Abstract
The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment significantly threatens human health and aquatic ecosystems. Conventional wastewater treatment processes often fall short of effectively removing these emerging contaminants. Therefore, the development of high-performance adsorbents is crucial for environmental remediation. This research utilizes molecular simulation to explore the potential of novel modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in pharmaceutical pollutant removal, paving the way for the design of efficient wastewater treatment strategies. Utilizing UIO-66, a robust MOF, as the base material, we developed UIO-66 functionalized with chitosan (CHI) and oxidized chitosan (OCHI). These modified MOFs' physical and chemical properties were first investigated through various characterization techniques. Subsequently, molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) were employed to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms of rosuvastatin (ROSU) and simvastatin (SIMV), two prevalent pharmaceutical pollutants, onto these nanostructures. MCS calculations demonstrated a significant enhancement in the adsorption energy by incorporating CHI and OCHI into UIO-66. This increased ROSU from -14,522 to -16,459 kcal/mol and SIMV from -17,652 to -21,207 kcal/mol. Moreover, MDS reveals ROSU rejection rates in neat UIO-66 to be at 40%, rising to 60 and 70% with CHI and OCHI. Accumulation rates increase from 4 Å in UIO-66 to 6 and 9 Å in UIO-CHI and UIO-OCHI. Concentration analysis shows SIMV rejection surges from 50 to 90%, with accumulation rates increasing from 6 to 11 Å with CHI and OCHI in UIO-66. Functionalizing UIO-66 with CHI and OCHI significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity and selectivity for ROSU and SIMV. Abundant hydroxyl and amino groups facilitated strong interactions, improving performance over that of unmodified UIO-66. Surface functionalization plays a vital role in customizing the MOFs for pharmaceutical pollutant removal. These insights guide next-gen adsorbent development, offering high efficiency and selectivity for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In recent years, the issue of pharmaceutical contaminants in water bodies has emerged as a significant environmental concern owing to the potential negative impacts on both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Consequently, the development of efficient and eco-friendly methods for their determination and removal is of paramount importance. In this context, the development of a surfactant ensemble sensor has been explored for hard-to-sense amphiphilic drug, i.e., amitriptyline. Herein, a pyrene-based amphiphile chemoreceptor was synthesized and characterized through various spectroscopic techniques such as 1H, 13C NMR, single-crystal XRD, FTIR, and ES-mass spectrometry. Then, dodecanoic acid (DA) and a pyrene-based receptor in a THF/water solvent system were used to generate reverse micelle-based self-aggregates of SUPRAS (SUPRAmolecular Solvent). The structural aspects, such as morphology and size, along with the stability of the SUPRAS aggregates were unfolded through spectroscopic and microscopic insights. The present investigation describes a synergistic approach that combines the unique properties of premicellar concentration of supramolecular solvent with the promising potential of pyrene-based receptor for enhanced amitriptyline extraction with simultaneous determination from water (LOD = 12 nM). To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed aggregates in real-world scenarios, experiments were conducted to determine the sensing efficiency among various pharmaceutical pollutants commonly found in water sources. The results reveal that the synergistic nanoensemble exhibits remarkable sensing ability, toward the amitriptyline (AMT) drug outperforming conventional methods.

Removal of propranolol by membranes fabricated with nanocellulose/proanthocyanidin/modified tannic acid: The influence of chemical and morphologic features and mechanism study. Int J Biol Macromol 2024; 256:128268. Abstract
Polymer-based membranes containing nanocellulose and natural macromolecules have potential to treat water, however few works have associated the changes in chemical and morphological membrane's features with their performance as adsorbent. Herein, a new green composite based on nanocellulose (NC) and alkylated tannic acid (ATA) and cross-linked with proanthocyanidin was produced and incorporated into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes to eliminate propranolol (PRO) from water. Characterizations revealed that the increasing of NC-ATA content reduced the pore size of the membrane's upper surface and made the finger like structure of the sublayer disappear, due to the formation of hydrophilic domains of NC/ATA which speeds up the external solidification step. The presence of NC-ATA reduced the hydrophilicity, from a water contact angle of 3.65° to 16.51°, the membrane roughness, from 223.5 to 52.0 nm, and the zeta potential from -25.35 to -55.20 mV, improving its features to be a suitable adsorbent of organic molecules. The membranes proved to be excellent green adsorbent, tridimensional, and easy to remove after use, and qmax for PRO was 303 mg·g-1. The adsorption mechanism indicates that H-bonds, ion exchange, and π-π play important role in adsorption. NC-ATA@PAN kept high removal efficiencies after four cycles, evidencing the potential for water purification.

Abstract
Trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) present major removal challenges for wastewater treatment. TrOCs, such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are associated with chronic toxicity at ng L-1 exposure levels and should be removed from wastewater to enable safe reuse and release of treated effluents. Established adsorbents, such as granular activated carbon (GAC), exhibit variable TrOC removal and fouling by wastewater constituents. These shortcomings motivate the development of selective novel adsorbents that also maintain robust performance in wastewater. Cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymers are promising adsorbents with demonstrated TrOC removal efficacy. Here, we report a simplified and potentially scalable synthesis of a porous polymer composed of styrene-linked β-CD and cationic ammonium groups. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrate that the polymer is a selective adsorbent exhibiting complete removal for six out of 13 contaminants with less adsorption inhibition than GAC in wastewater. The polymer also exhibits faster adsorption kinetics than GAC and ion exchange (IX) resin, higher adsorption affinity for PFAS than GAC, and is regenerable by solvent wash. Rapid small-scale column tests show that the polymer exhibits later breakthrough times compared to GAC and IX resin. These results demonstrate the potential for β-CD polymers to remediate TrOCs from complex water matrices.

Abstract
The alteration of agricultural wastes into novel adsorbents can stimulate their scalability in realistic application, showing great economic and environmental advantages. Here, we proposed a strategy to engineer rice husk (RH) with microporous melamine-formaldehyde networks (MFNs) resins and the utilization for dynamic removal of organic micropollutants rapidly and efficiently. was pre-treated to acquire attractive surface and unique hierarchical porosity, endowing with surface functionalization and essential filtering properties. MFNs can be uniformly generated in-situ on the fully exposed cellulose backbones of the pre-treated RH. MFNs granules functionalized RH (RH@MFNs) exhibited high removal efficiencies over 90% within 30 min for the adsorption of hazardous organic compounds (e.g., phenolic and antibiotic micropollutants) in static tests. Experiment results and density functional theory (DFT) simulation revealed that the synergy of hydrogen bonding, π-πinteraction, and micropore preservation dominates the adsorption. Further dynamic adsorption experiments showed that the removal efficiency and equilibrium removal capacity towards bisphenol A by RH@MFNs packed bed up-flow column were 2.6 and 67 times higher than that of raw RH, respectively. The column adsorption fits well with the Thomas model and bed depth service time (BDST) kinetic model. The inherent macropores inside RH and the roughness caused by the spiky structures and mesopores outside RH, as well as the accumulated MFNs granules, can lead to local turbulence of water flow around RH@MFNs, enabling fast and efficient adsorption. This sustainable and cost-effective preparation of RH-based adsorbents sheds light on the rational design of biomass waste adsorbents for realistic wastewater.

Abstract
A carbon material with both open macrochannel arrays and abundant micro/mesopores was prepared, characterized, and applied for removing chloramphenicol (CAP) from water. In the preparation process, Carex meyeriana Kunth (CM) with natural channel arrays was used as the precursor for producing the biochar, and NaOH was used for removing silicon and formatting micro- and mesopores of the porous carbon. The product (PCCM) exhibited the highest specific surface area (2700.24 m2 g-1) among the reported CM-derived porous carbons. The adsorption performances of PCCM were evaluated through batch adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity of PCCM toward CAP was 1659.43 mg g-1. The adsorption mechanism was investigated with the aid of theoretical calculations. Moreover, PCCM exhibited better performance than other porous carbon adsorbents in fixed-bed experiments, which may be due to its structural advantages.

Abstract
C-dots are a new class of materials with vast applications. The synthesis of bio-based C-dots has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Polysaccharides being the most abundant natural materials with high biodegradability and no toxicity have been the focus of researchers for the synthesis of C-dots. C-dots obtained from polysaccharides are generally fabricated via thermal procedures, carbonization, and microwave pyrolysis. Small size, photo-induced electron transfer (PET), and highly adjustable luminosity behavior are the most important physical and chemical properties of C-dots. However, C-dot/polysaccharide composites can be introduced as a new generation of composites that combine the features of both C-dots and polysaccharides having a wide range of applications in biomedicines, biosensors, drug delivery systems, etc. This review demonstrates the features, raw materials, and methods used for the fabrication of C-dots derived from different polysaccharides. Furthermore, the properties, applications, and synthesis conditions of various C-dot/polysaccharide composites are discussed in detail.

Abstract
The industrial and agricultural revolution has posed a serious and potential threat to environment. The industrial and agricultural pollutants are directly released into the environment. This issue has clinched the scientists to work on different materials in order to decontaminate the environment. Among all other techniques, the membrane filtration technology has fascinated researchers to overcome the pollution by its promising features. This review elaborated various membrane synthesis approaches along with their mechanism of filtration, their applications towards environmental remediation such as removal of heavy metals, degradation of dyes, pharma waste, organic pollutants, as well as gas sensing applications. The membrane synthesis using different sort of materials in which inorganic, carbon materials, polymers and metal organic framework (MOFs) are highlighted. These materials have been involved in synthesis of membrane to make it more cost effective and productive to remove such hazardous materials from wastewater. Based on the reported literature, it has been found that inorganic and polymer membranes are facing issues of brittleness and swelling prior to the industrial scale applications related to the high temperature and pressure which needs to be addressed to enhance the permeation performance.

Abstract
Herein, we present an electrocatalyst constructed by zinc oxide hexagonal prisms/phosphorus-doped carbon nitride wrinkles (ZnO HPs/P-CN) prepared via a facile sonochemical method towards the detection of nitrofurantoin (NF). The ZnO HPs/P-CN-sensing platform showed amplified response and low-peak potential compared with other electrodes. The exceptional electrochemical performance could be credited to ideal architecture, rapid electron/charge transfer, good conductivity, and abundant active sites in the ZnO HPs/P-CN composite. Resulting from these merits, the ZnO HPs/P-CN-modified electrode delivered rapid response (2 s), a low detection limit (2 nM), good linear range (0.01-111 µM), high sensitivity (4.62 µA µM-1 cm2), better selectivity, decent stability (±97.6%), and reproducibility towards electrochemical detection of NF. We further demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed ZnO HPs/P-CN sensor for detecting NF in samples of water and human urine. All the above features make our proposed ZnO HPs/P-CN sensor a most promising probe for detecting NF in natural samples.

Abstract
Water pollution is a major concern for public health and a sustainable future. It is urgent to purify wastewater with effective methods to ensure a clean water supply. Most wastewater remediation techniques rely heavily on functional materials, and cost-effective materials are thus highly favorable. Of great environmental and economic significance, developing waste-derived materials for wastewater remediation has undergone explosive growth recently. Herein, the applications of waste (e.g., biowastes, electronic wastes, and industrial wastes)-derived materials for wastewater purification are comprehensively reviewed. Sophisticated strategies for turning wastes into functional materials are firstly summarized, including pyrolysis and combustion, hydrothermal synthesis, sol-gel method, co-precipitation, and ball milling. Moreover, critical experimental parameters within different design strategies are discussed. Afterward, recent applications of waste-derived functional materials in adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, electrochemical treatment, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are analyzed. We mainly focus on the development of efficient functional materials via regulating the internal and external characteristics of waste-derived materials, and the material's property-performance correlation is also emphasized. Finally, the key future perspectives in the field of waste-derived materials-driven water remediation are highlighted.

Abstract
Among various classes of antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, especially Levofloxacin, are being administered on a large scale for numerous purposes. Being highly stable to be completely metabolized, residual quantities of Levofloxacin get accumulated into the food chain proving a great global threat for aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems. Various removal techniques including both conventional and advanced methods have been reported for this purpose. This review is a novel attempt to make a critical analysis of the recent advances made exclusively toward the sequestration of Levofloxacin from wastewater through an extensive literature survey (2015-2021). Adsorption and advanced oxidation processes especially photocatalytic degradation are the most tested techniques in which assorted nanomaterials play a significant role. Several photocatalysts exhibited up to 100% degradation of LEV which makes photocatalytic degradation the best method among other tested methods. However, the degraded products need to be further monitored in terms of their toxicity. Biological degradation may prove to be the most environment-friendly with the least toxicity, unfortunately, not much research is reported in the field. With these key findings and knowledge gaps, authors suggest the scope of hybrid techniques, which have been experimented on other antibiotics. These can potentially minimize the disadvantages of the individual techniques concurrently improving the efficiency of LEV removal. Besides, techniques like column adsorption, membrane treatment, and ozonation, being least reported, reserve good perspectives for future research. With these implications, the review will certainly serve as a breakthrough for researchers working in this field to aid their future findings.

Abstract
Most of the organic compounds contaminating the environment can form inclusion complexes with cyclodextrins resulting in enhanced solubility (a benefit in soil remediation) or just the opposite: reduced mobility by sorption (a benefit in wastewater treatment). Combining biotechnologies with cyclodextrin, a renewable and biodegradable material, green environmental technologies of high efficiency were developed. For instance, the cyclodextrin-enabled soil washing/flushing technologies combined with bioremediation have been demonstrated in full-scale field experiments. The efficiency of tertiary wastewater treatment by sorption of non-biodegradable xenobiotics, such as residual pharmaceutics, was proved. The biofilm formation in fouling processes can be prevented or reduced either by applying cyclodextrin-based coatings or by manipulation of quorum sensing (bacterial communication) via capturing signal molecules.

Abstract
In this work, the combination of high surface area diatomite with Fe and Cu bimetallic MOF material catalysts (Fe0.25Cu0.75(BDC)@DE) were synthesized by traditional solvothermal method, and exhibited efficient degradation performance to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The degradation results showed: Within 120 min, about 93% of TC was degraded under the optimal conditions. From the physical–chemical characterization, it can be seen that Fe and Cu play crucial roles in the reduction of Fe3+ because of their synergistic effect. The synergistic effect can not only increase the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), but also improve the degradation efficiency of TC. The Lewis acid property of Cu achieved the pH range of reaction system has been expanded, and it made the material degrade well under both neutral and acidic conditions. Loading into diatomite can reduce agglomeration and metal ion leaching, thus the novel catalysts exhibited low metal ion leaching. This catalyst has good structural stability, and less loss of performance after five reaction cycles, and the degradation efficiency of the material still reached 81.8%. High performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to analyze the degradation intermediates of TC, it provided a deep insight of the mechanism and degradation pathway of TC by bimetallic MOFs. This allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the catalytic mechanism and degradation pathway of TC degradation by bimetallic MOFS catalysts. This work has not only achieved important progress in developing high-performance catalysts for TC degradation, but has also provided useful information for the development of MOF-based catalysts for rapid environmental remediation.

Abstract
99Tc is a radioactive fission product, mainly in the form of TcO4 -, with good solubility and mobility in the environment. The development of effective and inexpensive materials to remove TcO4 - from nuclear industry wastewater or contaminated water is significant. Wood sawdust is a byproduct of the wood processing industry and is an abundant, low-cost, and sustainable material. The mesostructure of wood consists of numerous hollow cells that are joined endwise to form an interconnected channel matrix capable of rapid transfer of ions. Imidazolium-functionalized wood sawdust (IM-WS) was synthesized using natural wood sawdust by a two-step reaction. It has excellent properties of TcO4 -/ReO4 - adsorption including rapid adsorption dynamics (30 s to equilibrium), good adsorption stability (pH 3-9), high selectivity (adsorption of 45.4 Re % in 1000 times excess of NO3 - ions, 76.6 Re % in 6000 times excess of SO4 2- ions, and 92.2 Tc % in a simulated mixed solution; after adsorption, the concentration of TcO4 - decreased to 0.056 ppb from the initial concentration of 12.09 ppb in 1000 times excess of SO4 2-), and in particular low production costs. Coal gangue (CG) is one of the largest industrial solid wastes in the world produced during the process of coal mining. The accumulation of CG is easy to cause ion leakage, which is harmful to the environment and human body. The recovery and utilization of CG are imminent. In the process, a hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) adsorbent with excellent adsorption property for Cr(VI) and rhodamine B (RhB), was prepared from CG by a two-step method and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, TPD and BET. The results revealed that the specific surface area of HPC is up to 2012.7 m2 g-1, and its adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) and RhB are reached 320.51 and 3086.42 mg g-1. The adsorption mechanism of RhB was the synergetic effect of physics and chemistry. While XPS results suggested that hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) only have a chemisorption effect on Cr(VI). This study provided an idea for the preparation of HPCs from CG to remove inorganic and organic pollutants such as heavy metal Cr(VI) and RhB in water.

Abstract
The chemistry of the host-guest complex formation has received much attention as a highly efficient approach for use to develop economical adsorbents for water purification. In the present study, the synthesis of three β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes with the oil orange SS (OOSS) azo dye as a guest molecule and their potential applications in water purification are described. The complexes were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). FTIR and thermal analyses confirmed the encapsulation of OOSS dye within the hydrophobic cavity of β-CD. The encapsulation of hydrophobic dye inside the β-CD cavity was mainly due to the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. The results showed that the stability of the OOSS dye had been improved after the complexation. The effect of three different compositions of the host-guest complexes was analyzed. The present study demonstrated that the hydrophobic dye could be removed from aqueous solution via inclusion complex formation. Thus, it can play a significant role in removing the highly toxic OOSS dye from the industrial effluent.
