈R_g²〉 at 1%v concentration is lower than HCP 〈R_g²〉 at 10%v concentration. The 〈R_g²〉 of the 114-mer and 228-mer exhibit the largest percent decline going from bulk to HCP at the 1%v concentration and the smallest percent decline at the 25%v concentration. We also provide insight into how the confinement ratio (CR) of polymer chain size to pore size within tetrahedral and octahedral pores in the HCP arrangement of nanoparticles affects the chain conformation and diffusion at various concentrations. At the same concentration, the N = 114 has significantly more movement between pores than the N = 228 chains. For the N = 114 polymer, the diffusion between pores (i.e., inter-pore diffusion) accelerates the overall diffusion rate for the confined HCP system while for the N = 228 polymer, the polymer diffusion in the entire HCP is dominated by the diffusion within the tetrahedral or octahedral pores with minor contributions from inter-pore diffusion. These findings augment the fundamental understanding of macromolecular diffusion through large, densely packed nanoparticle assemblies and are relevant to research focused on fabrication of polymer composite materials for chemical separations, storage, optics, and photonics. We perform coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to understand structure and dynamics of polymer solutions under confinement within hexagonal close packed nanoparticles with radii much larger than the polymer chain's bulk radius of gyration.

Screening confinement of entanglements: Role of a self-propelling end inducing ballistic chain reptation

Synthetic and natural nanomaterials with self-propelling mechanisms continue to be explored to boost chain mobility beyond normal reptation in the crowded environments of entangled chains. Here we employ scaling theory and numerical simulations to demonstrate that activating one chain end of a singular or isolated chain boosts entanglement-constrained chain reptation from the one-dimensional diffusive mobility as described by the de Gennes-Edwards-Doi model to ballistic motion along the entanglement tube contour. The active chain is effectively screened from the constraint of entanglements on length scales exceeding the tube size.

Decoding polymer self-dynamics using a two-step approach

The self-correlation function and corresponding self-intermediate scattering function in Fourier space are important quantities for describing the molecular motions of liquids. This work draws attention to a largely overlooked issue concerning the analysis of these space-time density-density correlation functions of polymers. We show that the interpretation of non-Gaussian behavior of polymers is generally complicated by intrachain averaging of distinct self-dynamics of different segments. By the very nature of the mathematics involved, the averaging process not only conceals critical dynamical information, but also contributes to the observed non-Gaussian dynamics. To fully expose this issue and provide a thorough benchmark of polymer self-dynamics, we perform analyses of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of linear and ring polymer melts as well as several theoretical models using a "two-step" approach, where interchain and intrachain averagings of segmental self-dynamics are separated. While past investigations primarily focused on the average behavior, our results indicate that a more nuanced approach to polymer self-dynamics is clearly required.

The Interplay of Polymer Bridging and Entanglement in Toughening Polymer-Infiltrated Nanoparticle Films

Polymer-nanoparticle composite films (PNCFs) with high loadings of nanoparticles (NPs) (>50 vol %) have applications in multiple areas, and an understanding of their mechanical properties is essential for their broader use. The high-volume fraction and small size of the NPs lead to physical confinement of the polymers that can drastically change the properties of polymers relative to the bulk. We investigate the fracture behavior of a class of highly loaded PNCFs prepared by polymer infiltration into NP packings. These polymer-infiltrated nanoparticle films (PINFs) have applications as multifunctional coatings and membranes and provide a platform to understand the behavior of polymers that are highly confined. Here, the extent of confinement in PINFs is tuned from 0.1 to 44 and the fracture toughness of PINFs is increased by up to a factor of 12 by varying the molecular weight of the polymers over 3 orders of magnitude and using NPs with diameters ranging from 9 to 100 nm. The results show that brittle, low molecular weight (MW) polymers can significantly toughen NP packings, and this toughening effect becomes less pronounced with increasing NP size. In contrast, high MW polymers capable of forming interchain entanglements are more effective in toughening large NP packings. We propose that confinement has competing effects of polymer bridging increasing toughness and chain disentanglement decreasing toughness. These findings provide insight into the fracture behavior of confined polymers and will guide the development of mechanically robust PINFs as well as other highly loaded PNCFs.

Designing high performance polymer nanocomposites by incorporating robustness-controlled polymeric nanoparticles: insights from molecular dynamics

Introducing polymeric nanoparticles into polymer matrices is an interesting topic, and the robustness of the polymeric nanoparticles is crucial for the properties of the polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). In this study, by incorporating star-shaped polymeric nanoparticles (SSPNs) into the polymer, the effect of the sphericity (η) and arm length (L) of the SSPNs on the mechanical properties of PNCs is systematically investigated, using a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, the linear and spherical nanoparticles (NPs) are compared with SSPNs by fixing the approximate diameter and mass fraction of the NPs. The radial distribution function, the second virial coefficient, mean-squared displacement, bond autocorrelation function, and primitive path analysis are employed to systematically characterize the structure and dynamics of these new PNCs. It is found that the dispersion of the NPs is enhanced with the increase of η, and the entanglement density reaches maximum, which both contribute to the greatest mechanical reinforcing effect. More significantly, it is found that the classical Payne effect, namely the storage as a function of the strain amplitude, decreases remarkably, and with a much smaller loss factor for these SSPN filled polymer nanocomposites, compared to conventional PNCs filled with rigid NPs. Furthermore, the change of the arm length of the SSPNs is found to exhibit the same effect on the mechanical and viscoelastic properties, as the variation of the number of the arms. In general, this work shows that these new SSPN filled polymer nanocomposites can exceed conventional PNCs, by manipulating the robustness of the SSPNs using, for example, the number and length of the arms. This research may provide guidelines for the investigation of the structure-property relationships of the topological structure of polymeric nanoparticles.

Kinetics of high density functional polymer nanocomposite formation by tuning enthalpic and entropic barriers

High density functional polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) with high degree of dispersion have recently emerged as novel materials for various thermo-mechanical, optical and electrical applications. The key challenge is to attain a high loading while maintaining reasonable dispersion to attain maximum possible benefits from the functional nanoparticle additives. Here, we report a facile method to prepare polymer grafted nanoparticle (PGNP)-based high density functional polymer nanocomposites using thermal activation of a high density PGNP monolayer to overcome entropic or enthalpic barriers to insertion of PGNPs into the underlying polymer films. We monitor the temperature-dependent kinetics of penetration of a high density PGNP layer and correlate the penetration time to the effective enthalpic/entropic barriers. The experimental results are corroborated by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Repeated application of the methodology to insert nanoparticles by appropriate control over temperature, time and graft-chain properties can lead to enhanced densities of loading in the PNC. Our method can be engineered to produce a wide range of high density polymer nanocomposite membranes for various possible applications including gas separation and water desalination.
