Abstract
Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)-detecting electrochemical sensors are attractive in monitoring and diagnosing various physiological disorders of NADH abnormalities. The NADH detection methods using conventional electrodes are challenging due to slow electron transfer and fouling effect. Interestingly, paper-based flexible and disposable electrodes (PE) are superior for sensing biomolecules through simple detection procedures with excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, to construct a conducting polypeptide-modified paper electrode, initially, polytyrosine (PTyr) is synthesized from l-tyrosine N-carboxy anhydride through ring-opening polymerization, and PTyr is drop-coated on the PE. The PTyr-modified paper electrode (PMPE) demonstrated excellent electrochemical properties and facilitated the electrooxidation of NADH at a lower potential of 576 mV. The PMPE displayed a linear detection between 25 and 145 μM of NADH concentration, with a lower detection limit of 0.340 μM. Under ideal circumstances, the sensor developed displayed an excellent NADH detection capability without interference with the most common electroactive species, ascorbic acid. The PMPE facilitates good electrocatalytic activity toward NADH, which can also be employed as a substrate material for biofuel cells.

Abstract
Combining the excellent biocompatibility and mechanical flexibility of cellulose with the outstanding electrical, mechanical, optical and stability properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), cellulose-CNT composites have been extensively studied and applied to many flexible functional materials. In this review, we present advances in structural design strategies and various applications of cellulose-CNT composites. Firstly, the structural characteristics and corresponding treatments of cellulose and CNTs are analyzed, as are the potential interactions between the two to facilitate the formation of cellulose-CNT composites. Then, the design strategies and processing techniques of cellulose-CNT composites are discussed from the perspectives of cellulose fibers at the macroscopic scale (natural cotton, hemp, and other fibers; recycled cellulose fibers); nanocellulose at the micron scale (nanofibers, nanocrystals, etc.); and macromolecular chains at the molecular scale (cellulose solutions). Further, the applications of cellulose-CNT composites in various fields, such as flexible energy harvesting and storage devices, strain and humidity sensors, electrothermal devices, magnetic shielding, and photothermal conversion, are introduced. This review will help readers understand the design strategies of cellulose-CNT composites and develop potential high-performance applications.

Abstract
The utilization of electrochemical detection techniques in paper-based analytical devices (PADs) has revolutionized point-of-care (POC) testing, enabling the precise and discerning measurement of a diverse array of (bio)chemical analytes. The application of electrochemical sensing and paper as a suitable substrate for point-of-care testing platforms has led to the emergence of electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs). The inherent advantages of these modified paper-based analytical devices have gained significant recognition in the POC field. In response, electrochemical biosensors assembled from paper-based materials have shown great promise for enhancing sensitivity and improving their range of use. In addition, paper-based platforms have numerous advantageous characteristics, including the self-sufficient conveyance of liquids, reduced resistance, minimal fabrication cost, and environmental friendliness. This study seeks to provide a concise summary of the present state and uses of ePADs with insightful commentary on their practicality in the field. Future developments in ePADs biosensors include developing novel paper-based systems, improving system performance with a novel biocatalyst, and combining the biosensor system with other cutting-edge tools such as machine learning and 3D printing.

Abstract
Wearable sensors such as those made with paper are needed for non-destructive routine analysis of pesticides on plants, fruits, and vegetables. Herein we report on electrochemical sensors made with screen-printed carbon electrodes on kraft and parchment papers to detect the fungicide carbendazim. A systematic optimization was performed to find that electrochemical sensors on kraft paper treated in an acidic medium led to the highest performance, with a detection limit of 0.06 µM for carbendazim. The enhanced sensitivity for this sensor was attributed to the porous nature of kraft paper, which allowed for a large electrode surface area, and to the carboxylic groups formed during electrochemical activation. As a proof-of-concept, the electrochemical sensor attached to the skin of apple and cabbage was used to detect carbendazim with the same performance as the gold standard method, thus demonstrating that the sensor can be used in the farm and on supermarket shelves.

Abstract
In this work, a flexible amphiprotic amino-bonded carbon nanotube-Ag nanoparticle/polystyrene (CNT-NH2-Ag/PS) paper electrode was fabricated to measure glucose in human body fluids by a combination of vacuum filtration and high temperature baking. The front side of the fabricated paper electrode was hydrophobic and conductive, whereas its back side was hydrophilic and nonconductive. In the fabrication process, the coating sequence of CNT-NH2, Ag and PS was critical to determine the performance of the resulting CNT-NH2-Ag/PS electrode besides other parameters (e.g., amount of soluble starch, PS and Ag nanoparticles, type and amount of CNT-NH2, and electrode sensing area). Based on a series of experimental observations, the possible mechanism of glucose detection on the paper electrode was proposed, in which glucose was more favorable to migrate to the hydrophilic back side of the paper and interact with the active species (e.g., O2-) on the electrode surface. The electrochemical results showed that the CNT-NH2-Ag/PS paper electrode maintained stable electrochemical properties even after five cycles of use and 60 days of storage in air. The amphiprotic paper electrode demonstrated excellent sensing performance for glucose with a linear range of 1 μM to 1000 μM, a low detection limit of 0.2 μM, and a sensitivity of 31 333.0 μA mM-1 cm-2. The fabricated paper electrode was also successfully applied to detect different levels of glucose in complex human body fluids such as saliva, urine, and serum. These features make this type of paper electrode promising for glucose measurement.

Abstract
The flexible and shockproof rubber-based Al/OD-Gel/Cu electrochemical cell was designed, fabricated, and investigated for the detection of IR and UV irradiations. For this purpose, the transparent gel–orange dye composite was deposited on the porous rubber substrate between aluminum and copper electrodes. It was observed that the gel–orange dye composite was mechanically like a gel: soft and flexible. Electrically, this composite (gel–orange dye) forms a flexible electrolyte. It was found that the impedance of the samples under the effect of infrared irradiation decreased by 2.02 to 2.19 times on changing frequency from 100 Hz to 200 kHz. Accordingly, under the effect of ultraviolet irradiation, the impedance of the samples decreased by 1.23 to 1.45 times on increasing frequency from 100 Hz to 200 kHz. Under the effect of infrared irradiation up to 4000 W/m2, the cell’s open-circuit voltage increased by 1.59 times. The cell’s open-circuit voltage also increased by 1.06 times under the effect of ultraviolet irradiation up to 200 uW/cm2. The mechanism of the absorption of the infrared and ultraviolet irradiations by the OD–Gel composite has been discussed in detail. The fabricated flexible rubber substrate-based Al/OD-Gel/Cu electrochemical cells can be used as a prototype for the development of gel electronics-based devices.

Abstract
Here we present the fabrication of graphene and jelly (superabsorbent polymer) electrolyte composite-based shockproof flexible electrochemical sensors (Al/Gr-Jelly/Cu) and their properties under the effect of humidity and temperature. A layer of graphene mixed in jelly electrolyte was drop-casted onto porous rubber substrates between preliminary fixed aluminum (Al) and copper (Cu) electrodes followed by rubbing-in. It was observed that the graphene and jelly mixture was mechanically soft and flexible, similar to jelly. Electrically, this mixture (graphene and jelly) behaved as a flexible electrolyte. It was observed that under the effect of humidity ranging from 47 to 98%, the impedances of the sensors decreased by 2.0 times on average. Under the effect of temperatures ranging from 21 to 41 °C the impedances decreased by 2.4 times. The average temperature coefficient of impedances was equal to −0.03 °C−1. The electrochemical voltage generated by the flexible jelly electrolyte sensors was also investigated. It was found that the initial open-circuit voltages were equal to 201 mV and increased slightly, by 5–10% under the effect of humidity and temperature as well. The short-circuit currents under the effect of humidity and temperature increased by 2–3 times. The Al/Gr-Jelly/Cu electrochemical sensors may be used as prototypes for the development of the jelly electronic-based devices.

Abstract
Paper-based analytical devices (PADs), including lateral flow assays (LFAs), dipstick assays and microfluidic PADs (μPADs), have a great impact on the healthcare realm and environmental monitoring. This is especially evident in developing countries because PADs-based point-of-care testing (POCT) enables to rapidly determine various (bio)chemical analytes in a miniaturized, cost-effective and user-friendly manner. Low sensitivity and poor specificity are the main bottlenecks associated with PADs, which limit the entry of PADs into the real-life applications. The application of nanomaterials in PADs is showing great improvement in their detection performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and accuracy since the nanomaterials have unique physicochemical properties. In this review, the research progress on the nanomaterial-based PADs is summarized by highlighting representative recent publications. We mainly focus on the detection principles, the sensing mechanisms of how they work and applications in disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food safety management. In addition, the limitations and challenges associated with the development of nanomaterial-based PADs are discussed, and further directions in this research field are proposed.

Abstract
The excessive use of imidacloprid in agricultural production leads to a large number of residues that seriously threaten human health. Therefore, the detection of imidacloprid has become very important. But how to quantitatively detect imidacloprid at ultra-low levels is the main challenges. In this work, trimetallic metal-organic frameworks Fe, Co, Ni-MOF (FCN-MOF) isin situprepared on nickel foam (NF) and then used to make an electrochemical sensor in the detection of imidacloprid. FCN-MOF exhibits the characteristics of ultra-micro concentration detection for imidacloprid with high specific surface area and rich active metal centers. The high conductivity and 3D skeleton structure of the NF electrode enhance the contact site with imidacloprid and promote the transmission of electrons efficiently. All results show that the prepared electrochemical sensor has the advantages of ultra-low detection limits (0.1 pM), wide linear detection ranges (1-5 × 107pM) and good sensitivity (132.91μA pM‒1cm‒2), as well as good reproducibility, excellent anti-interference ability, and fantastic stability. Meanwhile, the electrochemical sensor is used to determine imidacloprid in lettuce, tomato, and cucumber samples with excellent recovery (90%-102.7%). The novel electrochemical sensor is successfully applied to the ultra-micro detection of imidacloprid in vegetables, which provides a new way for the efficient monitoring of imidacloprid in agriculture.

Abstract
Solar-driven interface evaporation for clean water production has attracted significant concern due to its energy-saving and environmental protection. However, it is still challenging for the evaporator to continuously and efficiently produce clean water in practical applications because of salt particle deposits and insufficient water supply. Here, an improved and easy-to-manufacture solar evaporator device (Co-NCNT-GO system) enhances water supply and light absorption by introducing a water supply layer (melamine sponge) and bamboo-like structure carbon nanotubes embedded with metal cobalt particles (Co-NCNT). The salt accumulation on the edge of the Co-NCNT-GO film is achieved by controlling the concentration gradient of brine in the center area and the edge area of the film. This paper aims to study the photothermal mechanism of the Co-NCNT-GO system through a series of characterization and theoretical calculations (DFT) and discuss the influence of different water supply areas on the salt recovery capacity. The results show that Co-NCNT-GO significantly reduces the band (0.054 au) between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUNO) by graphite nitrogen-doped CNTs, which is beneficial to improve the light-to-heat conversion capability. Furthermore, the Co-NCNT-GO film has good water wettability due to the higher adsorption energy of pyridine nitrogen and water molecules in Co-NCNT (-9.33 kcal/mol). Simultaneously, it is found that the water evaporation capacity and water supply capacity significantly affect whether the salt can be continuously crystallized at the edge of the film. When the ratio of water supply area to light and heat area is 4:2.5, the salt recovery rate is 46.54 g m-2 h-1 during 108 h continuous desalination under one sun illumination. This rationally designed structure and adjustable water transport channel can simultaneously meet high-efficiency evaporation and salt recovery, which can have great potential in practical applications.

Abstract
Electrochemical sensors have emerged as important diagnostic tools in recent years, due to their simplicity and ease of use. Compared to instrumental analysis methods that use complicated experimental and data analysis techniques─such as mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), spectrophotometric methods, and chromatography─electrochemical sensors show promise for use in a wide range of real-time and in situ applications such as pharmaceutical testing, environmental monitoring, and medical diagnostics. In order to identify analytes in complex and/or biological samples, materials used for both the electrode materials and the chemically selective layer have been evolving throughout the years for optimizing the analytical performance of electrochemical sensors to increase sensitivity, selectivity and linear range. In this Perspective, attention will be focused on different types of materials that have been used for electrochemical sensing, including new combinations of well-studied materials as well as novel strategies to enhance the performance of sensing devices. The Perspective will also discuss existing challenges in the field and future strategies for addressing those challenges.

Abstract
Porous materials are ubiquitous and essential for many processes in nature as well as in industry, and the need to produce them from renewable materials will definitely increase. A prominent example for such a fully recyclable and biogenic porous material is paper, a material that contains macropores formed in between the fibers as well as a large distribution of much finer pores on and within the fiber walls. While the determination of pore sizes is of central importance for the characterization of such materials, their determination is usually only possible with complex methodologies. The determination of pore sizes in the context of water has remained largely unsolved to date, in particular, if water-swellable materials are considered. Here, we introduce a completely new way of determining pore sizes of materials even under swelling conditions. Using a centrifugal device and studying the imbibition of water into paper at various centrifugal forces that oppose the capillary forces, we can access the mean pore size of different paper materials in an experimentally simple fashion. In addition, we can show that the pore size values obtained with our "centrifugal porosimetry" are consistent with the values obtained using other methods, usually much more involved methods. For this purpose, we measure well-characterized translucent macroporous materials using water, ranging from simple glass capillaries to standard filters and nitrocellulose membranes.

Abstract
The unique structural and electrochemical properties of graphene oxide (GO) make it an ideal material for the fabrication of biosensing devices. Therefore, in the present study, graphene oxide nanoparticles modified paper electrodes were used as a low-cost matrix for the development of an amperometric DNA sensor. The graphene oxide was synthesized using the modified hummers method and drop cast on a screen-printed paper electrode (SPPE) to enhance its electrochemical properties. Further, the GO/SPPE electrode was modified with a 5′NH2 labeled ssDNA probe specific to the htrA gene of Orientia tsutsugamushi using carbodiimide cross-linking chemistry. The synthesized GO was characterized using UV-Vis, FTIR, and XRD. The layer-by-layer modification of the paper electrode was monitored via FE-SEM, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The sensor response after hybridization with single-stranded genomic DNA (ssGDNA) of O. tsutsugamushi was recorded using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Methylene blue (1 mM in PBS buffer, pH 7.2) was used as a hybridization indicator and [Fe(CN)6]−3/−4 (2.5 mM in PBS buffer, pH 7.2) as a redox probe during electrochemical measurements. The developed DNA sensor shows excellent sensitivity (1228.4 µA/cm2/ng) and LOD (20 pg/µL) for detection of O. tsutsugamushi GDNA using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV).
