Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding Analysis of Tin(II) Dihalide and Cyclopentadienyltin(II) Halide (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Complexes

Fluoride Abstraction Induced by Tris(pentafluoroethyl)difluorophosphorane: A Convenient Way to Synthesize Cationic N-Heterocyclic Carbene- and Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene-Ligated Copper Alkyne and Arene Complexes

We herein report the convenient synthesis of different N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)- and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (cAAC)-ligated copper cations using the weakly coordinating tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate counterion (FAP anion, [(C2F5)3PF3]-). The reaction of the fluorido complexes [(carbene)CuF] (carbene = NHC, cAACMe) 2a-2f and the tris(pentafluoroethyl)difluorophosphorane (C2F5)3PF2 in the presence of alkynes or arenes led to fluoride transfer from Cu to the phosphorane with formation of the cationic transition metal complexes [(carbene)Cu(L)]+ and the weakly coordinating counteranion [(C2F5)3PF3]- (FAP). Using this method, the complexes [(IDipp)Cu(L)]+FAP- (IDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene; L = PhC≡CPh, 4d; PhC≡CMe, 5d), [(cAACMe)Cu(L)]+FAP- (cAACMe = 1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene; L = PhC≡CPh, 4f; PhC≡CMe, 5f), [(SIDipp)Cu(C6Me6)]+FAP- (6e), (SIDipp = 1,3-bis(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-imidazolidine-2-ylidene), and [(cAACMe)Cu(C6Me6)]+FAP- (6f) have been synthesized and characterized. The complexes [(IDipp)Cu(C6Me6)]+FAP- (6d) and [(cAACMe)Cu(C6Me6)]+FAP- (6f) have been used as catalysts for the copper(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition of benzyl azide to terminal alkynes.

From Carbene-Dithiolene Zwitterion Mediated B-H Bond Activation to BH3·SMe2-Assisted Boron-Boron Bond Formation

The 1:1 reaction of the carbene-stabilized dithiolene zwitterion 1 with BH3·SMe2 gave the dithiolene-based hydroborane 2 and the doubly hydrogen-capped CAAC species 3 via hydride-coupled reverse electron transfer processes. The mechanism of this transformation was probed computationally using density functional theory. The subsequent 2:1 reaction of 2 with 1 resulted in 4 and 3, suggesting that 1 can mediate the B-H bond activation not only for BH3 but also for monohydroboranes. In the presence of BH3·SMe2, 2 was unexpectedly converted to the corresponding diborane(4) complex 5 through a dehydrocoupling reaction at an elevated temperature.

Neutral and Cationic Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene Cyclic Alkyl Amino Carbene (CAAC) Complexes for Olefin Metathesis

The first neutral and cationic Mo imido alkylidene cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) complexes of the general formulae [Mo(N-Ar)(CHCMe2 Ph)(X)2 (CAAC)] and [Mo(N-Ar)(CHCMe2 Ph)(X)(CAAC)][B(ArF )4 ] (X=Br, Cl, OTf, OC6 F5 ; CAAC=1-(2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 )-3,3,5,5-tetramethyltetrahydropyrrol-2-ylidene) have been synthesized from molybdenum imido bishalide alkylidene DME precursors. Different combinations of the imido and "X" ligands have been employed to understand synthetic peculiarities. Selected complexes have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Due to the pronounced σ-donor/π-acceptor characteristics of CAACs, the corresponding neutral and cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene CAAC complexes do not require the presence of stabilizing donor ligands such as nitriles. Calculations on the PBE0-D3BJ/def2-TZVP level for PBE0-D3BJ/def2-SVP optimized geometries revealed partial charges at molybdenum similar to the corresponding molybdenum imido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes with a slightly higher polarization of the molybdenum alkylidene bond in the CAAC complexes. All cationic complexes have been tested in olefin metathesis reactions and showed improved activity compared to the analogous NHC complexes for hydrocarbon-based substrates, allowing for turnover numbers (TONs) up to 9500 even at room temperature. Some Mo imido alkylidene CAAC complexes are tolerant towards functional groups like thioethers and sulfonamides.

Phosphanyl-substituted tin half-sandwich complexes†

Phosphanyl-substituted tin(ii) half sandwich complexes are reported. Due to the Lewis acidic tin center and Lewis basic phosphorous atom they form head-to-tail dimers. Their properties and reactivities were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore, related transition metal complexes of these species are presented.

A crystalline cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene with a 1,1'-ferrocenylene backbone

Cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes with a 1,1'-ferrocenylene backbone (fcCAACs) are established as an original family by the preparation of a crystalline congener. The C_carbene bond angle is unprecedentedly wide for a CAAC, causing an exceptionally pronounced ambiphilicity. The redox-active backbone opens the door to unconventional metalloradicals and oligoradicals.

Activation of Ammonia by a Carbene-Stabilized Dithiolene Zwitterion

A carbene-stabilized dithiolene zwitterion (3) activates ammonia, affording 4^• and 5, through both single-electron transfer (SET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). Reaction products were characterized spectroscopically and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The mechanism of the formation of 4^• and 5 was probed by experimental and computational methods. This discovery is the first example of metal-free ammonia activation via HAT.

Bis(di-tert-butylindenyl)tetrelocenes

The synthesis and characterization of bis(di-tert-butylindenyl) germanium(II), tin(II) and lead(II) complexes are reported, which includes the first structurally authenticated example of a bis(indenyl)germanocene. The species were studied in detail in solution and in the solid, which includes single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy, as well as Mössbauer spectroscopy of the tin compound.

Novel Heteroleptic Tin(II) Complexes Capable of Forming SnO and SnO2 Thin Films Depending on Conditions Using Chemical Solution Deposition

A new heteroleptic complex series of tin was synthesized by the salt metathesis reaction of SnX₂ (X = Cl, Br, and I) with aminoalkoxide and various N-alkoxy-functionalized carboxamide ligands. The complexes, [ClSn(dmamp)]₂ (1), [BrSn(dmamp)]₂ (2), and [ISn(dmamp)]₂ (3), were prepared from the salt metathesis reaction of SnX₂ with one equivalent of dmamp; [Sn(dmamp)(empa)]₂ (4), [Sn(dmamp)(mdpa)]₂ (5), and [Sn(dmamp)(edpa)]₂ (6) were prepared via the salt metathesis reaction using complex 2 with one equivalent of N-alkoxy-functionalized carboxamide ligand. Complexes 1-5 displayed dimeric molecular structures with tin metal centers interconnected by μ₂-O bonding via the alkoxy oxygen atom. The molecular structures of complexes 1-5 showed distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries with lone pair electrons in the equatorial position. Using complex 6 as a tin precursor, SnO _x films were deposited by chemical solution deposition (CSD) and subsequent post-deposition annealing (PDA) at high temperatures. SnO and SnO₂ films were selectively obtained under controlled PDA atmospheres of argon and oxygen, respectively. The SnO films featured a tetragonal romarchite structure with high crystallinity and a preferred growth orientation along the (101) plane. They also exhibited a lower transmittance of >52% at 400 nm due to an optical band gap of 2.9 eV. In contrast, the SnO₂ films exhibited a tetragonal cassiterite crystal structure and an extremely high transmittance of >97% at 400 nm was observed with an optical band gap of 3.6 eV.

Carbene-Stabilized Dithiolene (L0 ) Zwitterions

A series of reactions between Lewis bases and an imidazole-based dithione dimer (1) has been investigated. Both cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) (2) and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) (4), in addition to N-heterocyclic silylene (NHSi) (6), demonstrate the capability to cleave the sulphur-sulphur bonds in 1, giving carbene-stabilized dithiolene (L⁰ ) zwitterions (3 and 5) and a spirocyclic silicon-dithiolene compound (7), respectively. The bonding nature of 3, 5, and 7 are probed by both experimental and theoretical methods.

Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Lanthanide Amides: Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic Selective Hydrosilylation of Alkenes

The first examples of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) lanthanide (Ln) complexes were synthesized from the reaction of CAAC with Yb[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ and Eu[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF)₂ (THF = tetrahydrofuran). The structures of (CAAC)Yb[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ (2) and (CAAC)Eu[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(THF) (3) were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Density functional theory calculations of 2 revealed the predominantly ionic bond between the Ln ion and CAAC. Complex 3 enabled catalytic hydrosilylation of aryl- and silylalkenes with primary and secondary silanes in high yields and Markovnikov selectivity.

Mechanistic elucidation of monoalkyltin(iv)-catalyzed esterification

Monoalkyltin(iv) complexes are well-known catalysts for esterification reactions and polyester formation, yet the mode of operation of these Lewis acidic complexes is still unknown. Here, we report on mechanistic studies of n-butylstannoic acid in stoichiometric and catalytic reactions, analyzed by NMR, IR and MS techniques. While the chemistry of n-butyltin(iv) carboxylates is dominated by formation of multinuclear tin assemblies, we found that under catalytically relevant conditions only monomeric n-BuSn(OAc)3 and dimeric (n-BuSnOAc2OEt)2 are present. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide support for a mononuclear mechanism, where n-BuSn(OAc)3 and dimeric (n-BuSnOAc2OEt)2 are regarded as off-cycle species, and suggest that carbon-oxygen bond breaking is the rate-determining step.

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Disiloxa[3]tetrelocenophanes

Tetramethyldisiloxa[3]metallocenophanes of the heavy group 14 elements germanium, 2a, tin, 2b, and lead, 2c, (tetrelocenophanes) have been synthesized by the reaction of dilithiated ligand, 1, with the corresponding element(II) chloride. The plumbocenophane, 2c, forms one-dimensional coordination polymers in the solid state, while the germanocenophane, 2a, and the stannocenophane, 2b, are monomeric. Furthermore, the reactivity of the stannocenophane, 2b, and the plumbocenophane, 2c, toward N-heterocyclic carbenes was explored. Although the coordination of carbene is reversible in solution at room temperature, the corresponding carbene complexes, 3a,b, could be structurally characterized, illustrating the Lewis acidity of the central atom in these metallocenophanes.

A bis(aluminocenophane) with a short aluminum–aluminum single bond

A bis(aluminocenophane) with a remarkably short Al–Al single bond, which was studied in detail by DFT calculations, is presented.
