Abstract
A divergent copper-catalyzed defluorinative C(sp3)-C(sp2) cross-coupling of gem-diborylalkanes with polyfluoroarenes has been developed through a synergistic ligand/base-controlled strategy. Various fluorinated aromatic compounds were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. Late-stage modification of bioactive molecules, gram-scale reaction, and versatile downstream derivatization demonstrated the application value of this protocol. Preliminary mechanistic studies hinted that this transformation is a SNAr mechanism rather than a radical pathway.

Abstract
Polyfluoroaryl ethers represent an important framework of biologically active molecules and materials. Owing to the strong bond dissociation energy of C-F bond, selectivity and other issues, transition metal-catalyzed synthesis of polyfluoroaryl ethers from perfluoroarenes via the activation of C-F bond is challenging and underdeveloped, as compared to the well-documented C-O bond formation starting from aryl iodides, aryl bromides or aryl chlorides. Herein, an unprecedented Pd-catalyzed defluorinative etherification for the synthesis of polyfluoroaryl ether skeletons using hydrobenzoxazoles as phenol surrogate, has been reported. The substrate scope for this protocol is broad, with respect to hydrobenzoxazoles and perfluoroarenes, under mild reaction conditions. More importantly, challenging alkenyl and alkynyl substituted polyfluoroarenes could be successfully used as the cou-pling component for Pd-catalyzed etherification reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the reaction mechanism, which suggested that oxidative addition between polyfluorobenzene and Pd(0) constituted the rate-determining step.

Abstract
Significant progress has been made in the synthesis of diverse ketals through a palladium-catalyzed reaction involving allylic gem-difluorides and various phenols or alcohols. This methodology facilitates double ipso-defluoroetherification of allylic gem-difluorides, resulting in high product yields with excellent regioselectivity. The reactions were conducted under mild conditions and exhibited outstanding tolerance to a wide range of functional groups. Notably, this approach overcomes the traditional limitation of palladium-catalyzed processes, where nucleophiles typically target the common C-1 position of allylic gem-difluorides, enabling selective functionalization at the rare C-3 position instead.

Abstract
Use of the branched N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand 1,3-bis(2,6-bis(3-methyl-1-(2-methylpropyl)butyl)phenyl)-4,5-dichloro-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazole-2-ylidene (DiMeIHeptCl) facilitated the stabilization of several relevant intermediates for Pd(NHC)-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling reactions. Complexes [Pd(DiMeIHeptCl)]2(μ-N2), [Pd(DiMeIHeptCl)]2(μ-η2-1,2-η2-4,5-C6H6), and Pd(DiMeIHeptCl)(pyridine), representing zerovalent Pd(NHC) bearing labile ligands, were isolated and structurally characterized, along with divalent PdCl(Ph)(DiMeIHeptCl) and PdCl(Ph)(DiMeIHeptCl)(n-propylamine). The former is a 14-electron Pd complex, which is stable under air and chromatography on silica gel or neutral alumina. One possible reason for this exceptional stability is the numerous dispersion interactions between the NHC alkyl chains and the Pd-Ph group. Detailed investigations of catalyst activation and oxidative addition confirmed that "Pd(NHC)" is formed from many known Pd(II)(NHC) precatalysts and provided activation rates for these different precatalysts.

Abstract
Controlling the transformation of versatile and reactive allenes is a considerable challenge. Herein, we report an efficient silylboronate-mediated cross-coupling reaction of organic fluorides with allenes to construct a series of sterically demanding α-ethynyl-containing all-carbon quaternary centers (ACQCs), using catalyst-free silyl-radical-relay reactions to selectively functionalize highly inert C-F bonds in organic fluorides. The key to the success of this transformation lies in the radical rearrangement of an in situ-generated allenyl radical to form a bulky tertiary propargyl radical; however, the transformation does not show efficiency when using the propargyl isomer directly. This unique reaction enables the cross-coupling of a tertiary carbon radical center with a C(sp2)-F bond or a benzylic C(sp3)-F bond. α-Ethynyl-containing ACQCs with (hetero)aromatic substituents and benzyl were efficiently synthesized in a single step using electronically and sterically diverse organic fluorides and allenes. The practical utility of this protocol is showcased by the late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules and the modification of a liquid crystalline material.

Abstract
Much progress has been made in the development of methods to both create compounds that contain C-F bonds and to functionalize C-F bonds. As such, C-F bonds are becoming common and versatile synthetic functional handles. This review summarizes the advantages of defluorinative functionalization reactions for small molecule synthesis. The coverage is organized by the type of carbon framework the fluorine is attached to for mono- and polyfluorinated motifs. The main challenges, opportunities and advances of defluorinative functionalization are discussed for each class of organofluorine. Most of the text focuses on case studies that illustrate how defluorofunctionalization can improve routes to synthetic targets or how the properties of C-F bonds enable unique mechanisms and reactions. The broader goal is to showcase the opportunities for incorporating and exploiting C-F bonds in the design of synthetic routes, improvement of specific reactions and advent of new methods.

Abstract
Herein, we present an unprecedented azine-limited C5-H polyfluoroarylation of 2-aminopyridines enabled by a transient and electron-deficient perfluoroaryl-Pd species via C-H/C-H coupling. The protocol further allows C3(5)-H polyfluoroarylation of 2-alkoxypyridines guided by sterics and electronics for the first time. The late-stage C-H functionalization of drugs, drug derivatives, and natural product derivatives and synthesis of C5-aryl drug derivatives further demonstrated the method's utility. The preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that the synergistic combination of the bulky yet electrophilic perfluoroaryl-Pd species and the partial nucleophilicity of the C5-position of 2-amino/alkoxy-pyridines is the origin of reactivity and selectivity. Importantly, the first experimental evidence for the role of diisopropyl sulfide is provided.

Abstract
The activation and transformation of C–F bonds in fluoro-aromatics is a highly desirable process in organic chemistry. It provides synthetic methods/protocols for the generation of organic compounds possessing single or multiple C–F bonds, and effective catalytic systems for further study of the activation mode of inert chemical bonds. Due to the high polarity of the C–F bond and it having the highest bond energy in organics, C–F activation often faces considerable academic challenges. In this mini-review, the important research achievements in the activation and transformation of aromatic C–F bond, catalyzed by transition metal and metal-free systems, are presented.

Abstract
Pd-catalyzed borylation of fluorobenzene was theoretically studied. DFT calculations revealed that the reaction occurs through an unprecedented 3 + 6-membered ring transition state, in which one LiHMDS (HMDS = hexamethyldisilazane) acts as a ligand and another LiHMDS is essential to provide Li···N and Li···F interactions, overcoming the large destabilization of the strong phenyl-F bond distortion. The characteristic feature of LiHMDS was elucidated by comparing it with HMDS and NaHMDS analogues.

Abstract
A catalytic selective C-F bond alkylation method for polyfluoroarene with glycinates and derivatives in the presence of a DavePhos-ligated Rh catalyst was developed. This method avoids the preactivation of alkylating reagents and provides an efficient and straightforward route to synthesize a series of polyfluoroaryl amino acids via C(sp3)-H functionalization. This reaction proceeds under mild conditions and exhibits high reactivity and excellent chemoselectivities. Meanwhile, the synthetic potential of this method was demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis, and further transformations proved the application value of the products as well.

Abstract
Selective C-F bond cleavage of polyfluoroarenes has attracted tremendous interest due to its promising applications in introducing fluorinated building blocks into organic molecules. However, it remains a challenge to achieve highly site-selective C-F bond cleavage because of the intrinsic inertness of the C-F bond and the difficulty in distinguishing specific C-F bonds on the aromatic ring. Herein we report an efficient nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reaction of polyfluoroarenes with Grignard reagents that employs MnFe-based bimetallic metal-organic coordination polymers (MOCPs) as recyclable and reusable heterogeneous catalysts. Significantly, in this reaction, the prepared MOCP (Mn-Fe) catalyst exhibited excellent activity in selective C-F bond cleavage and afforded a series of functionalized polyfluoroarenes in moderate to excellent yields (up to 96%). This work highlights the potential of MOCP catalysts to serve as a tunable platform in Lewis acid catalysis.

Abstract
Direct CAr-F arylation is effective and sustainable for synthesis of polyfluorobiaryls with different degrees of fluorination, which are important motifs in medical and material chemistry. However, with no aid of transition metals, the engagement of CAr-F bond activation has proved difficult. Herein, an unprecedented transition-metal-free strategy is reported for site-selective CAr-F arylation of polyfluoroarenes with simple (het)arenes. By merging N,N-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide)-catalyzed electrophotocatalytic reduction and anodic nitroxyl radical oxidation in an electrophotocatalytic cell, various polyfluoroaromatics (2F-6F and 8F), especially inactive partially fluorinated aromatics, undergo sacrificial-reagents-free C-F bond arylation with high regioselectivity, and the yields are comparable to those for reported transition-metal catalysis. This atom- and step-economic protocol features a paired electrocatalysis with organic mediators in both cathodic and anodic processes. The broad substrate scope and good functional-group compatibility highlight the merits of this operationally simple strategy. Moreover, the easy gram-scale synthesis and late-stage functionalization collectively advocate for the practical value, which would promote the vigorous development of fluorine chemistry.

Abstract
Methods to functionalize arenes and heteroarenes in a site-selective manner are highly sought after for rapidly constructing value-added molecules of medicinal, agrochemical, and materials interest. One effective approach is the site-selective cross-coupling of polyhalogenated arenes bearing multiple, but identical, halogen groups. Such cross-coupling reactions have proven to be incredibly effective for site-selective functionalization. However, they also present formidable challenges due to the inherent similarities in the reactivities of the halogen substituents. In this Review, we discuss strategies for site-selective cross-couplings of polyhalogenated arenes and heteroarenes bearing identical halogens, beginning first with an overview of the reaction types that are more traditional in nature, such as electronically, sterically, and directing-group-controlled processes. Following these examples is a description of emerging strategies, which includes ligand- and additive/solvent-controlled reactions as well as photochemically initiated processes.

Abstract
A chemoselective C(sp2)−C(sp2) coupling of sufficiently electron‐deficient fluorinated arenes and functionalized N‐aryl‐N’‐silyldiazenes as masked aryl nucleophiles is reported. The fluoride‐promoted transformation involves the in situ generation of the aryl nucleophile decorated with various sensitive functional groups followed by a stepwise nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr). These reactions typically proceed at room temperature within minutes. This catalytic process allows for the functionalization of both coupling partners, furnishing highly fluorinated biaryls in good yields.

Abstract
Within the framework of discovery chemistry, polyfluorination remains a synthetic challenge despite its ability to provide useful characteristics, such as a reduction in the number of hydrogen bond donors and metabolic stability. Coupling a reversal of this methodology with photocatalysis has been demonstrated to allow the rapid synthesis of previously difficult or impossible targets by starting with fluorines everywhere and selectively removing or functionalizing them. Herein, we demonstrate a novel method to synthesize 1,4-cyclohexadienes through a dearomative photocatalytic C-C coupling reaction. This allows for access to materials that are orthogonal to the selectivity of the Birch reaction and are more functional-group-tolerant. The reaction also allows the efficient synthesis of polyfluorinated cannabinoids. While the yields are modest, the access to the new chemical space provided by the reaction is unprecedented by any means. The trifluorinated analog of THC, 1-deoxy-1,2,4-trifluoro-THC, is synthesized, demonstrating the importance of discovery chemistry and the ability to explore otherwise unknown structure-activity relationships.

Abstract
The activation of a carbon-fluorine bond is one of the most challenging topics in modern synthetic organic chemistry due to their low reactivity compared to other carbon-halogen bonds. In this review, we present the recent developments since 2015 on cross-coupling reactions that form C-C bonds via cleavage of C(sp2 )-F bonds. Not only the conventional activation of C(sp2 )-F bonds, but also decarbonylative or carbonyl-retentive cleavage of C(acyl)-F bonds will be introduced. This paper mainly describes new protocols for the formation of C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ), C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ), and C(sp2 )-C(sp) bonds via transition-metal-catalyzed cleavage of C(sp2 )-F bonds.

Abstract
Catalytic methods that transform C-H bonds into C-X bonds are of paramount importance in synthesis. A particular focus has been the generation of organoboranes, organosilanes and organostannanes from simple hydrocarbons (X=B, Si, Sn). Despite the importance of organozinc compounds (X=Zn), their synthesis by the catalytic functionalisation of C-H bonds remains unknown. Herein, we show that a palladium catalyst and zinc hydride reagent can be used to transform C-H bonds into C-Zn bonds. The new catalytic C-H zincation protocol has been applied to a variety of arenes-including fluoroarenes, heteroarenes, and benzene-with high chemo- and regioselectivity. A mechanistic study shows that heterometallic Pd-Zn complexes play a key role in catalysis. The conclusions of this work are twofold; the first is that valuable organozinc compounds are finally accessible by catalytic C-H functionalisation, the second is that heterometallic complexes are intimately involved in bond-making and bond-breaking steps of C-H functionalisation.

Abstract
The "creativity" of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in terms of generating de novo molecular structures opened a novel paradigm in compound design, weaknesses (stability & feasibility issues of such structures) notwithstanding. Here we show that "creative" AI may be as successfully taught to enumerate novel chemical reactions that are stoichiometrically coherent. Furthermore, when coupled to reaction space cartography, de novo reaction design may be focused on the desired reaction class. A sequence-to-sequence autoencoder with bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory layers was trained on on-purpose developed "SMILES/CGR" strings, encoding reactions of the USPTO database. The autoencoder latent space was visualized on a generative topographic map. Novel latent space points were sampled around a map area populated by Suzuki reactions and decoded to corresponding reactions. These can be critically analyzed by the expert, cleaned of irrelevant functional groups and eventually experimentally attempted, herewith enlarging the synthetic purpose of popular synthetic pathways.

Abstract
The first photoredox-catalyzed defluoroborylation of polyfluoroarenes with NHC-BH3 has been facilely achieved at room temperature via a single-electron-transfer (SET)/radical addition pathway. This new strategy makes full use of the advantage of photoredox catalysis to generate the key boryl radical via direct activation of a B-H bond. Good functional group tolerance and high regioselectivity offer this protocol incomparable advantages in preparing a wide array of valuable polyfluoroarylboron compounds. Moreover, both computational and experimental studies were performed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Fluorinated organic compounds are produced in abundance by the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry, making such compounds attractive as building blocks for further functionalization. Unfortunately, activation of C(sp3)-F bond in saturated fluorocarbons, especially for aliphatic gem-difluoroalkanes, remains challenging. Here we describe the selective activation of inert C(sp3)-F bonds catalyzed by B(C6F5)3. In hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), chemically robust aliphatic gem-difluorides are converted in high yields to the corresponding substituted 2,2′,3,3′-tetrahydro-1,1′-spirobiindenes via a B(C6F5)3-catalyzed intramolecular cascade Friedel-Crafts cyclization, not requiring a silicon-based trapping reagent. However, in the absence of a hydrogen-bonding donor solvent such as HFIP, the aliphatic gem-difluorides preferentially engage in a defluorination/elimination process that provides monofluorinated alkenes in good yields. Furthermore, a series of substituted 1-alkyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indenes was obtained in high yield from the B(C6F5)3-catalyzed defluorinative cyclization of aliphatic secondary monofluorides in HFIP. The protocol could inspire development of a new class of main-group Lewis acid-catalyzed C(sp3)-F bond activation in general unactivated fluorocarbons. Abstract
The first example of phenylation of fluorobenzonitriles with the sodium salt of a benzonitrile radical anion in liquid ammonia is presented. The reaction regioselectivity corresponds to the ortho- and para-fluorine atom substitution in fluorobenzonitrile with the phenyl moiety of the benzonitrile radical anion and affords 2- and 4-cyanobiphenyls in 40-90% yields. 3-Methoxybenzonitrile as well as 1-cyanonaphthalene radical anions were also successfully subjected to this interaction forming 3'-methoxycyanobiphenyls and (1-naphthyl)benzonitriles, respectively. The radical anion acts as an ipso-C-nucleophile with consequent loss of the cyano group. The revealed new type of radical anion reactivity opens up the prospect of developing a general approach to fluorinated cyanobisarenes on the basis of an interaction of the cyanoarene radical anion with fluorinated substrates activated to aromatic nucleophilic substitution.

Abstract
Direct arylation polymerization (DArP) has enabled the more sustainable synthesis of conjugated polymers through the reduction of waste, elimination of toxic and hazardous byproducts, and through the reduction of overall synthetic steps. However, DArP methodologies have almost exclusively relied on the use of noble metal catalysts, such as those with Pd, counter to the efforts toward sustainability. Herein, we report the optimized synthesis of a flourinated arylene conjugated copolymer via DArP using a low-cost, sustainable copper catalyst. Through optimization of the polymerization conditions, we are able to lower the loading of the catalyst from 50 to 5 mol %. As an example, we are able to obtain molecular weights of 16.4 kDa, accompanied by a yield of 54%, with a loading of only 5 mol % for the Cu catalyst. The synthesized polymers were characterized using 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy, showing agreement with those previously prepared with a minimization or exclusion of defects. This work also demonstrates that Cu-catalyzed DArP methodologies can be compatible with substrates that do not possess directing groups, which can help to facilitate C-H functionalization, allowing for a broadening of substrate scope.
