Controlling Keto–Enol Tautomerism of Ureidopyrimidinone to Generate a Single-Quadruple AADD-DDAA Dimeric Array

Organic-Cation Modulated Assembly Behaviors of a Ureidopyrimidone-Grafting Cluster

Ureidopyrimidone (UPy) is an important building block for constructing functional supramolecular polymers and soft materials based on their characteristic quadruple hydrogen bonds. While the evidence from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for the existence of linear hydrogen bonding has still been absent up to now. To obtain the crystals of UPy-containing molecules with high quality, enhanced rigidity and crystallinity are expected. Herein, an inorganic Anderson-Evans type cluster [Mn(OH₎₆Mo₆O₁₈]^3-, which can provide suitable stiffness and charge, is used as a linker to covalently anchor two UPy units. The prepared organic-inorganic polyanion with three negative charges has a linear architecture, which is prone to form an infinite one-dimensional structure based on the supramolecular forces. The results indicate that the combination models of UPy units can be conveniently modulated by organic counter cations with different sizes, and therefore three unreported models are observed under various conditions. The present study gives a unique understanding of the intermolecular interactions in UPy-based supramolecular polymers and also provides a simple tuning method, which benefits the construction of functional materials and the adjustment of their properties.

Competition of Hydrogen Bonds and Coordinate Bonds Induces a Reversible Crystal Transformation

Achieving reversible molecular crystal transformation between coordinate aggregates and hydrogen bonded assemblies has been a challenging task because coordinate bonds are generally much stronger than hydrogen bonds. Recently, we have reported the incorporation of silver ions into the cyanuric acid-melamine (CAM) network, resulting in the formation of a 1D coordination polymer (crystal 1) through forming the κ₁N-Ag-κ₂N coordination bonds. In this work, we find crystal 1 will undergo reversible transformation to hydrogen bonded coordinate units (crystal 2) through the breaking of coordinate chains and then the addition of CAM hydrogen bonding motifs into the framework. Crystal 2 presents a pseudohexagonal arrangement comprised of the κ₁N-Ag-κ₂N units connected by two sets of the triple hydrogen bonds, which extends two-dimensionally and stacks into a layer-structured crystal. Light was shed on the tautomerization of CA and M ligands associated with the crystal transformations using single crystal X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy by analyzing the bond lengths and vibrations. We also highlight that photoluminescence can be a useful tool to probe the tautomer conversions of conjugated molecules. Furthermore, crystal 1 demonstrates high flexibility and can be bent over 180° and recover to its original shape after stress release. Crystal 2, on the contrary, is brittle and shows distinct mechanical anisotropy along different crystal orientations, as unveiled by nanoindentation measurements. The elastic modulus is well correlated with the chemical bonding strength along each orientation, and it is noteworthy that the contribution of the triple hydrogen bonds is comparable to that of the coordination bonds.

Photoinduced Irreversible Intramolecular Proton Transfer of Arnebinones B, D, and E: The Case of Photoenolization at the p-Benzoquinone-CH2/CH-π System

Arnebinones B, E, and D (1-3) have been found to be sensitive to light, generating complex and diverse proton transfer products when triggered by light. A unique two-step irreversible intramolecular proton transfer of 1 produced five scalemic mixtures, of which four possessed intriguing dual planar chirality. The unprecedented orientation epimerization equilibrium of the intra-annular double bond was first observed and researched in the homologous meroterpenoids by HPLC monitoring and DFT calculations. A "p-benzoquinone-CH₂/CH-π" moiety in the structure was the common key feature for the occurrence of this type of photoenolization reaction. The product transformation processes and universality of this photoinduced irreversible proton transfer reaction were analyzed together with the cytotoxic activities of arnebinones B, D, and E, and their photoreaction products.
