Diacetylene-Functionalized Dendrons: Self-Assembled and Photopolymerized Three-Dimensional Networks for Advanced Self-Healing and Wringing Soft Materials

Control Over Topochemical Photopolymerization and Photoisomerization in Azobenzene Tethered Chiral Diacetylenes Toward Tunable Molecular Packing and Conductivity

Polydiacetylenes (PDAs) play a pivotal role in sensing and recognition owing to their stimuli-responsive optoelectronic properties. Inducing chirality in polydiacetylenes provides an additional handle for generating tunable chiroptical behavior in materials toward chiral optoelectronics and photonics. A photopolymerizable diacetylene (DA) tethered with chiral (R/S) phenylalanine and an azobenzene photoswitch  (1R/S -DA) is designed, with a suitable control molecule 2DA devoid of the chiral motif. The designed molecules self-assemble in aqueous and organic solvent systems. The chiral PDAs show better packing efficiency in monolayers and record higher photoisomerization percentages as compared to the achiral analog. Further, higher photoisomerization percentages are observed in the organic solvent system. In both chiral (1S- PDA) and achiral (2PDA) polymers, E-Z photoisomerization leads to the weakening of the self-assembly. Microscopic and X-ray scattering investigation suggest excellent birefringence in E-1°S- PDA owing to better molecular ordering in comparison to Z-1°S- PDA and E-1a S- PDA. Better molecular ordering of the conjugated polymer in organic solvent (E-1°S- PDA) renders a higher charge storage propensity as compared to the aqueous solvent. Finally, photo-controlled E-Z isomerization in the azobenzene motifs embedded within polymer domains exhibits modulation in conductivity with E-1°S- PDA having ≈3-fold superior conductivity than Z-1°S- PDA in solution-processed thin films.

Geometric Transformations Afforded by Rotational Freedom in Aramid Amphiphile Nanostructures

Molecular self-assembly in water leads to nanostructure geometries that can be tuned owing to the highly dynamic nature of amphiphiles. There is growing interest in strongly interacting amphiphiles with suppressed dynamics, as they exhibit ultrastability in extreme environments. However, such amphiphiles tend to assume a limited range of geometries upon self-assembly due to the specific spatial packing induced by their strong intermolecular interactions. To overcome this limitation while maintaining structural robustness, we incorporate rotational freedom into the aramid amphiphile molecular design by introducing a diacetylene moiety between two aramid units, resulting in diacetylene aramid amphiphiles (D-AAs). This design strategy enables rotations along the carbon-carbon sp hybridized bonds of an otherwise fixed aramid domain. We show that varying concentrations and equilibration temperatures of D-AA in water lead to self-assembly into four different nanoribbon geometries: short, extended, helical, and twisted nanoribbons, all while maintaining robust structure with thermodynamic stability. We use advanced microscopy, X-ray scattering, spectroscopic techniques, and two-dimensional (2D) NMR to understand the relationship between conformational freedom within strongly interacting amphiphiles and their self-assembly pathways.

Design and Synthesis of α-Anomeric Diacetylene-Containing Glycosides as Photopolymerizable Molecular Gelators

Glycolipids with diacetylene functional groups are fascinating compounds with many practical uses. Among these, diacetylene-containing gelators are especially important because they can form photopolymerizable gels, which are useful stimuli-responsive materials. Inspired by the unique properties of diacetylene-containing gelators and to understand the structural influences especially the location of the diacetylene functional groups on the self-assembling properties, a series of 15 novel N-acetyl-d-glucosamine derivatives with the diacetylene functional group introduced at the anomeric position were designed and synthesized. The diacetylene function is attached to the sugar through α-glycosylation with the distance from the anomeric oxygen being varied from one, two, and three methylene groups, and the other side contains hydroxyl, carboxyl, phenyl, and alkyl substituents. Remarkably, all compounds can form self-assembled gels in one or more selected solvents. A majority of these synthesized diacetylene glycosides are effective gelators for ethanol/water (v/v 1:1), dimethyl sulfoxide/water (v/v 1:1), and toluene, and one compound also formed a hydrogel at 1.0 wt %. Typically, these glycosides form gels that are photopolymerizable to afford red-colored gels. Scanning electronic microscopy indicated that the gelators formed helices, fibers, and planar sheet-like morphologies. The chemical structures of the derivatives affected their gelation properties and responses to UV treatment. The carboxylic acid-functionalized derivative 17 was able to immobilize basic solutions and form transparent gels. We expect that these diacetylene glycosides especially the hydroxyl and carboxylic acid derivatives will be useful as stimuli-responsive glycolipids for biomedical research.

Rational Design of Diphenyldiacetylene-Based Fluorescent Materials Enabling a 365-nm Light-Initiated Topochemical Polymerization

Photopolymerization of diacetylenes usually requires stringent reaction conditions like high energy irradiation of 254-nm light or even γ-rays, which are generally harmful to the human body and thus mild conditions with lower energy irradiation are required. In this study, different diphenyldiacetylene (DPDA) derivatives were rationally designed followed by the investigation of their photopolymerization behavior. It was found that the para-substituted amino groups could render the absorption band of DPDA bathochromically shifted, ensuring a 365-nm light wavelength coverage. On this basis, an organogel system was constructed by chemically modifying cholesteryl and lipoic acid onto the DPDA moiety in aromatic solvents. Such uniform self-assemblies further facilitated to a rather high degree of polymerization by 365-nm irradiation. As a kind of fluorescent materials, the whole polymerization process of this system can be visualized by a photoluminescent signal.

Stimuli responsive dynamic transformations in supramolecular gels

Supramolecular gels are formed by the self-assembly of small molecules under the influence of various non-covalent interactions. As the interactions are individually weak and reversible, it is possible to perturb the gels easily, which in turn enables fine tuning of their properties. Synthetic supramolecular gels are kinetically trapped and usually do not show time variable changes in material properties after formation. However, such materials potentially become switchable when exposed to external stimuli like temperature, pH, light, enzyme, redox, and chemical analytes resulting in reconfiguration of gel matrix into a different type of network. Such transformations allow gel-to-gel transitions while the changes in the molecular aggregation result in alteration of physical and chemical properties of the gel with time. Here, we discuss various methods that have been used to achieve gel-to-gel transitions by modifying a pre-formed gel material through external perturbation. We also describe methods that allow time-dependent autonomous switching of gels into different networks enabling synthesis of next generation functional materials. Dynamic modification of gels allows construction of an array of supramolecular gels with various properties from a single material which eventually extend the limit of applications of the gels. In some cases, gel-to-gel transitions lead to materials that cannot be accessed directly. Finally, we point out the necessity and possibility of further exploration of the field.

Morphological Transitions of a Photoswitchable Aramid Amphiphile Nanostructure

Self-assembly of small amphiphilic molecules in water can lead to nanostructures of varying geometries with pristine internal molecular organization. Here we introduce a photoswitchable aramid amphiphile (AA), designed to exhibit extensive hydrogen bonding and robust mechanical properties upon self-assembly, while containing a vinylnitrile group for photoinduced cis-trans isomerization. We demonstrate spontaneous self-assembly of the vinylnitrile-containing AA in water to form nanoribbons. Upon UV irradiation, trans-to-cis isomerizations occur concomitantly with a morphological transition from nanoribbons to nanotubes. The nanotube structure persists in water for over six months, stabilized by strong and collective intermolecular interactions. We demonstrate that the nanoribbon-to-nanotube transition is reversible upon heating and that switching between states can be achieved repeatedly. Finally, we use electron microscopy to capture the transition and propose mechanisms for nanoribbon-to-nanotube rearrangement and vice versa. The stability and switchability of photoresponsive AA nanostructures make them viable for a range of future applications.
