Abstract
Investigating organic reactions to synthesize novel molecules that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics is becoming a research hotspot. Herein, we develop a one-pot phosphinylation/cyclization reaction between propynolaldehydes and diarylphosphine oxides to generate isobenzofuran-substituted phosphine oxides (IBFPOs) displaying AIE properties. Such a reaction possesses benefits such as metal-free synthesis, simple operation and wide substrate applicability. Further structural modifications of the products have been implemented through the palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira reaction, Ullmann coupling and Diels-Alder addition. Furthermore, these AIE luminogens (AIEgens), which have satisfactory quantum yields and tunable emission covering the entire visible region, can be employed for the cell imaging of lipid droplets in HeLa cells. Notably, quantitative evaluation of the phototherapy effect demonstrates that one of these presented AIEgens, namely IBFPO-3j, displays high type-I reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency, enabling its effective application in photodynamic therapy in a hypoxic environment.

Abstract
A solid-state method was developed for generating diarylisonaphthofurans from 1,3-diaryl-1,3-dihydronaphthofuranols. The generated reactive molecules were stable in the solid state and could be stored without any extra precautions. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a typical quinoidal structure. Furthermore, the mechanochemical Diels-Alder reaction of 1,3-diarylisonaphthofurans with epoxynaphthalenes afforded synthetically attractive diepoxypentacenes.

Abstract
Herein, a simple and practical method for generating isoacenofuran, a new π-extended quinoidal building block, was developed. A three-step protocol involving double nucleophilic additions of alkynyllithiums to acene-2,3-dicarbaldehyde, mono-oxidation, and acid-promoted cyclization enables the generation of the target molecule, which is trapped by a dienophile to produce highly condensed acenequinones. Further transformations by double nucleophilic additions of alkynyllithium to hexacenequinone, followed by reductive aromatization, produce tetraalkynylhexacenes with a remarkably higher stability than that of the previously reported substituted hexacenes.

Abstract
Although polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) and their analogues have gained great progress in the fields of organic photoelectronic materials, the in-depth study on present PCHs is still limited to hexacene or below because longer PCHs are insoluble, unstable, and tediously synthesized. Very recently, various strategies including on-surface synthesis are developed to address these issues and many higher novel PCHs are constructed. Therefore, it is necessary to review these advances. Here, the recent synthetic approach, basic physicochemical properties, single-crystal packing behaviors, and potential applications of the linearly fused PCHs (higher than hexacene), including acenes or π-extended acenes with fused six-membered benzenoid rings and other four-membered, five-membered or even seven-membered and eight-membered fused compounds, are summarized.

Abstract
An efficient synthetic route to 5,6,11,12-tetrakis(arylethynyl)tetracenes, new π-extended rubrene derivatives, was developed by means of [2+4] cycloaddition of dialkynylnaphthalyne and dialkynylisobenzofuran. Importantly, two alkynyl groups introduced into the aryne exerts a significant effect in lowering the LUMO energy, allowing practical access to sterically overcrowded polycyclic structures through an efficient HOMO-LUMO interaction. Study on the potential reactivity inherent in the peri-ethynyl-substituted tetracenes revealed several interesting reactivities. X-ray analysis of these new π-extended derivatives showed distorted structures to reduce steric repulsion due to the existence of the substituents at the peri-positions.

Abstract
Acenes, heteroacenes, conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (collectively referred to in this review as conjugated polycyclic molecules, CPMs) have fascinated chemists since they were first isolated and synthesized in the mid 19th century. Most recently, these compounds have shown significant promise as the active components in organic devices (e.g., solar cells, thin-film transistors, light-emitting diodes, etc.), and, since 2001, a plethora of publications detail synthetic strategies to produce CPMs. In this review, we discuss reductive aromatization, reductive dearomatization, and elimination/extrusion reactions used to form CPMs. After a brief discussion on early methods to synthesize CPMs, we detail the use of reagents used for the reductive (de)aromatization of precursors containing 1,4-diols/diethers, including SnCl2 and iodide (I- ). Extension of these methods to carbomers and cumulenes is briefly discussed. We then describe low-valent metal species used to reduce endoxides to CPMs, and discuss the methods to directly reduce acenediones and acenones to the respective acene. In the final section, we describe methods used to affect aromatization to the desired CPM via extrusion of small, volatile molecules.
